Nick Mottola And the water use was ridiculous.
However, in that era there was an ad: "Electricity costs less today you know, than it did many long years ago." That was probably the time of the lowest prices adjusted for inflation. There weren't enough consumers yet to utilize all that could be produced. Hence, the ad campaigns. After all, many parts of the US already had access to low cost gas and an infrastructure to support it. Electricity was sold as cleaner than gas, and it was considered safer because it never blew up a house and you couldn't mess up using an oven or burner, with no matches needed. Gas, though, had been considered a big advance over wood or coal in the home, as in the saying, "Now you're cooking with gas!" It beats electricity for precise cooking because the heat stops when you turn it off, unlike the electric burner that has to cool off. Chefs prefer gas. People who just want to feed the family can make do with electricity. :) And the harried housewife could stick her head in the oven and survive. (Bye, Bye, Birdie illustrated that point with Albert's mother.)

Everything was less then and life was simpler, not as many expectations from keeping up with technology as it has done to us today, not as much stress. Advancing technology costs us more in money and time requirements as well. Too much to keep up with today. That's why people love these old videos. Soothing to watch a world of less stress where their problems are minor compared to ours today. We have now adjusted to the 2+ income families to keep up with these lifestyle demands of living.

In 1969, Francine (the daughter) will be sixteen, Judy will be 37, and Alex will be 40. Francine will love the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, will wear mini skirts and will do drugs behind the school.

"Calm down?" The part where she turned all docile and sweet and amazed at how smart Alex is was the height of her manipulation. That is classic, textbook, "Feminine Wiles 101," right there. I never use those tricks because 1) I have too much ego, and 2) I'm still in shock that they work, to this day. Men will happily give you everything they have if you let them think they're smart and impressive and have the answers to your problems. I'm not denigrating them - it's just human nature. Men want to help helpless women the way women want to help helpless animals. It's why women can manipulate men in that way and my cat gets everything he wants.

At 75 I can remember 1952 when the appliances were affordable and first came out! It was less work for the housewife's but they were still exhausted at the end of the day. Back in the day before all these modern appliances came out, the cloth's were hung in the basement in the winter. In the summer they were hung out to dry! Those were the days when people seemed to bit more happier than today. Our country was not that deep in debt. Americans only used cash to purchase items, and did not use the charge cards, and go in debt!!! People bought things only when they saved up and had the money!! Great video that brings back memories of the 1950's. The young generation today will never know what it was like.

Anthony Lucchese I wasn’t born until the 80’s but I’ve always found the 50’s interesting. I do believe that there’s “nothing new under the sun” and that people were unhappy too back then just as much as any other time, but no social media to constantly rant on, and people kept their problems to themselves. I do wish we had the prosperity back that we had in past decades. I know everything goes in cycles though... Great Depression, WWII, prosperous 50’s, crash in the 70’s, booming economy in the 80’s, etc.

Many years ago there was a tv show called, "Hi Honey, I'm Home".
It was set in the 1950s, but only for the family that lived in the house. The neighbors and the town were set in modern time. It wasn't on very long, but I remember I did enjoy it. It had to have been more than 20 or 25 years ago at least. You might want to look it up, there might be some videos on the internet.

It's amasing how she shut the news off at "just the right time"

I had a good laugh at Judy's skirt being the same pattern as the drapes and the chair dad was sitting in 😂
