    Sweet! Thanks Michael! Understanding HOW to find my place with a band is always a challenge. And you are right about all the different ways and instruments that a percussionist can play with a band. That's the reason I decided to learn and attempt to master becoming a percussionist. And any great band in history has always had a percussionist. Please continue to share your experience! Thanks again Michael!

      Thank you, James and I wish you good luck in finding the right rhythms and sounds in your band. It is very rewarding be a percussionist and to have so many possibilities!

    What a great mentor and warm heart towards music of all types. I follow your lessons on Afro-Cuban and have been venturing into Brazilian music -- It is an inspiration having you there to lead me on. Obviously, this lesson is about a different type of music and worldview, but you still treat it with grace and seriousness, and the tidbits on the percussionist's job is a new insight giving me a handle on my challenge -- no other site handles this. Thanks!

    Micheal Sir, Thank U for the Video!
    The Video is very relevant to what a Conga Player can do to fit into a Band playing Genre other than Latin Music.
    This is the 2nd Video of such type. 1st one was shown by Johanna Haminga Madam about how to fit Conga on Disco Pattern.
    We need more Tutorials on this. How to fit Congas in different Modern and Western Music, both Slow & Fast!

      Thank you, Matti! I am glad that you like the rhythm. About disco, I need to hear the groove before I know what I want to play. But most of the time you can just play the normal tumbao. Good luck!

  • @daveargall3454

    This is a really good lesson - very clear step by step instructions and the rhythm has a great feel, complementing the other instruments well. I am just wondering how long it might take you to work out the right variation.....for example say you were having a jam on a relatively unfamiliar rhythm for the first time?

    • @MichaeldeMiranda
      @MichaeldeMiranda  6 років тому +1

      Dave Argall Thank you, Dave! I don’t know how long it would take me, but I always listen to others and I try to adapt as fast as possible.

  • @daveargall3454
    @daveargall3454 4 роки тому +1

    Good guidance here on fitting conga playing with other elements and I really like your rhythm combination. I was wondering on whether this rhythm is based on 8ths or 16ths as on screen it looked like 16ths but the tumbao is generally using 8ths...?

    • @MichaeldeMiranda
      @MichaeldeMiranda  4 роки тому +1

      Most of the time salsa and latin rhythms are written down in Alla Breve using 8th notes. Pop music is often written in 4/4 with 16th notes. That is why there is often a difference. I wish you good luck!

    Michael, this is such a valuable lesson -- thank you! When you develop a pattern like this, do you then tend to vary it within the flow of the song? Or do you generally keep playing that pattern all the way through?

  • @maxshyt
    @maxshyt 5 років тому

    HI Michael, when practicing this I found actually the 1st bar can be played with continuous alternating (RLRL) sticking. Though I love the palm-finger movement but i still find it more efficient at fast tempos doing RLRL. What do you think on this approach?
