    Before you comment please read this. Yes I know the audio is distorting. I didn't realize it until after I had swapped the speakers and was editing the video. This was 4 years ago, I don't have the amp anynore, and I never dreamed the video would be viewed almost 40k times. Just take what you can from it, I'm sorry the audio isn't great. Thank you for watching! Check my orher stuff out, there's no more clipping in those lol.

    Swamp Thang all the way. When I play my 2 Deluxe clones live I use 1 212 cab with 2 swamp thangs and 1 with 2 Eminence EM12 200 watt speakers. I will put this up against any Marshall 100 watt head cab arrangement. I built the 2 amps P2P, 24 watt, Cathode biased and Dual Volume Tone knobs. I will try these cabs with my DRRI this weekend. I dont like the speakers to breakup, I like the power tubes to do most if the breakup and be able to drive the preamp enough also. I use 12AY7 in V1 and 5751 V2 on my clones. Really, if you look at Vintage Fender P2P amps most of them used 12AY7s V1. Its a sweet tuve with the right clean speakers.

    I enjoy experimenting as much as anyone,maybe more.I have 8 cabs, 4 are Mesa 2x12 which I mix n match speakers. Tried most all of them. Yes of course you can hear and feel the difference but tbo with a eq and a od pedal you can makes them all sound alike. On my Fender Deluxe I run through a 2x12 with celestion golds. No breakup at all unless really cranked. Take your pick of any of the 4 million od pedals and you can make it sound like you want. With the combos, a few od pedals and a mxr 10 band eq and I can replicate 99.9% of any speaker combo you come up with.Bass/treble/mids/volume/gain/breakup for $100.

      I found a nice list of speaker choices on google in a fender forum. Amp guru maybe? I've been an Eminence fan since I used to run a 4x12 Krankenstein with Texas Heats in it. Amazing cab.

      I'm deciding between a Swamp Thang and a Texas Heat to put into a Blues Jr. I play mainly a Fender Telecaster in a classic rock cover band (ranging from the poppy brightness of the Beatles and Tom Petty to the harder rock of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC).
      I'd like to fill out the low and low-mids, maintain the sparkling highs, while also having enough high-mids to cut through the band mix.
      I was wondering your opinion as to which speaker is better suited to that, as you obviously have a Swamp Thang and I see in your comments that you've used Texas Heats previously too.

      I noticed that the Celestion is bright. its a bit like a bright cannabis rex when broken in. Fender amps tend to be bright sounding, '68 deluxe. I like the tight low end and clarity of the swamp thang, but with that high end ill pass. Hell try a celestion if you play classic rock

  • @mikeaustin4138
    @mikeaustin4138 8 років тому +2

    Seems like the Rex is brighter than the Swamp Thang. Seeing as the former is rated at 50 watts and the latter at 150 watts, it's not surprising that the Rex breaks up more readily.

    • @stephenatgraceland

      I also question whether you can compare break up on two speakers with very different wattages. I think “best speaker” depends a lot on what a person likes in guitar tone. I am moving towards liking a less bright sound. I also wonder if Fenders are better for clean and semi clean, and other amps better for more distorted tones. YMMV...

      What did you decide and how did it work out? I’m in exactly the same situation.
      I don’t like the sound I’m getting from my Blues Jr so I’m considering ordering a new speaker from Sweetwater.
      Right now I’m considering either the Eminence Swamp Thang or their Texas Heat speaker. Anyone have experience with either of these or another recommendation?
      The stock speaker is too shrill for my taste, especially when the volume is cranked. I like a chunkier low end…strong bass response, but not muddy or fuzzy.
      I want something that sounds bright but not shrill on the Beatles’ All My Loving, but gives me a strong bottom (bassy but not muddy) on Roadhouse Blues.

      The Swamp Thang is pretty beefy. Of those three it would still be my choice. I don't know why you'd put a British voiced speaker in an American voiced amp, and these Fenders are already so scooped anyway to get that glassy sound.

    The amp is designed to break up at around 5 no matter what speaker you put in it. If you want cleaner you can try lower gain preamp tube in V1 and V2 will give a little more clean head room with the swamp thing 150 watt power rating your not pushing the speaker because of the power handling.
    By design the preamp section in the amp will start distorting at a certain level of input no matter what ,another way to lower the input signal is to change out lower gain preamp tube or you can try input #2
    Depending how loud you need to be, so that being said there several combinations to try to get the most clean headroon out of that amp at a certain volume , if you need real loud and clean get another amp like a twin.
    There is tonal difference in the speakers but that only part of it depends on what your trying to do.
    If you want clean at volume on 10 is not going to work on this 22 watt amp .the swamp thing can handle a lot of clean power before it starts to break up .
    I have every combination of preamp tubes ,bias adjustment, speaker swaps on a fender deluxe and in the end you only gain a little clean headroom and spend a fortune..but if the right combination is right for what you want leave it alone..
    I have been playing tube amps for 50 years and soaked a lot on money trying to get that tone ,but gone stock at the lower volumes and settled on jensen for the clean fenderish
    tones.
    Want loud and clean get you a twin.. nobody says to have to turn it all the way up but if you need 30 to 40 watts of crystal clean that's the amp to use for loud cleans.

    Excellent demo. Many thanks.
    I'm still torn between the two. Don't like how the C12K breaks up in my DRRI.
    Btw. I am mainly a Strat/Tele guy, but also a fan of SD Jazz, have it in my C1 Classic.
    As for the speakers, to my ears, CR comes as more nuanced at lower volumes and seems better for recording. ST is just so big, clear, punchy and has wonderful sustain.
    Which of the two is more present, responsive and touch sensitive from your experience?

    • @guitarfreak585
      @guitarfreak585  7 років тому

      Nemanja Savic the swamp thang was all around better for my tastes. It just had so much punch, and the top was still really crisp. The DRRI just breaks up so early, and so does the Crex. Maybe a 75 or 80 watt speaker would be a good balance if you like that speaker breakup sound. I had someone recommend a Celestion Creamback for that application, but I never tried it myself.

      Man I know a guy that loves the crex in his blues junior. I've gigged that amp before too and it was nice. But yes, it does break up a lot earlier. The swamp thang should not break up at all in any small combo. But I'm not sure which would be better in a blues junior.

    • @GASMan-57
      @GASMan-57 8 років тому +1

      I'd be curious to know which you end up going with. I have a NOS Blues J with a Jensen C12N in it (which I don't like because it sounds too shallow with little bottom end) so I bought a Swamp Thang but haven't installed it yet. Soon after I also bought a Cannabis Rex to go into an Epi Electar Century RI amp, but it's basket wouldn't fit that amp, so now I have a choice. For my Tweed BJ I'm thinking the CR might be the better choice since the BJ is indeed well voiced for a bluesy tone so the smokier tone of the CR might be a better fit. For a more traditional Black Face Fender tone (versus Tweed tone) I'm thinking the ST might provide the extra versatility with its increased headroom for clean tones. But OTOH, the BJ does need that thump so maybe it does need the extra bass of the ST. I realize most folks would just think I should try both, but I've got more thangs to do than time or energy.

      Ben Lubin yeah some of it is camera distortion. The first clip the speakers are are totally clean, then after that the amp is breaking up. But yeah that real high end distortion is the camera. I never expected to get this many views on it. Now I have the equipment to make a good demo, but I don't have the other speaker anymore lol.

      Simple recording material but maybe the best HP and fender Amp demo on the tube 👍

      The bass rattled the camera and made for a killer OD nearing fuzz stage which does defeat the purpose, but ends up sounding pretty bad ass.
      This is how discoveries are made. Testing something, accident occurs, next thing you know Peter Parker is climbing the walls.
      Just need to figure out the circut, stuff it in a box and sell it.
      👍🍺
