To anyone freaked out about the cognito hazard, and that genuinely felt unnerving dread and that something supernatural was happening, just know that it's all our brain's fault. I read the phrase several times in the comments before Wendigoon explained it. Nothing happened. Then after he explained it I felt extremely creeped out and had shills down my whole body, and I didn't even look at the image. What's happening here is the nocebo effect. When we trick our brains into believing something to the point that it works, in a bad way. I know a lot of people are skeptical, myself included, and still felt really weird about it. That's because you consciously know it's fake and nothing will happen, but subconsciously you're thinking "hold up... But what if...?" And that freaks you out

The water experiment has a pretty solid basis, honestly. It's perfectly acceptable that different qualities of water (river vs city vs dirty/clean or what have you) would make different ice forms and such. Y'know. Chemistry and the like. It just takes a very sharp turn at some point.

So, here's the thing about Emoto's experiments: We have literally MILLIONS of man-hours spent researching ice, freezing, and the way composition of water affects the process. The reason the different waters had different "personalities" is because they had different compositions. The different minerals suspended in these waters greatly changes the way they freeze. I mean, it's literally what they do in Antarctica. At least the civilians.

Dude, that ‘infohazard’ image completely blindsided me. Never felt anything with various other rumoured infohazard/curse/etc. images or phrases, but that image spontaneously sent me into a genuine panic and nearly made me throw up. Not like I was on edge either, I was feeling pretty zen today. I try to balance an open mind with an avoidance of jumping to conclusions, but that was a powerful and very hard-to-ignore feeling.

For anyone concerned about the term that he labels as a "cogninto hazard" at 16:40, here's a little note about that. Without mentioning what it is directly, it's basically one of those "curses" where once you see it/hear it, you are "cursed." While almost definitely harmless, (as there are plenty of spooky trolls like this such as those "send this to 5 more people or die" text chains) I figured I'd mention it since some people can get paranoid about that sort of thing.

I honestly find some of these things very interesting. Like not in a "I actually believe it" kind of way more of a "these are really cool thought experiments/writing ideas". Like a lot of these concepts on the entirety of the iceburg can be really awesome ways to start having philosophical debates and discuss really deep theories on like humanity and the universe around us. If anything people can use these ideas as prompts to write some really kick ass and disturbing books/stories.

I remember researching Dr. Emoto and his antics when I was a young lad; it was somewhat believable until I discovered he'd been taking water from polluted areas and comparing it to clean/filtered water. He stated that the different results were because of emotion which is why both test subjects froze differently, but didn't bother to use the same water for both tests. I will give him credit for one thing, and that's that freezing polluted water leads to impurities. Thanks, Dr. E.

Since Pi has (possibly) every number imaginable in its sequence - the despair code is somewhere in it too, meaning that when we reach it we won't be able to progress further or use Pi anymore, since knowledge of that part of Pi will kill us or make us severely depressed. Maybe if there's life on other planets and they have some type of despair code for them too, then this could also be a reason of why we can't contact anyone else? After progressing technology far enough they all die or stop functioning as normal living beings.

Maybe natural tobacco without what they add during manufacturing has benefits like the theory? I looked into this a while ago. There *are* some possible health benefits to tobacco (evidence isn't quite in yet), but they're also found in other plants in the nightshade family: tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and so on. As far as I know, there's no particular benefit to smoking tobacco that you couldn't get from eating some veggies.

The guy documented himself smoking cig with more and more potency and quantity to the point of him dying of cancer. The water experiments remind me of somethings did in 8th grade, we did a test where we’d insult an Apple in a jar, and compliment one in a jar, and the one that was being fed compliments rotted a lot less faster. The insulted one was starting to smell before we could finish the experiment

But I was house-sitting for my sister after I dyed my hair darker for the first time and scared the piss out of myself walking by a mirror. I thought there was an intruder and didn't recognize my reflection. There are some prosopagnosia tests that do things like remove the hair from famous people's faces and ask you to identify them, and that can make it very difficult. (For some people, that's not the giveaway. Obama's ears and Marilyn Monroe's mole, for example, are what I identify them by.) I'd be interested to see my own face sans hair shuffled in and if I could recognize myself without it. One of my sisters does look very similar to me, though, and when she came up to me at work one day with no warning, I was like, "Oh hello! Can I help you find something today, ma'am?" and she was like, "....Uuuuh, yeah, you." Whoops!

OK so if I see someone I know, even know well, from one place, in another, it always takes me a few to figure out who they are (if I figure it out at all... side note: I WILL recognize they're familiar n that I SHOULD know, though... except one guy. Apparently he followed me all over texas, even when I moved away for several years n then came back... was even coming to a bar I bartended at 5 days a week,, at least once or twice a week for a couple months,, n only during the day when there was 2 or less other customers, I believe that was intentional... HE HAS NEVER ONCE EVEN SEEMED FAMILIAR IN THE SLIGHTEST TO ME!!! and the only reason I know this is cuz he would retell me all this, n then while I'd have the memory of all the visits n being told all this,, n even what we would talk about,, n that he would always wear his sunglasses inside, his face was completely unknown to me every single time,, like my brain blocks n locks his face from my mind for some reason... some things he said n others I pieced together from it all really started scaring me,, so when I'd figure it out each time,, I'd immediately call my bf or even exes to get them up there,, n he'd always leave immediately when they'd come in.... I know something happened one night that I've not had a single memory of since, n he informed me he was there that night,, so whatever he did to me,, has caused my brain to completely lock that n him up tightly n far away from my ability to access it,which I can only assume it must have been pretty horrific n terrifying if my brain won't even let me recognize his fa e as even a hint of familiar... ), like I only recognize people in the surroundings I'm familiar with them in.
Listening to the despair code reminded me of this mission in cyberpunk where you watch these important figures slowly get their entire existence rewritten like a line of code to the point where they didn’t know who they were anymore and what memories or things were real and gave you this huge spiral of what was grounded in reality and what was all this setup to control someones identity. That being said I do think humans have a vast interlinked consciousness, so memetics in theory would work the same way as a haunted house, the more people believe in it, the worse it gets.
The Despair Code reminds me of a sci-fi short story I read a long time ago about Basilisk Images, and how the future internet went back to ASCII to prevent people from seeing them. Basically the premise was some images could kill you just by looking at it because there was a fractal design your brain could not process and caused kind of like a brain meltdown. According to the story, even the Mona Lisa had an area that if blown up contained one of these kiler designs. Cool but scary!

To anyone freaked out about the cognito hazard, and that genuinely felt unnerving dread and that something supernatural was happening, just know that it's all our brain's fault.
I read the phrase several times in the comments before Wendigoon explained it. Nothing happened. Then after he explained it I felt extremely creeped out and had shills down my whole body, and I didn't even look at the image.
What's happening here is the nocebo effect. When we trick our brains into believing something to the point that it works, in a bad way.
I know a lot of people are skeptical, myself included, and still felt really weird about it. That's because you consciously know it's fake and nothing will happen, but subconsciously you're thinking "hold up... But what if...?" And that freaks you out

So, here's the thing about Emoto's experiments: We have literally MILLIONS of man-hours spent researching ice, freezing, and the way composition of water affects the process. The reason the different waters had different "personalities" is because they had different compositions. The different minerals suspended in these waters greatly changes the way they freeze.
I mean, it's literally what they do in Antarctica. At least the civilians.

Never felt anything with various other rumoured infohazard/curse/etc. images or phrases, but that image spontaneously sent me into a genuine panic and nearly made me throw up. We rationalize it's a silly concept, a demon stalks you for hearing a sentence or looking at an image, but that superstitious part of us persists with the "what if".
That's the "demon". That uneasiness and nervousness you feel by thinking about it, by looking at the image, that's the demon itself. "It grows stronger and targets you the more you look at the image or hear the sentence", the demon isn't a supernatural being, the demon is the fear you feel of this concept being real, the demon is the "what if" that the dark corner of your brain keeps uttering.

I honestly find some of these things very interesting. Like not in a "I actually believe it" kind of way more of a "these are really cool thought experiments/writing ideas". I remember researching Dr. Emoto and his antics when I was a young lad; it was somewhat believable until I discovered he'd been taking water from polluted areas and comparing it to clean/filtered water. He stated that the different results were because of emotion which is why both test subjects froze differently, but didn't bother to use the same water for both tests. Since Pi has (possibly) every number imaginable in its sequence - the despair code is somewhere in it too, meaning that when we reach it we won't be able to progress further or use Pi anymore, since knowledge of that part of Pi will kill us or make us severely depressed.
Maybe if there's life on other planets and they have some type of despair code for them too, then this could also be a reason of why we can't contact anyone else? After progressing technology far enough they all die or stop functioning as normal living beings.

I looked into this a while ago. There *are* some possible health benefits to tobacco (evidence isn't quite in yet), but they're also found in other plants in the nightshade family: tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and so on. As far as I know, there's no particular benefit to smoking tobacco that you couldn't get from eating some veggies.

@@hibiscushiatus6833 Good question! It's a little hard to say, because I've had virtually the same haircut since I was a toddler, so I think I just recognize my bangs. But I was house-sitting for my sister after I dyed my hair darker for the first time and scared the piss out of myself walking by a mirror. I thought there was an intruder and didn't recognize my reflection.
There are some prosopagnosia tests that do things like remove the hair from famous people's faces and ask you to identify them, and that can make it very difficult. (For some people, that's not the giveaway. Obama's ears and Marilyn Monroe's mole, for example, are what I identify them by.) I'd be interested to see my own face sans hair shuffled in and if I could recognize myself without it.
One of my sisters does look very similar to me, though, and when she came up to me at work one day with no warning, I was like, "Oh hello! Can I help you find something today, ma'am?" and she was like, "....Uuuuh, yeah, you." Whoops!

On the flip side, if I'm not expecting to meet someone I know and they've changed their style, I cannot recognize them. It is the equivalent of Superman putting his glasses back on, I'm completely blind to their identity, lol.
OK so if I see someone I know, even know well, from one place, in another, it always takes me a few to figure out who they are (if I figure it out at all... side note: I WILL recognize they're familiar n that I SHOULD know, though... except one guy. Apparently he followed me all over texas, even when I moved away for several years n then came back... was even coming to a bar I bartended at 5 days a week,, at least once or twice a week for a couple months,, n only during the day when there was 2 or less other customers, I believe that was intentional... HE HAS NEVER ONCE EVEN SEEMED FAMILIAR IN THE SLIGHTEST TO ME!!! and the only reason I know this is cuz he would retell me all this, n then while I'd have the memory of all the visits n being told all this,, n even what we would talk about,, n that he would always wear his sunglasses inside, his face was completely unknown to me every single time,, like my brain blocks n locks his face from my mind for some reason... some things he said n others I pieced together from it all really started scaring me,, so when I'd figure it out each time,, I'd immediately call my bf or even exes to get them up there,, n he'd always leave immediately when they'd come in.... I know something happened one night that I've not had a single memory of since, n he informed me he was there that night,, so whatever he did to me,, has caused my brain to completely lock that n him up tightly n far away from my ability to access it,which I can only assume it must have been pretty horrific n terrifying if my brain won't even let me recognize his fa e as even a hint of familiar... ), like I only recognize people in the surroundings I'm familiar with them in.
Listening to the despair code reminded me of this mission in cyberpunk where you watch these important figures slowly get their entire existence rewritten like a line of code to the point where they didn’t know who they were anymore and what memories or things were real and gave you this huge spiral of what was grounded in reality and what was all this setup to control someones identity. Crazzzyyyy stuff

The Despair Code reminds me of a sci-fi short story I read a long time ago about Basilisk Images, and how the future internet went back to ASCII to prevent people from seeing them. Basically the premise was some images could kill you just by looking at it because there was a fractal design your brain could not process and caused kind of like a brain meltdown. According to the story, even the Mona Lisa had an area that if blown up contained one of these kiler designs. Cool but scary!

I've loved this entire series so much. Its lead to so many interesting conversations between my brilliant husband and I whenever I explained a theory I've heard. I cant wait to rewatch this whole thing again with him. By proxy through me he's a huge fan of your work, lol.
My husband and i were in the middle of a movie one night and i mentioned during a slow scene that some people believe Finland isn't real. He was so shocked that the movie was paused and we spent a good 30 mins discussing and researching online. I love this series for that reason.
