The tip about the speedometer-wire clip is gold! I spent some time swearing over that one the first time I did my instrument-panel...the bloody thing just didn't..want..to...come ...out c",)
Your light switch could be the issue Mike. There is a coil on the switch that controls the brightness on the instrumentation. If you rotate the knob it will brighten or dim the lights, if turned all the way to the left the courtesy lights will come on. Over time these will get brittle and stop working well--or at all. The switch replacement should fix it.
We can't find one; we've tried going form the underside of the dash but you can get an eye on it or a wrench in most cases. The reason that is like it is boils down to the console being an option. It isn't so bad to remove the non console radio bezel. On the assembly line the console went in after the instruments and so it was not an issue to access that screw.
Tanner, check out or video on this: Episode 84 1967 1968 Mustang Cougar Dash Pad Autorestomod it is the installation, but the removal is basically that video in reverse.
I have a question I have 67 mustang swap to the coyote motor but l want to used original 67 tachometer wonder how to make the tach work do I need to buy any tach adapters
The old school tach won't like the modern electronics--and filters can be problematic. You can contact Tach Man (www.tachman.com/) who can update you to a modern movement in your tach. Ford wired them in series and while it is arguably more accurate, the guts and wiring style are not cool for modern electronics.
@JeremyBlakeNettles One of the largest (as far as old cars are concerned) is Temple Auto Salvage in Batesburg, SC: 7303 2 Notch Road Batesburg, SC 29006. Ph: 803-359-9063 Prices at Temples are what they are arguing doesn't help. Oswalt's Mustangs is up there too 701 East Church Street, Leesville, SC 803-532-1011. There is also an old yard in Elko, SC corner of US 78 and Paul St. The yard is not at the building site. Good stuff--when they will let you in. Them being open is hit and miss.
Taking apart the dash of my *67 mustang to replace the instrument panel backlights. Unfortunately I have a center console in mine and to get behind the radio it looks like I am going to have to remove the center console altogether... Is there an easier way of accessing that screw behind the radio?
I have a 1968 and the instrument lights aren't working. the blinkers high beam light work but not the instruments. it worked the first day I had it then stopped. The dashpad is it a little caved in the middle and if the screws are the grounds could they cause the lights to go out if one isn't making good contact??? i ordered new light switch thinking that's it haven't replaced yet
@JeremyBlakeNettles Thanks for the kind words! Keep watching, we are about to do some suspension stuff to our '65 hardtop.
Excellent disassembly tutorial on the cluster.
Thank you for the information.
@cecil6711 Thanks! We'll have more to come on that '68. You are witnessing the birth of our test mule for Mustang parts.

@roargl It will if you yank hard enough...and after a call too NPD for a new speedo cable it is all better. Not...that...we've...ever done that.
