Again. This is on day one out of the box. The speaker has now had a full year to break and and sounds outstanding. Much better than on day one of course. Perhaps some day I'll get around to posting what the C. Rex sounds like now that it is broken in.
i have owned several eminence speakers, and i always find there is a huge break in period.. its a sudden shift from papery to smooth, takes about 20 hours of really driving it, then they sound amazing
Cab design will greatly affect the tone of speakers. I have a Celestion Rocket 50 in a custom-made, compact, closed-back 112 cab. The cab is cube shaped (14.5 x 14.5 x 14.5), it's front-ported, and filled with acoustic insulation. It doesn't sound bright or thin at all. It's full & warm. But in an open-back cab with no insulation, it will sound like a completely different speaker.
Really good test and thanks for posting. Frankly I was disappointed in the Cannabis Rex as it seemed to have little top end sparkle and upper mids until the last clip. Apparently they do take some breaking in (30+ hrs allegedly) so that may change things but I have heard reports that they darken as they age so I question if they'd cut in a live situation ?. Be cool to hear it broken in and with some tone knob changes as this (was ?) on my shopping for my C30. Again, thanks for posting.
The reason the r50 sounds better in this is because the volume (sensitivity) of the c-Rex is much higher (hehe, punny), and it is causing the mic to clip.. That's mic distortion that you are hearing..
Thanks for the efforts. Shame the new speaker was peaking as it's hard to hear it properly. I'd be keen to hear a recording of the new one after it's broken in if you're able to? Cheers
@ Ramos it's hard to really get a detailed overview of this speaker with a bunch of nirvana shit cords screaming through it. I've got one in a closed back 1x12 cab and it sounds good. I would say it depends on the applications and what amp your running it with.
I'm sorry to say, But to my ears that Rocket 50 sounds way better than the canabis rex. I think the Eminence is to full, I like the rocket's thin sound on the clean. Just my opinion though.
no the most ice picky sounding speaker out there is the Jensen C12N with OD and a Tele, man I've had it for 24hours and my ears are bleeding, I've just replaced it for a Canabis Rex
I say keep both and use them for specific sounds. I've become the fastest speaker swapper in the world! LOL. I have at least 12 different guitar speakers all with different sounds. Speakers change your sound more than the amp... IMHO.
The C. Rex sounds much better to me, a fuller rounder tone. More lower mides, but I think the clarity is definitely superior. Slightly glassy at the high end, but that should settle down as the speaker breaks in.
Had it been me I would have bought something with more lows and more subdued mids than the V30. Then there are just so many different speakers to choose from and as we all have our preferences in tone it's hard to give any sound advice
Cannabis Rex is far less professional sounding . You could adjust the tonality and saved the money. Broke in or not, I don’t think human ears are that qualified and sensitive enough to discern the difference. But comes down to if your happy with it, my opinion is for not.

I like to mix speakers in cabs for additional depth. Eminence Rocket 50 with a Celestion Greenback sounds sweet.

"smoky smooth tone" What you did there, I fucking see it.

Eminence is the best speaker made. Period.
Those thinking the C-Rex was too dark @2:35 - treble is at 3 o'clock! I think if EQ properly it would be the clear winner with this amp
Thanks for this man. New speaker definitely sounds better. I don't know whether to buy a V30 for my HT20 or to sell it and buy another amp.

thanks for making this, I saw these in MF mag and wondered if anyone had made a video on them.

i dug the rocket much better, may it is because you picked the wrong speaker line for a marshall voiced amp?
The V30 is out of my price range, but I've heard it sounds divine.

The Rocket 50 sounds hundreds of times better.
I like the Rocket a lot more in these amps

Nice comparison, imo Eminence always sounds better than Celestion. Smoother and more balanced tone.

Legend 128
although the Rocket 50 is the bottom of the line though, and the CRex adds more body and dimension...
the rex speaker sound far less superior and crackles compared to the rocket 50
The cannabis rex has a higher sensitivity and is clipping the mic...
take the V30
keep an eye on kijiji or ebay, snagged a v30 off kijiji for $75 and one off ebay for $50 lol
if the rex weighs more than an ounce thats felony in georgia. lol
Turkey trail honey bee farm Georgia lol it's litteraly made from cannabis so this is sad but true
strange you would compare the cheapest Celestion with a higher level eminence but I guess it's what you had

the rocket 50 is total garbage the brightest damn sterile ice-pick speaker ever lol
