Best Cable Tie (zip tie) Brand? Let's Find Out!

- CABLE TIES TESTED: Thomas & Betts, Panduit, Gardner Bender, ACT, Store House (Harbor Freight) and Strong Ties. Stainless Steel cable ties tested: HYCC, Gardner Bender and Store House (Harbor Freight). I purchased the cable ties tested over a year ago and split up the cable ties into 2 groups. Group 1 did not experience sunlight (ultraviolet). Group 2 did experience sunlight for the past year. UV exposure did have a big impact on the cable ties. To add some fun to the testing, the zip ties along with JB Weld were used to hold a cylinder head onto an engine without using cylinder head bolts to see how long the engine would run. Also, the strongest stainless steel cable tie was tested to see if just 1 cable tie would support the weight of a small pickup truck. Thanks again and best regards, Todd

Everyone, Sorry it's taken so long, but please let me know if you find this "rolodex" style list of videos on products tested helpful. bit.ly/2FCrBpk A big thank you to Jim for putting this together. It was a lot of work! Is there anything that can be done to improve the list? Also, thank you for waiting over a year for this follow-up to the original cable tie video and thank you all VERY much for being so generous in supporting the channel! Your recommendations for future video ideas are amazing, and I’ve been ordering a lot of products and test equipment for upcoming episodes. Looking forward to reading your comments and video ideas! How can exposure to UV strengthen the ties?
I trust this gentleman more than Consumer's Reports.

There are a lot of products I have purchased after seeing PF testing, love the fact that he isn’t influenced by manufacturers and the testing is so fair
There is nothing more permanent than a temporary repair! A very important test, thank you project Farm!
Thank you!
It's like someone on YT says.."it's only temporary unless it works" Can't remember who says that but there's so much truth in that.
This statement is incredibly true! Temporary fixes become permanent if it doesn't break
Unless someone will die, it's good for tape or tie.

The dedication on this channel is immense

Great follow-up. Just one note on your results: If you look at 7:31, the failure mode suggests that the stainless ties would have held even more weight if they were wrapped tightly around something... the bottoms would not have folded out, and the mechanisms would therefore have held on longer. I think that could be a valuable lesson for those who use stainless ties!
Still more secure than a Masterlock though :D
Love to see how diverse this community is
But how hard is the cable tie to pick?

If 2020 wasnt weird enough... Now zip-ties exposed to sunlight get stronger...???
NOT what I was expecting.
Awesome job.
Thanks so much!
Same! I'm totally stunned!
There are five characteristics of a material. Strength,Hardness, Brittleness, Ductility, and Toughness. Radiation from the sun causes materials to become brittle at the same time the are Harder and Stronger however when Brittle Fracture occurs it is more violent. Ductility and Toughness are inversely proportional so mode of failure can also change. Hope this helps.
@@hicaltv4648 I was thinking along the same lines. It's like steel. You can make carbon steel very hard and it's strength will increase, but at some point it becomes so brittle it is no longer useful.
I would find it useful to know how the 1 year UV exposure was applied. Were they laid outside on some kind of surface, such as metal or wood. Bunched in the original bag or individually separated. In Arizona or Illinois. Also, what kind of oxidizer was used on the stainless steel tests. Chlorine bleach e.g. "straight", 2 cups/gal.H20, or some other oxidizer.
I'd say there is an advantage to having the latching mechanism fail slightly before the cable does. You might not entirely lose whatever it's holding.
Great point! I agree! Ty Rap did great in this area

Some zip ties will crumble after UV exposure or even just sitting in a drawer for a couple years
Thanks so much!
@GTOger Just needs some drum beats in his video......
I wonder if the towing companies could start using zip ties to repo vehicles with.
It crazy that most of the plastic ties performed better after a year of UV exposure. Very interesting and GREAT video!

The cable ties are picked before they are fully ripe so they don't bruise in transit. The sunlight just brings them to maturity.
Your channel is literally the ONLY channel I will let a almost 3 minute long ad fully play out. lol Thank you for all you do

How about a comparison between different brands of brake parts cleaner to see which one is the best
Thanks for the video idea.
I have a prediction. It's going to be whichever one is the most carcinogenic.
I use Mac from Napa, Balkamp, and several other brands on our semi trucks, they all perform the same as far as I can tell.
Then compare to a dish soap, Dawn or Palmolive.
After years of using CRC I would be interested in watching that video to see whether or not spending the extra $3 every time I bought brake cleaner made a difference
Those stainless zip ties are great. I'll have to stick a few in my bag.
They're really nice. One warning however, me and my dad use them for the header wrap on out drag cars, and if you pull them tight without a pair of pliers you WILL get a naaaaasty cut. I went down to the bone on my index finger trying to once, never again. The sides of the ties are just like the edges of a sheet of tin or a cut aluminum can. SHARP!!
NoahThe NotSoPro nice tip 👍
They won't just cut your hand, they also have the negative side effect of chewing through what they fasten more aggressively than plastic
Just dont wrap them around plastic on something that vibrates
Thanks for sharing.
dude the pace of these videos is far more relaxed than the newer videos, much easier to watch

Awesome! Thank you!
It's really interesting that the triple lock ones did not do as well as the double lock. Also very surprised that UV light seemed to help more cable ties than it hindered.
Thanks for the feedback.
The UV can't penetrate at least the black zip ties, so it does a sort of case hardening where the skin of the ziptie is hard but the core is still mostly its original pliable plastic. Eventually air would get to the inside of the plastic as well and damage it, but it'll get stronger before failing completely.
Not a fair test with the truck. Look at all those weight saving holes in the body panels! :)

I've bought or switched to so many things based on your reviews/comparisons of different products and haven't been disappointed yet. There are thousands of product reviews and recommendations on UA-cam and the internet, but I truly feel like yours are unbiased. I feel like you go into the tests with a biases for your preferred brand but still manage to do a great job at fairly testing each product and not really showing which one you favor.
Thanks so much!
If any companies are watching; I have done the same. I even went as far as changing my oil brand. Have not looked back at all. This testing works.

Glad you enjoy it!
At a former job the electricians tried numerus brands of zip ties that were supplied free of charge to test, we used large quantities of these zip ties so there were a lot of money to make for these companies selling them and a lot for the company to save on cheaper ties. But the end result was always the same, we bought Ty-Rap, boxes upon boxes with Ty-Rap in different sizes. I didn't care much but then I didn't use hundreds of these a day either. Nice test, really interesting!
Thanks so much!
Wait! That’s far from an entire pickup truck. There about 15% missing to rust! Kidding, great content as usual. I’m
Going to have to buy steel ties too.
Thanks 👍
Picking up the truck from the back end's probably lighter than trying to lift it from the front since what's where the bulk of the weight is likely to be due to the engine and everything else. Still, if you had a tractor handy, some chains, and a steel tie but no car jacks, I suppose it'd be a valid way to change your back tires?
are you kidding that's 110% pure bread farmtruck in its prime and in its natural environment, it wont be towed out to the back for at least 10 more years.......

@@ProjectFarmIts very rare for me to think of making any changes to your testing. More often you go above and beyond. However, I would love to see the stainless installed with the locking mechanism bearing up against a surface. The locking mechanism failed because it was allowed to spread open. The lifting of the truck showed that even through it has additional loops it confirms "my" suspicion.
The failure of the uv exposed black ties was interesting. Never would have guess that.
I would be interesting to see the the load capability with the zip tie in different positions. It may not make a big difference with the plastic but it should make a substantial difference with the stainless. Anyway, love you work.
Another year long test! Thank you for the time and effort of your extensive testing. Love all of your videos.

So what I'm hearing is, leave my cable ties in the sun for a year before use? Man, that's a lot of prep time.
Thanks for the feedback.
Haha
I believe brittle materials are better at tensile whereas ductile better for shear stress
You probably don't want them hardening before you set the shape and lock. Let them harden after application.
as" working guy" said i find they will snap before as you fold them around an object (course these my have been in the truck for more than a year!!)
Awesome video as always and thanks for all the time and effort you put into your videos
You are welcome!
This channel saves me so much money. Thank you!
I learned years ago when working in a manufacturing facility that nylon fasteners can dry out. The facility actually kept snap in nylon fasteners in a tray of water before use. I had a bag of zip ties which would fail when you tied them, the latch would break. I added a bit of water to the bag and tried them again a month later. No more breaking! I now add a bit of water to my plastic container of tie wraps.
Thanks for sharing.
I learned the same thing and boy does it make a difference. I bet the moisture content has more to do with the strength of these ties than the UV exposure.
Ties in the middle of winter are always more brittle due to the dry air. Summer humidity strengthened some of these.
Here in Colorado where we have extremely low humidity (1% in summer is not at all unusual and winter is almost as bad) I have terrible luck with zip ties! The same thing happened to me in that the locking mechanism would break as soon as the strap went into it. I swore off Harbor Freight zip ties years ago because that's the ones I had the most trouble with.
Once again very useful info. I'm always happy to see the "low cost option" beating out the overpriced brand names.
Thanks so much!

Fantastic work as always! I have used the Harbor Freight plastic cable ties in the past and they've been quite reliable in my experience. What really shocked me is that the UV seemed to harden them! Thanks for making such quality, unbiased videos!
Thanks for sharing. You are welcome!
I wonder if it's hydration improving the strength over time. For production, nylon has to be dehydrated but it has maximum strength after it has re absorbed some water (from the air or a post moulding bath).
honestly thought the harbor freight ties were inferior to other way more expensive ones I've got but your real world testing convinced me otherwise, mine are laying out in the sun as we speak!!!

Project Farm There are many styles more so than brands. Plain old link metal chains. Metal chains that cross the tread diagonally. Metal chains with cross bars on the links (tend to be better on ice).
