I think it does matter to some degree. Especially if you pay a full 60 dollars for the game. At some point quantity does matter. Yes I would rather play a good 4 hour game over an 8 hour one. But if I have only money for one game and my choice is a 10/10 4 hour or 8/10 long game with replayability I’ll pick the longer game. But that’s just me.
It's not a company thing tho. It's gamer thing. "Game is only X hours" is such a common complaint that I'm not surprised big companies would rather make filler content to stretch gameplay time. Even I am guilty of that, despite being conscious that shorter game doesn't mean bad, I often stop myself from buying one because "oh it's so short but so expensive, I rather buy something else".

As I told one of my friends while discussing anime: "All good things come to an end because good things know when to be over; terrible things go on forever".
Idk if that was your intentions but the fact that manga eventually end is a big difference between American superhero comic and Japanese comic. Since the popular superhero comics are never going to end, none of the characters / story developments really matter in the long run and everything will reset back to a status quo at some point. I used to be a fan of Marvel and DC stuff but now I just couldn't care less.
"4 hours isn't a negative." After hearing this video in full, yeah I understand your reasoning very much. What matters is the fulfilment I received while playing. RE2 remake isn't that long on a second or third playthrough, but because it hooked me on its' setting, characters, and gameplay(survival horror fan), I got way more longevity out of it than a typical looter shooter, or open-world grind fest. Thanks Ray, you put the words to my thoughts yet again.
Enemy encounters and ammo amounts in RE2 can also be seen as somewhat random too, it keeps the moment to moment gaming exciting instead of rote grinding. The hidden dynamic difficulty in play and random zombie health and movement behaviour makes each playthrough and encounter unexpectedly challenging even when you thought you've mastered movement and aiming, the enemies keep surprising you unlike most games where enemy behaviour is quickly learned and exploited in every fight. We're likely going to see even more of this in RE3 with Nemesis being much more unpredictable and aggressive compared to the relatively forgiving Mr X.
Just wanted to say that I loved the cool edit at 6:22. Where the first shot is the group riding in RDR1, and the second one is RDR2. Really good timing, felt seamless!

It's good to hear someone who feels like I do. I'm always wanting a new experience nowadays, I want the next truly unique game, something that I'll remember for years. I can't really afford to get too many new games though, so I often have to return to old reliable multiplayer games that I can replay. But nothing's better than playing something truly worth remembering. It's among the greatest joys in the world to me.
Play Terminator Resistance. Way better than Wolfenstein Youngblood. Also, better add Activision, Ubisoft, WB Games, etc to that list. Pretty much every Western gaming companies have sold their souls and passion. Japan and Eastern Europe devs/games are where you find games made the way they used to be.
I figure this is a good time to share a personal story, since it's something very much related to this topic. Back when I was going through the Trails in the Sky trilogy, I was mesmerized, and when it was over, I was all but done with it. I didn't leave wanting more, but I didn't leave wishing it was over sooner either. I left it wanting to share it, and it became a game for me I dread playing through again on my own, but streamed for others several times. I find the best games, once you're done with them yourself, you still can't help but want to experience it again with others. That the simple act of sharing it with another person and seeing how they react and respond to its highs and lows becomes enough to reinvigorate it entirely. I'll never pick up Trails in the Sky again for myself, but I know I'll make more saves just because I can share it with others who won't buy it for themselves, and that's praise I can't say about very many games. I doubt I'll ever go back to A Link to the Past or Final Fantasy 7 or any number of classic games heralded as greats of their era, but the act of sharing them with others seems to give them a new flavor entirely, as seen with the resurgence of LttP content and hype in the wake of a new way to play it with others.
The Dishonored series is the one that has made me feel that way the most... I have a combined 200 hours on the series, and it's only going to continue. The environments of Dunwall and Karnaca are so densely packed and immersive that they're one of the few linear games I wish would switch to open world simply so I can experience more of it. The gameplay compliments it perfectly. It's my favorite series for a good reason.
I'll never understand people who called Dishonored a disappointment. I still think about Karnaca's gorgeously realized world, and want to go back so bad. While yes, the game did have its flaws, the gameplay and map wasn't one. God, I actually wish I could just walk the streets on Karnaca, and witness it in all its beauty.
@@fatalmokrane Yes, Prey was a wonderful experience, but I don't have quite as much time on it because of how tense it is. As for the open world, I agree with you 100%. Dishonored 2 is around 60gb, and it took several years to create... It's be impossible in today's gaming economy. Maybe if they were given a huge team and a decade or so to fully develop it...
Ho doesn't? When a youtuber doesn't over state it's welcome for the sake of mass appeal "Pewdiepie" They are more likeable and have less flaws compared to the ones that become annoying after a while
It's really a funny feeling that i realised a year ago that the way i "consume" video games is i play a lot of one games and I'm hooked on multiplayer and playing with friends and then completely switch to solo campaigns and don't touch any other games to go back in full force into the multiplayer games. And this video made me realise that is is the feeling of acomplishement is different from games that are made to last for years and one that are made to last days Thanks for this and keep up the good work
Instant gratification in small quantities is why I loved CODMW and it's sequels. I love playing longer deeply involving strategic games. But I still enjoy jumping into shooters for instant gratification.

“Being 4 hours isn’t a negative” I wish more gamers understood that because complain length has become such an easy criticism you see online which makes companies not want to make shorter games.
Angry Joe catch frase "4Hours" Is mostly to blame for this, I have great memories of short games than I do longer games, but that's mostly because of my short attention spam
That Guy Again It depends on what your budget is. I’d prefer a 20 hour game over a 4 hour game for $60. $15 an hour requires an extremely sound story to make it worth it.
*People are pissed of because litterally every major 2020 AAA game got delayed.* Raycevick: "Games Should Leave You Wanting More" Mate, you are playing with fire...
I'm very greafull they are delayed, I pre-ordered rdr2 on rockstar launcher, because I like their games and been playing them since I was a kid. And rockstar shit the bed with the PC port, I thought the days of broken PC ports were behind us.
I'm repeatedly amazed at how you hit the nail exactly on the head with these topics, I love seeing the deeper sides of this industry. Good stuff as always
It's great that you covered many different aspects of the market here, including F2P and multiplayer games, because I believe this has a huge impact on game length. The significant mainstream growth of multiplayer - along with massive budgets and player expectations - mean that a lot of these experiences in the last decade are now designed with a particular interest in hooking players long-term. As a result, I think many expect single-player games at the same price-point to occupy an equal measure of their day-to-day lives. That being said, the 'Over X hours' marketing line has been used before games-as-a-service became so prevalant, so perhaps this is a coincidence. Also, there have been some absolutely wonderful edits tied with music in both this, and your MW Years Later! It gives me an incentive to go back and watch parts again just to catch certain transitions or effects.
As I get older with more responsibilities and less time the more I have come desire and appreciate those 4hr-10hr quality campaigns. Love your videos. Thank you for your quality work.
I may have played the first two Max Payne games a dozen times each. They're such a perfect length, and I finish them ready to go back in again. They never wore out their welcome, and the thought of going back in never left me wondering if they'd cut into something else. I like big lengthy games. The Yakuza games are delights, even as huge as they can be. But my favorites are the 'fun afternoon' games. The ones where I say "I haven't played that in awhile" and then the rest of my afternoon is revisiting that old digital friend.
Waiting for a good game is the same as waiting for a Raycevick video. You might have to wait for a while, sometimes you give into the the urge to replay the older stuff, but then, when it does drop, it's just so good you can't take your eyes off it.
I think this is why I loved red dead 2 so much. Just when you thought it was over, there was an epilogue that was just as fleshed out as any of the other chapters. I was left wanting more and got it! And then I still want more...
LOVE the points you made - especially about the UA-camrs (funny enough, you're one of them - every word is taken to heart, like when Heath Ledger is on screen during the Dark Knight), playtime ("Being 4 hours isn't a negative"), the wait-time (made me realize how consuming less actually makes things "taste" better at the end) and how much one can afford (think the majority can relate to that). This is a important video, happy you made it!
Man, the last quarter of this video is exactly what I feel every time you upload. Taking all the time you need to work on your videos only makes it more rewarding everytime you pop up in my subscription box.
This is one reason I'm into indie and small developer games. Innovation is a requirement because without it, their games wouldn't rise above the overpopulated baseline. They often can't be long because they don't have the means or will to stretch interesting mechanics past the point that they become mundane. I'll always have more fun in a game that wraps up succinctly in less than 10 hours of great gameplay and story than I will a game that drags itself to 30+ without comparable value. The issue in mainstream game development is that some publishers now want everything monetized perpetually. Bethesda is particularly egregious as we've seen with recent releases. They expect a game to draw in a long term audience in order to sell them a season pass and microtransactions. Youngblood is the way it is because of that "Gold Bars" purchase option. Had it been better received, it most likely would have gone even further.
Thank you, thank you , thank you, THANK YOU! At the risk of sounding like a typical nostalgia junkie, it is sad that "X amount of hours played" is somehow indicative of overall quality these days. POP: Sands of Time is barely ten hours in playtime and it is STILL one of the most moving games I've experienced. No NG+ (I think?), no "postgame khantent" that people seem to demand be in every title. You play the game, progress through the levels, then you finish it. Wanna play it again? Go right ahead. Enjoyed your time with it but want to move on? That's fine too. But industry standards seems to have swallowed these kinds of games up. It's kind of sad, really.
I have never known a gamer youtuber to make me question what i play and why i play it. It really brings in to scale how i spend my money and more improtantly, my time. such a good channel!
When FarCry 3 ended, i didn't want more. I was fulfilled by everything the game had to offer. I was happy to leave the game where it ended. Anything more would have ruined it in my opinion. It was perfect. It's the only exception that comes to my mind...
Did i hear some Scandroid in the background ? Nice. Terrific work as always, what you said about waiting for stuff, wanting more, instead of having it poured to you at regular intervals, is exactly how i see your channel. You, and Internet Historian, are the only two UA-cam channels which provide me this feeling. Each time i see a new Raycevick video, it's like an event in my head, you embody the topic you're talking about haha !
Gosh I miss me some Doom, Perfect Dark and Timesplitters. Think I can get all but Timesplitters on me Xbox but still like he said in the video, I enjoy missing these great titles.
Perfect Dark got a great remaster on Xbox 360/One. It may come to pc/Steam too given Halo MCC is. Timesplitters Trilogy deserves a remaster. We might get that.
This really hit home because for the last two years I've bought more games than I can even begin to play. Growing up, getting a game was a rarity; it was something my parents did on at least a 4-5 month basis. This really let me soak in all the games I played as a kid and a teenager. This experience left me thankful and eager to soak up as much of the next new game I could. But, sure enough, once I was on my own and could buy my own games and consoles at will, I binged hard. I bought hundreds of games for at least a dozen consoles/handhelds/PC with the unhealthy mindset of 'making up for all the games I didn't get to play as a kid'. Little did I know this would leave me with a bloated library of titles across multiple platforms that will likely remain unplayed for many, many years to come. Only recently have I slowed down in my frenzy to acquire title after title. I've begun the honest effort to sit and work on my library. I want to enjoy a game to its fullest, and once I feel content, I want to be able to look forward the next game I play just like I did in my younger years.
@bjamin30 Yeah, for the most part. It's still hard to pass up buying cheap games on sale, but the hardest part is stopping myself from buying the new games that come out (they all look so good). What helped the most was deleting all of my digital games except for maybe 3-5 of them. This way I stop myself from getting frustrated over what game to play. I had to kind of force myself to stick with one game, but past the 2 hour mark I start getting invested again.
@bjamin30 I know just what you mean. I actually bought borderlands 3 with the exact same mindset. I also picked up the outer worlds because I loved new vegas growing up, but it's been sitting in my library for months unplayed. Been playing the persona titles steadily and even finished persona 4. JRPG grinding has actually been the closest thing to something I know I love that I've found recently.
Your point about not wanting content creators to upload more because it makes what they do say more impactful is especially relatable to this channel as well. I see a “raycevick” upload and I immediately go on a break to see what you have to say, and then spend the rest of the day reflecting on it
Hey does anyone remember that UA-camr that Raycevick shouted out a while ago who reviews the overall gun mechanics of a game. He goes over things like weapon handling, impact, sound effects and the like, I remember that one of his videos was on Metro, but I can't for the life of me remember his channel name. Oh and Raycevick, if you really want to be left wanting more as a viewer, you HAVE to check out Ahoy. His upload schedule may be akin to that of Valve's but man are his videos perfection. His documentaries, weapon history videos and investigative journalism are really second to none. (my favorite being Polybius, it's an hour long, but every single minute is time well spent)
You're talking about my friend Clu, and his video series Gunplay. His Max Payne 3 episode is excellent. And yes, I do need to check out Ahoy's more recent content. I still know him as the Weapon Guide Man from the Black Ops days.
I’ll never understand your claim that Old Blood has more agency and options than the New Order. Old Blood’s biggest criticism is how restrictive it is when compared to New Order
Really? I haven't seen much of that critique online, and even as such, I very much disagree with it. What I'm referring to when discussing agency is direct control. New Order is an experience that is frequently broken up by cutscenes, cinematic setpieces, and HQ Missions. Meanwhile, Old Blood is far more gameplay driven, and the handful of moments control is taken away from the player, it's still all told through BJ's eyes. Facilitated by the teams lower budget, and tighter schedule.
Old Blood is indeed quite shit compared to New Order. I'd go so far as to say New Order remains the only good game in the entire selection of MachineGames Wolfenstein titles.
Another great video, Raycevick. You never disappoint. My take on YOUNGBLOOD was that it's a generally enjoyable fps (I was able to get the game at a duscount at launch). Despite it's notable flaws (specifically those at launch that were soon patched and fixed), it delivered flatout fun gunplay, challenge and the way you were able to upgrade and customize weapons was pretty cool. I thought it was a solid game. I actually enjoyed the Terror Twins' juvenile antics, specifically because they were juveniles themselves, which for the the life of me, I could not understand why people didn't get that. People were so up in arms against this game when it released, you'd think Youngblood murdered someone's puppy with the hatred it was receiving, especially when alot of the complaints were downright unreasoanble. The problem I had with Youngblood's detractors was that alot of them hadn't even played the game, yet agreeing with and spreading the false narrative that the game was crap. I literally spoke with tons of people in the comment sections of various channels covering the game, and they outright admitted they never touched the game and only watched video reviews if it, yet they were dictating to ME why the game sucked. Those who claimed to have played the game were grossly overexaggerating, or totally blowing out of proportion, the issues the game did have while ignoring or outright denying any of the game's strengths, to the point that it became absurd just talking to them. I'm all for shitting on a game if it is indeed packed with bullshit, especially at launch, but I'd never jump on a hate bandwagon against it, not unless I could verify it's shittiness from my own direct experience playing it.
Great video! I definitely think it's better to leave people wanting more than less. It's like a song. One that you wish was longer usually leaves you with a better feeling than one that overstays its welcome

I love these videos because everytime I see one drop i can just sit down and watch a thoroughly entertaining and informative video and it genuinely makes my day. Keep up the good work man.
There is a good chance it will, for starters I dabble in level design as a hobby and thus I follow of a lot of professional LDs on twitter and I've recently noticed that quite a few of talented people joined Machine Games. If that's an indication of anything, Wolf3 should be light years ahead of Youngblood and it might even have a chance to top the New Order and The New Colossus if they're gonna do it right
I totally agree with you. This is also why I don't like replaying games or rewatching movies: I want something good to stay in my memory the way I experienced it for the first time.
How you manage to always create top quality videos every single time? NakeyJakey, Super Bunnyhop and you are my favorite UA-camrs and a inspiration to me, thank you

I feel exactly the same way on dishonored.

I know what you mean; there's some games I just boot up to feel that mixture of nostalgia, while discovering new things about them.
Speaking of playing memorable games, I would really like it for Rayce to try out the Ace Combat games and hear his thoughts about them.

I just wanna say that your thumbnails are some of the best in the game.
If there's a title for "UA-camrs should leave you wanting more", Raycevick would win it.

@@Gruntvc I hope that we do! Timeplitters was the BOMB! Played way too much of TS2 and Future Perfect as a kid.

I see a “raycevick” upload and I immediately go on a break to see what you have to say, and then spend the rest of the day reflecting on it
Prime example of this title being titanfall 2 IMO

I knew I liked you but playing Scandroid's Afterglow in the background? Hell. Yes. One of my favorite albums of all time.
Loved the video, you explained the gaming industry as of today what it has become. I 100% agree with you. Keep making these videos
Dang, youtube made me miss this yesterday, but thanks for uploading on my birthday!
