Wasn't intended to be 'Blaxploitation' but a satirical commentary on the racism in Hollywood at the time (that still continues), and a response to Disney's "Song of the South." Viewed through lens of hindsight, America probably wasn't ready for this movie at the time it came out, but that is exactly why this movie was and remains so important.
America will never be ready for movies like this as that would require it to come to terms with it self. They would have burned Bakshi at the stake today while back then people meerely got offended. Seems we are regressing as a society as any form of selfreflection is a crime.

Haven't seen this one in some time.. As an artist, I became familiar with Bakshi's work many years ago. I have all of the animated features Fritz the Cat, Wizards, etc. I actually did a tribute to his work with a series of works on " The Mighty Heroes" Bakshi is a legend 👍👍

Nah. I agree with the original poster. This film was notorious for several reasons, and one was the language. There is no point to post this, then. This film broke barriers in the industry as well. It's like censoring Blazing Saddles as well. Granted....two totally different films and very different tones/points of view. But censoring after posting is nonsense, when the film itself was made to push boundaries
I used to see this movie as like a 4 or 5 year old in the VHS rental stores before blockbuster was even a thing, when they were all mom and pop shops. I thought it was so crazy a cartoon was rated R as a kid. Years later I started collecting movies, VHS dvd, etc. I ended up watching this movie, and the opening scene when they talk about people jumping off a bridge is really funny.

Im 22 and it’s crazy how I seen every bugs bunny flick that cable will show.but the black version that gives me a since of power and familiarity and knowledge is straight hidden.

This is one of the flicks that cannot be successfully censored. Ralph Bakshi *HATES* the title imposed on it by Al Ruddy's people. I call it Harlem Nights because that was the title Bakshi wanted. addendum: I am a black animator broad and this is my second fav Bakshi flick after American Pop.
The jarring juxtaposition of beautiful cinematography and awful caricatures is facinating and powerful, and I'll never be able to reccomend this film to anyone.

OK. I've figured out why some people are comparing this to Roger Rabbit. It must be the mix of live action and cartoon. That never occured to me because so many films before and after have done the same thing. So if that's the correlation, the analogy is kinda weak. The Incredible Mr Limpet (1964), The famous dance scene between Gene Kelly and Jerry the mouse, (Anchors Away 1945), Pete's Dragon (1977), Mary Poppins (1964), The 3 Caballeros (1944), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) to name the most obvious. You couldn't grow up in the '70s and not be aware of this technology. So by the time of RR, it was old hat. RR was more ambitious than some that I've named, but you could just as easily say it ripped off Mr Limpet since Coonskin is only partially over live footage. I used to wait every year for Mr Limpet to air as it was one of my favorite childhood movies.
