- David Latham is a legend in the field of Labrador Retrievers. He has won the I.G.L., International Gundog League Championship on 4 different occasions, something that has been done only 2 other times in the Championships 100+ year history.
In this chat we talk about his Labrador Retrievers, the champions, the ones he's training now as well as others. We discuss his strategies, his mindset and what makes a winner a winner. Dave is is a fine gentleman with a great whit. I had an incredible time talking with him and learning more about what makes a champion a champion, and David Latham is a champion. The British Labrador Retrievers are quite different than those here in the USA and the trials are very different. We talk about that and what it takes to compete in the International Gundog League Championships.

Bout time you ad a British guest ;) Thanks RC and thanks to David !
This is an awesome video about what goes into training a hunting dog. My Dad and I trained our first 2 Labs to hunt. It was an awesome experience! They weren’t competitors but they were definitely driven and good hunters! ❤️🤙🏼
I trained with Dave Latham last week. Fantastic day and he’s a fountain of knowledge
wish I was closer to train with him! Good on you!
Great discussion, thanks for putting it together and to Dave for the time!
I could listen to David all day! Interesting and informative interview. Thank you.
Me too. I hope to have him back soon.
Another great interview. Thank you, Robert and David. What a nice gentleman.
Love this so much! I've listened to it over and over again, so much wonderful information! For anyone interested in Labrador retrievers, this podcast is a must. I hope there will be more! Thank you Robert and David!

Great interview
Really good interview!
Would love to see a interview with a "crazy spaniel" trainer!
Great podcast👏
Not to do with hunting but with gun noise. I made a GREAT mistake by not exposing him to the noise of a gun shot. He has a intense fear to the point when I grab a gun, he shays back. Now, at 4 years old, guess its too late to train him to not fear!!!
I failed to mention he is a GS
Watch your videos for Goofy and general dog training , I've got working HPRs so this was unexpected ,really excellent questions good job👍
Hi rob. When should i introduce a slip leash? My dog is 3 months old right now
Slip lead is too restrictive for a young dog like yours because it's too short. Get a very long lead, 5m long, and a normal collar, and let the dog explore the world and learn through his nose and eyes. Allow enough of lead. He will still be close to you in case he needs protection.
How do you get the dogs to not react to the loud noise of the guns firing?
Good question. I wondered that too. My yellow Labrador, exposed to gunshot at a young age and bred for hunting, didn't mind it at all, and when he associated it with a retrieve, it was very positive. My black Lab got anxious, drooled and paced. He was not exposed to the gunshot since he was bred for service work, not hunting. So I'd say a combination of breeding and early, positive experiences.
