  • The 20mph speed limit will come into force across Wales on September 17, but it has already been piloted in a number of rural areas.
We went for a drive through a few country villages to see what all the fuss is about.

No they are not. It's only in built up areas have the 20mph. Personally I don't see the need for 20 mph but to be honest it was a bit strange for a while but its no big deal. The idea that all road in Wales are now 20mph is nonsense. What it does do is make people who used to drive at 35 through 30mph zones now tend to do less than 30.

The petition against this ridiculous speed limit has reached just under 400,000 and that arrogant old woman Drakeford, who is supposed to represent the people of Wales has said that he will not reverse HIS decision regardless of the number who oppose it. "Saving lives" he says, but doesn't mention the impact on health of slower cars who are pumping out more fumes particularly in built up areas.
To slow a modern car you have to engage a lower gear which uses more fuel, creates more wear and tear on the engine, not to mention the fact that drivers are spending far too much time looking at their speedometers. Like the 50 MPH on the M4, it does nothing to reduce pollution, or safety, it simply creates havoc with the traffic flow.

40-60K is the luxury extended range extra horsepower versions of electric vans. Especially after BYD basically smashed their way into the market and forced a round of price reductions from Volkswagen, Tesla etc.
Heck, the ETP3 costs 28K here, and that's including a 10K extra EU anti-sustainability tax that they impose all on EV cars that aren't fully produced inside the EU. So the real price is just 18K.

On a motorway you get a bottle neck when lanes merge e.g. 4 lanes to 3 or 3 to 2. Now on Welsh roads we have potentially a 40 or 30 mph stretch of road becoming a 20 mph road, drivers will brake causing rear end collision, the vehicle engines will be less efficient emitting more harmful tail pipe gas, the vehicles will use more fuel, drivers will concentrate on their speedo instead of the road!
    Its a complete nonsense.

  • @weebolddavy
    @weebolddavy 11 місяців тому +25

We don't all live in Cardiff and don't have the associated problems with traffic, collisions and injuries. What may work for cities may not be appropriate for the whole country. One size doesn't fit all.
Of the 22,000 miles of roads in Wales, 7,700 miles are now 20mph. I have no objection to driving at 20mph on residential roads, what I do object to is sitting at 20mph on roads when that speed is inappropriate and there are plenty of them.
We're going to have the situation where traffic is streaming towards a town at 50/60mph then it's down to 20mph which leads to traffic tailing back and having the situation where there are no gaps for pedestrians to safely cross or for cars to come out of side streets and heaven forbid, turn right! Then the traffic catches up on a cyclist doing 10/12mph and cannot safely pass because of on coming traffic, then other cyclists overtake or undertake the slow moving traffic. It's going to create danger in places where it didn't previously exist.
Another thing, the speed limit does not apply to cyclists as they're not mentioned in the Highway Code and cannot be prosecuted for speeding.
It's not about getting folk onto public transport around here as there are none and our nearest hospital is 23 miles away in England. Independent Wales? They're having a laugh.
They've been in power for 20 years. As they say 'Twenty is Plenty' it's time to get rid, enough is enough!

Do not need reports, its common sense that an obscure speed people are not used to drive at will cause them to look at their speedos more and hence suffer more accidents, plus the lower gear, hgh revs will cause more pollution and wear and tear on the car resulting in more scrappage and environmental damage, so the only valid reason they have is to remove cars from the road, get them in 15 minute cities.

I'm a delivery driver, and I've studied the maps in my delivery area. I'm pleased to say most of the new 20 limits and exceptions are quite reasonable. Most of the new 20's are in areas where I wouldn't normally go over 25mph, the places where it was a bit daft have been excepted and stayed a 30. I've been doing 20mph in many old 30 zones for a few weeks leading up to the change to get used to it and it's not really made much difference. So I'm generally in favour of the change.
If you're law abiding but hate doing 20mph, blame the speeders. Loads of them go beyond the limit. It's probably a good thing that the people who used to do 40mph in a 30 will now bring their speed down to a safer 25 or 30mph in the new 20mph zones. It's their loss if they get a ticket.

You fail to mention the most important result of the 20 limit: more pollution. There is no way you can dump 10mph-worth of kinetic energy going into a now-20-was-30 limit without generating brake dust and waste heat. There is no way you can restore that lost kinetic energy when you leave the limit without burning more fuel accelerating. The effect on overall fuel consumption is quite noticeable. You can add to that more congestion. If you increase the time it takes to get through a now-20-was-30 limit then, if you want to maintain the same traffic flow (vehicles per hour), you have to have 50% more cars in the limit at any one time.

One of the main reason they've brought in the 20mph zones in Wales is because EVs take longer to stop because of the weight of the batteries, the bad press of killing more little kids wouldn't help shift them off the dealers forecourt to mums in EV 4X4s.

Not forgetting, in the recent report on Health in Wales, this 20 mph limit, is clearly, to:
"Move into a modal situation where 20 minute neighbourhoods will replace the need for private cars on roads!"
So that, is what the truth of it is! Labour/Plaid are hell-bent on creating what the WEF has directed them to create! Only the complete removal of both Plaid & Labour, from any Parliamentary process can halt their plans!
There again, idiots will always do what they are told and continue to vote Labour/Plaid!

All the tests I've seen on carwow run contrary to that claim. I guess partly due to their regenerative braking system. I'm sure EV car makers would have installed more powerful brakes on them if it was an issue. If I were going to speculate as to a link between the 20mph limit and EVs, I would have thought it was because they're silent running.

What i hope is for common sense to prevail. Dripford is no doubt on a power trip. He has revealed himself as being a nasty, narcissistic idiot. That said. It is a caring and considerate soul who understands that a safe and reasonable speed in town is no more than 30 mph. So what i hope will happen is that the Police will continue to monitor 30 mph zones ... whilst completely ignoring Dripfords narcissistic 20 mph roads. That way; so long as we continue to be safe, alert and considerate drivers in Wales, Mark Dripfords horrid little power-trip will spectacularly and embarrassingly crash. Power to the (considerate) people !!!

It’s going to cost more to drive at such a low gear, food prices will go up, delivery drivers are on the roads between 45 minutes to an hour more.
Labour are so be for the working class what a joke.
Buses and HGV were not supposed to drive at such low speeds.
Has for the average journey only been affects by 45 seconds is a total load of bull.
I know business like grass cutting/ hedge trimming etc who can do a few jobs in a day, they can’t pass that cost on to the client.
What do you expect from the media again the media not speaking against the idiot M Drakeford.

The real reason they are reducing speed limits is because EVs are a lot heavier and fair a lot worse in emergency breaking that internal combustion cars.
