  • Here's my review of the second season two hour premiere of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. A lot had changed from season one including the addition of a character named Hawk played by actor, Thom Christopher.

I love Hawk. The feather wig was brilliantly crafted. The body armour fantastic and specially imposing as it was in all black. Super cool! And I wouldn't think of anyone to play this role but Thom Christopher.

I don't think I hit that point hard enough. If they could have kept up the quality of "Time of the Hawk", maybe it would have been a more successful second season. But you're right, after this first episode, he was often under utilized.

The 2nd part of the episode "Time Of The Hawk" the scene where Hawk is put on trial and the judges were about to pass a sentence, and Buck stands up and delivers his impassioned speech about Hawk's motives for what he'd done and saying that, given the same provocation, he'd have done the same thing himself
That showed that Buck empathized with Hawk on the atrocities committed against his people and didn't blame for the actions that he'd taken to avenge them

But I will say Time of the Hawk was a good episode. The only one of S2.
It's a shame what they did to Wilma's character. Gil Gerard seemed bored with the role. No Ardala! Stories that were bland in comparison to S1.

I remember being 7 or so and ripping that advert you showed for "Time of the Hawk" out of the TV Guide when this season finally turned up for broadcast. I even had the tape recorder handy so I could record the audio as my folks did not yet have a VCR. To this day it's still the only episode of Buck Rogers I can vividly remember seeing during its original prime-time run. It's also still my favorite story of the entire series.

When you made reference to Battlestar Galactica, I figured it'd be prudent to point out that a lot of the props and scene locations that were used in Battlestar Galactica were recycled and used in both seasons of Buck Rogers and the 25th Century
    Examples include:
The Powerlock used in the season 1episode "Space Vampire" was the medallion/key to the ninth Lord of Kobol in the BSG two-part episode which Apollo married Serena despite the fact that she's now a viper pilot
The Earth Alliance Starfighters were original design for The Colonial Vipers
The Rank pins on the commanding officers of the race that Mark Lenard's character was were The same pins used by The Viper pilots in BSG
The Dorian ship used in the series finale was originally used as a Cylon tanker ship in BSG
The Rover that Wilma used to track down Buck when he had Twiki and Dr Theopolis take him into the remains of Chicago was used in the Battlestar Galactica episode "Greetings from Earth, part 2"
Even Hawk's blaster pistol, which was used as a Cylon blaster pistol in BSG
Then again, The costume designer on both of those shows was The same person, Jean-Pierre Dorleac

Got to admit it Dave, I liked Hawk and even enjoyed season two. I had Buck, Wilma, and Twikki action figures, a Starfighter, some kind of planetary colony playset with Draconian ships and Starfighters. I do remember wondering why the show had changed so much, but I loved and watched it every week. Was really bummed out when it was cancelled.

I don't know why season 2 is disliked by many.I enjoyed it equal to season one. It was a very different premise on purpose. I enjoyed most of the episodes. There were some lame one, like the final episode but then again there were some lame one in the first season as well. I thought "The Satyr" was the best episode of both seasons.

I have s2 of Buck Rogers on blu-ray--- it's hilarious how the hi-def brings out all of the foam rocks and painted plywood sets. But the spaceships look good. Ms. Luna still looks great in her you-tube interview "Word on westerns, star trek's barbra luna, mirror, mirror her classic episode" , Ruta Lee, another gorgeous actress from the 60's still looks good on another "a word on westerns" video.

This first episode of season 2 was pretty good, but the show seemed to fade after this. Gil Girard has stated many times that he hated season 2... and said the theme was too much like Battlestar Galactica. He also praised Thom for doing the best he could with the Hawk character. The Hawk character had so much potential, but he was very underutilized as the show went on.

I agree with you completely on Buck Rogers Season 2. Why change something that worked? However, I did enjoy Thom Christopher as Hawk and much of this episode. At the time that it first aired, I was a Starlog reading kid and I used my effects / studio knowledge to call Universal Hartland. They made the effects for Galactica and Buck. I actually got through to them and told them how cool I thought Hawk's ship was and what a great job they did on the battle between Buck and Hawk. Whoever was on the phone said. "Thank you."

Thanks Dave for a really wonderful review especially on Thom Christopher. I actually thought Twiki was a real robot when I was 11, Twiki didn't get the funny lines in the second season. My theory on why Buck Rogers went in a different direction in the second season was because it didn't want to look repetitive, Buck saves the girl happened quite a bit. Hawk was one of a kind, I had empathy for the character and that is one of the reasons I was drawn to the character, he used various expressions, Thom Christopher is a thespian actor and he didn't make Hawk overly like a Shakespeare character, he has the right balance. He did a lot of work before and after Buck Rogers, he's also a song and dance man. For the record Hawk's headgear is made of chicken feathers.

Thom is my Facebook friend, so I posted your link to his wall, he liked it! :) Hawk had a lot of depth, personality, aloofness, then he would have a sly smile even though he could be straight laced, he'd put a wall/guard around him in fear of getting hurt or let down, but you're absolutely right in saying no actor could play Hawk. Thom should have got an award for his performance as Hawk, he later got an award for his performance as Carlo a mob boss in a soap called One Life To Live, then he played a very funny nerd with glasses as Mortimer who was the twin brother of Carlo.

Cool vid, Dave! Season 2 had it's moments. There are a few episodes I refuse to watch, they are sooo bad. But Time of the Hawk is not one of them. Hawk was an awesome character and probably one of the few highlights of S2. He was off to a promising start but somewhere along the way, Hawk got reduced to a fairly secondary character, along with Wilma, which is a shame. I think a show which featured Hawk more prominently would have channeled a Kirk-Spock vibe which may have appealed to the sci-fi audience, But ultimately, the poor writing and poor casting probably killed the show. Thanks for posting!

Ok, when I was a kid, I'll never forget laughing my rear end off when I saw Hawk. When I was a LITTLE kid, when the show originally aired, in my area, NBC and ABC changed channels. And I couldn't get the local NBC affiliate with my antenna, so I would have to turn it to see a South Carolina station. So, as a kid, I just lost touch with Buck Rogers when the network switch happened. I heard people talk about it and it sounded interesting. But I didn't see it until the Sci-Fi Channel opened for business...And I died laughing as a cynical early 20-something after seeing Hawk. A bird person that is signified by feathers on their head! And I just laughed at the season as a whole. I still liked Season 1 due to Ardala and nostalgia, but Season 2 was rough!
A while back I watched it all again on DVD and I feel a little better toward it. I know they didn't have the budget to go all in with Hawk. But I liked his character a lot. He's kind of the no-nonsense buddy that Buck needs. Wilma filled that role in Season 1, but...Ugh! They did her wrong in Season 2. As you said, let's leave it at that. But, yeah, Hawk was a high-point in Season 2. If the stories had been a bit better and more along the lines of the first year, it might have gotten many more seasons...

Hawk!!! He'll Save Every One Of Us!!! Amazing video!!! Hawk is perhaps the coolest of all sci-fi characters by evoking Elvis at his prime in the '69 Special with the leather suit, the sculpted muscles of the future Batman and other super hero movies, the leather feathers which were a touch all his own, a whiff of Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets, and the gravitas inherent in every movement. I never realized his wife was Barbara Luna, but I did so love her in Mirror, Mirror. Did you know she later acted again in Star Trek??? Here is a link to Star Trek New Voyages and one of the episodes in which she appeared. True, New Voyages is a fan production, but I promise if you love Star Trek TOS, Barbara Luna, Walter Koenig, George Takei, and a slew of other Star Trek alumni, you must see both Star Trek New Voyages and Star Trek Continues, both of which (after you give them a few episodes) will blow you away with production values, scripts, energy, love, etc. ua-cam.com/video/uybWdnrcvps/v-deo.html

I had the amazing opportunity to travel to his sets and even met William Shatner there in May 2018. Touring the sets is exactly like walking the corridors of the USS Enterprise. Cawley has ties to the Next Gen productions. The Okudas are highly involved in his projects as well as other TNG crew. Continues is a more polished production and is much more deliberate about re-creating the original series where New Voyages struggles with the problems of all pure fan productions and attempts to update to the TV standards of the time in which it was produced. I almost envy your ability to see all the New Voyages episodes for the first time!

I mostly remember from season 2 "Journey to Oasis" because of the voice of Ezarhaaden and his lightsaber-like sword and that little blue laughing prankster known as Odee-x! Oh yeah and the dude who could remove his head played Mark Lenard! But Dr. Goodfellow as played by Wilfrid Hyde-White was the reason I don't remember much else. I can only seem to recall his annoying character and the Hawk character had potential.

Hawk was my favorite character from Season 2 and I was so sad that Mego didn't make a figure of him. I wanted Hawk to battle the Empire alongside Buck and Luke Skywalker. A couple months ago I noticed a customizer makes 3-D printed action figures and created one so I had to buy it. Forty years later and I have Hawk lol.

Dave I didn't watch very many episodes of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. I definitely remember the character Hawk portrayed by actor, Thom Christopher though. According to the IMDB Website he appeared in 11 episodes! I preferred Battlestar Galactica, mainly because I had a huge crush on the actors Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict! 😀

I personally would have liked to see Hawk get away and become what I guess you would call the antihero. Helping others but still causing trouble for the military and the real bad guys. Him and Buck not really friends but with a big respect for each other and not the sidekick he became. Talking about Wilma's outfit Erin Gray one time called it dairy queen in space.

Hawk was cool and badass! Too bad he was the only good thing about season 2. I even created a Hawk type character, Lt. Falcon, for a Star Trek type RPG after him back in the late 1980s. Later did a female Jedi called Raven for a Star Wars RPG. Always look forward to your nostalgic reviews! I think we liked the same shows! LOL

I certainly remember Hawk. First time I saw him he was a "bad" guy (who later became one of the good guys fighting alongside Buck Rogers). I remember Buck Rogers, and some woman loudly yelling out "HAWK! HAWWWWK!" as her yells reached into outer space. Can you get me that episode?
How about the one weird episode where doppelgangers, I guess: one, of Pamela Hensley on the ship, yelling over and over in panick, as lasers were firing around her, when she became a smoking flat cake of ... meat? Then, someone pushed Hawk to the ground, and he became a smoking pile of meat. I think they both were doppelgangers, duplicates of the real characters.
    What was that episode?

  • @oldgoat142

Wilma looked absolutely ridiculous in that outfit. As for Hawk, what a way underutilized character. So much potential from a good actor just absolutely wasted. Ditto, "the bad guys." They weren't a serious threat at all, (nor were any others later on, come to think of it), even though the actors portraying them had done solid roles as heavies in other things. As for the costume dept, what the hell were they smoking when they came up with that gimmick for the citizens of Neutralis? As much as I tried to, I just couldn't hang with the 2nd season. I still roll my eyes thinking, "Man, you pretty much flushed that one down the tubes."

I understand why you hate Wilma Deerings' "air hostess" costume in the second season of the series, but on the other hand, I'm very glad for Erin Gray because she could actually breathe in her costume...even though she still couldn't sit down in that teeny-tiny skirt without giving the rest of the cast and crew an eyeful! Also, those skin-tight, synthetic jumpsuits would be awfully hot to wear because they'd trap in the body heat and the perspiration...now that's not sexy!

Interesting how Universal produced two popular science fiction TV shows that had lousy truncated second seasons before being canceled. Just like Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century returned to TV for a second season, but with significant changes for the worse. Many characters from season one of Buck Rogers were gone, including Princess Ardala and Dr. Heuer. As for Bird Guy, he was a complete joke. I agree that Erin Gray looked much better wearing spandex than that awful sailor uniform.

I did not care for the Buck Rogers reboot into space. Looking back, it seems like they were trying to copy BSG or Han Solo... this one episode though was really interesting for me, b/c it was an interesting twist to see Buck outmatched as a pilot, and he does what every decent villain would do, he grabs Hawk's girl! What also stuck in my memory is the ending where the girl can choose to live but tied to the wizard's cave. And she has regrets for missing flying, having children, and decide to die. I prob have nostalgia glasses on, but it seemed like a really well done episode albeit the ending fight b/w hawk and buck sucked w/ literal deus ex machina to make them friends. The rest of the season was pretty forgettable except for that one episode w/ the space vampire. That was kind of scary and hot.

    Here’s my thing with Hawk…
He starts out as the he ultimate badass. It generally known through the universe that if you see Hawk…you die. Don’t mess with Hawk, he is feared by all, good and bad.
By about episode 4 or so he is….
Buck --heard a noise of Screen
Buck--hey Hawk go check that out
    Buck-find an injured person
Buck--hey Hawk look after him while I go do battle.
Buck--stay here with the women while I go do the super cool stuff.
I know that Buck was both the cause of Hawks wife’s death, yet somehow Hawk was in debt to Buck for his life
But come on, Hawk went from ultimate badass to Bucks ineffectual side kick so quick it makes your head spin

I was in my late teens or early 20s when Buck Rogers was on. I remember finding Season 1 mostly irritating, a dismal imagining of what mankind would be like in the future, but I kept watching in hopes it might improve. Something I always thought would greatly help the show would be to give Buck a very strong, smart male friend (co-star)., so I was delighted with the addition of Hawk in Season 2. The opening 2-parter was campy as always, but promising. (Completely agree with the weakening of Wilma and the silly, flimsy-looking uniforms of the men and women on their exploration ship.) Unfortunately, as you say, after that first 2-parter the writers mostly turned Hawk into a picturesque sidekick who rarely got to do anything satisfying. The show desperately needed better writers!

  • @digipeeper

For me Season 2 had a good premise and concept it was very poorly written. Like Space:1999 the 2nd and final season just got camp and it felt like Fred Friedberger was helming the show.
I like the character of Hawk, he was Worf before Worf . The outside Nemesis who now ally with the Heroes.
I think he is the best thing in the 2nd Season period.
Also to add, Paul Carr who also guest star as Lt. Devlin was in Star Trek as Lee Kelso in the 2nd Pilot. He and many of the guest stars in that Trek episode became the basis of fan fiction of a early crew that could have been for Kirk if they didn’t leave or die.
The guest villains in the Season 2 opener also has two familiar face, Lance Legault who has been a Glenn Larson fixture as guest villains and beyond and Sid Haig(the bearded bald guy) he too always plays tough guys and henchmen. Currently he is more synonymous as Captain Spaulding in the Rob Zombie horror flick.
Thom Christopher is a very talented actor and he should have been in any of the 4 Star Trek series that aired between 87-04.
