I had the honor at the age of twelve to meet the man, the myth, the legend himself, Mr Victor Meldrew! Richard Wilson was attending an award ceremony in London that I had received a nomination for, and nyeve little me asked him if he'd do his catchphrase. He explained how now he only did it if the asker made a donation to charity. But, he did me the extreme kindness of cupping his hands around my ear and saying it directly to me! for a One foot in the grave fan, it was a joyus moment, and one I shall forever treasure.

You should try to get a copy of the Father Ted script book. Not only does it contain EVERY deleted scene but it has a lot of commentary. This episode was based on the writers, Linehan and Matthews, finding themselves sitting behind Richard Wilson at a Cirque du Soleil show and one suggesting to the other that whenever an act did something amazing they should loudly say 'I don't believe it!' Linehan realised that though he would never in a million years do anything like that that Ted ABSOLUTELY would, and hence the episode was born.

Back in 2019 near Christmas when I was working for the Royal Mail, we would have these pre-shift meetings about progress, health and safety etc. At the end we would all get asked whether or not we had any questions to ask. One shift I asked the manager,
“How come all the parcels are different sizes?”
There was a about a second of silence and then the entire room exploded in laughter. There were about 30 of us.
The manager thought I was being serious to the point where he told me in very specific detail as to why, he really thought I had no idea and I sold the hell out of it. Brilliant day.

I am pretty sure that Richard Wilsons reaction to Ted saying "I don't believe it." was his idea. I think it was because he got a lot people say that to him and that was how he wanted to react, they had a diffrent idea.

I'm glad you weren't spoilt by others telling you this was one of the best - it's one of my all time favourites too and have been looking forward to your reaction video for it.
The Very Dark Caves were actually filmed in Aillwee Cave (both interior and exterior apart from the Graham Norton scenes) in the north of Co. Clare - not that far from the location used for the Parochial house. I've been there and they get asked all the time if Fr. Noel is still down there ;) Coincidentally, to the plot line involving birds stealing glasses, Aillwee Cave also have a Bird of Prey centre!
The pub that Fr. Jack goes to just before the hilarious ambulance cut scene is now also a tourist attraction because of the show.

Richard Wilson was the Rector (the statutory chair of the university court; ostensibly their job is to represent students' interests; they're elected for 3 year terms) of Glasgow University when I started. His term ended that year, and Ross Kemp was elected to replace him, but since he didn't ever come to any of the meetings he was supposed to, the Students' Representative Council passed a motion asking for his resignation in October 2000. The election that followed ended with Greg Hemphill (Victor from Still Game) victorious, having won my vote with a pedge to scrap exam resit fees (which certainly didn't happen in my time).

For me this was my second favourite episode out of the series, second behind Hell (the caravan holiday). Part of my love is that they filmed it in Ennistymon and the Ailwee caves, places I would holiday in a lot. But also it has a really high amount of jokes per minute that hit every time and makes the most out of the characters being in different (and more realistic) social situations to the surreal island characters. The fights were filmed in front of real people that were unaware of what was happening, and it makes it so good. And this is indeed Graham Nortons last episode, but he appears in one more episode you need to do.

This is Graham Norton's final appearance in the series and I think the implication here is that he did actually die under the rocks

(25:03) I'm so glad you agree - it's definitely a top-three - sooo much stuff they crammed in.
They obviously had some series budget left over to do this one - outdoor locations - real populated ones (!), cast of thousands, including hiring Richard Wilson, who probz didn't come cheap in those days. I think it musta been Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews who cleaned up at the bookies, to push the boat out for this one episode.
    In fact: (21:37)
    Great reaction!

Gutted that the Ted run is nearly over, I love seeing someone totally new to Ted experiencing such a great part of my childhood for the first time. When you finish this series, would you consider Derry Girls? It's another Irish comedy, just a more recent one. There's a couple of Father Ted actors who appear in it at points

Before this virus struck us my friend and I were a bit like Mrs. Doyle and her friend when it came to paying we used to meet up in a cafe. Although I never quite managed to wrestle her to the floor or end up in jail! Love the eye test charts and wouldn't it make things more fun if they used them from time to time.
