      I've watched a number of your videos! You make great content. I've been riding motorcycles since I was 5. I took a 10 year break from my mid 20s to mid 30s. I'm 42 now. With more practice I'm sure I'd get better at changing tires, but when I look at what I make per hour, or could make doing a side hustle, future tires changes probably just aren't worth the time since I'm slow with mechanical stuff. I get the job done but it takes me a long time. My dad is 10x the mechanic I'll ever be. I'm glad I had the experience though, now I know it's money well spent when I have a professional do it.

    I agree with you about it being good in stock form. I have a 2022 500 and there has never been been a moment where I was like "you know, I wish this thing was faster". It'll lift the front wheel in 1st to 3rd gear with just a twist of the throttle and do well over highway speed with plenty of passing power in 5th and 6th. I cant see myself ever messing with it.

    1:08 I'm with you on "never changing tires" (at home). There's a big risk of puncturing a tube when doing them at home whether using a stand or just tires irons. The D606 is a very stiff tire too. I have ZERO desire to fight that battle, so I'm OK with paying a shop to change my tires with their fancy machine.

    3:20 - HOLY CRAP, that cost is highway robbery. When I have a shop do my tires, I pull the wheel off the bike and take it to them. One place charges $35.00 per tire - it's a small independent accessory / service store. My KTM dealer wants $40.00 per tire, which is up from $35.00 back in 2020.

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail  6 місяців тому

      I talked to my KTM dealer and a small independent all-terrain tire shop. Price was the same at both. For just a regular tire change it's only about $30, but to do heavy duty tubes, rim lock, and balance them the price went way up.

    • @DualSportDoug
      @DualSportDoug 6 місяців тому +1

      @@chasingtrail HD tubes are a must. They make the task a tad more difficult. Rim locks and balancing go hand-in-hand, so that explains the high price.

    GOOD CHOICE on the D606 / Mt21 combo. I've been running that combo on my DRZ since 2007. It still seems to be the gold standard tire combo in the DRZ crowd for people that mainly ride off pavement but also need a DOT tire. Prior to 2007, my DRZ had MT21 front and rear when I bought it used in 2006. Prior to that I had two DR350SEs. I ran MT21 front and rear on those two bikes dating back to 1996 or so.
    After the MT21 rear wore out on my DRZ, I switched to the D606 because I was seeing how they lasted longer and were more durable compared to the MT21 rear when I looked at them on everyone's DRZ in my circle of riding friends. There were about 8 of us with DRZs back in 2006/2007.
    I decided to switch to the Tusk DSport rear back in 2020 because it's half the price of the D606. I put the DSport rear and MT21 front on my KTM 450 EXC-F Six Days in 2020. I think the D606 is more durable after seeing minor issues on the DSport after 400 miles of riding around Silverton, Colorado that summer.
    I am still running the MT21 front on my DRZ and will be on my second DSport rear this season.
    The ONLY reason to switch to a DSport rear is if someone doesn't want to spend $120+ that the D606 costs.
    NEVER go to a D606 or DSport front. They will make you kiss the dirt eventually. The MT21 is better than either of those two on the front, for the type of riding you do.

    Your candid reactions are refreshing. Given how tired you, likely, were by 1 AM, I'll bet that the job wouldn't seem nearly as bad the next time, especially, if you started, say, on a weekend morning. What if you had to repair a tire out on the trail? If you'd done it a few times, I suspect that the experience would be a lot less stressful and tiring.
    I got a WR250F for the same reason: a lightweight, dual sport. Your riding (skills) seems just fine - perfectly suitable for enjoying the sights ... and getting home in one piece!
    Mine seems treacherous to get off it, too (despite a 35" inseam); so, I was reluctant to add saddlebags to get in the way. Fender and handlebar bags get tools off my back.

    How cold were the tires when you fought to put them on? :)
    Get the tires warm first. A hot sunny day works best. Otherwise, bring them into the house first for a day and at least overnight so they can be soft and would be much easier to take off and on. The good news is that when you get a flat, even on a cold day, is that the tires get warm, especially if you let them run a bit soft, and so on trail road repairs can be fixed quickly with practice. But cold tires are a nightmare for anyone without hydraulics.

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail  6 місяців тому

      I did leave the tires in the house but that only had them at about 68 degrees. It's been in the 40s here this week. A buddy suggested I put them in my truck with the heater on for 30 minutes, that probably would've helped.

    You’re going to have to do a change on the side of a trail sooner or later so it’s a good skill to have. Best to do it with the tools you take with you though. Might have been a 10 hour job lol. I’ve used MT21/D606 forever on my WR. Not sure about my 500 though. I’m still on the stock metzeler 6 days extreme. Maybe motoz enduro IT next. Summer here so I’ll be burning through tyres.

      I barely managed the change in my garage with proper tools and a tire changing stand. There's no way I'm doing that on a trail. I carry some huge zip ties that will let limp out when a flat eventually happens. If I traveled overnight or to really remote areas I'd have to prepare for that, but I'm confident my giant zip ties will let me limp out. Too much BS to carry for my day rides. Mine came with TKC 80s stock. They were great on the street but no so good in the dirt.

      @chasingtrail  Місяць тому +1

      Other than my first tank I never ran it low enough again to test that. I think you can expect 90 - 100 miles per tank in stock form. The bigger issue is the fuel pump location. I really don't care for the new design. It is not intended for dual sport use. Off-road, it's not really a problem, but if you're riding on smoother stuff that last 1/4 or so of the tank becomes useless.

    You had a crf300l rally, how do you compare it to your ktm in your experience? Thanks!

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail  3 місяці тому +2

      The CRF300L is an entry level, budget dual sport. The power feels like a scooter. It's a good bike for a beginner, or someone who just wants something basic and reliable that won't break the bank. The KTM is a full blown dirt bike that is street legal. I like the European dual sports for one main reason, and that is weight. The lighter the bike, the better off-road, imo. For my limited skill level, the CRF300L would be enough in all honesty. I got the KTM because I can, and because of the light weight. Picking up the CRF300L Rally even a couple times, wore me out fast. In my experience, you don't typically drop a bike in a convenient location. You drop it on a hill, off-camber, where you don't have a lot of traction for your boots or good leverage to lift it. In those situations, having a light bike is really beneficial, especially if you are riding solo.

      @@chasingtrail thanks for your thorough response.
      On crf300l did you lack power on pavement or on dirt? Or maybe both?
      They say rally is much more comfortable and less viby on pavement, but I guess it only matters if you do a lot of pavement and less focused on dirt riding.
      I don’t think I am looking to do much if any technical stuff, but would like to have an easy light bike to take on gravel roads, logging trails and enjoy some pavement as well.
      So hard to make a decision without being able to do a test ride!
