What? It is easy to tell how much heat matters to the device... i.e., game will crash, frames will drop over extended playtime. iPhone 15 pro/pro max are top performers in terms of temps when put up against competing devices. I assume you decided to just make a blanket statement

yeah! now most games can actually sustain 29-30fps with very little drops while before it was hard to even reach solid 30 and crippling around 25-29. Thats actually the small bit making it "smooth" also the frametimes make the difference.
No they don’t. What does is to matching the refresh rate of the display with the fps. A 30 hz display will look smoother with 30 fps than a 60 hz display.
I feel like you’re underselling the improvement, those 4 to 5 fps do make a difference when close to 30fps. The best thing is that this is just the first beta, hopefully they keep Improving it 🙏🏻
About the last test, it's a VERY common misconception... List of apps in task switcher is NOT the list of "apps running in the background" - it's just a list of recently used apps. They might be in three states: - not running, and completely wiped out from memory - system decides which apps will be automatically closed - not running, but still in memory, available for fast switching - running, but that's ONLY the last one There're some exceptions and caveats*, but apps on iOS cannot just "run in the background". That would be irrational as well - how can you imagine running all those games at once? It's highly possible, that in that list, there's just one game + maybe few smaller apps are actually in memory. And another thing: "closing" all those apps in that "recent apps list" aka "task switcher" does... nothing, or makes things even worse sometimes (if you close app that you use often, it has to start again & again for every use, reading disk & using a lot of power) * apps can run in the background if they do some specific things: audio playback, navigation, downloading some things in the background, they are also activating for refreshing data for widgets, or to process push notifications
About Game Mode itself: you missed one crucial point: we get few extra frames (up to ~10% usually, which is more than I expected TBH!) but that's not important... As you see, from gameplay perspective that's not much of a difference. But it WILL make a difference for power use. If we cap FPS @ 30, if we had 30-31 before and now we have 33-35, we're saving power a bit by having frame render time shorter - CPU/GPU might "rest" for longer.

Apple still hates gaming as much as ever. These horrible iPhone ports are proof. The games can’t even be played with a touchscreen making the port to mobile completely pointless. They want the mobile experience with these games to be so bad that users will come to believe that AAA gaming on mobile should never be expected and Apple can keep milking whales with the billion match-3 and clash royale clones.
Didn't apple say it was to keep the performance stable when gaming for a longer period of time. That it wouldn't make the phone thermal throttle. Why didn't you test that?

M4 iPad Pro is a Series S (the weaker XBOX console) that thermal throttles after a few minutes and becomes even weaker. Still very good performance for a tablet.
Actually, it is not surprising since they are a port and Resident Evil 7 still has poor performance on Android emulated through Mobox/Winlator, which has no optimization for mobile (without texture cuts as you can see the version for iOS has). ) runs at 60fps so what the Abionic lacks is GPU power since the optimization is already there, which is its strong point, but in raw power they lose against the snapdragon
I recently got a switch bc of how Apple has been releasing AAA games on iOS (but also bc Lowkey my switch was only 10% of what my iPad Pro costed me), both are handhelds that are portable and mobile, they run very similar games now and the switch happens to just have a larger library atm for third party AAA games, both are great choices to game on in my books, Lowkey iPad feels better to play them on then the switch, but switch has the larger library of games to choose from, I have a vast amount of games in my collection all the way from Xbox down to my switch now. Edit: I’m a travel worker, so I love to game on anything remotely available to me at that time and to have the opportunity to play these AAA games on the road or on the go, is a convenient phenomenon for me, I have a total of forty plus premium games I’ve paid for on my iPad (still growing), and that’s not including the free games of choice on iOS. My switch library already has ten games now (no where near done, which I’m excited for) and I have chosen thirty five AAA FPS games for the switch I like, that I’ll be getting over this next year, with how the sales are on the eShop. I have a lot of other action, adventure, and third person shooters, that I have chosen as well in my wish list, but I’m waiting to be able to buy them on sale as well.
Watching this video it is a bit disappointing given the fps seen in certain games to be very well optimized ports, the RE7 is fine that it runs at 60fps at those same fps it goes on android through the "emulation" itself it is a translation of WINE/ DXVK as if it were used on Ubuntu but on Android, apart from that yes or yes to be able to play it on an iPhone it has to be from the 15pro or pro max with the A17PRO chip, while on Android you can play an AAA game (2015) from an 8GEN1 and emulated that needs more power, so where is the power that Apple boasts so much about its mobile processors?
What people seem to not understand that this will not replace you console, pc, etc. It’s added value to a device that you already have in your pocket that does 95% of your computing needs and adds the convenience of playing proper games on the go, compared to playing Candy Crush on the bus or train. And it’s just them pushing what can be done on a chip that uses 3 watts from a battery. They are not the first ones to do this but they are the only ones that can bring this to a larger scale. Nvidia did this with the tegra tablet and handheld consoles back in 2013 and you could exclusively play Tomb Raider 2013 and Portal. But it was so niche that it died instantly. For example the S24 ultra has a more powerful GPU but you don’t see them pushing titles like these to Android.
Mobile is a bigger platform that both console and pc combined, pc is worth 45 billion, console 40 billion while mobile is a 140 billion dollar gaming platform, thats 55 billion more than both pc and console combined and its actually projected to be at 170 billion in two years. apple gaming will be bigger than any console for sure. the chips are getting so good that a small screen will be fine for playing high end games at lower res than on a big screen. I assume major break throughs are coming in power and cooling. at some point we will just plug the phone into the big screen and it'll look great there too. in a few years they will be at playstation 5 level and beyond.

Well, the M4 is close to a PS5 even in performance.. and if you can also play PS5 games on it.. it's actually can replace your primary gaming device very soon.. you can connect the PS5 controller to iPad, mirror the screen to a TV, and a portable PS5 anywhere.. It definitely has to do with the device performance. When I was playing the Assassin’s Creed Mirage demo I was recording the screen, when I stopped recording and it started to saving it, the game crashed, it was an 8 minute screen recording.
Well, if game mode disable background tasks, I wonder how an iPhone 15 Pro on iOS 17 with all background tasks set to off would compare to iOS 18 in game mode
Game Mode is still in beta and games might have to be optimized to take advantage of this feature so hopefully we get better result later on however heat on iPhones will always affect performance. Hopefully iPhone 16 can perform way better.

If you could test some games with touch input as well, that'd be awesome. I still believe there's a bug in iOS since 16.0 that causes games to stutter on ProMotion devices upon touch. It's observed even in the lightest games such as Hill Climb(or Hill Climb+) and Hit the Island. I'd like to see if game mode makes any difference to that, in my experience it does not.
I'd be curious to understand the performance differences and behavior of the OS when you have background apps that are actually *doing work in the background* when game mode is on vs off, i.e.: Apple Maps / Google Waze actively managing an active navigation route, or say an audio call with Discord or just the Phone app.
120 FPS? No way, where are you seeing that? There is almost no difference between Quality and Performance with MetalFX on iPhone 15 Pro and RE Village. I've tested that extensively. You may as go with Quality mode as picture quality is considerably better. Performance uses Spatial upscaling and it's ugly.

If apple wants to take gaming seriously they need to invest into a good passive cooling system! I wish apple wasn’t so addicted to thinness for the sake of it! With the extra space the battery could be bigger and a vapor cooling system could fit! Right now apple just uses some thermal tape that’s not enough for extended play!!
Vapor cooling is not that good like you think.. first of all it's just extend the non throttling phase, but it will deffinitly throttle (not in the 2-3mins in the 8-10mins.. so it's only 6-7mins diff, after that the throttling/none throttling phases are the same..). And the second, and actually bigger problem with Vapor chamber, it's leading the heat to the battery area.. what is the most heat sensitive thing in your phone.. and the 50°C is actually the warnig zone for a battery (it's have different safe temp while discharging and charging.. so if you plug the charger when the battery already at 50°C, that heat it even more, and rapidly decrease your battery lifespan on that temp..)

True, but devices like ROG Ally or Steam Deck are additional devices. BUT - we may assume that everybody have smartphones in their pockets today (maybe not iPhone 15 Pro, but it’s nice proof of AAA gaming concept on smartphones).
Actually Nintendo switch is like iPhone 7 and still better games, better graphics. Why? Heat heat heat. iPhone smokes it in benchmark but games need something different than just GPU CPU spike to the moon. And another reason is Apple and greed when only pay to play or iAP games are on iOS.
Thanks for this comparisons, I was going to buy the Assessin’s Creed Mirage but after playing the demo for a while and watching your videos I decided it wasn’t worth it even though it was on discount. Heat dissapation will not boost fps. The chipset and memory bandwidth needs to be better

It's a beta and there already are tiny to small improvements. In my eyes, you should always plays these demanding AAA's with it enabled.
You should try this with competitive games like warzone, cod mobile, genshin, with 120fps you should notice more of a difference

Iphone is not a gaming device. Ipad is ok, but macs are good for gaming. Bring AC mirage on mac.
Macs aren't good for gaming. They lack the support. What makes them possibly good is that they have active cooling except for the Air

120 FPS? No way, where are you seeing that?
There is almost no difference between Quality and Performance with MetalFX on iPhone 15 Pro and RE Village. I've tested that extensively.
You may as go with Quality mode as picture quality is considerably better. Performance uses Spatial upscaling and it's ugly.

It’s funny because my iPhone 15 pro max never over heats and I played resident evil 4 remake is rest and I did the update I think it’s because everyone bought the phone when in first came out I just bought mine no issues

If apple wants to take gaming seriously they need to invest into a good passive cooling system! I wish apple wasn’t so addicted to thinness for the sake of it! With the extra space the battery could be bigger and a vapor cooling system could fit! Right now apple just uses some thermal tape that’s not enough for extended play!!
Vapor cooling is not that good like you think.. first of all it's just extend the non throttling phase, but it will deffinitly throttle (not in the 2-3mins in the 8-10mins.. so it's only 6-7mins diff, after that the throttling/none throttling phases are the same..). And the second, and actually bigger problem with Vapor chamber, it's leading the heat to the battery area.. what is the most heat sensitive thing in your phone.. and the 50°C is actually the warnig zone for a battery (it's have different safe temp while discharging and charging.. so if you plug the charger when the battery already at 50°C, that heat it even more, and rapidly decrease your battery lifespan on that temp..)

30fps gaming is fine. What you need is a stable frame rate and good frame pacing

True, but devices like ROG Ally or Steam Deck are additional devices. BUT - we may assume that everybody have smartphones in their pockets today (maybe not iPhone 15 Pro, but it’s nice proof of AAA gaming concept on smartphones).

The Nintendo switch is worse graphically than even the iPhone X. The iPhone 15 Pro absolutely smokes the switch in everyway from RAM to CPU and GPU
Actually Nintendo switch is like iPhone 7 and still better games, better graphics. Why? Heat heat heat. iPhone smokes it in benchmark but games need something different than just GPU CPU spike to the moon. And another reason is Apple and greed when only pay to play or iAP games are on iOS.
Thanks for this comparisons, I was going to buy the Assessin’s Creed Mirage but after playing the demo for a while and watching your videos I decided it wasn’t worth it even though it was on discount. Of course heat dissipation has a lot to do but I think developers aren’t doing enough to optimize the games. Can you do a test with the Razer phone cooler to see if that helps in any way?
I really think this is best tested once out of beta.
