  • I decided to install LED lights on our home that we could enjoy year round - This may turn into one of those crazy "sync to music" homes eventually, but initially I'm just doing the roofline and the peaks of our home.
    What I found though is the learning curve for this project is VERY involved! There are so many things to know and a lot of trial and error and "buying things hoping they'll work"
    So - I'm doing a series of videos to share what I have learned to help you do similar projects without all the pain and suffering I've been going through!
    Links to the pieces I'm using in my set up are below. This is not a paid endorsement, the opinions in this video are my own - please do your own research.

      The 2nd part - “planning” is up. I will have a 3rd part showing the physical install soon.. whole family got the flu which is slowing me down a bit (tis the season). I’ll also do a separate video on programming the controllers and a few on the software.
      More is coming! I promise! 😁

    I was wondering why my lights weren't all lighting up. I'm going to try running the common ground jumper and see if that helps! Great video. I'm doing this hopefully before Christmas!

      Hi Jason - do they seem to just turn off at a certain light? It’s possible your preferences need to be adjusted. By default the WLED software is set for 100 lights (300 physical if you are using WS2811 12v light strips) - after that they won’t receive the on signal unless you modify the LED preferences to specify a longer run

      Doing the actual install this weekend and will be documenting the whole process. Dr ZZs has a bunch of really in-depth videos that you should check out about this as well.

    OK. First question. Are there 12v string lights that have the lights farther apart than 3-4 inches? Second question. Will RGB make a regular white light? I'm thinking a lot of the time, I would only want the area near the garage and front door under a white/regular light for security and entrance purposes.

      Yes.. I feel like I’ve seen ads on Facebook recently for a set of RGB lights that were spaced at about 6-8 inches.. they were little square things with a lens connected by a wire.. but the name escapes me.
      And yes to your other question - if all three (RGB) are lit the appearance is white

      Thank you very much. Today I will make a sketch and begin to measure only the front of the haus. I want to see how this goes before I get in over my head. @@AskDIYDad

      Nice! Why do chicken coops have 2 doors?
      .. if they had 4 you’d have to call them Chicken Sedans

    Can you trim the WS2811 strips to a custom length? Obviously this would require a reprogram to the controller to account for the proper length.

    • @AskDIYDad
      @AskDIYDad  Рік тому

      Yes and yes. You can shorten and extend. Trim points are visible on the strip via exposed copper lines. On the ws2811 that’s every three led chips (which is one virtual bulb in the software)

    I have everything hooked up and the lights running a test. I have an issue with my lights not showing the proper colors. Red is green and green is red. Any idea what might be causing this?

    • @AskDIYDad
      @AskDIYDad  Рік тому +1

      Yes! Go into the LED preferences on your WLED app. There is a drop list near the top for color order with several options. Most common are RGB or BRG (mine are BRG). Change and save this setting and retest. A minute of experimenting and you should find the right setting
