I bought a used 6D in like 2016 as a second camera to my 5Diii and ended up liking the 6D so much that I sold my 5Diii and bought two more 6D’s (filming haircuts I needed multiple angles). Years later after “upgrading” through canon’s early RF offerings and feeling let down in many ways (less intuitive ergonomics and button layouts, cumbersome auto focus navigation, and seeing the world through an EVF meant I could only perceive what the sensor could) I decided to find another 6D- and it is glorious. I didn’t even notice that canon had lost their legendary colors until after I went back to the 6D- my R6 shifts toward magenta in areas where the 6D shifts toward teal, and the “defects” in terms of dynamic range and noise actually have a really nice aesthetic. Now I grab my R6 when I have to get a photo but I grab my 6D when I want to get a photo.

Thanks for this Andrew, interesting post that, i thought I could see a colour shift in the R6 photos I had seen, im sure its a good workhorse camera though. 6d is special.

Those are exactly my findings as well although to be fair I started to see colors go downhill with the 5D4. After that it feels that Canon has been on a trial-and-error approach with the R models in terms of color rendition/sensor spectral response. I too have the R6 (and R8). Sure, as tools they are super easy to work with but the files don't make you smile anymore. Too cold and clinical rendering. Give us the old look back Canon! The look you once were famous for.
This video inspired me so I got myself a 6D again (I used to have one back in 2014) and only now when shooting with it (and as you mentioned, compare it with modern Canons) I realize I have been missing it...A LOT! Love it! Found one in mint condition with just 12 000 clicks and I plan to use it until it falls apart.

@@henrycartier I had been short term owning 6D’s because they were cheap and dependable, but the specs on paper are underwhelming so it’s easy to underrate them. Just a few weeks ago I finally bought a forever 6D, one that I plan to own until it crumbles. I’ve recently posted a video about my thoughts on it if you’re into nerding out on camera opinion videos 😁

I agree 100%! The Canon 6D v1 and one of the BEST cameras Canon has ever made. I have used it for many years professionally, put over 158k on the shutter and its still blazing. EXCELLENT image quality. Its not full of features but images are what its all about. The low light ISO performance is crazy. I have used it plenty of times for sports, especially night sports for the ISO performance.

My 6D is an absolute joy to use. I have had mine for 6 years and it's like my 3rd eye when I'm out using it. Use it for landscapes, portraits, and have also shot a couple of weddings with it. It has never put a foot wrong. Absolute workhorse!!

@Slurpee I have always believed this but 6d original is one of the greatest cameras ever built. I believed this because when the 6dii launched and they were compared, I could instantly tell the differences in the pictures. I knew which one was the og 6d. That's when I knew it was impressive.

Better late than never to comment. I still use my 6D and remains, to this day, my favourite camera to take for travel and event photography. The key hallmarks of the 6D is how simply and close-to-the-metal it is. The focusing system in no BS and simple. I don't need to dig into the menus to make the dang thing work. My focus is on composition and the exposure triangle. no on fancy AF modes to deal with. I'm seeing 6D's everywhere on marketplace and gumtree; if it breaks or stops working, I can easily get it replaced. I've not been not kind on my Canon 6D and it still refuses to die. I also own a 5D mark IV, and I still find myself grabbing this camera over my 5D-IV. Hell it takes better pictures with a 40mm pancake than the way over priced X110V from Fuji (Yeah I own that too).

  • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt

"I don't wanna be moving the focus points like I'm playing Pacman" BRILLIANT! I agree 100% and LOVE this camera, even with the weak points that I can easily work around. It continues to be my workhorse for reference gathering photoshoots (especially for those around a campfire during blue light hour), and painting captures... man, that sensor! Well done, you've earned a new subscriber Martin, thanks for the clarity in a "It's new, so I gotta have it, even if the new features don't matter to me" world.

I agree with the focus points, I usually need one in the middle and recompose, that's far better than some erratic eye focus on newer cameras and it makes me feel in control instead of being a victim of technology.

Long exposure/ light painting, all sorts..

I've been keeping a close eye on newer cameras from different brands.
The R6 tempted me. But it's lacking a couple of things I'd like.

I watched a few of your 6D videos and ended up getting one. I started filming and taking photos of local fast food places and I have a 77D which I used for both video and photos. However, it was annoying taking it out of the cage I used when filming. Getting a 6D in 2023, almost 2024 for commercial work so to say is crazy. But this camera achieves absolutely everything in terms of taking nice photos. Really really pleased with the results for $300AUD.

I just did a portrait session tonight with the 6D. I also shot an annual, night-time, Christmas market with no flash and running max ISO. I can clean up the images in post to be quite usable. I do appreciate several aspects of my 80D. However, the 6D still rocks in so many ways. I traded off my Sony A7RII because I realized that I was not going to be shooting and printing wall-sized prints. AND, battery life sucked. I can take the 6D out, shoot a few hundred shots, set it on the shelf, grab it and go shoot something else, do that several times before I need to charge the battery. It's just a great, easy-to-use workhorse.

After watching your video I was contemplating about getting one but the current price around 400 for a good one made the decision harder. The other day I found one for 250 in good shape and pulled the trigger. On its arrival I found out that it not only looks great but the shuttercount was only 20.000. I used it now for 2 weeks, getting used to it. I don't regret the purchase, love the colors and the rendering. I am really amazed on how easy it is to work the raw files. Low light performance is just excellent. First thing i did was to micro-adjust the 6D for all my EF L lenses. The autofocus is great, maybe 3-4 out of 100 out of focus, the rest is spot on. What a great camera for the price ! I still use my EOS R in situations where it is convenient to have all the features it has.

Yeah, love your videos about older DSLR. I´m using a 6D since years for family and stills. Bought used and now about 120.000 shoots + videos. Very study camera, small and lightweight with a lot of picture quality. The 6D haven´t much features, but the basics are nearly perfect. Center point AF ist strong, handles also difficult situations like shooting thru sunglasses with sun in the back of the model. The outer AF works fine, also for nailing eyebrows. With magiclantern also near to feature list of modern cameras, also as a nice video camera (with manuell focus peaking). Users have to learn good working scenarios for the AF, sometimes it´s hunting a lot. That´s the main point against modern mirrorless.

This video was what put me over on deciding to pull the trigger on a 6d. I am just into portait and stills, and I noticed that what is being marketed is
    1) Megapix that literally outperform human eye limits, and are only useful if you want to blow up the frame to the size of a cargo vessel.
    2) stuff for vlogging.
I do neither. I realized when I started studying Pete Souza's work, that he was using pretty "pedestrian" setups that were really pretty much middle of the road. Not the latest and coolest.
So when I heard you say all this, and the post you put up is pretty legit, I knew 6d was going to be my camera.

I had a Canon EOS R and Sony a7iii before, didn't really like them (mainly the Sony) and got the XT3. I think a FF Canon camera will be beautiful and fun, and I have nothing against older bodies. ✨

My only wish with modern auto focus cameras is if that manufactures could include a decent focusing screen with split prism and the circular micro prism or similar to aid manual focusing. I realise this may be awkward with the focusing sensors as well, but I find manual focusing so much harder than when I had an OM1 years ago.

Great vid. I've had a 6D since the beginning of the pandemic and even buying a Fujifilm X-T20 a year or so later, didn't detracted me from loving this SLR. So much so that I ended up selling up the mirrorless camera 6 moths later, as I concluded that, unlike Canon SLRs' interface, its sheer number of buttons, coupled with its small size, were literally getting in the way, as I kept pressing most of them by mistake while shooting. So getting back to an olde SLR's slick design was what I'd been actually missing.
Back to the video itself, these are just my two cents, but I honestly think the background music is a tad too loud - specially for people whose first language is not English, as it is my case.
Even more so when you consider that, for this kind of 'podcast video' - where what's being said matters more than what's being shown - so, doing something else while listening to them is usually the case (at least for me), subtitles won't make much of a difference.

If I decided to get a wild hair, and purchase a 5D classic or 6D mark 1, I saw a video for lenses on a budget, and that's great. I was just curious if you would do a review of some of your favorite lenses (any brand or all brands) and why you liked them - Yes, you did do one on the 50 mm. What do you think? Martin, question: in regards to portraits using a dslr shooting wide open, let’s say 1.8. how do u address eyes coming out soft when you focus and recompose and the edge of lens lands on the eye area ? is it the limitation of lens and you just have to stop down more ? Hi, Its a limitation of the focus system really, try to limit the amount of focus and recompose and potentially crop a bit in post to compensate but more importantly for me i simply use the picture anyway if its a good shot, i dont worry too much about the focus unless its miles off. Also, some lenses just work better than others in general, ultimately there is only so much you can do.
