My respect sincerely you're without any doubt the best teacher in percussion in the whole UA-cam world! thank you so much for the wonderful tutorials you teach.
Mijn complimenten voor jouw video's. Erg leerzaam. Leuke anekdote van de master erbij is top! Zeer goed uitgelegd... Ik zal je in ieder geval blijven volgen. Bedankt
ES INCREIBLE ESTUDIE EL PRIMER MOVIMIENTO DE EL SONGO HACE YA MAS DE 20 AÑOS Y NUNCA LO PUDE ENTENDER A CABALIDA, Y AHORA VIENDO ESTE TUTORIAL SE ME ACLARAN VARIAS COSAS! GRACIAS
Great going, Michael. As I've always commented, you are a true teacher and master hand percussionist. To actually pick up the different varieties of Songo from when it is being played at actual tempo is very difficult and not all the books or other musicians will teach that many varieties, specially in detail. By the way, your, English and Spanish, is excellent. Their is no reason for the public not to understand you. Once again, Thank you very much, Ray
Hi Michael, I really appreciate that you have created a really great resource for these rhythms and that it is important to you to play them authentically. You and I both agree on that! The Songo pattern that Changuito showed you is one that I generally use in more of a Merensongo setting. Right on!
Thank you Again Michael! I am an ex. Professional Drumset Player and have wanted to play Congas for years.I finally picked up A couple congas and I am in two different bands playing percussion in less than 6 months. Because of your clear no BS instruction I am excelling @ it! You have the best lessons any where on YT or otherwise . keep it up and thank you for sharing your gift!
I like how the these congas patterns are completely different Orz.... any, thanks for your video Michael I have been self-learning Congas and watching your videos for like 3 yrs Really thankful for your vids, cant wait for more!
Well, my old teacher S. Boston showed me this pattern. He gave lessons to a lot of dutch percussionplayers. So a lot of them played songo like this for a long time!
Well, Changuito invented the songo when he was playing with Los Van Van. When this this rhythm became popular over the world (80's), a lot of players made their own interpretation of this pattern. So all over the world new songo's were created. I've watched the video and I like his version too!
Thank you! The second pattern you can play with a lot songs of Los Van Van. Specially the old songs. Look for a song called: Aqui el que baila gana. Changuito played with Los Van Van when they invented songo, so with this group you can jam along! Good luck!
No, it is a different clave. This is what they call the rumba-clave. If you watch my lesson on rumba guaguanco Matanzas style, you can see the pattern in notes. Good luck!
Thank you, Ray! On UA-cam there is also a video about Changuito, in which he explains the history of songo. That's a nice lesson too. Well, my spanish is not that good.... I should really study this! Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it!
You did it again! another great tutorial my friend. allow me to make a couple of suggestions. Beggining your videos with either the full rhythm played by you, or a famous song with this ryhthm (kind of what you did with Bembe Rhythm tutorial) would really help the student while learning the rhythm because they already have an idea of what it sounds like. Also, giving the name of some songs to listen or practice to would encourage the student to play.
that's interesting, because there is another video in youtube by a venezolian percussionist. look for the video "songo 1 movimiento" in the channel of "ProduccionesPrincipe". he also shows (nearly) the same songo pattern on congas
Thank you! I've just put a lesson about merensongo on my channel. And I've used this pattern for the congas. Los Van Van used this pattern a lot in the 80's. I hope you'll like the merensongo video too!
Hi Michael , I have great respect for the way you teach and knowledge of music and the different instruments. I have learned so much thanks to your videos , would like to ask you if you can recommend a song that I can play along with the second songo pattern , would like to jam along a song , i would greatly appreciated any suggestion .
It's ages since I played congas, but I'd like to get back into it - just for fun. What make of congas are you using here? Do you tune them down when not in use, or do you keep them at pitch? Also, are you using tumba and conga in this vid?
There is also the very popular (in it's time) style of songo played by many bands but especially recommended to check out by La Orquesta Ritmo Oriental (pre 2000). It's very different from the Los Van Van style but is also played in son bands of the songo eras.
Hi Mike, love your videos. I have a question though. You mentioned the "songo feeling". You have demonstrated the patterns, but what is "songo" exactly by definition..? What kind of feeling is that?
Well, it is difficult to explain, but songo is more a funky way of playing latin. When you play with a drummer (pop, funk), the timing changes more towards the beat, while latin styles are more between the beat... I think there is a video from Changuito where he explains it much better then I do.
Michael thanks for videos they're helping me develop as a player especially since live in a rural area. Do you teach private lessons or workshops in the Netherlands?
Master question when you play songo the count go 1and 2 and 3 and 4 and so for ? Or 1234? Can you explain that to me please i will appreciate that thanms
Mostly it is written in Alla Breve. That means you write it in 1234, but you count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. The tempo is often too fast to count 1234. So if you count the slow version till 4, two bars have past. I hope you understand what I mean. I wish you good luck!
Michael, you are to decent. Thanks for the advice, I have that video but, you are a much better teacher. And your Spanish is good, the only thing you need to brush it up a little is to get a, Cuban, girl friend. Ha! Ha! :)
Mi Tierra is not a songo. If you want to listen to song, I would advice you to listen to Los Van Van. You can find a lot of video's of this group on UA-cam and they are the inventors.
My respect sincerely you're without any doubt the best teacher in percussion in the whole UA-cam world! thank you so much for the wonderful tutorials you teach.

Thank you Michael, you're a great teacher. I like the piece of history that you bring along with the patterns. Your passion is communicative.

Congratulations!!!!! Really good video!!!!!!!!!
Another great video! So many variations to songo. If you check out Tomasito Cruz's book, there are some 15 different songo tumbaos!
It's ages since I played congas, but I'd like to get back into it - just for fun. What make of congas are you using here? Do you tune them down when not in use, or do you keep them at pitch? Also, are you using tumba and conga in this vid?
Thanks a lot! Keep enjoying the video's!
those tims look brass, I had the same pair, gave em to a buddy and he made them look beautiful and new. Polish them!
There is also the very popular (in it's time) style of songo played by many bands but especially recommended to check out by La Orquesta Ritmo Oriental (pre 2000).

As useful as always: gracias!
Very useful.
A question, what pattern are you playing on the Clave?
Your welcome and enjoy the video's!!
Thank you! Have fun with it!!
Gracias por tu gran aporte! Podrías agregarle subtitulos en español para que más personas se beneficien con el contenido ! 😀
When all the patterns are played together I play a 2/3 rumbaclave pattern. It is the same pattern that they use when they are playing guaguanco.
@twerpantine Those are my cuban congas. I don't think they make them anymore, but there is a branch (Timba) that makes them just like this.
Thank you!!!
Thank you very much, Marco!!
@RomancesyBoleros Your welcome!! I'll keep posting more!
gracias!!
Thanks a lot!!

Bueno Michael.
There are many variations of the songo rhythm
I could be wrong, but the 2nd pattern sounds like Merensongo; and the 3rd one sounds like Bota.
😍😍😍
Michael, you are to decent. Thanks for the advice, I have that video but, you are a much better teacher. And your Spanish is good, the only thing you need to brush it up a little is to get a, Cuban, girl friend. Ha! Ha! :)
Songo y merensongo
That is just one variation of Songo..Changuito invented over 15 variation in 3 and 4 congas too.
Mi Tierra is not a songo. If you want to listen to song, I would advice you to listen to Los Van Van. You can find a lot of video's of this group on UA-cam and they are the inventors.
