I have been learning congas and timbales for 6 months now. your UA-cam videos are absolutely the best and easiest to understand!!! I have my first live gig on congas next week!!! thanks for the videos! keep up the good work!!
Outstanding is an understatement. Thanks for helping set some direction to further develop my basic drumming techniques. From these we build. I agree with Bronkar, you are a gifted teacher.
You're welcome and I am glad you like this video. For more videos you can join me on Patreon. You can find over 300 new videos on my channel. I am looking forward to seeing you there.
Thanks Michael, that's excellent and has made me make another little jump in my conga playing. It's all about getting some inspiration when you feel against a wall. Now I have a new dimension to enjoy...
Excellent Michael! I agree with you: Ed Uribe's book "The Essence of Afro-Cuban Percussion and Drum Set" is the best instructional book for Afro-Cuban rhythms that I have found so far.
Well, thank you! I am very glad to see that my video's and my way of teaching can help you! And even inspire you to buy congas and starting practicing after such a long time. I hope you will enjoy the rhythms and the congas!!
Hi Michael- I’m glad to see that you truly play on the heel of your hand. I became a little confused after watching an Anga Diaz instruction video in which he says not to use the heel of the hand but rather slap the entire hand down for the heel. So...he was demonstrating almost a hand-toe/slap/toe-hand-toe/open-open motion. Does that make sense? I thought after practicing for a year I had been doing it all wrong. Is this a matter of individual style? I notice that some players really lay the hand down flat on the heel motion. Thx for any clarification.
Anga showed a modern style. There are more styles to play this technic. Actually Changuito and Giovanni started to play like this. It gives more power to tones that are hard to hear. In the old style (that I showed in this video) it is really the heel. In modern styles like timba, they play it with the complete hand. I hope it makes sense and you didn't practice it the wrong way.
Hey M, not sure if you realized that the notation for ex. at 7:08 is not the same as your instruction? In the video, you play “h t” but in the notation it’s “t h”.
I'm glad you like my video's. You can't find many video's of me playing in a group. I just use my channel for lessons.... I know other people post sometimes video's when I am playing, but I have to look for them too. Good luck!

Thanks for the history. Very helpful. I play the old style but I’ve been practicing the modern style as well.
Gracias por la clase, Michael. ¿Conoce ud. a Maite Hontele, la trompetista holandesa radicada en Medellín?
Gracias, Quintus, y claro yo coneco Maite! Muy buena trompetista holandesa!

Hi Michael, thank you for your lessons!! May I ask if that conga you are playing is a conga quinto 11"?
Thanks!
Hi Anjana, this my conga. My quinto is 11" and my conga is a little bit bigger, but I don't know if it is 12"....
Hello, can you tell me the name of the book you mentioned on this video please?Blessings

heel tip is unfortunate english name for marca- some take it literally and get the wrong sounds .I prefer to call it palm/touch
