At least you’re not glossing over the real issue by talking about low light capability - well done.
It looks like the s was in focus more often than the older camera, especially in close-ups. The newer 5S had higher contrast.

Nice comparison! I'm actually surprised that the difference is that noticeable. The GH5S seems to do a lot better at tracking when you moved back and forward. While it is also a bit faster at grabbing focus when you moved in and out of the frame, the difference is less noticeable to me. I still love having the IBIS on my GH5. I really think they should have offered the S model at the same price. The trade offs make it hard for me to accept the higher price, even if they are designed to meet different needs. Still, it seems like a worthwhile addition to the Panasonic lineup. Overall, I'm glad to see this model and the G9 added to the range. Now, they just need to give us more f/1.2 O.I.S. lenses. autofocus looks very usable...
Wow! The GH5s (and GH5, for that matter, though to a lesser degree) has improved quite a bit with the "whack-a-mole" type AF tracking. It consistently beats the GH5 to a noticeable, though small, degree. Color me impressed!
While I won't say the GH5s is better than, say, the Canon 80D, I would say that it is approaching the same ball park. I'm definitely going to have to rent both of these to see how they work for my use cases. If only the GH5s had IBIS, it would be a no-brainer for me!
On another note, IMO, the GH5 AF has improved dramatically since the 1.0 firmware. This recent 2.2 firmware is decent. I didn't notice the hunting (except for a couple occasions) that plagued the GH5 early on and I didn't see any long time missed focus or wandering. Kudos Panasonic!
Both these camera's are on my camera list. I have already bought batteries for them. Alongside Nikon D750 and Nikon D760 batteries and Canon 80D and Canon 90D batteries.

Thank you so much. The autofocus speed when you go out of frame & come back is painfully slow on both. GH5 is worse.

Very important test. It seems DfD accuracy and tracking are based on available processing power. If it is this good already on the GH5s then in a year with better processors a new camera will be near phase detect performance. GH6 will probably be as good as Sony or Canon in AF by then. GH5s would be ideal if it had IBIS, too bad.
yes exactly James. Panasonic has been telling me they believe they could get the DFD to be as better or better than the other solutions. Frankly I was quite skeptical, until now. The GH5S has much better result than the GH5 in my opinion probably because of some algorithm tweak and also more processing power. These are things that would only improve in the future and another advantage with the DFD that not many people have talked about is that it means Panasonic is not been tied to some particular sensor design, and it could also be applied to any of their cameras too, not just m43.
In my opinion, the GH5S isn't that far behind the Sony/Canon AF (which are actually not as perfect as most people thought) now and I'm expecting we'll see some major improvements with the GH6, just in time for the Tokyo Olympics

Let's hope they have not give up on the G85 series, that will be too bad if so - it's also a nice camera...
not sure they can, contrast detection is all about processing power, sure some fine tuning can help, it may be has simple has they not having enough processing power on the g85 (and older models).

Good job, anyway i concern to stabilization, maybe next video you can compare stabilization test (with handheld), many GH5 user is dilemma for upgrade to GH5s because don't have IBIS, thank you

Nice test try it again with the 35 100 at the telephoto side and in low light thats were the gh5 is pants and doesn't focus very often

Point GH5s to a group of people walking or running, pan the cam to left and then to the right to check whether it autofocuses well. Most dslr or GH5 gets blurry or out of focus clips when you pan the camera.

Hi Richard, thank you for this comparison. Personally I do not think that the GH5 AF is so much less effective. Would you mind sharing your exact settings for the GH5?
+Kai Ja settings is identical on both cameras. Face detection, AFC, 24fps 4K 8 bit, otherwise all camera defaults. I was surprised by the difference too when I did the initial test. So I retested many more times and with different lighting and also tried a few different places. I shot a lot more video I didn't show in this video as the results are pretty much the same.
I feel like a split screen would have been more easy to compare. If I watched the 5S until it came into focus then quickly looked across at the 5 it was often still out of focus but the times where it was in focus it may have only gotten there as my eyes were moving over. Not so much a problem when the difference is so noticeable but if it was much closer then it would be very hard to determine... of course split screen would mean you either had to keep hitting the centre of the shot or move the split around.
On a side note, I feel like someone should take these shots and edit them together with whimsical background music and a VO about how you are certain that your reflection is really another person and you are obsessed with trying to catch it out when it fails to copy you perfectly one day.

Richard the field of view is different on the 2 cameras. My understanding is that the GH5S has a larger sensor. Larger sensor means less cropping, but I am surprised by the difference in field of view- by that I am assuming that you had the 2 lenses set to the same zoom. If not then this might explain some differences.
yes they are all set to 25mm :)
great test hopefully one day panasonic will find away to get phase detect speed or close for tracking and focus, as that remains a major weakness.
+Tigerex966 my feeling after comparing the gh5 with GH5s is,. With more processing power and improve in algorithm, it could match the current phse detection systems in the near future. And that's what Panasonic has been telling me many times over the last year or two. (Which I was quite skeptical until now). So now I have strong hope that Pansonic will improve the continuous AF a lot when they release GH6, and I hope I won't be disappointed. They obviously know this is one of the key area they need to work on
I think you are right, maybe a chip like Apple's bionic chip with special co processors or an 8 core pany chip.
i am guessing they will have to totally redo the thermal design to keep something that powerful cool enough for continual recording.

I like the GH5s, I would get it if in market for video camera. Maybe in a couple of camera update cycles because really appreciate its features but looking to get a telephoto 200 mm before video :-)

Gh5s and the g9 has something different in the auto focus department vs there counterparts.
Thank you. Hope a firmware will arrive to have the same results than the gh5S even if I don't use very often the AF in video, it could help sometime. Skin color seems to be better too, difference is really important.

Can you autofocus while on VFR mode ?
+D'Kalle Media Group no you can't. I have already shot a video talking about shooting in VFR mode, just need to put it together and will upload to UA-cam very soon :)
Skin tones looked healthier on the gh5s. I'm assuming both on standard color profile?
I did a reset before all the testing, so i'm 99% sure they are both standard colour profile. The difference maybe due to the auto white balance as both cameras pointing slightly different direction (so I will be in the shot when close to the camera)
So it is better?

gh5s seems snappier - wish they put Dual pixel in the GH5/s - DFD is ok for G9
GH5s autofocus is still slow but I see it doesn't hunt. It's a good sign.
G6s the perfect cam... only one thing holds Panasonic back and it should have been addressed long ago.... phase detect
