Fun fact: The young guitar player playing at the picnic (1:26:30) was Ray Parker Jr, who would go on as an adult to score hit songs like "Ghostbusters" and "Jack and Jill" as a solo artist in the 80's.
I've known for a long time that Harry Belafonte was an amazing actor, but WOW, does he disappear into his role in this movie! For my money, "Geechie Dan" steals the show, lighting up every scene he's in -- and his introduction is hilarious :-D
This is what I grew up on movies like this, no cussing, no obvious sex, just overtones of it, and pure laughter, we also weren't caught up on race and worrying about another race did, we did our own things, and we didnt take jokes personal, Milton Berle would have been cancelled by the blacks of today; blacks people was more together back then also. That’s the funniest sh** ever. Cuz he’s only 5 foot something. Bill and Sidney were both over 6 feet. The fact he beat them up and the tap music made the scene hilarious!! 😂
@@freddy8479 Til this day, the music, Seymour yelling, punching Sidney, the flying through the bar, and Percy picking him up will always make me LMAO!!

Uptown Saturday Night was produced by Warner Bros. in the midst of the blaxploitation film era along with films such as Cleopatra Jones and Black Belt Jones. Throughout his career, Poitier was frustrated with Hollywood's portrayal of blacks in film and television, which motivated him to direct films during the blaxploitation era. The first film that he directed was Buck and the Preacher, in which he starred with Belafonte. Poitier then directed Uptown Saturday Night and its sequels, Let's Do It Again and A Piece of the Action.
This movie is a FAH classic. Pretty sure Cosby's entrance to the bar as a fake tough guy with a more passive Poitier, might have influenced Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder's classic, "That's right! We bad!!" initial entrance to the jail - which soon, hilariously gets exposed - in another buddy comedy classic a few years later: Stir Crazy.
It was hard this many years later to watch this enjoyable movie considering what has befallen one Bill Cosby. Who would have thought that all those many years ago when I first encountered this movie while in foster care with my foster brothers that I'd live long enough to get to see it again, only this time with such a nasty scandal hovering over Cosby (and I did watch his show from time to time). It made the viewing experience completely different. I love how they threw around the N-word and you HAVE to be blk to enjoy it. Great movie, thanks for the download.
@@blacktreemedia nah....the reason it didn't get put on an album anywhere is because the lyrics are so wrong. Good attempted rendition of Aretha's version anyway.
