True story . . . Exile did a concert at a festival at a venue on the Ohio River and we got there on our 60' houseboat. The chairman of the festival was a friend and he asked us if we would take the band for a ride on our boat. I told him we would if the band sang this song to me while we were riding on the river. I was joking but they did sing it to me. My very own private concert!! They were a group of very nice guys and sure gave me a good memory!!
@amypace1027 I'm a Cleveland gal that grew up off lake erie and the last 8 years down here by cincy. I do miss that lake that's for sure but my son needed me down here. So that came first
This was considered Rock and Roll when it came out. Then it crossed over to the Country charts. Exile went on to become Country singers. They had several really good songs and some that were mediocre. I was a teenager when this song came out. I am a Great-grandmother now and I still love listening to this song.
The Midnight special was awesome! Allof us that were teens then watched it. You made it home for curfew then watched the midnight special! Everybody that was anybody was on there. It was great! The 70s were the best!!!!!!✌️❤️
My boss grew up in Kentucky where Exile is from. . She said they sure had the groupies and I believe it. Shew this song is power and love. The lead singer wld quit after all this and pass away in a Kentucky back in early 80s of organ failure. They had a fundraiser for him too . He became a recluse after Exile...depression took over. He lived with his mom until he died. Very sad. Such talent gone so soon. He was post once he gave up music they said. But man' he could sing and he held the stage. You can't stop watching him and his long hair and moves. ❤ Exile still song today.
I've been listening to Exile since I was a kid. I'm 47 and I've only ever heard them on country stations. A few years ago I realized that they're a rock band that was played on country radio but this song is straight up disco!!
Black Pegasus, to really enjoy this you need to listen to this alone in the dark with your eyes closed, laid back in the comfiest chair & thinking about your special lady. Its such a smooth & sexy timeless song.
This song is, and will always be, FIRE!! The lead singer, Jimmy Stokely, wore that outfit like a rock star!! He had such an amazing voice. These guys sounded Awesome. RIP Jimmy.
Exile came out of nowhere with this song in 1978 and it went straight to number ONE on Billboard’s Hot 100. Then they pretty much disappeared again. I thought they were a “Top 40” mainstream soft rock and pop band, but after failing continued success following “Kiss You All Over”, they transitioned to a COUNTRY BAND. 🙄 In 1983 they released their first Country album, Exile. Between 1983 and 1987, Exile had ten number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, as well as a number-one country album with Kentucky Hearts in 1984.
That song puts me in mind of another incredible song and singer by the name of Benny Mardones. His song "Into the Night" is one of the greatest vocal performances ever, a lot of people would agree, and he sang it the same live as the recording. The song topped the charts 2 different times and Benny was older by the time it hit the 2nd time.. it's a long story, but due to weird and innocent circumstances, the video is controversial, not Benny's fault, he didn't choose to be in it. I expect money was tight. But if you react to the audio track or even a live version, you'll hear an INCREDIBLE one-of-a-kind voice with a range and grit and passion that I don't think anyone else has equaled. The story behind the song is good but many people mistake the meaning or something. Mostly because Benny was older when they made him be in the video. I'll hush now, but it's a fantastic song by a fantastic singer. R.I.P. Benny Mardones.
The lead singer Jimmy Stokely looks so much like Tesla's lead singer Jeff Keith...WOW! This song was played at our high school dances along with Bad Company's Feel Like Making Love and The Raspberries Go All The Way. Yes, being a teenager in the 70s was a lot different than today!
The 70's had the best "baby-making music." Which is really ironic because "zero population" was a big thing back then and is why Gen X is so small and overlooked. 🤘Rock on, Kelly 🤘
A few years ago, I had a chance to sit and talk with these guys. I asked the guitarist/co-lead vocalist, "JP" (short hair with a beard) where the name Exile came from. He said that around the time they formed the band, there was a huge influx of exiles from Cuba that dominated the news at that time. Also, they wrote a few songs for Alabama that became some of their biggest hits.
Exile is amazing. They started as a rock ‘n’ roll band in the 70s I believe, and they moved to country. This is my favorite song by them, but I really like them all.
The crazy thing is that these guys still tour today. Mostly in tact. The owner of a local venue knows them and they play 2 to 3 shows for him every year. Still as good as they ever were.
This band started out in Central Kentucky. Most if not all members were from a town south of Lexington called Richmond. Eastern Kentucky University is located there and they played the "college bars" before they hit it big. I remember them opening for one of the "bigger" bands at Rupp Arena, way back in the 70s.
The 70's was a great era, I was a young adult, woodstock type concerts in the woods. Free love, flower power, leather fringe jackets. Wonderful time in my life. Talk about the great music of the time period too. So memorable
Ambrosia's song How Much I Feel is a great song! Another favorite of mine is Thunder Island by Jay Ferguson (might have been his only song?), very nostalgic!
Exile is a great country group that I don't believe got the recognition they should have. They wrote a lot of songs for other artists. They wrote 2 songs for Alabama, The Closer You Get and Take Me Down.😊 They opened up for Alabama.
Exile has played for a festival in my hometown in Kentucky several times. Always a free show. They still sound amazing. One of my all favorites and still remember where I was when I first heard it.
The first time I saw Prince on TV (well before he became popular) he was wearing a leopard print jumpsuit like that. It was either The Midnight Special or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (both Saturday late night shows back in the 70s).
AWWWWW - My late husband used to "jokingly" - well sorta - sorta not - to me, just walkin' around the house!! MISS HIM, SO MUCH!!! GREAT that you reacted to this, tonight! MADE MY WEEK! :) THANKS, BP!!!
Yep, in the yacht rock genre. A great song…here’s some others or just put that in on UA-cam’s search and pick what’s viewed most… Firefall - Just Remember I Love You Dr Hook - Sharing the Night Together Orleans - Dance With Me & Still The One Player - Baby Come Back Jackson Brown - Somebody’s Baby The Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Jackie Blue Steely Dan - Reeling in the Years Little River Band - The Other Guy, Help Is On Its Way, Lonesome Loser & Lady (To me, they’re not the Eagles - no one is lol, but they have a lot of similarities). And probably one you haven’t heard yet from Steve Perry - Foolish Heart And trust me, you won’t go wrong with picking any of these or any off of a yacht rock list. My kids are becoming adults and listen to this stuff now too because I always have these along with a lot of rock and country in my playlist. Proud dad lol. Enjoy BP!
Ah, the memories. Remember, this was way before stereo tv. Midnight Special broadcast on what was called "simulcast". The wife and I would turn on the old reliable 19" Sony, turn down the volume, tune into the appropriate radio station, crank it up and listen in stereo. Sometimes I really miss the simpler, less complicated days.
Exile was primarily a Country band who crossed over to pop with this #1 smash in 1978. I don't know if they had much success on the pop chart after kids you all over
This was a big hit! I was a tween and lived with my granny and aunt and uncle, and my fun Aunt Petie and I danced to the 45 rpm record of this song and many others. But this one was a really big hit and I still have it as one of my ringtones I switch back & forth between. Exile later turned country and had some very good country hits! I bought the cassette tape of their hits back in the day, cause they're just a great band with good music! 💃🎸🎵🇺🇲
Even at 50- 60yrs old, this song still resonates
At 60+ years my mom would bop in the kitchen while listening to this. Now that she has passed and I've reached sixty it's my turn!
Great song

Oh lord I LOVED this song when it was first released!! 46 years later and I still love it just as much!!!
A “banger” in every sense of the word 😂😂 I loved this song! ❤️🔥❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻

Babies came from this song!!!
I came here to say the same thing 😂
Can you imagine if this song and the song "Lady" were done in the same concert?? LOL
I had my first daughter in '78, just saying
They just played them at our high school dances lol.
Maybe Millions?
The Midnight special was awesome! Allof us that were teens then watched it. You made it home for curfew then watched the midnight special! Everybody that was anybody was on there. It was great! The 70s were the best!!!!!!✌️❤️

That was me! After several "just 5 more minutes" pleads, then I was inside sitting in front of the TV to watch The Midnight Special..at midnight!
The one performance that stands out for me was Sanford Townsend Band Smoke from a Distant Fire. They nailed it.
Just as smooth as it was in the 70s. Still love it!!! Love that funky bassline
Always LOVEDthat song! 70’s baby here and grew up in the 80’s. 70’s music is the bomb.
Yep it was released in 1978 when I WAZ 18 LOL. NOW im all most 64 young ones lol
@@theodoreritola7641 I'll officially be an old lady (65) in November! This was a really big hit, on the radio a lot back then!

I grew up with this song. It was a hit in the seventies. 🎶👍🙋♀️
I forgot how epic thier drummer was. Clear, crisp with machine like precision...
I've been listening to Exile since I was a kid. I'm 47 and I've only ever heard them on country stations. A few years ago I realized that they're a rock band that was played on country radio but this song is straight up disco!!
Another good song from this era is "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body " by The Bellamy Brothers.
These 70's videos are gold.
Black Pegasus, to really enjoy this you need to listen to this alone in the dark with your eyes closed, laid back in the comfiest chair & thinking about your special lady. Its such a smooth & sexy timeless song.

This is one of my favorite songs from the 70's. It has a great vibe and the harmonies are stellar.
This is still a great song from my past.
Sometimes I tune in because of the song but the other times it's for BP's facial expressions, always makes me lol
One of my top 10 favorite songs of all time. And I’ve been around for a LONG time!
Exile came out of nowhere with this song in 1978 and it went straight to number ONE on Billboard’s Hot 100. Then they pretty much disappeared again. "Woke up in Love" and "I Don't Wanna be a Memory" are 2 of their awesome country hits from their later era!
The lead singer Jimmy Stokely looks so much like Tesla's lead singer Jeff Keith...WOW!

Exile is actually a band from Kentucky.
I wish I knew how many quarters I put in the jukebox at the bowling alley way back in the day playing this song!!! LOVED IT!
How music was in the 70s. 80s,,, songs Soo different from now,,,,,,

I graduated in 2002. Back then they came and performed here in my town locally and I went and saw them in High School. So it was EARLY 2000’s!!!
Yeah, I love the crescendo moment where they loudly sing "Till the night closes in!!!" Awesome.

This song gives me goosebumps.
GREAT 70S getsum TUNE!! WAS GREAT TO LIVE ITS MAGIC BACK THEN
Takes me back to listening to this on the clock radio, static and all, back in the ‘70s. Reminds me of Ambrosia, How Much I Feel.
The 70s had some of the BEST 'babysitter' music of any era!
It’s a damn shame people only remember this hook. One of my top five favorite love lyrics!!❤
It is a damn good fucking hook though 😂
I LOVED this song when it came out and I still do.
This song sure brings back memories. Ones I wish I could go back to.
