Big Bobcat in our backyard!

- While sitting in our office checking email about 1pm this afternoon I happened to glance out the window. Our backyard is the woods and a huge pond called the Eel Pond. I saw a large Bobcat the path walking the perimeter of the property. Grabbing my video camera, sadly missing a lot filming by fussing to turn it on and focus. I finally caught him after he had crossed over the brook and was walking by a small boat we have propped against a tree stump.
Rafe snapped off several still pictures but only got this one shot that showed most of the beastie. I was zoomed in to the max for my camera and was surprised any of the footage came out. But I was trying really hard to hold it steady.
What a beautiful creature. I feel honored to have seen him, they are quite elusive.
In Connecticut you can't dig a 3" hole without hitting a rock. The stone walls were made before the town was first settled in 1732. Every time a farmer dug a hole he had to do something with the stones so they made walls! :-) Kept the livestock in and delineated property boundaries. Glad you enjoyed my little video. I felt honored to have got the footage!
Cool capture.
V. Cool that you had the presence of mind to remember the camera while he was still in sight and not later that night over dinner.
Holy Smokes - when the title said bobcat, I was looking for one with a motor! A real live bobcat? Wowza! How quick you were to grab the camera and get those shots. Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!
That is the coolest thing to see in your own backyard!
Thank God you were in the house and not outside. It look liked he was searching for dinner. LOL It was neat that you got to capture it on film camera and video.
We are supposed to have them around here too, but I've never seen one.
What an opportunity!!!
Wow...you have big kitties in your neck of the woods..:) Beautiful!! Keep your little kitties safe..
Have a great day!!
so awesome you got to see that and thank you for sharing!
when i was little we had a black panther in our yard. as cool as it was my mom did not want us to go out to play for the longest time, i was ticked off, lol
xoexo
I saw a cougar once out west, it ran in front of our car and it was so beautiful! Now they are BIG!
Wow!! That is one heck of a cat!! I think I would be staying inside for a while. LOL
He is beautiful!! So cool that you shoot with a camera rather than a gun. We think there is one in the wooded area near here, not sure tho. Would love to see it but not that close :)
Wow, that was one big cat! I would be terrified if that were in my back yard! He is a beauty, tho!
No, not scary, Judy, COOL! LOL I was at least 100 yds away from him so no worries. Jake should be safe as he never goes far and the 'kitties' don't like the doggie smell and barking.
Hi Nancy! I was really about 100 yards away and in the house shooting out the sliding glass doors with the camera on full zoom. Even at my slow human speed I could have shut the door before he got close. ;-)
Wow great video of him. He is a big guy or gal. :-)
Yeah, he/she was pretty awesome to see!
Oh, I would love to see a black panther, how cool!
Hey, JR, good to see you! Wasn't he a purdy kitty? LOL
WOW! That is so cool that you saw that in your own backyard..........it would scare me to see that though haha................what state do you live in?
Yep, a lot bigger than my kitties! ;-)
that was totally cool!!!
It was so cool. I wish I could have focused my camera faster and got more of him, but I'm just amazed I saw him. I've lived here 12 years and this is only the 2nd one I've seen.
Very cool!
That's really cool :) very pretty creature indeed although, in my backyard ... oooo lil close :)
That's a big one!!!!
I would loved to have pet him, but not likely. He was a kitty on a mission. ;-)
Nope, not scared. If I was out there in his path I might have been. They don't attack humans unless cornered. Or so I hear. ;-) Now the black bear, that's a different story! They're much bigger!
The little kitties aren't going outside any time soon. ;-) It
s more Jake I would worry about. But these cats are pretty elusive, we know they are around but we never see them.
I was so excited to see him! I've only seen one other one and never this close. But not too scary as he was about 100 yards away and I was in the house shooting out the sliding glass door! LOL I'm not that brave!
very cool!
Very cool! Did you go pet him...hehe j/k ;~)
That kind of looks like a Lynx with the short tail and big ears. ?
Either way - it's very cool.
They're very elusive. This is the 2nd one I've seen in 12 years.
Yep, I was thrilled I got footage of him. We live in the NW corner of Connecticut.
LOL Liz, I never even thought about that kind of Bobcat! hehehe Well, my camera is never far away. I did miss a lot though because I couldn't get the @%#$ thing to focus! LOL
yea... glass and walls tend to make things not as scary ;)
Wow. Cool, but aren't you scared?
I had to restrain, I wanted to say, "Here kitty, kitty." To get him to look our direction. But he was on a mission and never turned around.
Well, our backyard is really the woods and a pond, so he probably thinks we are in HIS yard! ;-)
I would never shoot with a gun, although Rafe does, only deer though. These cats are not for shooting!
Glad we agree :) We have a gun but I have only aimed it at people LOL!!! JK
*talking in my best old man voice* "You kids get off my yard"
Very very cool. Hopefully some jerk doesn't shoot him. People can be very mean. :-(
Never mind - lol - I just Googled a pic of Bobcats and that could easily be one.
They are basically the same animal, people call them either name. Where I live in New England they call them bobcats(Lynx rufus). Thanks for watching. We still see them around a lot. They are very shy. :)
