  • Dave Latham is a legend in the field of British Gun Dogs. He has bred, trained and competed with Labrador retrievers for over 40 years. He has won the prestigious IGL 4 times. That is an astounding feat. He's a most charming conversationalist and dog lover.
In this chat we talk about training, breeding and competing at the very highest level. Dave is a wealth of knowledge and this makes for a very educational and fun chat, I always love our conversations -and I think you will too.

Why would a Terrier guy listen to this...
Because there's always something to learn from different breeds and disciplines
    Thank you gentlemen

This was lovely. Listening to this shows passion when spending time with dogs. Although I have no understanding to the competition, the Labrador is just plain lovely to listen about. Great video. Thank you! Love as well to Janet, Jimi and Duane from Cooper in Florida.❤

Field bred working labs; I’m very biased but they’re the best dogs on Earth.
    Looking forward to this.

Robert, you're one of the best interviewers!!!!
I have no interest in hunting dogs, BUT I listen to ALL your podcasts. I find I always learn something, and find them very interesting.
We train IGP, & PPD Malinois. Eventually, we will start our own breeding program.

Loved this so much. I'm new to gundog training (HPR not lab) but so nice to have you asking all the questions Robert. Can feel a bit complicated to an outsider. David Latham seems like such a lovely genuine bloke. Thoroughly enjoyed the pod.

I'm really excited to watch this one! I'm new to hunt/field trials and have a new puppy that I plan to take to a club training session next month to see how we both like it.

dog wise I love it, I love the training that goes into it to build a good dog and a well behaved dog and working dogs do need a job. I'd love to know what happens to all the birds taht are shot, are they used for people food or dog food afterwards? I have less issue with shooting when there's usage behind it vs just for fun/proof. Also are we moving over from lead shots to copper shots? that would also limit poisoning to the land and others.
Conservation wise I'm not a fan. We have huge swarths of land being managed just for hunting and the prey which is harming biodiversity overall, moor burns are getting out of control, ground nesting native birds are being disturbed too and dogs are leaving pesticides etc on the land which again is harming the biota of the soils and some managers are also poisoning birds of prey. Pets granted are worse because people just don't realise the damage their dogs are doing by allowing them to run wild through the countryside.

At 25 minutes, ive just learned this the hard way lol. My Great Dane is 5 months and usually a verbal keeps her in the front yard but now i have to walk over to her and she aborts. I think it's funny because as soon as she sees me coming she starts behaving and we go back to the front yard. She knows, she wants to know I mean it I guess

How come you never have Mike Lardy on your Podcast. Best American Field Trial trainer handler ever? EVER! In addition to winning seven Nationals, Mike has handled 36 National finalists, and numerous Handjem-trained dogs have been Finalists with their owner-handlers in American field trials.

This seems like an inappropriate place to ask this question. Disrespectful to the guest.

@@smfrink it’s the internet, nothing is appropriate. I’ll play along though. When would it be appropriate?
