I saw this onscreen about 9 years ago. The 2-strip Technicolor process is fascinating to see as it is here. I must have seen a restored print because it looked as good as the clip.
Got this movie on DVD about two years ago. Love it! This picture is from 1933, in color! The stars that have top billing in this picture are Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray. But this is definitely a Glenda Farrell movie all the way. This might be her first major movie in which she is basically a staring actress. She and Frank McHugh as her boss and editor of the newspaper she works for, have excellent comical chemistry. Such fun acting makes a ridiculous plot almost believable. Haha. The plot is too far fetched for even 2022. Dead bodies preserved carefully in wax to be put on display at a museum drawing crowds because of such incredible realism from the wax statues. Ha ha ha. But with such wonderful life in the acting, makes this a fun movie. Fay Wray didn't mind being in horror movies because, according to Wikipedia, she said she knew there was a market in horror movies. Beautiful Canadian lady that also can ssscccrrreeeeaaaammmmmm. Cool to see her in her natural look instead of a blond wig. Glenda's energy is everywhere in this picture. Despite being typecast as a fast talking reporter in later movies (legend has it that the Lois Lane character in the Superman comics was modeled after Glenda's character in the Torchie Blane movies) I believe this woman had awesome acting range. The fact that she was a stage actress, and continue to do so during her Hollywood career proves it. Quite charming, as was Fay Wray. Well I say IS, because there is a afterlife. I will always love classic cinema. The good guys always win. Well before film noir, but that's just another fun topic for later discussion. I know that actors and actresses are regular people with faults like you and me, but just to see these actreess on my tv screen. To actually get used to seeing some of their familiar mannerisms in different pictures, yet they bring life to various characters that they play. Well in honor of the joy I get from watching such charming faces, (I know I already do this) i make it a point to honor and respect women everywhere. Lol, yes I'm easy to please. Enjoy the movie.
Just bought and watched this. Fantastic!!! Holds up really well. I would rank it up there with Frankenstein and Dracula and the other great horror films of that era. The color and atmosphere is stunning. It's def an incredible film to look at.
If you do a bit of googling you will find some 35mm frames and some talk about the restoration. It was a big deal to restore this and as you can see from the credits a lot of different groups put in money to make it happen. There is talk they will restore Dr. X as well.
I just recently found out about this new restored version.I have the original VHS version the one with the scratches.I was appalled that Time Warner had decided to enhanced it in 3 c olors for tcm showing in the late 90's ,both this and D.r .X.. Finally they had gotten common sense and put it back the way it was meant to be seen ,red and green and no ore scratches or white blotches like you saw on the VHS venison.I even found out that the argument scene ,which is cut in the the jack warners print, was found in a french print and was put back too.
@@jaywoelfel9228no it's the scene where Glenda Farrell's word is cut off by editing. A French print was found to complete the scene between the argument of her boss, but the word mention was without the soundtrack so they dubbed the word from another film she said the same word. What your talking about could be an outtake that has been thrown away a long time ago . The unrestored version Glenda says," don't be St"-,cut,.The restored version, "don't be Stupid! dubbed from another film. I'll be getting my copy tomorrow or Friday.
@@michaelmcgee8543 Thanks, I know the cut you're talking about, I almost thought she was saying don't be a "shit." There was on the old transfer and DVD a bad reel change as Atwill is getting up just before the unmasking, that I hope assume they have fixed some of his dialogue there got chopped up too.
@@michaelmcgee8543 That's unfortunate as it's the big unmasking scene, but being at a reel change and if no negative exists that'd be a place most prints would have some jump in them. I should have my blu ray shortly, looking forward to it regardless of what damage remains, I'm sure it's a major improvement overall.
Nice to see this all cleaned up, stabilized and visually restored. Would've preferred to see the film with the "blue-orange" bias as previously had been shown, rather than so much green. The "bluer" look seems more appropriate to the settings. But, who's gonna seriously complain? A favorite film (much prefer this one to the remake, HOUSE OF WAX).
I've just watched a copy of this which came with 3D House of Wax. Not restored unfortunately, but a great atmospheric movie. Loved it. (Many scenes are blow for blow same as House of Wax). cheers
Having seen this otherwise obscure movie, I can say *House of Wax* is far superior to it. It ironed out the plot, streamlined it. This movie hinges on numerous improbable coincidences to move along, and numerous arguments scenes for banter's sake to force a sudden proposal. No sudden unforeshadowed romance is in HOW, nor pointless fighting scenes. The coincidences are there, but they aren't the same great stretches of this movie. And Vincent Price.
You can get it on DVD on eBay. Research on the early process of the two color technicolor process? Or the origins of early horror movies? Happy hunting. Definitely a fun movie to have.
Behind every creative killers, lies an innocent soul among them, this one was made by the greed and selfishness of one person, who destroyed his loving works.

Remember watching this for the first time on a stormy summer night when I was 10. The opening scene was perfect for that night.

That looks stunning!!! Wish you should tell us about how you restored that!!!

Is this the scene with the two gals arguing while the "phantom" is lurking about on the roof? Someone posted the script pages for this scene.

update. That scene was not complete. Glenda Farrel still said Don't be Sill!. The word silly was not complete and the scene still jump cut.

Can the entire movie be shown?
They are keeping the good stuff off screen, as these are just dialogue scenes--nothing wrong with making us wait.
Could you please upload full movie?
You can get this movie on DVD on eBay.
Could you please upload this more sequences?

It was pretty good. The female characters and 30's dialogue were great.
I missed it 😩 it was first time this restored version was on national television too.
I heard about a new year clip on 12.31.32 to 1.1.33 idk if it in this movie but I heard about the clip
Is there a site I can watch this on for my university research?
