Toyota Yaris Cross vs Ford Puma vs Skoda Kamiq: 2021 Small SUV Comparison Australia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- This comparison test takes three of the most recently-launched light SUVs. They are brand-new nameplates for the brands here, and we're sticking them head-to-head to find out which we think is more worthy of your dollars.
We've got the much-hyped Yaris Cross, the important-for-the-brand Ford Puma, and the Skoda Kamiq, which we think flys under the radar compared to the others.
We've also chosen them with a price benchmark of $30,000 which has us in the base Ford Puma (simply called Puma), the base Skoda Kamiq 85TSI, and the mid-spec Toyota Yaris Cross GXL 2WD Hybrid.
So which should you choose? We've stuck these three all-new SUVs head-to-head in our eight review criteria, including price and specs, design, practicality, engine and transmission, fuel consumption, drive experience, safety, and ownership in order to give you the most complete picture.
With three all-new nameplates with no established history, this should be a particularly interesting test, watch on or read the full review on carsguide.com.au to see which one we tip as the winner. As always though, keep in mind that an outright winner on our scheme might not be the car most suited to your lifestyle, so take a closer look at the criteria most relevant to you as each of the choices in this review have their own pros and cons.

I've had a Yaris Cross for 8 months. The only time fuel consumption has been 4.8 l/100kms was on extended highway driving at 100kph plus.
Around town, it's never gone more than 4, usually 3.7 or 3.8. Currently it' showing 3.6.
Same.
Driving mine at around 3.8-3.9 in a pretty hilly area.
That's not just a great value, it is also WAY below the advertised one.
Disagree on the Yaris, I took one out on a UK B road, and it was really good fun; light but communicative steering, excellent body control and well-damped. I liked the 3cyl warble too, feels not unlike a tame GR Yaris.
Finally a reviewer that talks about seat comfort.
Great in-depth review with a wealth of information. I valued your objectivity and your approach. Thanks.
I like the look of the ford, however I ordered the Skoda Kamiq TSI 1.5 petrol with DSG7 and 5 year/100.000 km extended guarantee. Main reason to go for the Skoda was functionality or utility of the vehicle. It’s a joy to ride, silent while driving, low windows so you have a clear overview of your surroundings and traffic situation. This is our second Skoda family car, the other is the Yeti, and you just smile when you see the running cost and dependability of these cars.
Excellent presentation. Which cars have an emergency manual release for the fuel filler door? It’s a worry when it won’t open at the bowser.
The Skoda should also have a huge under floor area. I like how the Skoda went USB-C only. Much better use of space.
You got it right! Happy Kamiq owner here
Ehat about ownership? How much per visit?
@@justg94 less than $300 per visit every 15000 Kms or 12months whichever comes first.
@@julzyin thanks
@@justg94 I got the 5 year package for 1400, includes 5 year roadside assistance. Works out less than $300 per service!
Can I ask if power is still decent with A/C cranking this summer?? 85 or 110TSI?
Thinking of the reason someone would want a compact SUV over a hatch is because of ride hight and ground clearance. The Skoda is a good hatch as stated repeatedly in the review, but it doesn’t have any of the SUV features. The Toyota is overpriced even in the base model and the fact that it doesn’t have a driver arm rest means the driving experience is uncomfortable. The Puma is the win for me, it has everything I want in a compact SUV.
@TigerFunker yeah thats right.....i agree with you
The Ford Puma is slightly one of the newest out of the three. Have driven the 3 of them and overall the Ford Puma is definitely the winner. It has the best look and sporty shape, better road handling in corners and bumps, best seat comfort, and the best soft plastics in the dashboard.
Maybe...but you didn't mention the huge advantage of thr toyota brand, the reliability.
Excellent comparison!
Agreed !
Love my skoda kamiq 1.5 litre style 2020.
Black magic.
An excellent car.
I might be in the minority here but i like the look of the yaris cross more than the kamiq.
I don't understand why more new cars don't have usb-c only. Skoda has got that right.
You probably didn't use a compatible USB-C cable when connecting Apple Carplay / Android Auto in the Skoda; if you use a cable designed only for USB power delievery and not Power+Data; it won't work.
Puma is winner.🍾🤑🥳👍💯👀
Perfect comparison!
I’m waiting for my Yaris Cross excel with its City pack upgrade to arrive in March 👍🇬🇧
I’ve always gone for an upgrade in any car that I’ve bought as it makes a huge difference in the driving ?
Let me answer your question about how Kamiq feels over harsh surfaces with 16 inch instead of 18 inch, it is still not good, I have a Scala with 16 inch, over harsh roads even my old Corsa D was quieter.
Do you have Kamiq CNG in Australia?
The yaris cross has to be the most awaited car still not out on sale in the UK
Decent but the interior feels dated.
Coming second quarter this year
You’re not missing much… I’ve just going through all the small svu types for purchase… I ended up buying the Puma. Kamiq was second for me, the Yaris Cross wasn’t even on the list. Terrible inside…
Great review
Thanks for watching!
Which car would you rather own for six years?
Just ordered my kamiq today, standard model with a panoramic glass roof. So excited.
What was the lead time on it Emile? I ordered my Kamiq in November - they pushed delivery from Feb to April now because of a ‘fire’ on the ship from Europe. Hard to believe, maybe I’m too skeptical!
@@bertelli1990 They said it would come February 26 but it came today. Way ahead of schedule
Hi Emile, is it possible to just order a standard and add the panoramic roof- I thought you had to get the Monte Carlo for the panoramic roof- and how much did that set you back if you don’t mind me asking? Also did you purchase in Australia? Please let me know- came across the Skoda and I’m really interested
The hilarious part is this new compact SUV segments are the same sizes as my 1998 and 2002 Rav4. They made SUV's larger since then, then created smaller ones again.
Very good review, make the same decision as you do.
My pick of the bunch is Puma. It tries to fit this compact Crossover segment the best.
Yaris Cross is just jacked up Yaris and Kamiq simple look like a hatch.
Question: WHY on earth Apple Car Play and Android Auto didn't work on Skoda? Was it the specific car problematic or it's not included? Pls let me know as I am interested in this car. Thanks.
it's included, just didn't work. as per later comments. Could be using the wrong usb-c cable.
Koji automobil od ova tri bi izabrali ako bi vam ga dali besplatno je najbolja ocena
None is best for all
Kamiq is best for practicality
Puma is best for driving
Toyota is best for reability
Well said. Ro wisdom. ;)
South Africa doesn't have any of these cars. Just a Yaris hatch and Ford Figo
What color for puma is that???
I wonder how they can have any link to an SUV where you sit higher above the road. These are just family hatchbacks
Indeed, but they cost more & probably don't drive as well as the hatch backs they're based on.
Skoda all the way.Tom looks good I a Skoda.
Good review 👍 I like the look of the Ford..
I rather the escape but still the puma is amazing
You drive a Yaris Hybrid LTD 2wd , a different one you have tested .
yes, turbo lag on the Kamiq can be touch and go sometimes n some situations ...
Ford Puma is the best in my opinion. Great combination of design, economical and power. Especially the ST range, well worth it 👍
and problematic junk transmission...
@@trumpeldorf
Several years ago there was a problem with dry clutches. Now all are wet clutches once again so more than likely eliminated the chance of any potential dramas
@@denniss2474 These robotic automatic transmissions have always been and will always be garbage, dry or wet clutch. Volkswagen launched this cheap crap that only benefits the manufacturer that works on the principle of Chinese factories - "produce unreliable and disposable crap." and these robotic automatic transmissions were promoted by fools and corrupt journalists who like to talk about "technologies", although we are talking about just a cheap and shitty replacement for normal, comfortable and reliable automatic transmissions.
Yay, Skoda.... Greeting all the way from Prague :)
Why use the ford puma for comparison, when you have Kona or T cross as better cars?
A binnicle is a column populated with instruments. It is not a door bin.
Yep. I miss my Fabia wagon. We went Mazda and are very happy, but we should have upsized to the Kodiaq. They are simply clever, while we were simply dumb. Mazda is so vanilla.
Well done Skoda, a well-deserved win!
Very surprised that the Toyota didn’t win especially given it is a hybrid
You will understand straight away why.. once u have test drive one.. noisy.. bumpy.. plastic everything.. old tech.. uncomfy.. no centre arm rest.. tiny info screen.. and too expensive.. only one thing out of any goodies is fuel consumption..
@@JP-hh2qj fair enough
I don't know why you keep saying the Yaris cross is a nice looking car inside or out. Its terrible. It's a shiny 1994 Hyundai excel.
I like it in white
Also Puma
Well I love the yarriscross ^^
Yes
Can't wait for my Kamiq to arrive
Waiting for mine too, expecting it for the end of the next week
Why not Seat Arona or VW T Cross? They are the same cars with different design.
The combined output of Yaris Cross is 85kW
The power of suggestion made these reviewers feel that it had a lot less power…😩
I would personally go for the Yaris and would probably even prefer a non hybrid version which I think you should've tested as well. The main reason that I would've chosen the Yaris is because it looks as though it has better ground clearance which is the main reason that I would have an SUV in the first place apart from being easier to get in and out of. The other two don't seem to have much more ground clearance than most cars once had as late as the early eighties. Most cars including all I've owned spend a very high percentage of the time in the city and for that job the Yaris is not much worse than the others. I also think that Toyota has better durability and reliability than the other two brands as well as better customer service.
@KongWaiKei yes Toyota isn’t what it used to be though I think the brand is normally your best bet. I wouldn’t keep a Golf much longer than 5 years though.
@KongWaiKeiIn some cases yes but I don’t know if Hyundai has as many vehicle types as Toyota. I doubt that they have anything as good as the Camry hybrid, if they make a Hilux equivalent then it wouldn’t be hard to do better than Toyota as they are having unacceptable problems with their diesels but people keep buying them because of there reputation I don’t know why, I wouldn’t.
@KongWaiKei yeah it seems like it.
Yep. Need a whole lot of ground clearance in the city for sure.
@@whatthe6532 yes you’re right, maybe not in the inner city but definitely in some of the nicer leafy areas there are often places like driveways where cars will scrape underneath.
All skoda are same shape . But puma is change beautiful puma is best
I don't get how you managed to get 8.3 liter average. I only get more than 7 liters if I idle for 5 minutes to defreeze the windshield and if I drive for only 5 kilometers in total... My average is in the range of 6 liters (manual though).
I'm averaging 6 liters .that's with start /stop engine off and in sport mode.
I would go Skoda every time, however fuel consumption numbers has got me thinking - it seems VAG real world fuel consumption is quite how compared to their claimed numbers?
I don't know how he got his 8.5 km/l
That's pretty high compare to mine which is 5.8 km/l. Consistently with the start/stop engine turned off.
@@julzyin 5.7 here with it turned on, 8,x is crazy, and not realistic, pulling a caravan I'm at 8-9L
All these cars I would love to entertain but they are not available in the US :(

Iam stuck between Kamiq and T-cross. Now waiting for Stonis
how can you choose the car with almost double the consumption of yaris (3.5lt/100 more) and questionable interior quality?
For me, the Toyota is the clear winner. Just by the gasoline prices of 1.44 (12-Apr-2021) the vehicles are already up at 30000 km. And especially the Toyota only emits half of the co2 emissions. where nowadays you should bet more than a plastic dashboard.
Nope wrong 😂 in Skoda you can install LPG system and you get to keep the warranty and everything. And the LPG consumption is equal to 3l per 100km 95 petrol.
Exactly what I’m considering. Kamiq or Cross.
Got the Cross and it's great but the engine is LOUD. It sounds like a lawn mower whenever I accelerate. Got it brand new butt sure if that's normal.
@@carz232 which one you got. I will go for the URBAN level AWD believe it’s really the best
@@michikotanaka81 I got the base petrol. It's really loud. Make sure to test drive before you choose.
Puma st line is best all day
Isn’t a digital cockpit available as an option for the Puma?
In Europe it is as standard. Along with lots of security features, keyless entry. Electric trunk door comes as standard with the ST-Line.
Yes is standard for St line in Europe,or pay 1400 e,for this option(digital cockpit&full led light)..sory for my englesh but i hop to understand😁
Yes, full digital cockpit on the Puma ST and ST V versions.
Great review Tom.
I agree the Kamiq looks impressive and I’m particularly keeping an eye on the 110TSI.
Did you test the headlights? I’m a bit sceptical about that particular design where the DRLs are more prominent and the headlights look like more of an afterthought.
Toyota is the best. 🤙
I want the Skoda, but can't get one.
I have a manual 155 St x Puma in the UK , it replaces a Seat Ateca FR Sport. The Puma is far more fun , economical and comfortable, boot big enough.
I love the design of the Skoda there is more space, comfortable soft touch plastics and a large boot space. The split design of the headlights and the grill would do it for me. Don’t like the Yaris cross at all but it does have a hybrid so that’s a positive. The Puma looks exactly like a Fiesta. A small hatchback.
Would it be to much to ask for a bit more car information in between all the adds 😳
Skoda wins in all but fuel economy
I would like to take a toyota, because at the moment we drive a Skoda Fabia and after 7000 km the gasolin pump was spoilt. I have never heard about such things in a Toyota. They have a zero mistake concept of building the cars. There is no problem of "Friday-cars", like in a half german Skoda !!!
UK Yaris Cross looks way better.. got center arm rest too!!!😁
Are we getting the Toyota Corolla Cross in Australia?
Yes. As early as 2022, 3rd quarter.
Hope they can keep the top trim Stonic under $33k (or around the price of the Cerato GT)
The 4 cylinder 1.5 Kamiq is the best option for refinement and performance. The design of Kamiq is spectacular compared to the other weirdly shaped objects. Toyota only sells cars because of its engine durability, but the hybrid technology is quite expensive as two powertrains are not affordable. Any day, Kamiq
The 4 cylinder 1.5 Kamiq are, in fact, only three...
@@fleanca2003 Get your facts straight. The 1.0 is a 3-banger while the 1.5 150hp one is a 4-banger.
@@3TimesFaster yes, you're right. But this review is about Skoda 1.0,

Real buyers have to consider operational cost, reliability, and resale value, car journalists do not! In Europe maybe you can get available and low-cost Skoda parts but in Australia, the number of parts will be rare and expensive.
My rating after driven all of them:
1. Puma 1,5 diesel manual
2. Puma 1.0 155bhp mHEV manual
3. Yaris Cross Hybrid 2WD eCVT
4. Kamiq 1.6 diesel DSG
5. Puma 1.0 125bhp mHEV auto
6. Kamiq 1.0 110bhp manual
Yaris cross👍❤️
Sports???? Sure they are utility vehicles but the only sport they will be involved in is competing for shopping centre car parks after picking the kids up from sport.
I dunno why SUV called "sports" despite they are not sporty at all. Before SUV term came out, my family called them "Off roader", but since most "SUV" can't handle heavy offroad like these cars, we call them "Crossover."
Kamiq has a DSG box which has been the source of numerous failures on all VW group cars. And,because it is considered a wear and tear item it only has a 6 month warranty.
Not very reassuring.
Yaris cross more reliable and covered by a much longer manufacturer's warranty.
C
I am surprised the ford came out as the more economical than the vw
💚ŠKODA KAMIQ💚
I would probably go for the Stonic, although I have some concerns about it's fuel consumption and power when using it for long distance driving.
Toyota is the most sensible and, dare I say, boring option out of the three because of their track record of reliability. Ford is a good option if you're living small and want something that most people don't have (despite the somewhat average design) and the Kamiq is the best for anyone who isn't too concerned about reliability (first Skoda to be made in India) and loves the European look.
The Kamiq is made in India? I thought all Skodas were Czech built
Australian spec made In Czech Republic
Do some research on Toyota recalls and you’ll find they are one of the worst for recalls... Not as reliable as people think
Toyota has always been the most reliable car.
Skoda is good, Ford is better but Toyota is the best!!
Can't wait for my Skoda LE to come, easily the best, Puma is ok and Yaris...yuk
Hyundai Venue or Kia Stonic
I see no reason to buy Puma or Yards Cross. The puma has no rear seat space and is absolutely claustrophobic. The yaris is underpowered and does not even offer front seat armrest.

Unfortunately SKODA Australia have let greed ruin the brands reputation. The factory increased prices by 3%. The local distributor decided to take advantage of Australians during pandemic and increased prices by more than 30% at the same time as reducing engine power and safety features and has refused to import the redesigned Fabia entry models
Australians are not stupid. So sad that greed has ruined this brand’s reputation
To my opinion, the outside design:
1 Ford Puma no doubt (but not in this ugly blue, the grey one is perfect)
2 Yaris Cross (but not in this ugly blue as well)
3 Skoda
And inside the Skoda is much better
Yaris cross
Hmmm. For people that are boring the Yaris Cross is perfect. For people that are fun the Puma is perfect. For people that want to appear upscale then the Skoda is perfect. The rear seat space would be an added bonus in the Skoda if you have lanky kids. I'm not a fan of the VW group soooo... massage seats....sign me up.
Lol your advice "for people that are boring" no one is gonna say mmm I think I'm boring I should get the Yaris Cross. I would say for people who prefer to have a very reliable car and have an ecological driving. I drive the small Yaris hybrid and it's actually fun to drive, trying to consume the least :) the silence of the car, the hybrid driving is totally different. You anticipate more and it's pleasant to see the results of it
You want luxury interior in budget cars? Nobody can beat a toyota mate
I understand how Kamiq has won. It does offer to allot of kit for the money. However, the Puma is a great little car as well. The Kamiq has the added advantage of coming in a manual as well!
The Puma can run on 91 as per the owner manual just it recommends 95 for optimal fuel consumption and performance. The Kamiq can use 91 octane fuel, but should only be used in an emergency. Both cars can run on E10.
The Yaris Cross I think it not worth the money. For few extra grand, by yourself a CH-R Hybrid or save some money and buy a Corolla Hybrid instead.
when ppl buy a toyota i dont think they care about the amenities. they just want it to go and go and go... forever
this is pointless as you don't cover all the cars. No Kia Sonic.
