Yeah. There’s going to be practically endless demand for public transit during the games from all the tourists - this is basically the only acceptable time to do a fare hike. Natives won’t be significantly affected because it’s temporary, so they’ll only spend like twenty euro more over the whole games probably. More if they use more public transit obviously. But for the city this will double the earnings from the tourists on transit, which is money that can be funneled back into the massive Grand Paris Express plans to help speed up construction.
Paris expects 500,000 people daily to be attending the events. Assuming 2/3 take public transit (which I think is likely, because there’s no way Paris has 500,000 extra cars for rent sitting around), that’s 660,000 euro a day extra generated, for a total of 11.2 million, JUST from the games themselves. Tourists wishing to take the opportunity outside competition times to visit the rest of the city will generate even more trips. I think 15-20 million extra generated by doubling fares is a reasonable number, which isn’t much on the scale of Paris’ expansion plans’ cost, but is regardless still a quite large amount of money, especially compared to running public transit for FREE during the Olympics.
@@theevilmoppetgreat point. In addition, locals have the option to buy monthly pass to avoid the price hike. If they don’t use the public transit enough to buy a monthly pass, it means they don’t use transit much and thus only a small temporary hit for them
The Tokyo Olympics had it rough because of the absence of fans and the revenue that would have come with them. But all things considered, the Olympics went smoothly, with the facilities made for the games still in use.
the more I hear about the paris olympics, the more I'm interested in the event. It's been long known that the event is an unprofitable expensive mess, but seeing this one being used to work on the issues of the city is amazing. But it also makes me wonder why this couldn't be done any time in the last half a century...
Just making things clear : the homeless of Paris were merely deported, and left to struggle even more in provincial towns, due to the lack of support networks.
The Rio Olympics only happened in 2016, and unless you are writing from the future, the stadiums have not been abandoned for a decade, let alone "well over a decade"...
@@vinny7114 So, basically, there are very few abandoned structures in Rio, especially because it was an edition that involved many temporary structures. What gave the impression of abandonment was mainly the delay in dismantling and reconverting some structures. Everything in games today in poor condition includes: - BMX Center, Olympic Tennis Center, Rio Municipal Velodrome (Which is undergoing renovations). All other structures that remain are in use and very well maintained. The big problem with the Rio games is much more that they were a tool for a very violent process of real estate speculation. But this is also happening in Paris, as it happened in London, or in Barcelona back then.
This video is spot on: the genius of the French is their ability to deliver exceptional value for money. They’ve pulled off the least expensive Olympics in over 30 years with amazing results. The key? They didn’t build hundreds of structures specifically for the Games at outrageous costs. Instead, they focused on: 1. Leveraging existing infrastructure and transportation that already prove their daily practical use-upgrading and renovating sports venues, conference centers, trains, traffic systems, etc. 2. Integrating the Olympics into the heart of the city by temporarily transforming iconic Parisian landmarks into competition zones (like Beach Volleyball, the Grand Palais, etc) at a very low cost. 3. Assessing the sports market and building temporary structures for anything that wouldn’t find use or funding after the Games. 4. Undertaking projects like the Seine purification to create summer swimming zones for tourists. In short, the French made the Olympics cost-effective yet highly efficient. This might just be the future: hosting events in emblematic city landmarks, using temporary structures where there’s no post-Olympics demand, and renovating or repurposing existing facilities. With this approach, even countries with modest budgets could consider hosting the Olympics.
So far they're amazing. The venues are the most beautiful ever. Céline Dion on the Eiffel Tower was the most beautiful and emotional moment of the olympic opening ceremonies ever. Nothing made before can compare to that. The ceremony in general might not be the best ever but it was nice to see something new.
Swimming in the sewer doesn't seem like a good way to reinvent things 😂😂😂 Even Rio managed to clean its bay to the point that dolphins and whales have returned to it
Fun to come back afterwards. Fact is the Paris olympics were a smashing success and the risks taken payed off, especially the venues in the city. Most stunning venues in olympic history.
Thank god Paris is in a developed country, and wont face the same problems as those olympics in developing countries.... You know... Like London and Tokyo... famously underdeveloped
Where the hell did you find Tokyo generated nearly six billion in revenue? No way did they come close to that based off losing over $800 million in spectator ticket revenue due to the pandemic. Cite your sources bruh.
Y'all do realize that you the point was to show how much they generated income versus how much they spent. Viewing through that lense Tokyo did not make 6 billion after breaking even, they did not recuperate their spent money on the Olympics. Furthermore you dummy, there is a source list in the description, the source they cited was the 2nd one. Please do your due diligence before complaining in a fit of emotion. Thank you
Madrid already proposed to use existing stadiums and submitted a more climate-friendly bid when climate-friendly wasn't still a thing and cities were fighting to build the largest / newest / most expensive stadium. The bid was famously and controversially rejected.
Madrid did no such thing lol they just built stuff before being given the olympics beacause they love to spend money on construction, with scams like the ciudad de la justicia or the 7b metro which is making houses sink
The poor ratings of the Tokyo Olympics in the US was also due to the time difference which was not at all favorable as most of Japan daytime occurs during the American night: 4PM in Tokyo is 3 AM in NYC or 6 AM in LA.
The president of the organizing committee of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, accused of bribery, had his sentence annulled. Governor of the state of Rio (complaint appears, 0:19) has nothing to do with the mayor of the city of Rio. And it was Rio, the city that organized the Olympic games

I’ve been critical of previous summer Olympic cities because it was obvious they were using the event as an excuse to improve the cities infrastructure, which is the reason corruption happens and costs skyrocket. There should be a rotation of cities that can host the Olympics thus minimizing cost…Paris would be one of those cities for me. An Olympic event in Paris once every 20yrs as oppose to once every 100yrs. All that said, I’m definitely watching the games.

The French electricity grid is already 99% carbon free thanks to nuclear and hydro. Wind and solar are not a climate improvement in France. Actually solar CO2 emissions are 400% worse than nuclear according to UN IPPC figures. (48grams / kwh for solar and 12 grams for nuclear)

A billion and a half Euro spent on cleaning some rivers in a populated area, seems better than spending ten billion on single use facilities. (Of course, why can't governments do such improvements anyway.)
The situation in Brazil was entirely different from other cases. Brazil suffered a parliamentary coup. Paris reinvented The Games by having an opening ceremony with a budget of two bucks. The most embarrasing thing on tv I've ever seen. "reinventing" lol so far two athletes got sick after having to compete in the dirty waters of the seine (not to mention that training has been postponed more then once because of the conditions of the water), people have complained about not having enough/proper food in the olympic village, others were left behind for hours after training in the skateboarding facilities and some had to go back to their dorms by skate because the bus broke down, some of the tennis athletes had to use ice to cool down because of how hot the bus was and they weren't allowed to open the windows, just this week another athlete decided to sleep in some kind of square in the village because the room was too hot. a lot of athletes from a certain delegation decided to go to hotels because they had to share a single bathroom between 10 people. I love the olympics but its just shameful how we have to accept everything as perfect, smart and beautiful because it comes from an european country. you can cut down on costs, I agree with that, but not giving proper structure to people that have been training for this moment for years is just shameful. and I didn't even say a word about the messy opening ceremony, how people paid thousands to be able to see just a few minutes of boats going down the river, in the rain (not just the ones that wanted to watch it, but all the athletes, the press, everyone).
"minimising its environmental impact" one line later... "and hosting events as far as French Polynesia" So you're telling me NO ONE sees the very obvious contradiction here?
Transporting the athletes there shouldn't even need a full extra flight... So the environmental impact shouldn't be any larger, or barely, than if they didn't held the competition there. Flights to Tahiti and local hosting accommodations are extremely pricey, which de facto severely limits the number of Olympic visitors in Tahiti to barely more than usual. It's not like they'd transport millions to the other side of the Earth. I'm not even sure if there's 100 or 150 people including athletes and staff. They'll probably group everyone on the same flight combo. Anyway, Tahiti would not allow an invasion of tourists for Olympic surfing events, they are really restrictive in the number of flights and tourists they receive, keeping the destination as exclusive as possible, even during the Olympics.

I went to Rio this past Christmas, and thr olympic village is not abandoned. Its a public space where many people have businesses.
Everyone complains about the olympics not making money but then every means to profit from it is a greedy cash grab?
The duality of man. But yeah, that's politics, there's always someone to criticize actions, from one side or another.
Yeah, this is why I don’t like many of these type of arguments. Damn if you do damn if you don’t
Tokyo is a city of 35 million people, they can use them for literally anything they wanted with such a massive population to support it.

It's been long known that the event is an unprofitable expensive mess, but seeing this one being used to work on the issues of the city is amazing. But it also makes me wonder why this couldn't be done any time in the last half a century...

The Rio Olympics only happened in 2016, and unless you are writing from the future, the stadiums have not been abandoned for a decade, let alone "well over a decade"...
Minor error
These stadiums were built for the 2014 world cup
@@notliquid1448 True.
Funny how he didn't deny the stadiums were abandoned. Lol
@@vinny7114 So, basically, there are very few abandoned structures in Rio, especially because it was an edition that involved many temporary structures. What gave the impression of abandonment was mainly the delay in dismantling and reconverting some structures.
Everything in games today in poor condition includes:
- BMX Center, Olympic Tennis Center, Rio Municipal Velodrome (Which is undergoing renovations).
Instead, they focused on:
Swimming in the sewer doesn't seem like a good way to reinvent things 😂😂😂
Even Rio managed to clean its bay to the point that dolphins and whales have returned to it
Fun to come back afterwards.
Fact is the Paris olympics were a smashing success and the risks taken payed off, especially the venues in the city.

This already changed when LA hosted in 1984, it just slowly reverted over the years until now
Meanwhile, the 23rd SEA Games held in Manila last 2005 held its opening ceremony at an open air grandstand. 👏
I’d love to watch a video about the logistics of the Paris 2024 opening ceremonies, like the timing of the boats and recorded parts would be cool to learn about
your data is out of date most hotel prices are plummeting since hotels and airbnbs are struggling to fill their rooms during the games
LA 2028, will be hosting summer Olympics for the 3rd time, LA made profits previously.
Salt lake City will be hosting Winter Olympics 2035, also it's 3rd time hosting.
Seems like they're actually taking a lot of good steps. I'm happy for everyone advantaged by this.
