I swear you are psychic or something lol cuz almost every time I search for a specific Sony camera video, you've already done like 5 different videos on it. Thanksssss
Ben, always great to hear from you and always nice to be called psychic rather than psychotic or psychopathic - definite adjective improvement;) Do let me know if you have ideas, themes or Qs you'd like me to cover in vids - always great to get suggestions. Cheers and have a great weekend:)
Nice stability review! I just took my a7iv to the beach for a handheld vlog and am really impressed! Standard did better than I was expecting but would still need Catalyst most of the time to make it smooth enough for me. I think I’m ready to go with Active a lot to cut catalyst out of my process :)
Great video. Thank you very much. For my style of vlogging, I would say Active wins almost always and if I REALLY want some stable footage for B-roll I would use a gimbal. I don`t know how to precise why exactly but I didn't really like the Catalyst stabilisation , specially for the amount of extra work needed. I'd rather balance my gimbal for better results I guess.
Hey Igor, that's a solid logic. For me it's more about travelling light - the gimbal is great once set up, but I like just taking the camera and then spending the few mins letting my Mac render catalyst - no right or wrong, just preference I reckon:) I am really pleased with how much better active is vs anything else Sony had before (bar the a7s3 and other more expensive recent models they released). Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great weekend:)
Thanks for this video. I just got my 7iv last week and am enjoying the experience. Your video is the best one I've seen on this topic. So good, I've subscribed and "liked." I do have a question. The lens I bought with my camera is the 24-105mm. It has the OSS on/off feature. Some people say to turn that off if I plan to use Browse and and others say it needs to be on as well as the in-body "active" or "standard." Any thoughts on this. In any case, thanks for the help I got from this video. Well done!
Hey, great comparison. But I struggle to understand something: I tested walking with a 3rd party lens without OSS in all 3 modes: SteadyShot OFF, SteadyShot ON, SteadyShot ACTIVE and all 3 video files have gyro-data written. Stabilizing them in Catalyst Prepare war possible for all 3 clips and I saw no difference. Why exactly do you say at 10:14 that there's no "backup"? Gyrodata is written for all 3 modes. So Catalyst seems to always be the backup. And why exactly do you recommend to NOT use Active + Catalyst?
Hello, thank you for this guide. Can you confirm which lenses allow the use of active steady shot and catalyst gyro? I am about to purchase the Sony A7IV and Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E for use in wedding videos and other uses. Will this combination allow for these stabilization techniques? Do ONLY Sony lenses allow these? Thank you for your help!
Hey Zahra, great question - as far as I know from all the lenses I've tested ALL lenses allow catalyst stabilisation so long as you turn off all other types of stabilisation when shooting. Active steadyshot works on all the lenses I've tested, but I don't have many with in lens stabilisation (OSS) so I'm not certain it will work with those, but I think it does. The Sigma 24-70 (very nice choice btw) should work great with both. Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you like the content and have a lovely weekend!
is the jittering at 11:11 on both active and catalyst shots normal? The vertical lines like the pipes and the buildings were jittering side to side for me on my big screen 🤔 I used to visit this area often :))
Thanks for the kind words Hop On:) Pretty much everything I do is 4k 24fps aside from slow motion, usually in S Cinetone (since I got the a7iv) or HLG picture profiles. Hope that helps, consider subbing if you like the content and have a great weekend!
I'm so happy you got a Sony A7 IV! So you can create the most helpful videos about this camera on UA-cam :) Just an amazing comparison, which features everything someone wanted. I need to say, compared to the ZV-E10, active steadyshot here is pretty amazing! I don't like Catalyst Browse, because you cannot batch export on the free version.
Really appreciate the kind words Armin:) Completely agree with your analysis to. I'd buy the upgraded Catalsyt if it was a one off cost as a fair price, but I hate software subscription models haha! Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day!
Hello, good information, although I speak very little English, that is why I wanted to ask you if using stabilized lenses such as the sigma 24 70 on the A7iv, would it be necessary to have the camera stabilizer activated using the gimbal? Thanks!!!
I noticed very little difference stabilizing Standard Steadyshot captured video and Steady shot off video in Catalyst Browse, do you recommend turning of SS if we are gonna stabilize in post?
Hey Jj, in my experiments so far I've seen limited downside from leaving standard on then using catalyst so that would be my default approach, but I think the strategy you mention could work well too. Best solution is to experiment and see which you like best:) Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day!
@@dbvares8745 I have a Sony A7iii and even along with the stabilized 24-105mm Sony lens the IBIS is horrible. I'm selling out of the Sony system now. Its too heavy and cumbersome to use.
David, I’ve watched several hours of your videos today and I feel like they’ve answered so many of my questions about the a7c and a7iv:) I have a question: does autofocus work when you pair Samyang’s 12mm f2 with the A7c (despite it being an APSC lens on a FF body) ? Thanks for the unique and comprehensive reviews!
Really appreciate the kind words Jeff! And yes, any crop lens with autofocus will have that autofocus work just fine with any recent Sony full frame body. Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day!
If I understood correctly, any stabilization should be turned off if you plan to use the catalyst? That would be a tough call to make before you shoot any video. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if active stabilization will be enough or not, so you’re taking a big risk here.
Hi! I really like all of your videos, and especially your unique humour xD It seems as if you are one of the few that use gyro stabilisation as part of daily workflow, so you would be best to ask. Have you seen noticeable difference when using this type of stabilisation based on different frame rates? I read somewhere that the higher the frame rate the better it can stabilise (Not sure why, as it is supposedly using sensor data, not actual image data…). This obviously hinders attempts at the 180 rule for smooth motion blur. Could you do an in depth review on how it fairs with different camera settings? Or if you have and I have missed it, post a link? If not, a short summary on your experience with this would suffice as well 😄 Thanks!
I like the active stabilization, but at double the cost of a a7c, I'm not sure if its needed for handheld interviews. Anyone have experience with that on a7c or a7iii?
I'd say the IBIS of the a7c and a7ii is ok if you've got a fairly steady hand. I don't have the steadiest ones naturally as I have a slight genetic tremor so for me probably not but I think for others, assuming not too much movement intended in shots, it could well be manageable
Hi! Thank you for your content! I am a blind content creator and I heard that the Alpha7iv has a screen reader. Could you please show a bit more of it. There is literally no other talking camera. I want to buy it but I need to see how the screen reader actually reads. Thank you!

Incredibly useful video. I know that Sony has the worst stabilisation of Canon and Nikon (and Fuji and Olympus), but this has allayed my fears in looking to take the plunge into my first Sony camera since the NEX-5. Standard Steadyshot looks sufficient for what I'm looking to do, and film. As others have commented, sometimes overly stabilised footage looks a bit... clinical, anyway. Great comparisons - thanks!
Some great observations there Chris and I completely agree. I actually like a bit of organic imperfection. I've noticed how many great tv shows and movies (I've been rewatching Breaking Bad recently) use handheld shots with a litte natural movement and you completely miss it unless you look for it, but it adds a little something . Great luck jumping in to Sony. I often look at Canon but a few things put me off so I'm happy enough with team S for now haha! Does the IBIS work in addition to lenses that have Optical Steadyshot (like Dual IS with Panasonic cameras), or is it either/or?
