Trapped in a Culture, Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation, Part 31 of 44, Hassan Campbell

- In our next sit down with Hassan Campbell, he describes what would go on at the apartment Bambaataa shared with Billy “Amid” Henderson. This apartment at 1609 E. 174th Street doubled as the Zulu Nation’s headquarters.
More on the lawsuit against Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation here: www.metropolisnewspaper.com/a...
Bronx-Lance Taylor took on the name Afrika Bambaataa and started a hip-hop awareness group. But former members say the Universal Zulu Nation was a violent gang that disintegrated into a cult with Bambaataa as the god-head. In 2016, several men came forward with disturbing tales of what they say took place from the 1970s into the 1990s. Although Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun was the motto of the Zulu Nation, Bambaataa fashioned the organization’s doctrine after Malachi York’s Nuwabian Nation, the Nation of Islam, the Moorish Science Temple, and the 5% Nation.
“Today, the Zulu Nation counts hip-hop royalty like Nas, Lil Wayne, and Big Boi as affiliates, in addition to younger rappers like Joey Bada$ and Freddie Gibbs. Acclaimed TV series The Get Down-not to mention countless documentaries and a recent showcase at Cornell University-credit Bambaataa with uniting a divided neighborhood, offering a way out of gang life, and helping to launch a movement that would place African American art forms at the center of global popular culture.” wrote Dave Wedge, Vice Magazine.
Since the story broke, hip hop has yet to come to terms with the importance of this subject.
In this series, original interview footage is being shown to the public for the first time, encouraging a broader conversation and deep dive into what may have taken place.

What’s ironic (in my life) is I never liked Bams records Planet Rock or other wise. I always thought they (Zulu) were corny as musicians. I got into Hip-Hop heavy 86/87. KRS was one of my favs & he shouted Bam out often 🤔. I just didn’t understand why Zulu was mentioned so much. You would think there’s more hits than Planet Rock or that there’s some kinda real spitter in the actual camp. Nope! Is wouldn’t be mad removing that faction from Hip-Hop.
& yeah take whatever goes with them.
Watch the documentary hip hop evolution on Netflix. I don’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure Bambatta helped hip hop become more mainstream, that's why they're so talked about. Him and those around him were pioneers. I’m to young to know any of his music though.
@@justlooking1087 I’ve seen it. Planet Rock & Looking For The Perfect Beat are his biggest records. Did he produce them? Did he write them ? Here’s what I’m saying… I’ve never seen Bam DJ a party & he’s not a spitter. I figured he made moves on an executive level for reasons his name was in the mix. It seems more & more though he was a gang leader who preyed on “lost” boys. Then used the emerging Hip-Hop scene as his playground sorta speak. To me Bam has always been a shadowy figure. I wanna know what mainstream artist he actually put on. Which artist has he had a direct hand in signing. Seems more so he was just promising stardom to young teenage boys. Another thing I’ve noticed is so many rappers 80s/90s are Zulu Nation but you gotta distinctly ask or pull it out of them (no pun 😂)
No one is repping Zulu loud & proud. How long have they known? Before joining? Again… it seems Bam came up on a hit song or two. Then used that clout ..finessed & parlayed himself into young boys lives. Not one artist, with the exception of KRS has came out in support of Bam. Actually they haven’t said anything against either. It’s like …who knows…what who knows… but this definitely isn’t new news. If Bambatta is 1/2 of the myths surrounding him there will definitely be some mainstream rappers coming under fire before the smoke clears. We’ll see.
Pardon the paragraph. Hip-Hop is a passionate subject for me.
planet rock is garbage! most people think so. no one said anything out of respect for who bam presented himself to be. now that the truth is out about him, people are saying how they really feel.
@Brain Check Because a lot of people don't know what else is out there to be played. What gets played, is what people know. What people know, will be determined by the powers that be.
@Brain Check It's worse than cuba, russia, and n. korea. the bottom line is, what gets played is not determined by the people that the culture comes from.

Twisted. Manipulative. Hideous. Insidious.
Let's take one minute to understand what this survivor is stating. The alleged nature of the abuse spans more than three generations over multiple continents and may have involved countless victims, many of whom were reluctant participants after the fact. Others may have been willing participants who may or may not have been extorted into silence due to their own culpability. With so many individuals associated with the group who served prison sentences, and should have to know what was going, one has to wonder why they didn't drop a dime on A.B. Unless they were victims too or participants. Are those 'books' porn for A.B. or a get-out-of-jail card for A.B.
He's a liar
@He THIGH'D ME Hassan was a minor when that happened to him, a grown man can’t have a 12 year old lover you dunce. Shows us the type of mentality you have for even suggesting that it’s possible.

With time passing, I realized my parents never truly loved me. That's why I always focus on trying to find a girlfriend. Because I'm looking for true love, something I've been neglected by my family so I try to look for it on somebody else. If your parents beat you up they don't love you. Keep that in mind guys. If you get a whooping, you're getting that instead of a blessing... RUN!

Good morning.Great interview.Lance aka Bam need to be stoned!
In no way do support, approve of, or condone sexual misconduct especially against a child but I can't allow myself to feel the same way for a 15 year old male, who was molested particularly when it didn't occur in the household. There's nothing in the world that would force me to in essence seek out my abuser as did Hassan. He continued to go to where he was being assaulted. After having a view of what was going on prior to being assaulted, then after. For YEARS, as a young MAN. There's no mental, emotional, psychological, intimidation, NOTHING that would tell my 15 year old self to continue going somewhere where such activity was taking place. There had to be some pleasure or something to gain from being there. He always speaks on the allure of being in the company of someone prominent and the other prominent acquaintances that came with being in Bam's presence. My manhood could not have been traded for that. I knew better and so did he. He willfully participated. Though no minor can consent to sexual activities, a minor, most definitely by age 15 has the mental capacity to decipher a good situation and a bad one. No one could have "manipulated" him to publicly participate. No one could have gotten him to go rob a bank. No one could have convinced him to do anything else of detriment to himself at that age. So there was clearly some kinda fulfillment there. Then we can't ignore that as a fully grown man in his 30s he was willing to harm a 14 tear old who experienced the same sick experience as he previously experienced for stabbing Bam after awakening and realizing he had been assaulted. He was at his bedside in the hospital and as he said himself, he was the first one on GO to avenge Bam's assault. He clearly enjoyed what was done to him but he was in essence a participant in furthering the terror by silencing a potential accuser. He wanted to help keep it going.
.....write a book, geez.
Trauma varies the young boy was groomed and taken advantage of if you were strong enough to not let that happen to you great job but do t down the next person you don’t know what they went through
Its called Stockholm syndrome. Look it up. Victims of abuse do not rationalize events in the same manner that others do. He was desperate for a father figure, he was already being sexually abused at home, he may have seen this behavior as "normal" in some way, even though it repulsed him.
