You know Monty's whole mindset with designing his characters were so that they were easier to cosplay as, and if you see no one cosplaying any rwby designs in volume 4 and beyond that should say something.
There are some good outfits for cosplay, like V4 Weiss, but where the designs really started becoming too much for me was V6 onwards. Try cosplaying as V7 Weiss or Blake, you’ll look ridiculous.
I can believe that. I was able to put together a Neo cosplay almost entirely from stuff I already owned. The only thing that needed to be made was her jacket (and I bought a wig). Neo's new look? I have no idea how I'd cosplay that.
They honestly should have given Robin two designs, one for when she is being a freedom fighter, and another for when she's being a politician. It's absolutely ridiculous that every character wears one outfit all the time. I get that is for utility to some extent, but that is no excuse for characters that aren't actively fighting all the time
Yeah, I mean you'd think if you're running for council in one of the most PRESTIGIOUS KINGDOMS you wouldn't show up to important meetings looking like a homeless goblin, they should've gave her something at least SLIGHTLY formal
Or have them maid Marion character run for office because in the Robin Hood mythos Robinhood is a disgraced nobleman and can't come back however his lady maid Marion has some political power
I’m pretty sure it’s not here because tbh Summer Rose Isn’t an important character. Sure like she’s the main characters dead mom but like she doesn’t have much going for her other than one scene that she looked bad in if she shows up again I would redesign her entirely
Fr it's like Summer conceived Ruby all by herself cus as biology as my witness Tai is seen nowhere on Ruby, same with Yang (except for having Ravens red eyes and maybe untamable hair)
I think Mercury's eye color is actually a cool concept even if RT will do nothing with it. Silver Eye warriors, as provided with proof and even Maria outright saying it, draw their powers from the love of those around them. In this case, Mercury doesn't have anyone who he loves. His father was abusive and we have no idea about his mother or if he has any siblings. The only true relationship ties he has is Emerald, but it's on a more coworker level. The idea that a silver eyed warrior cannot even use them because they have no love is interesting and would make a good character arc for Mercury.
"Yeah, background characters with one or two lines look bad, but let's keep the focus on characters that matter." Damn, how's T-shirt guy ever going to recover?
"Mercury''s design would be perfectly fine as a background character...but he isn't." That...felt oddly nice? The tone was meant for this serious takedown at the end but it became this compliment? I dunnow, maybe it's just the nicest thing I've heard of anyone say anything about Mercury ever.
Wait, how r U gonna put some form of colour on Mercury when he has been raised in a life of no colour. Also calling Mercury's vale costume boring is actually a compliment. This is due to the fact that he's an assassin. In actuality, an assassin would actually like to use the same boring colour scheme in their clothes to blend in
I honestly think criticizing Mercury's outfit for not having any popping colors is kind of dumb. It makes no sense to put vibrant colors on him, him being all grey and black actually makes sense for him. No matter how "boring" it is.
If you want to see some mercury complements go to the “emerald and mercury vs coco and yaysuhashi” and “yang vs mercury” videos. Just a bunch of people telling everyone how badass he is
If I could only say one thing to the RWBY designers it would be: your show is about COLOUR. it’s a massively central theme to absolutely every aesthetic element. It’s written into the character creation rules. The show is an acronym for Red, White, Black, Yellow. In-universe, almost everyone is named after a colour AND they all have a specific colour associated with their aura and semblances. So why on earth do we get terrible colour theory like Robyn’s outfit or Ruby’s Mistral outfit or that random team that JNPR fought in Vol 3?? Seriously, if you can’t think of anything else, just slap a primary colour and a secondary colour onto a neutral background and call it a day. You know what colour Robyn’s aura is? Purple. It’s purple. That’s the colour of her eyes and the colour of her semblance. Not green, not red - purple. It’s like Tyrian all over again - but at least Tyrian’s outfit was completely neutral so they could add whatever colour they wanted and it didn’t clash.
@@TheXBladeist I adore the show and today’s episode was definitely my favourite episode of the entire series but GOD sometimes the show creators don’t understand their own show. Colour theory: out the window half the time Fight scenes: they clearly did not understand that Montys fight style was absolutely integral to the show when they opened V4 with the godawful Rock Geist and Blake + Sun v Water Grimm fights. Magic/Maidens/Aura/Semblances: literally everything that a Maiden can do could be accomplished by giving Weiss or Glynda enough dust crystals. And don’t forget, Ruby transforming into a stream of independent rose petals with enough speed to create a wind tunnel is not magic, but seeing Raven transforming into a normal raven is. Despite that illusion semblances exist. Fiona has a personal pocket dimension ffs. I am going to balance this by saying V8 has been phenomenal, with fantastic pacing, great worldbuilding, and excellent characterisation especially for Ironwood, Cinder, Ren, Nora, and Penny. The Grimm have been terrifying, ironwood’s fall from grace has been excellently written and performed, and the visuals are amazing. The explosion today?? The red Cinder flashbacks?? The terror on Emerald’s face when she faces Salem?? This is RWBY at its best. Truly.
@@lucasrobin2788 Yeah, it feels like they don't take it seriously half the time. As someone who really enjoys colour theory, I'd love for the show to be more careful of how they handle it, but alas. Yeah, I remember that one weird headbutt in the ace ops fight and laugh every time. Well, thats kinda what happens when you make your show without givinh much thought to the rules and all that. I still distinctively remember when Yang punched that guy and he pinballed his way out of the store. It was meant to be comedic, but later was explained he didn't even have a rubber semblance to bounce like that. I've not been watching since the subscritiption is too much in my country's money, but I'm glad to hear thats the case!
The thing that KILLS ME about the weiss atlas design is that this is the arc where she's supposed to be breaking away from her good girl mold, but instead of giving her a ripped skirt and shoulders with wild hair(which would be really good for when we have to take her more seriously) she looks like a shitty bootleg disney princess where some of the parts came in too big. They also gave her a tanky looking design for the fastest and most graceful character--as well as in the arc where she was supposed to be the least like a tank, she was supposed to be a spear not someone to rely on.
Cinder's lack of neck covering is by far the most damning indictment on their claims to long term planning, too. It not only looks bad- it actively undermines plot and characterization.
I love the fact that your profile pic is Gendo and your name is "A stereotypical gamer" implying that your stereotypical gamers are supposed to be as violent and scheming as him.
I hate hate HATE Neo Atlas design. So they are going to Atlas, the cold region and going into the shadows to avoid the heroes and Salem. What to wear? Almost nothing with the biggest boob window ever all for fan service.
Doesn't even go well with her fighting style with the large coat thing. And her hair gets lost in the coat. Her hair is just a big spiky mass unlike the cute short wavy hair she had. and the mint green eyeshadow is just clashing with her other colours.
If I had ONLY one pick: Robyn, for the clear lack of creativity. She is based from Robinhood which could lead to so many cool designs for the "chaotic good rouge" character but they instead went for whatever she is wearing and none of the cool elements of her fairytale to be seen. Worst of all she is important to the plot so we can't just ignore her presence
You can’t even tell what’s she based on until you hear her name, you can’t even go “Oh that’s why they did that” For the design, her design pissed me off the most and made me hate her even more......
Honestly I wouldn't have even minded if the rest of her companions stayed the same, but the fact they were that lazy with her outfit design is such a shame. Even just a.. idk.. forest green jacket and boots would of done something.
One of my biggest issues with her design (other than that the colors are really ugly to look at) is that they didn't give Robin Hood a hood. I can understand if the hairstyle of the character wouldn't allow for it, but c'mon. She doesn't have to wear it. Heck, Ruby doesn't wear hers at all minus the beginning of Volume 8 and she still has one. How did they screw that up? Edit: I just now realized she did have a hood, but I couldn't tell until I saw the concept art. You'd imagine it'd be easier to see, perhaps being green? Heck, I thought she was just wearing an ugly brown scarf. Ruby's hood is a bright red. I can actually see it on her model. It stands out. Robyn's hood doesn't.
@@thenintendnub64 Yeah either changing the color or giving her a different short hairstyle to make the cape a much more important element on her design would have been good
maybe, the color might be monotonous (works for me) but the armor in his arms does make sense I mean he has advanced leg prosthetics made of metal he doesnt need armor there. And he actually does use his arms for punching or blocking (more blocking), plus he uses martial arts (specializing in kicks) probably if he blocks without armor his aura would get damage. So in my opinion the armor is justified
Also, Mercury's 'boring' costume that has colours that don't make him stand out make sense; he is an assassin. He'd want to be the character that blends in most with the background for espionage and assassinations, making his costume actually making sense
Maybe just me but it would’ve been better if Weiss cut her hair instead of Blake. It could represent her rebelling against her daddy and what not. Plus she does look cute.
I think I remember her concept art for v7 showed that they did consider cutting her hair short and it actually looked really good. It really emphasized her rebelling against her father, ditching the heiress look, and becoming her own person.
Hopefully Blake will ditch the white jacket for Vacuo... Seeing as Vacuo would be the third setting where white jacket doesn't work... Too hot for her home, too cold for Atlas, and too hot for Vacuo.
Honestly Blake should wear something predominantly white for Vacuo. The weather there is hot, and light, which generates heat, travels more slowly through dark colors which means the heat will linger on your body for a longer period. Furthermore, amaryllis belladonna is a whitish pink flower. So thematic accuracy as well when it comes to her surname
I'm not the biggest fan of Vol7 Weiss, but I REALLY feel Vol7 blake is honestly the worst of the redesigns. It doesn't look anything like Blake, the zippers are awful, the colors doesnt work on her. All of it just doesnt work out. At least Weiss still has a lot of white, and kinda resembles what she looked like before. It just..it doesnt look good it's awful....
One of the things I hate the most about Nora's new designs is that they've gotten rid of the harness/girdle for her, which looked *great* because it was suggestive that she was physically powerful in a subtle way. It looked like a weightlifters harness in some ways, which is used to try and prevent herniation while lifting stuff. It also served as a callback to her Mythological inspiration: Thor, who wore the belt Megingjord (the "Power-belt") which was supposed to enhance his strength. Furthermore her original design at least looked *girly* which was part of her character too. I'd have loved to see the design develop so that the harness was adapted to deliver the electricity her semblance uses, or help store and absorb what she produces (cause she is supposed to be able to produce electricity). I feel like she has steadily gone downhill with her designs to the point where she is just "kingdom hearts" now and doesn't even look like she belongs in the same series as the rest of the characters. Ren on the other hand has improved in quality, I always associate him mentally with a dragonfly, and his image looks great for it.
"Weiss' big sis suddenly got really into Bionicle" You meant to make that sound like a bad thing but all you did was make me like her new design more. My Bionicle bias is problematic.
ah, it's not just me then :-) for real though, I quite like Winter's design, cluttered armor and all. I interpreted it as functioning as both protection and a sort of brace since she's been pushed back into field before she could fully recover from the fight last finale. and I like that the armor's mostly navy and red covering her outfit that's more in line with her and her family line- militaristic, darker armor enveloping her lighter, more noble looking self.
@@nandyk.2026 Her amor is near pointless, most of it doesnt even protect any important parts of her body and if she wanted to bend down her ribcage gets pierced by the armor pieces on her chest. I like this whole military, conservative, strict vibe she's got going on, but with all the other ace ops and ironwood with her, she stands out in a bad way. This armor seems to want to restrict her of movement instead of actually protecting her.
@@supersparrowJ That's the point. An assassin isn't meant to draw too much attention to themselves when carrying out espionage and assassinations, something Mercury specializes in as an assassin
@@foam3132 stupid ass reason, this show is bordering on wuxia with how over the top the action is, but no, we're pulling "but muh realism"? Fuck realism. Give Mercury powers of invisibility.
@@KOTEBANAROT Mercury doesn't have a semblance. But still, personally, I like his vale outfit from volumes 2 and 3. From volume 4 to 6 it was fine but his volume 8 outfit is epic.
On the topic of Robyn, I think I subconsciously believed she was going to be a villain pretending to be a defender of the people due to her rather dark colour palette.
The chinese RWBY outfit are my favorite one's, I wish that they were used in the show. Especially the Adams design that made him look like a boss from Yakuza.
Same, I love Weiss' chinese design more than V7 Weiss, you know you didn't do a great job by designing your character's outifts if fans loves fan-outfits more than the original
After a certain point, RT realized that they had accidentally been giving side characters grey eyes, which were so close in color to Ruby's eyes, that people were getting confused. So, later on, they added these weird white spots in the lower half of the iris of Silver Eyed Warriors' eyes so that you can see who has silver eyes, and who has grey eyes. But it's so subtle you can barely tell, and this is a pretty obscure fact. So mission failed I guess. Also minor Volume 8 and regular Volume 4 spoilers ahead for my Ren design rant. But I don't know how Ren's Atlas outfit didn't at least make the honorable mentions though. It's a fashion catastrophe. They just took his perfectly good, dare I say great, design from Volume 4, and ruined it. Remove the pink faded sleeves, and give him a long black glove on one side, and some kind of weird shoulder pad-sleeve thing on the other side, with a clunky strap crossing his torso and ruining the lines left over from the Volume 4 design. And remember volume 4? We remember volume 4. Let's put the dagger from Volume 4 on this shoulder pad, where Ren is going to ignore it for 2 volumes. Let's give a character a weapon that's easily grabbable by another character. This knife, for some reason, can actually hurt the Nuckelavee, when Jaune's upgraded super sword can't. So, let's not try to use it on this new super-grimm that grabbed our friend. And let's also keep it in an accessible spot so that a smart opponent can take it away from me and stab me with it. Yeah, that makes sense. The only decent change is that they turned his white pants into some kind of white body suit, which is subtle enough that you don't really notice it because most of the affected areas are covered from the leftovers of the Volume 4 design, which got less interesting by having the coat tails removed. Then, when you look closely, you notice the bright-ass red on his boots. It does nothing, and when you notice it, it's really ugly. Just overall horrid design.
14:31 okay I'm Malaysian and I can confirm that if someone wear like that, everyone will look at him weirdly. Also, it's bloody hot here. Why the fur coats? It's not like in Cameron Highlands where it's colder. And the fabric looks hot that I am surprised Ghira didn't sweat or feeling fatigue wearing it. Another thing, why all the dark colours? Most of us here wear light colours and slightly dark colours to feel colder. Unless it's rainy season, we don't wear such dark colours. And that armour thing sucks. Our armour style looks so different than that. I seriously want to redesign Ghira now because it looks like he's wearing the wrong outfit for the wrong location.
I get your points about Cinder's outfit and you make a good case, but I wanted to make one random interjection. I think the bandages are supposed to be a sarashi: a long strip of cloth, usually thick cotton, wrapped tightly around the midriff up to the chest. Historically worn under kimono both by samurai (to resist injury) and by women (for more "obvious" reasons, particularly in eras when a slim figure was considered fashionable), its association with warriors has made it a near-universal symbol of toughness in Japan. It still doesn't look very good on her though because it doesn't fit the rest of her usual aesthetics and general theme. Cinder isn't a samurai or martial artist and is not themed with traditional Japanese fashion, so it does end up seeming pointless and out of place on her even with the knowledge that it's a real thing. Really this comment is just me sharing random trivia on a whim.
To compare, Rinkah from Fire Emblem Fates wears bandages around her chest in a similar fashion, but it works with her since it fits her visual aesthetic and the location she's connected to.
Yeah, it's like they made the outfits then forget the zippers and added them randomly. At least Final Fantasy & Kingdom hearts are mind with care in made than 'let's make some money of these'
@@haveagoodday7021 I'm just saying that Weiss now looks more like Artoria than well Weiss. Although, at least V7 Weiss looks decent enough compared to her teammates V7 designs. Also, on the topic of Fate and RWBY, why are all the crossovers that have Jaune in a major role have him connected to Artoria in some way? His inspiration was Jeanne d'Arc, he should be connected to HER in some way not Artoria. Of all the crossovers on FFnet own TWO had a Jeanne connection instead of Artoria and both of them were Jalters.
Weiss' design actually changed the way she fights. If you look at Weiss design, it is very close to stereotypical "ice sorceress" rather than "graceful figure skater". This change turned her sword into what is basically now a magical wand/staff, and her main form of attacking is basically just casting spells using her seemingly limitless surplus of dust she should no longer have access to.
What I really hate about Blake's design is that it puts so much emphasis on her breasts for some reason. For Yang it makes sense, since she is known for being "top heavy" but I don't understand why they needlessly put all these patterns that accentuate her chest. The zipper is in the middle of her breasts, her weird black catsuit and coat form a love heart shape with her breasts and the bluish-grey also accents her breasts. WHY?!?
I'd actually go totally in the other direction for Ghira's design. The royal purple and shoulder regalia make him look like a king, while the offset look of his sleeves hints that even for someone in that position he hasn't had a reason to present himself to the public in a while, which is right where he is when he's introduced. Then, when he rips that off, he looks overall more like the bestial fighter that he is, with the belt making him look like a champion wrestler.
- Adams new design is super unappealing. Whether we love or hate him, can we at least agree his new outfit was a massive downgrade? They really had no idea what to do with him and made him look so pathetic. - Weiss’ V4 outfit is a massive disappointment because it looks really pretty in Ein Lee’s promo art but in the show she looks sickly. Her hair lost the white vibrancy and has a weird blue tint in it and makes her look less like character whose supposed to represent white. And other than the fact that her outfit isn’t suited for combat, the colors on it look ugly. Instead of a sparkling blue ballerina dress, it’s some sickly blue gray outfit with no shine to it at all. I hate it. - I’m really disappointed with all the Atlas outfits because they lack a winter feel. There’s great fan art done by so many artists that put them in winter outfits. My favorites are the variety that Shana340 did for Team RWBY and JNR. They all look really good and look perfect for not only representing each of the characters but also the cold climate of Atlas. I don’t know if Ein Lee was rushed to do the Atlas outfits or if she was forced to do them a certain way but I have not liked how some characters have looked in recent volumes. They lose a piece of them that make them who they are and lose any wow factor. I hope they look better in the future because these current outfits aren’t doing it for me.
I agree with everything except weiss. Her clotes were like that on purpose. She was stuck in her house, no scape at all. She waring greys is a way of showing how she is under control now. And it wasnt fitting for fighting because....she was on her house, what was she gonna fight? Lmaoo
@@iatemycat5320 Considering Yang's able to get a new outfit, I would have liked Weiss to switch out from that outfit. She could have swapped that outfit when she was sneaking out. And the blue gray is all over Weiss. They even switched her hair back to white once they realized their mistake. And speaking of her hair, the design also forgets one detail. Monty said Weiss' ponytail was on the side because it was in reference to her defying her father. And in her party outfit concept art, the ponytail is straight. But in the show it's sideways all the time. I just don't think they thought through Weiss' look at all.
A lot of the designs now just seem a little boring and confusing. Like why does yang have this weird zipper thing on her leg for her winter outfit? Like seriously you are going to freeze
Weiss' Atlas look makes me think the designers secretly hate the animators and want to make their jobs miserable. Like, "let's see how many layers we can add before she's basically rooted to the spot, spamming dust and summons."
Robyn gets one of the worst outfits for me. Barely any of her main color, way too many lines so I can't focus on one thing, plus she just looks like one blob of barf grouped to form a "heroic woman", plus she is already on my nerves so it's made worse.
Honestly I’m not even sure what her main color is supposed to be. Apparently a character representing a certain color isn’t always mandatory. But you would think a freedom fighter in this series would have her outfit centered around a main color because the whole color wars concept is presenting throughout the show and is supposed to represent freedom and freedom of expression. If color wasn’t going to be a main focus of some of the new characters okay, but there are some characters like Robyn that would be very suited for the color representation character design theme.
they really should've gave Blake a really fluffy white jacket, with a black fur collar. so that it can; A) keep her warm B) go with her theme of cats because it can look like cat fur C) look really freaking cool
It’s interesting hearing someone rant on issues that I personally don’t see. I’m DEFINITELY not an expert on any of character design stuff or color theory which is probably why I don’t mind. I just think it’s neat to see a new look. People talk about how good the original looks were and I’m like, they were okay I guess, and there’s no design I hate.
I mean, she is a bandit, so it makes sense that her outfit would look awful. She probably made it by grabbing the most intact stuff that fit her that was looted on the last raid. Im just surprised she doesnt look even worse given how vibrant the clothes in RWBY are.
You know, in retrospect, it might have been an interesting character trait for Ruby to be into goth fashion as well as weapons. Not only does it sound like the kind of thing that the little sister of Yang "don't touch my hair" Xiaolong might be into, but you don't dress like Season 1 Ruby unless you were deliberately chasing that aesthetic. Heck, combined with the whole Combat Skirts thing, it could have been a jumping off point for some fun sidestories with Weiss and maybe also Blake
Fun/stupid thing about Ruby's Mistral outfit: I actually used it as an inspiration for the outfit for a character I created, yet I changed a lot of things to improve it better for the character: No belts in any way Less puffy sleeves Long skirt No boob-window More rounded color pallete + fixed skin color to make sure the shirt and skin don't mix So yeah, they could, in theory, do an outfit that has the elements the Mistral desing has (corset, the rose pattern in the thigh-highs, more warm elements rather than pure black-red), but they dropped the ball with the ammount of stuff they tried to put in Ruby in an attemp to make her more visually intresting
The way they had Winter's armor still on her arm in the hospital made me think she'd gotten a prosthetic at the time of first watch. I was like "are we not gonna address this?"
15:40 Damn, I've been watching this show for years and seen Volumes 4-6 multiple times, and legit never knew that Ruby wore a backpack in this design. Could never even see it 😐
The only Yang outfit I've ever liked was her Huntress outfit from Volume 2. I hope that we get a new Yang outfit with that colour palette and a less top heavy design. I like the idea of Yang in a jacket, but her model has narrow hips/a large bust, so the scarfs and jackets only make her look super unbalanced.
@Twiins iink So apparently, here's the madness at 18:46 Who else wears bright white, poofy sleeves, has a Victorian-style boob window, and wears a backpack? Penny. Who also ties a piece of red cloth with a single clip? Pyrrha. Ruby, in-universe is mourning Penny and Pyrrha by incorporating their motifs into her outfit. She is paying tribute to their deaths so that a part of them lives on in her clothes. Girl's artistically confused, but at least she has the spirit.
I agree with everything you said about Ruby’s mistral outfit. It’s terrible. And that scene was very ugly, especially with the god awful high pitched voice they made Lindsey do for the volume
Is it bad that I would argue that vol 7 is even worse...Ruby just looks sick because the sleeves are an awful color that clashes with her skin. Too many belts. They got rid of the ripped cape, which to me told a story that she’s gone through some hardships. Although there’s no boob window they changed the color of her shirt there for no reason and it always looks like the corset is falling off her.
i haven't really kept up with RWBY since monty died but i felt the redesign was fine for the most part. it keeps her silhouette (which can't be said for her fellow teammates especially now) and gives her a more "weathered" look from her original design. i'd probably change the shirt color to either a grey or black and ditch the cleavage window since it looks weird with her corset vest. that said i don't like her current design which is basically just an edgy version of this.
I know this video is old but I actually did cosplay Ruby’s Mistral outfit once. The belts were nearly impossible to secure, I couldn’t wear the thigh highs at all, and the half shirt piece with the chest window was uncomfortable. Too tight on my neck, too restricting at my arm pits. I could hardly move my wrists because of the cuff pieces at the ends of the flared sleeves. The entire costume hurt to walk around in and was incredibly cumbersome and hot to wear. Trying to run around in this costume would have killed me. And nearly did, I suffered symptoms of heat stroke in it at a convention and the zipper on the corset *broke* when I tried to take it off in the bathroom. In short: you’re 100% right, its a nightmare to cosplay.
I assumed Winter’s, “armor” was like support. The part on her spine made me think that she needs this armor to be able to operate without crumbling like a nature valley bar. I never really noticed the clutter tbh.
Blake’s short hair style looks like she got gum stuck in it and they had to lop it all off, and now it’s at that weird awkward length where you can’t really do anything with it.
As much as I agree that Ghiras design isn't amazing, the stomach stomach armour makes sense to me just cuz cats have the natural instinct to protect there stomachs cuz they are their most vulnerable areas of their body. So even if it isn't the best design I can appreciate that detail :D
9:45 thats exactly how my hair is tied when i go to volleyball wtf 😂😭😭 also, for cinder, i agree that shit is UGGGLLYYYY but i think they were trying to mimick the way simon & kamina wear bandages from gurren lagann. if you look them up you can tell theres an attempt, but of course simon & kamina do the look waaaay better
It also has stupid leg zippers. The zippers that start from the top of her legs and end at her ankles. Then she has a collar zipper that also ends shortly. There seems to be no way for her to actually get in or out of that weird catsuit thingy.
@@gokbay3057 Props to the mad lad who, in universe, made that outfit. That had to have been the weirdest request. “Hi I need a new super suit, I sketched out what I’d like it to look like.” “Great I’ll get right on that...miss am I reading this correctly? This says you want zippers in the sleeves?” “Yes, and the legs, also reverse the way the zipper in the front goes. I want to zip down my jacket.” “Fucking what!?”
Honestly same. When I first saw it I was like “okay the color placement is cool,” and didn’t realize that the lines down her legs were zippers, and thought they were grey stripes like in the shorts from her volume 1 outfit. Then I realized they were zippers, then I realized there were knee pads and zippers, and now I’m just waiting for the characters to change their outfits again.
@@KikiCatMeow honestly I do like the idea of the outfits, and Ruby and Yangs full outfits, but Blake and Weiss’s outfits would look better with some tweaking. As far as when they’ll change their outfits again, it seems like they’re put together in order to be altered, like we saw in I think volume 4-6 where their outfits would be altered every now and then. I can see Weiss maybe taking the gloves and jacket off, maybe having like cool sleeves or wrist things underneath to keep a consistency. Maybe Ruby will keep everything except the gray shirt. Yang maybe she keeps the overalls but removes the coat, or both the coat and her leg zip things (in the occasion the zippers were placed so the outfit can be worn in multiple climates). As far as Blake goes, I don’t know how the outfit would be altered to make it look more balanced but also suit the warmer climate. Her outfit seems to work color and style wise, except for the excessive zippers, knee pads attached boots, and what seems to be the texture, but color and general dimensions seem good. It might not look balanced if she took the coat off, and it would look kind of weird if she had just a catsuit with the boots attached. Maybe the zippers do something? Like the jacket can unzipper in the front and roll up the sleeves to look less crowded, the legs zip up or something to make her wear shorts or capris, and then ditch the kneepads? This is assuming that altering the outfits are a part of the plan for next volume considering the new climate, and also considering the fact they probably won’t be able to get new clothes in the middle of no where.
There's one point I'll disagree on. When you said Ruby mistral is hard to animate I do agree in show/volume sense for some reason however to this day I still believe the vol4 trailer is the best we've seen Ruby fight and that's animated in the mistral design. So they proved they can but they don't for some reason. Thanks for the video
7:49 Fun fact about Lulu's skirt: Apparently Nomura designed it that way to test the CG animators (rendering something like that with late 90s tech was a challenge and a half). It's like the reason she's rarely depicted in the CG scenes. All those belts would fry the computer!
I may actually have an explanation for Mercury's armor. He needs to keep his feet light to attack so he can't weigh them down with armor. He also needs some way to defend his upper body which is why he has all his armor on his arms
Actually Sun's design works out pretty well. It makes sense for the type of character that he is and doesn't look bad in places like Vale and Menagerie. If he was in Atlas however than yeah, it wouldn't look great.
@@ryancarson6962 Ty. Despite some of these costumes don't look good in some people's opinion, they make sense linking to ones character, like how Mercury's costume is boring on purpose due to him being an assassin
the volume 7 still of Blake Smiling for that selfie will haunt me in my nightmares. Mercury's atlas look was for being on the whale and then going to the desert, at no point did he use it in atlas.
Thank god I'm not the only person who found the stills of Blake and Yang in the selfie scene to be unsettling Mouths are DEFINITELY not one of CRWBY's strong suits
Fun Fact about Lulu's design: She was designed as challenge from the FMV team to make a character they wouldnt animate. Other than he first FMV scene, all other FMV shots are from the waist up
13:02 I just realized that his big ass belt buckle thing isn't attached to anything at all, like, there's no belt, it can't be attached to his waist wrap, it's just hanging there... menacingly
Damn, you went hard on Tournament Cinder. I felt that her character silhouette being drastically different went with the fact that it was a disguise.Plus I think her design looked cool, Bandage Diapie and all.
Really liked the vid! I always love hearing you talk about designs, its so much fun :) Off the top of my head, one that you didn't mention, Neo's volume 6 design easily one of my least favourite. Theres way too much happening on her design, and it's a shame because her first outfit was so classy. The 'jacket' looks so bad because her sleeves aren't even attached to it; so technically its not even a jacket its just a tank top with a cut out for the crop top. the straps on her shoulders feel so unnessasary, especially the back of it where its a cross?? why even put that there if you're going to give her hair more volume anyways? and white pants always makes me rage, but white pants strapped to shoes just look so weird, like hey fam? just have pants tucked into boots like why is the ankle cross strap necessary? Also the poofy sleeves are also just making her look more top heavy. ALSO: shes based off of neopolitan ice cream but she has ZERO brown on her anymore. All of her browns have been turned into black. lmao sorry, rant over. I really miss neo looking classy ;-;
One of the most infuriating things to me about their use of models in volumes 4 and onward is how they can't be bothered to edit the models when they're sleeping or injured. Remember in Volume 1 where all the main cast had PJ models that got used once (Some were used 0 times like Pyrrha but they still made it)? Like they just sleep in their armor, it's really frustrating seeing them get out of bed with all of that shit still on, like they all have to be gross. Nora in V8 is injured and just thrown into bed with some random bandages but they left all of her lower half the same. All the electricity is gonna be coming out of where she's grounded more then likely so I guess her boots are just welded to her feet at this point. They tried once to make "Atlas Uniforms" that they used once on the main cast and it was the laziest ugly shit I've seen. There was no personality or character in the designs, not a single shred of making them unique to the character that is going to be wearing it. Like let Blake wear one that's more loose fitting and is easy for her to move around in since she's a cat and wouldn't like being restricted. Why can't Yang rip the sleeves off of hers so it's more her style. Why are they all boring and disgustingly bland color? Like everything from head to toe is the exact same for them (They couldn't even give them different socks/have some of them be barefoot as a small call out to their character? All of them had to take the exact same shit from the Atlas vault). I wish they'd put less effort into insane edgelord redesigns every few volumes and instead focused on more simple designs that actually told us more about the characters and their personalities through what they wore. Let them wear different stuff then their armor when they're supposed to be out having a good time. Why would Blake and Yang where the exact same shit they wear all the time out dancing or have Ruby, Nora, and Ren wear there usual stuff to a casual celebration party? Small things like that go a long way and it astounds me that none of the writers/designers have something that basic down. OG designs were fire, Monty absolutely knew what was up.
As far as Robyn goes, I just wish she wore a hood more lmao. That would at least make her more mysterious. But her ponytail is too high for that😭 Also I never thought about that about her neck and I saw the episode. But it’s weird cause she has no physical scars there from that event, right? Also weird that she never messes with that area, leading us to believe there’s no actual wounds from her past.🤔
Cinder having some sort of PTSD from the electric collar would've been great, because that's BOUND to fuck you up more than just "I hate everyone" It didn't have to be a huge thing like Yang, just something subtle
@@KikiCatMeow just anything for us to use to tie in this pain. Because technically we still don’t even know why she’s the way she is. We don’t even know when she met Salem so it’s not a full backstory.
God, most of these designs were so underwhelming I forgot about them. I totally forgot about vernal and her lame design. I even forgot about Robyn’s and Weiss’ current designs, that’s how uninteresting they are.
Ya know...I never paid attention to Cinder's design and now...I can't un-see it. Blake and Weiss imo are the worst offenders. Yeah Yang and Nora too. I like simple Mercury but I can see he made it. I didn't notice the ways they changed Merc like that but i don't like his most recent look.
For Yang, I like her UPS outfit. Considering how her Volume 5-6 was utter shit, it was a step in the right direction. I wish they drew inspiration from her Hunter outfit from Volume 2.
I can’t believe it never occurred to me that Mercury also has silver eyes holy fuck! I feel like that says a lot about how story ideas are handled in RWBY
I am not sure if this is true but I saw a comment about someone saying some time ago that Monty wanted designs that fans could cosplay easily - that was possible with volume 1 designs but as a cosplayer who cosplayed Ruby Volume 1 AND Ruby Volume 4... I can tell you that there was a really BIG difference between the two outfits. I was so annoyed about all this stupid belts she was carrying in her volume 4 outfit. Everything was moving (and even if you attach belts to your clothes, its still annoying how they rub against your clothes). I know, anime is anime but come on... the belts dont make any sense!! why are u wearing belts wrapped around your arms which are connected with a belt that is on your back which is then connected to your backbag...wth man... even if you are trying to make everything stay in place, you wont be able to get that thing off when you need to move quick.
Great work on both top 10 design videos! I have my disagreements here and there, but you still did a good job of not holding back criticism while still staying civil. I thought it would be a good idea for someone to try to find the "non credited" designs for both so I tried my best to use the artists styles to determine: Adam (V1-3) - Monty (he mentioned at an art panel a long time ago that his design was something he had in his mind for a while) Adam (V5-6) - Erin Winn Vernal - Erin Winn Robyn - Either Larissa Angus or Patrick Rodriguez (Also, I think Ein Lee did the top half of Emerald's first outfit and Patrick did the bottom cause of Ein's sketchier linework in her old concept art)
I hate Weiss' Atlas design. I hate her braid. I hate her outfit. I hate the color placement Weiss' Atlas design look like a bootleg Artoria from Type-Moon's Fate series.
I don't like the Happy Huntresses designs. They look more uniform than the Ace Ops, and I can't name any unique traits about their clothes besides color and size off the top of my head because most of their clothes designs feel like generic and blander versions of Robyn. It's even worse that 3 of them use the exact same weapons and none of them have used any combat oriented semblances, as it feels like they have identical fighting styles, and look completely interchangeable in combat because they have no unique fighting skills. They don't even appear to have personalized weapons, in a show where cool weapon designs and unique fighting styles are one of the focus points of character designs. It's like they decided to just throw out these random characters and only fleshed them out just enough to not make them look like clones of each other, but not enough to make them look like they're more than just background characters. It just makes me question why they even bothered stopping at 4 Happy Huntresses, and didn't just go the route of giving Robyn a small army of followers that use identical weapons because they don't have the training and resources from Atlas.
I deleted the pinned comment because people kept trying to fight with me. I'm so tired of feeling like this. It's just a funny top 10 video.

It do be like that.
You know Monty's whole mindset with designing his characters were so that they were easier to cosplay as, and if you see no one cosplaying any rwby designs in volume 4 and beyond that should say something.
THATS WHAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST!!! That was the point of their clothes and they just throw it out of the window

Yeah, I mean you'd think if you're running for council in one of the most PRESTIGIOUS KINGDOMS you wouldn't show up to important meetings looking like a homeless goblin, they should've gave her something at least SLIGHTLY formal

For a character who is supposed to be so important, her outfit was underwhelming.
I’m pretty sure it’s not here because tbh Summer Rose Isn’t an important character. Sure like she’s the main characters dead mom but like she doesn’t have much going for her other than one scene that she looked bad in if she shows up again I would redesign her entirely

@@tableswithoutchairs1168 and they ain't wrong.
I love how passionately frustrated you are.
A shame the folks at the show know naught of color theory.
@@TheXBladeist I adore the show and today’s episode was definitely my favourite episode of the entire series but GOD sometimes the show creators don’t understand their own show.
Colour theory: out the window half the time
Fight scenes: they clearly did not understand that Montys fight style was absolutely integral to the show when they opened V4 with the godawful Rock Geist and Blake + Sun v Water Grimm fights.
I feel like after volume 3/4 they just lose that color idea. Like seriously they literally put Blake in so much white and it kills me.
I know right? Lincoln green was right there for Robyn, free of charge. Like come on.
She isn't a shitty bootleg Disney Princess, she looks like a shitty bootleg Artoria (Saber Class) but without armor.
I don't know why but hearing Allison say, with so much suppressed rage, "stupid... bandage shirt!" always gets me

Cinder's lack of neck covering is by far the most damning indictment on their claims to long term planning, too. It not only looks bad- it actively undermines plot and characterization.

They have to show as much cleavage as possible even if it doesn't make sense
Doesn't RT hate fanservice now? XD
Its also why i hate Hazel's Atlas design.
I mean, look at him! That outfit fits well for Vacuo!
I hate Neos new design. Everything about it makes me so mad. Especially her shoes that clipped to her pants.
@@exloster9624 Yeah pretty much all of them have long coat, long coats aren’t the only coat that can help you with the cold!
@@thenintendnub64 Yeah either changing the color or giving her a different short hairstyle to make the cape a much more important element on her design would have been good
I feel like Mercury’s design should have had more focus on his legs
Agreed. If he’s a kicker then his thing is L E G G
maybe, the color might be monotonous (works for me) but the armor in his arms does make sense I mean he has advanced leg prosthetics made of metal he doesnt need armor there.

I think I remember her concept art for v7 showed that they did consider cutting her hair short and it actually looked really good. It really emphasized her rebelling against her father, ditching the heiress look, and becoming her own person.
"Color Theory? Bitch! I dont know who that is!!" I'm waiting for the t-shirt
Hopefully Blake will ditch the white jacket for Vacuo... Seeing as Vacuo would be the third setting where white jacket doesn't work... Too hot for her home, too cold for Atlas, and too hot for Vacuo.

@@StoogesFan But if her main color isn't black anymore, than it isn't Bumblebee, right?
Honestly Blake should wear something predominantly white for Vacuo. The weather there is hot, and light, which generates heat, travels more slowly through dark colors which means the heat will linger on your body for a longer period. Furthermore, amaryllis belladonna is a whitish pink flower. So thematic accuracy as well when it comes to her surname
@@maiseree1511 I'm not saying she shouldn't still have white... Just not a jacket. I know that lighter colors help shield you from the sun's heat.

My Bionicle bias is problematic.
ah, it's not just me then :-)
for real though, I quite like Winter's design, cluttered armor and all.

I just looked up the Chinese rwby designs and I have to admit they are pretty cool
The oops all inconsistencies and the hidden in the back where it belongs killed me thank you for this
14:31 okay I'm Malaysian and I can confirm that if someone wear like that, everyone will look at him weirdly.

Fans: she looks great woth full black outfit... I hope keep it that way.
CRWBY: Hold My White Jacket.

At least Final Fantasy & Kingdom hearts are mind with care in made than 'let's make some money of these'
Weiss meanwhile got turned into a Saber and now wouldn't look out of place being summoned by Shirou Emiya.
@@kabob0077 Fate has some "whyyy" desings, especially in the saber department, but don't do it like that.
As a fashion major this entire list makes me itch.
Like seriously you are going to freeze
why on earth did the words "light poop green" make me laugh so much
..Because, uh oh stinky poop.
Weiss' Atlas look makes me think the designers secretly hate the animators and want to make their jobs miserable.
Like, "let's see how many layers we can add before she's basically rooted to the spot, spamming dust and summons."
Cute how you think they'd actually put that kind of thought into their designs.
"Bionicle"
Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time
they really should've gave Blake a really fluffy white jacket, with a black fur collar. so that it can;
A) keep her warm
B) go with her theme of cats because it can look like cat fur
C) look really freaking cool
It’s interesting hearing someone rant on issues that I personally don’t see. I’m DEFINITELY not an expert on any of character design stuff or color theory which is probably why I don’t mind. I just think it’s neat to see a new look. People talk about how good the original looks were and I’m like, they were okay I guess, and there’s no design I hate.
That is a completely fair point and it’s great that you can feel that way. I think a lot of us wished we could just look at it and not care.
Fucking I wouldn't want to be credited with designing Vernal Either. She really reminds me of a Fire Emblem Bandit...
To be honest, I think Fire Emblem has done better bandit designs than Vernal, at least in terms of looking less like a mess.
Fun/stupid thing about Ruby's Mistral outfit: I actually used it as an inspiration for the outfit for a character I created, yet I changed a lot of things to improve it better for the character:
No belts in any way
Less puffy sleeves
Long skirt
No boob-window
More rounded color pallete + fixed skin color to make sure the shirt and skin don't mix
So yeah, they could, in theory, do an outfit that has the elements the Mistral desing has (corset, the rose pattern in the thigh-highs, more warm elements rather than pure black-red), but they dropped the ball with the ammount of stuff they tried to put in Ruby in an attemp to make her more visually intresting
Figuring out what you don't like in a design can often help direct you towards making one you prefer, good job!
Could never even see it 😐
SAME
Really goes to show just how messy that design was that hardly ANYONE saw the backpack
@Twiins iink So apparently, here's the madness at 18:46
Who else wears bright white, poofy sleeves, has a Victorian-style boob window, and wears a backpack?
I miss the floofy combat skirts. bring them back!!!
I feel like I should respect your critique, but I'm too busy laughing my ass of at these annolgies.
When you were talking about robin hill, I honestly never noticed how much red she was wearing
I feel like her voice gets higher every volume
Cinder Tournament outfit be looking like she’s from Sonic Boom
Lol
Whether that's intentional or not, that's pretty cute
9:45 thats exactly how my hair is tied when i go to volleyball wtf 😂😭😭
also, for cinder, i agree that shit is UGGGLLYYYY but i think they were trying to mimick the way simon & kamina wear bandages from gurren lagann. if you look them up you can tell theres an attempt, but of course simon & kamina do the look waaaay better
Blake’s volume 7 outfit just irks me. I think it’s the color and all the zippers. The zippers around the wrist are really stupid.
“Hi I need a new super suit, I sketched out what I’d like it to look like.”
“Great I’ll get right on that...miss am I reading this correctly? This says you want zippers in the sleeves?”
“Yes, and the legs, also reverse the way the zipper in the front goes. I want to zip down my jacket.”
“Fucking what!?”
@@bri6373 hopefully now that (y'know, spoiler stuff), they'll finally take off their clunky ass coats and jackets lmaoo
Let's not forget his legs are made of metal so he doesn't need armor xd
Please understand,
Cinder wears bandage undies for the sake of more power.
...or Cinder just has that bad sense of what the hello fellow kids wear.
They gave Winter a new outfit twice, but not Sun?
IKR
His Vale outfits doesn't fit his personality and his inspiration. They could fix it in a new design but nOoo
@@Akanina_Gacha They don't even respect RWBY's inspirations. It's even worse with the side characters.
@@Angi3_6 Hey Ruby still have a cape.. And that's it
Actually Sun's design works out pretty well.
Thank god I'm not the only person who found the stills of Blake and Yang in the selfie scene to be unsettling
Mouths are DEFINITELY not one of CRWBY's strong suits
Fun Fact about Lulu's design: She was designed as challenge from the FMV team to make a character they wouldnt animate. Other than he first FMV scene, all other FMV shots are from the waist up
Haven't watched the video and I'm calling Robin Hill in the top 5.
Edit: Called it.
The thumbnail is what happened after that grimm destroyed Coco's favorite clothing store back in volume 2 😂
The Blake part reminds me of how Fred from scooby doo has the same outfit but is put together in like five different ways
At least Fred actually looks good.
*crowd roars and applauds my sick burn*
13:02 I just realized that his big ass belt buckle thing isn't attached to anything at all, like, there's no belt, it can't be attached to his waist wrap, it's just hanging there... menacingly
You know, you should feature the character in the thumbnail of this video more often they have really nice clothes!
damn didnt notice the huge amount of zippers on blake. damn that would be freezing
Damn, you went hard on Tournament Cinder. I felt that her character silhouette being drastically different went with the fact that it was a disguise.Plus I think her design looked cool, Bandage Diapie and all.
Really liked the vid! I always love hearing you talk about designs, its so much fun :)
Off the top of my head, one that you didn't mention, Neo's volume 6 design easily one of my least favourite. Theres way too much happening on her design, and it's a shame because her first outfit was so classy. The 'jacket' looks so bad because her sleeves aren't even attached to it; so technically its not even a jacket its just a tank top with a cut out for the crop top. the straps on her shoulders feel so unnessasary, especially the back of it where its a cross?? why even put that there if you're going to give her hair more volume anyways? and white pants always makes me rage, but white pants strapped to shoes just look so weird, like hey fam? just have pants tucked into boots like why is the ankle cross strap necessary? Also the poofy sleeves are also just making her look more top heavy. ALSO: shes based off of neopolitan ice cream but she has ZERO brown on her anymore. All of her browns have been turned into black. lmao sorry, rant over. I really miss neo looking classy ;-;
Cinder just out here wearing two pancakes on her shoulder
Holy shit I never noticed Cinder's tournament outfit had the shoulder pad and belts on her left arm. That really bothers me.
I would love to see a montage of them putting on all their belts and zippers, because that can't be a short process (especially for Weiss and Blake)
As far as Robyn goes, I just wish she wore a hood more lmao. That would at least make her more mysterious. But her ponytail is too high for that😭
Also I never thought about that about her neck and I saw the episode. But it’s weird cause she has no physical scars there from that event, right? Also weird that she never messes with that area, leading us to believe there’s no actual wounds from her past.🤔
I wish she was a ginger, that way your eyes aren't super drawn to her hair and she looks like the Fox version of Robin Hood.
Cinder having some sort of PTSD from the electric collar would've been great, because that's BOUND to fuck you up more than just "I hate everyone"
It didn't have to be a huge thing like Yang, just something subtle
@@KikiCatMeow exactly! Thank you!
Ah yes Twiins fighting agianst her natural enemy, bad color theory! :V
This should be fun!
Pyrrha is a great example of why you shouldn’t have titty windows. Yet after what happened to her, everyone gets them. It’s quite funny, really
finally something good to watch while i draw =D
Ren’s atlas design speaks for itself
I can’t believe it never occurred to me that Mercury also has silver eyes holy fuck! I feel like that says a lot about how story ideas are handled in RWBY
Just wanna say, I love your videos about character design. I am an artist and I always feel like I am learning something new from your channel!
I thought it would be a good idea for someone to try to find the "non credited" designs for both so I tried my best to use the artists styles to determine:
Adam (V1-3) - Monty (he mentioned at an art panel a long time ago that his design was something he had in his mind for a while)
Adam (V5-6) - Erin Winn
Vernal - Erin Winn
Robyn - Either Larissa Angus or Patrick Rodriguez
(Also, I think Ein Lee did the top half of Emerald's first outfit and Patrick did the bottom cause of Ein's sketchier linework in her old concept art)
I cosplayed Mistral Ruby, I literally took thrift store belts for it all
I hate Weiss' Atlas design.
I hate her braid. I hate her outfit. I hate the color placement
Weiss' Atlas design look like a bootleg Artoria from Type-Moon's Fate series.
Ruby’s new shirt is so close to her skin tone that I hadn’t noticed her upper chest was bare until now. I thought it was a full shirt.
I would have sworn Atlas Neo would have been the No. 1 or even mentioned. A truly horrendous design compared to her original, classy outfit.
