I totaled my 2023 soft tail. Got a grade 4. I’m 5 days in and feels 85% better already. Ended up having to replace ligaments and stuff too with a allograft
Y gosh this is the video I've been looking for. So much good information. I have definitely benifitted for hitting the gym but even though its stablised, i cant push or pull alot of weight so hoping physio would help. Thank you again for doing this vid.
Yeah, wonderful video, very comprehensive! I had a grade 3 separation 5 mos ago, couldn't push anything with that arm. No surgery, lots of PT and i am back at it. Not 100% but i can feel soreness in new areas compensating for the torn ligaments. This video helped pinpoint why and where, thank you 😊
Very helpful video. Had a 3 point separation.About 10 years ago. No surgery and it healed just fine. I am able to do everything as before, swimming, biking, etc. However, the shoulder and shoulder blade area muscles get really irritated now if push for two long. A very sad and painful after effect.
Me too. I had I grade 2 seperation some how and my shoulder hasn't been the same. I've dealt with a lot of pain and discomfort for 9 years now and developed athritis within the joint. No surgery, just PT
This video was amazing thank you so much for the insight and knowledge. I’m going through the ideas of surgery now from a bad snowboarding accident, I have grade 3 with a fracture and more damage to the shoulder. I will need a surgery to the shoulder itself and one for the clavicle as well if I follow through. This is an awesome video and dialogue, cheers again. I will share this link and update with info on my progress.
@@GoesByFooty another grade 3 from a snowboarding fall here, how did you guys recover? Did you get surgery? I'm on my second week and I've been given the option to get surgery, but I'm leaning more towards the conservative treatment. Any information you can give me on the recovering process and the mid to long term limitations would be appreciated.
@@sk8_bort Hello Carlos, sorry that this happened to you. I now feel fully recovered just over a year later and here was my diagnosis. My orthopaedic surgeon told me that I had between a grade 2 and grade 3, meaning no surgery could be performed and instead a lot of rehab and time will heal it. It probably wouldn't ever be the same and until now, there will be days where I still have some clicking and stiffness, but as an athlete, I've consistently been rehabbing it ever since and am back playing sports, lifting weights and sometimes I forget that I even had the injury. I was in a sling for the first 6 weeks, really babying it, but then progressively focused on getting ROM, strength and mobility back. The importance is mindset and commitment to you rehab and you will heal faster.
nick nick so glad to hear your feeling better. my daughter had surgery for a level 4 just two days ago and the pain is hard on her. she got a plate put in. makes me feel good to know that you feel better
Thank You for posting such a beautifully detailed explanation. I just had a ski accident last week, diagnosed in both the clinic and by 2 separate doctors as a grade III AC joint separation. I gotta say I'm really nervous about the surgery, which is odd given that I've had 7 other ortho surgeries in the past. This one just feels more uncertain than the others, due to the wide variety of techniques and historical failure rates (just based on my own research). The Dr. said it was completely up to me whether I should do the surgery or not, as he said he really was on the fence himself about just seeing how it goes, but did comment that I would at least benefit from the bone not sticking up. Now I'm left to decide, and have no idea what I'm going to do. Hope this patient had a good recovery though.
@@renstillmann I had surgery on one of my shoulders after an AC separation. Took about a year or so but eventually, I could sleep on it and actually prefer sleeping on that side. I separated my other shoulder and am choosing to wait. We'll see.
Great video. Thanks for sharing this. I have a grade 3 AC separation with no surgery. Large bump. In sling for 2 weeks and then PT. Slow at first building up strength with bands and the weights. I am at 5 months now and can do everything I could before injury. I hurt it falling off dirt bike on shoulder and I ride fine now. I can sleep on it etc. My pain when I have it is like 2 or 3. I am lifting weights now. Bench press and push-up 30+ without pain. I will say listen to your body. When it hurts stop and let it heal for 24-48 hours then try again. All injuries SUCK. But this one can be manageable without surgery. I like to describe it as UGLY and AWKWARD. It is gruesome to look at in certain positions. The end of collarbone just sticking out. It really looks like it should hurt more but it doesn’t. The joint is also different then normal one. A bit more clunky and pops etc. hopefully long term it continues to stays strong and stable and painless. Best of luck to everyone with this injury and stay positive and do the PT 3 times a day until it hurts then stop. It should get better with strength and time.
I just wanted to update I ran into a complication at about month 6. Basically I tore my anterior deltoid muscle on front attachment to clavicle. It’s painful. I am getting MRI soon and the will revisit surgery option. The joint is just too high and week and when you really stress it it failed for me. I gave an honest try at conservative rehab but may need surgery to finally stabilize it. Just wanted to share the update. Good luck to everyone running into this injury. All injuries just SUCK.
@@ojashification sure I will share what I can via chat. I did get surgery at about 9 months since I injured it again with full activity and tore anterior deltoid muscle. Surgery was difficult. First 2 weeks are hard. The just pass the time in sling. 8 weeks total. I am at 12 weeks post opt now and range of motion is 100% with strength ok. Starting band workouts/PT soon. It a long recovery 6 months but so far things have been good. Bump is gone and shoulder is stable and feels normal again.
Huge confidence booster. Self proclaimed fitness junkie and my third MTB ride I get a grade 3 AC Separation. I went for snatching 225 and c&j 275 to doing nothing for a week. I don’t want to lose everything I’ve worked so hard for. I’m ready to get better
Ending week 2 of my recovery and I put in 33 miles on my road bike today. Even set two PR’s on two segments. Shoulder felt great during and after. I started rehab with bands on Monday. I can achieve full over head lockout with no issues. I’m still trying to take it slow of course. I’m not confident enough to touch any weights yet. I’ll wait for the doctors go ahead first.
@@hpspeed8877 I lasted about a week in the sling and it was killing the back of my shoulder. I feel super fortunate with how I’m recovering. Just hope I’m not jinxing it.
Thanks for this great explanation! I have a grade 3 AC separation with no surgery. Large bump. In sling for 3 weeks and then rehabilitation. I feel better hope no need surgery.
Hey Esus, that's for your comment. I'm in a similar situation. I've suffered from a grade 3 AC separation as well 6 months ago. I'm also an experienced athlete and have opted to build dense and rigid muscular mass to combat AC separation. So far so good. However, there is still tenderness and discomfort during exercise. I often wake up to my shoulder in the wrong place. After wake up is the worse by far. I ended up scheduling a surgery for next month. On a second thought, how do you feel now without the surgery? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
@@mikel87 Hey Mike, thanks for asking! It has been a battle. I had my operation on Feb. 1, 2022. The AC separation surgery was on my right shoulder. I have not been the most consistent with PT. However, i started weight lifting pretty early as soon as my doctor gave me the clear to lift and carry up to 20lbs. This operation took a lot volume out of my Trapezius muscle and upper pecs. I still suffer from shoulder instability due to the lack of strength in my right shoulder. It has become more difficult to grow my shoulder and upper pecs strength and volume compared to the other side of my body. It's extremely tough to warm up my shoulders for a proper exercise. I feel slight tingle and pinch in the cold. Mobility and the range of motion is hindered. There are times that I completely regret getting the operation. But, I've been able to sleep on my shoulder. But, I've been able to look at myself in the mirror without a bone poking out of my shoulder. But, I've been able to start exercising. It's tough to say. I believe that it's still too soon for me to make any comments about regretting the surgery. Ultimately, do a thorough research before surgery. What is OK for me may not be OK for you. Ask specifics if you're curious. Merry Christmas!
@@sooson2795 how are you feeling now after surgery? Had a grade 3 ac yesterday after skiing. Medic said I need surgery and waiting for second opinion when I get home.
I had a grade 5 ac tear. I got surgery to correct it. My doctor recommended surgery because he said I'm young (21) and I work construction. He said if I don't get surgery it will still heal but i wouldn't be able to lift my arm above my head. I definitely want to be able to lift my arm above my head.
@@HiFLEXHealthPerformance This happened about 4 to 5 years ago. I have pretty much no issues. Sometimes on rare occasions If I put a lot of strain on my shoulder from going to the gym or my physical labor job , I will feel sore at the incision from the surgery. It's not an intense pain.
Loved the 3D and the explanation. Had a huge crash on riding MTB and ended up with a broken left wrist and a level 5 separation in the right clavicle. Had surgery on both areas the same day a week after the crash. Had a surgen tell me that the clavicle was just estetic and surgery was not needed, but I wanted surgery. Even after healing without surgery its something that is just going to hurt or be uncomfortable when lifting weights or doing activities. I would have prefered a broken clavicle bone insted on ligaments but that is what I got. I'm in my 2weeks of recovery and pain is gone but movement is very stiff. Doctor told me not to move or use shoulder with force for 3 to 4 months, so that is do, I dont want to damaged the area.
Got my surgery (tight rope) after 2 weeks after my snowboarding injury. Surgery not really pleasant and first week suck.. but after 3 weeks was already so much better. Now 6 weeks later have no issue lifting some weight, have full range of motion. No bump. Still haven't tried to lift anything heavy. Besides 4 inch scar, no regrets so far.
Did mine way back in ‘95 playing Aussie Rules Football. I have had issues since but now I’m older and not as fit/strong I really need to get my AC joint fixed. I’m finding that it’s very uncomfortable to lay on either side especially when in bed thus effecting my sleep and general wellbeing. When I have fallen asleep on the injured (Lt) side I will be awakened due to the excruciating pain. Even though my injury is 28 yrs old I’m hoping that I can find the right solution for me.

@@C.T.91 thank you for inspiring me. I have gained weight since the injury. I, too, will enroll in the gym and get back to being my actual self before the injury.
Was great to find this video. I think this is the injury I have and at Grade 3, but am going to a doctor tomorrow to see what the score is. I'm hoping I don't need surgery, but will find out.
I was originally diagnosed with a grade 2/3 however when I have a meeting with a surgeon, he said my injury was closer to a grade 5. I had the injury over 14 months ago and made a decent recovery. I've been on the surgery waiting list for around 10 months now in order to stabilise my joint as often times by collarbone can shift and move, creating a more visible lump. Part of me is reluctant to get surgery as I cope with normal life but the other part of me can't wait to get this surgery done in order to return to normal activities and build up strength and stamina again to how it was before.
Hello, this is by far the best video I have seen related to AC Joint separation. I've suffered from AC Split Type 3 about 6 months ago. I'm an experienced athlete and have began to build dense and rigid muscular mass to combat this issue. Is this sustainable? Also, Is it possible to build ligaments back into place from scar tissues by aligning shoulders via muscular correction over surgical correction? What are some long term disadvantages of surgical AC Joint Separation reconstruction?
Thanks so much! Education is key and I feel there is poor education out there for patients to consume and visually understand what’s going on. Without seeing you in person, take this very loosely. Since you have a base as an athlete and are likely very in tune with your body, you may be able to sustain it but I would be incredibly diligent and work with a skilled therapist to make sure everything is going ad smoothly as possible: You will develop scar tissue, but im not sure I would go so far as to say it would attach and almost mimic the ligament. Be sure to include nerve glides in your training, as your nervous system KNOWS there is a need for stability so it may add tension or the nerves can become irritable. I REALLY need to organize and clean up this channel now that people have found it! If you need help locating the nerve glides let me know
I got a grade 4 injury, 3 weeks ago in a car accident. I heard from 5 doctors that I need surgery, but the doctor ("one of the best" who barely speaks with me) that was assigned to me only fixated my shoulder and arm with an elastic bandage and said to wear it for two weeks , they also applied pressure on my sticking bone with a roll of a bandage. I had severe pains and after 11 days of having those bandgaes ( 16 days in total from the accident cause they didn't do anything on time) a decubitus formed from the pressure. When i went to a check up to my doctor he said I don't need an operation we just need to heal the wound. I was wondering what will happen, I have both ac and cc ligaments torn, and I've read that it can lead do chronic pain, overall shoulder instability and that injuries will be able to reoccurr more easily and in few years osteoporosis and arthritis can occur. I am a 27 year old woman, so I'm not someone with a lot of muscles. Will the recovery and maintenance without operation mean that i will have to keep exercising all the time to not have issues? And also the state medical system in my country is very bad cause apparently the better doctors need to be offered money to even take you seriously and talk with you about the issue and offer constructive advice, so should I go and try to get the operation at a private clinic ? or trust the doctor who barely tells me anything, cause of course I always consider the option of me overacting and professional doctors being sick and tired of people and not having time to talk with every patient but say something in less than an minute and send them off.
Also for the last 7 days my arm is only in a sling so they can treat the wound, no one suggested any exercises yet and i can barely move my arm only partially form the elbow
Love the 3d model! What scenario do you recommend surgery? When it’s grade 5 and all the ligaments are torn? I’m starting to use mine again at week 2 but I’m contemplating surgery. Do you think not having surgery would make it easier to hurt other things in the shoulder due to the instability of how much it has moved in a grade 5? Or with enough PT and strength it would be strong again for dirt bike riding and future crashes
I was told by my doctor not to get one for my grade 3 because with my lifestyle I guess I’m more likely just to re injure it opposed to leaving it? Thoughts. I do Bjj, powerlifting, and wrestling
I’m in the same boat. Did mine 2 years ago mountain biking. I do BJJ and MMA training as well. Made the mistake of not doing calisthenics (pull ups and rows for strength) for a month, just taking a break to rest my body. Loss so much stability that I went from 25 pull ups to 5 in a month. Won’t do that again. It’s important to keep the musculature strong around the shoulder.
I have a grade 3 ac separation I don’t know if I should get surgery or not, my ortho said I don’t need surgery just pt. It’s been 4 months since I injured my shoulder and been goin to pt once a week. I do my daily shoulder stretches with light weights. I still get pain sometimes I feel 10/10 other times I fell 10/6. Pain comes and goes. Shoulder gets fatigued easily. It’s hard to do activities that consist of me lifting, carrying, pulling from above my shoulders.

Separated it senior year high school football….im 26 now, no surgery just tons of weight lifting I feel good but not stable enough to lift the amount I desire
Great video and the visual demonstration helps explain a lot of doubt I have.. Indeed, the AC joint is just 1 of the supporting structure.. Without it, the surrounding muscles just got to work harder to compensate for the loss.. Human body is so amazing that it can handle any curve ball you throw at it !
5 years ago I managed to separate my ac joint grade 3 level 5. Things were fine at first but now my shoulder keeps shifting lower and lower my arm is always swelled, my fingers go numb and cold, and my whole scapula area is so full of inflammation. What are my options, and where do I find a good doctor?

Great video. I definitely have an ac separation from a water activity over 10 yrs ago. I never checked it out and now it always gets agitated when i lay down to watch tv or happen to roll over when i sleep. Im an avid weight lifhter and i noticed during the two months the gyms were closed, my ac joint felt a lot more weaker. Im back in the gym and feels. Lot better. So your saying focus on pec, shoulders and back muscles?
For the most part i dont deal with lits of pain. I might of gotten used to the pain that lingers. Sometimes i feel that my trap pulls up fof relief. When would you recommend any form of physicsl therapy if any? It seema lile my bome will never go back down without surgery. Thats sucks lol. thank you; this video was extremely helpful. is there any way to confirm a tear versus a stretch to these ligaments? are there any physical tests to confirm which ligament is damaged and responsible for the elevated clavicle?
I am so glad it is helpful! I would definitely advise seeing a skilled physical therapist as there are tests they can do to assess for tear. It is very difficult to asses specific ligament, but if you have a very prominent elevation it is likely there is some significant ligamentous disruption.

@@LithaIndoorSoccer Thanks, I just want to ride my road bike but every time I want to speed up over 25km/h my arm will hold tight to my bike bar, which will cause pain in my AC joint, particularly the end of my collar bone
This is exactly what I am dealing with. You were about to talk about tendon at the front of the neck, what can be done for that pain? And yes, it has taken considerable strength to alleviate this pain
We are definitely not all the same, that is for sure. I am sorry you had bad experiences! I am a huge advocate for changing PT if you do not feel they are up to par.
I fell on my shoulder at bjj a few weeks back. Couldn't really do a whole lot with my arm for a while and just noticed that bone sticking up a couple days ago. Things are getting back to normal but after seeing this I wonder if I'm just getting by on luck at the moment lol
I got rolled on my shoulder during my bjj class last August, ironically by a fellow who had AC separations in both shoulders (he just let them go in both cases and ended up fine, but I suspect they were both low grade)! Unfortunately for me, the pain and popping persist, so I'm guessing surgery will be in my future. I don't mind the surgery so much as dealing with the recovery and rehab, but I definitely don't like it as-is.
My clavicle was broken 20 years ago skating...in the past ,3,5 years I'm skating again. And sperated both shoulders, my right side is bad, there's like a horn sticking out. thing is my clavicle on that side, broken one... it's growing and twisting, pushing the horn more and more. And my shoulder is moving more and more forward. It's done.... damn
hi...does the top part of the ac raise up even in a grade 1 or 2....i have no gap in the area on xray but still have the bump, with pain and weakness in the whole shoulder/shoulder blade area....2weeks in...
Had grade 5 surgery about 2 years ago, really glad I got it but I really didn’t have any choice it was popping in and out anytime I moved and I went into shock due to pain while waiting for surgery at home (Covid). 2 years out I have full range of motion, crazy scar and almost all my strength back!!
I also tore stuff that holds my scapula together that was honestly one of the most painful parts of the injury for me. And had pain in my bicep that was unaddressed but not a problem now.
Thank you for this video. I had a stage 3 seperation 9 weeks ago. My doctor took me out of the sling at 4 weeks and since then my collar bone seems to stick up more everyday. So quick question, my doctor says the ac joint will reattach via scar tissue. Is this true or will that collar bone always be detached?
Hey! Glad it was helpful. I try to share my videos I make for my patients incase it can help anyone else. So that is not a black and white answer unfortunately. It depends on your activity, how your rehab goes, etc. A grade 3 is pretty significant and theoretically tore all ligamentous connection there. There is obviously much additional musculature that can hold things in place, but my best assumption is that you'll have a solid "bump" that forms right at the AC joint of scar tissue and the collarbone might stay more elevated than the other side. Be very diligent with rehab because the stronger the surrounding musculature is endurance wise, the more support that joint has in its more aligned position to heal.
@@chelseasmith1556 unfortunately my orthopedic Dr didn't assign rehab. I have a friend that's a PTA and he has helped a little. I have a 20 year old separated ac joint thats been an issue since day 1, even after 2 surgeries including a modified weaver and dunn that i never let heal . I was young and dumb when it happened. i didnt understand the injury and i never let it heal before going back to normal activities.. . its very unstable and i live in chronic pain that effects my quality of life.. im in great shape physically over all, i work out almost daily and target my ac join with physical therapy exercises .but it effects pretty much all my exercises .. when i do pull ups it feels like im not hanging evenly because theres so much instability in that shoulder that its reach is longer when hanging, its very frustrating. .. my shoulder blade position is different than my non injured side, its lower and sits flat almost .. i have achy back pain on that side daily and the appearance of a difference in leg length/hip height that i feel is all stemming from this shoulder injury..its like my entire injured side is effected ...do you have any advice for me ? i dont even know where to begin . thanks bud
First off, let me just say that I am sorry you have to deal with that! I have a fair amount of chronic pain from hypermobility and can empathize up to a certain extent. Instability really makes a huge effect on the rest of the body, as it is all connected. What you're describing absolutely could all be stemming from that. Where are you located? If you can, it would ABSOLUTELY be worth it to see a very skilled doctor of physical therapy. I am pretty connected all over thanks to mentorships and online connections. I'm happy to see if I know anyone near you! This is when the internet redeems itself...When people start self advocating and finding exactly who they need to work with! The generalized system can fail a case like yours SO HORRIBLY. It's unfortunate. If I can recommend one thing, it's that you treat your body like a car. If you'd replace tires and repair your engine....heck....be willing to invest in your body the same way. For example, MRI + surgery is going to cost people $2-5k, as you've already experienced. Comparatively, a plan of care with a practice like HiFLEX consisting of evaluation + 8 visits is $1520 in our case...very similar for many of my colleagues...and typically has great outcomes. If your AC joint isn't completely detached and clavicle floating... you should be able to have success with pain control, stability, and general function with a good PT. Best of luck!! Let me know if I can help further. Shoot me an email at chelsea@hiflexhealth.com and I can email you some suggestions.

I have an AC separation after a skiing accident about 4 years ago. I have full function but my activity levels have reduced since the accident. My clavicle floats up and I can feel the bone move. Can I still get an operation after 4 years since the accident?
That will be entirely up to surgeon! If they feel they can successfully bring it back down and nothing else has significantly changed in a way it would limit it i would think it may be possible?
@@HiFLEXHealthPerformance in that case, its worth me checking in with my doctor then. Thanks, I thought that maybe ligaments would have stretched etc resulting in there being a time limit to getting it fixed.
I need help!!!! I did. Shoulder workout 2.5 weeks ago. My right shoulder can’t flex. Looks like I have no trap at all on the right. Left is huge which I normally have big traps anyways. I have a mild pain since this happened. How do I find out how bad my shoulder is ????? ER doctors suck! What kind of doctor do I need to see???
This is an incredible explanation! Best one I've seen. I injured my AC joint about 6 weeks ago. Type 1. After about 7 days I was able to do most daily tasks again, but nothing strenuous. Now at week 6 I have good strength, but still some positions and movements give me trouble (especially reaching my hand behind my back and stretching across to other side). I have resumed very mild exercise activity in the form of solo basketball dribbling and shooting drills with very minimal explosive activity. So obviously shooting a basketball does not hurt anymore...only when I do a crossover dribble behind my back or dribble hard and fast. Occasionally when I'm exercising, the should does bother me slightly. I'm still concerned. I don't want to eff my shoulder up permanently. I feel like I should be further along after 6 weeks. Two questions: (1) What other indicators are there besides level of pain for knowing when it is safe to resume contact sports activity and that the injury has fully healed? (2) Is it safe to resume activity up to where the pain is tolerable or should I stop everything altogether until there is no pain? I know you don't know the details of my situation exactly, but any general advice would be greatly appreciated!
You're asking questions that need to be directed to your Dr and Physical Therapist. It's irresponsible and inappropriate for anyone else to reply. Just telling you why you haven't seen a reply or anything.
Don't know if your still active on this thread, @HiFLEX Health & Performance, but I "dislocated" my collar bone while mountain bike riding, as I am a vet, I went to the ER at the local VA hospital and they sent me home with pain meds and an appt for 3 weeks from now. Per the x-rays that they took, and the fact that my shoulder blade is predominantly "drooping" down and my collar bone is visibly sticking way up, can that be interpreted that I may have a grade 5 separation? And if so, would surgery be a viable option? Thanks in advance!!
Julio, SO SORRY for the epically delayed response! I have neglected to check notifications on here and need to make a point to check in more! How are things 3 months out? Did it end up being grade V?
I just separated my shoulder, I’m really worried if it will never be the same. Do you have advice for finding a physiotherapist for this? I mean what can they even do really? Just strengthen the surrounding muscles in your chest and delt and deal with it like that forever? It just sucks it seems like. Even if it wasn’t as bad what would be the risk going forward for the injured shoulder in particular like is it more at risk for impact or in certain positions?
So sorry to see this! There are a lot of manual interventions to make sure secondary muscle guarding of the neck and shoulder blade do not kick up and cause additional pain and discomfort . But yes, a massive focus would be on strengthening of the proper musculature to ensure as much support as possible to the stretched ligaments. if there is complete tear of ligaments, surgical intervention may be warranted. If there is only partial tearing of the ligaments, often times, significant strengthening can be very helpful and avoid surgical intervention of course. Without seeing you, there is no way for me to give any specific advice like that. Where are you located? Sometimes the best route is to ask on social media and see who people in your area have gotten great results from. This is not always, but typically an orthopedic is going to send to someone in-house or someone who markets to them a lot (they may get great results don’t get me wrong but usually physician offices are not as familiar with out of network providers who have more 1:1 time).
@@HiFLEXHealthPerformance, hey thanks for the response. I’m located in DC. Yea, I haven’t looked around too much atp. I called a physio close by and was going to go in for a session but the trainer didn’t even know what a separated shoulder was so I figured that option wouldn’t make sense

Just underwent biceps Tenodesisin surgery and acromion clavicular excision. And prior to my surgery my AC joint felt like it was just unstable and making a clunking sound when I moved it in certain ways. And now after the surgery it still feels unstable and making that clunking sound. Not as much but it is. After the AC joint is healed up from the surgery will that noise and unstability go away? Hey ! hopefully someone will reply. I injured my AC joint about a year ago ( fell off my dirt bike ) and I still have pain everyday. I am a carpenter by trade so it's very important I have full range /strength of my shoulder. Most days my pain is a 6/10 but can sky rocket to a 10/10 until I do some sort of cupping therapy or massage therapy to bring the pain back down. The pain also gets really bad when I'm trying to sleep and I can't lay on the injured side. I have tried multiple different methods to try and stabilize my shoulder / reduce pain however, nothing has worked. Right now, I'm frustrated with what my next course of action should be. Any tips / advice would be greatly appreciated :)
I had a stage 2 tear from a car wreck in 2009. I don't know how long I had pain but it does get better. I owe my recovery to the fact that I have been in the gym weight training since 2006. Strengthening my shoulder has further helped me heal from the injury. Rehab your shoulder and give it time.
Hi Madison do you know how bad your injury was? There's grades for how badly separated your shoulder is I had a grade 3 so you could see a bump on my shoulder it was pretty bad also did you ever do any PT for your shoulder?
@@kevin180286 Hi ! It must of been below a 3 as I had no bump just an insane amount of pain. However all tests ( ultra sounds and x rays ) have come up clear. I have done physio in combo with dry needling and that helped a little but my progress always seems to plateau. But the biggest obstacle was trying to get my pain down as it became unbearable. I did end up seeing a specialist and they said they wouldn't operate and made me get cortisone injections. It helped a little but not 100%. Definitely frustrating !
@@GhettoMountainsJr SO frustrating. Unfortunately sometimes pain is very complex even outside of the direct injury due to nerve irritation or other muscular guarding. Bummer that PT did not knock pain level down lower. Have you tried any nerve glides?
@@HiFLEXHealthPerformance I know ! It's a tough case and with my line of work, I need my shoulder functioning properly, pain free. I actually got a cortisone shot a few weeks back and that has helped with the pain but it's not 100%. I usually do cupping on and around and that will tie me off for a few days. I haven't tried that technique no, do therapist typically offer that ? Thanks for the reply !
The problem isn't weakness. The problem is when you flex your muscles to raise your arm, it pulls your shoulder blade and collar bone together and grinds and binds, and pinches things between it, and will pop as they are grinding past each other. When the AC is there (particularly at the end of the collar bone)- it acts like a rubber bump stop, and doesn't let the two bones grind together. This is equally as bad of a problem as it no longer being able to support weight. I've had a torn AC for over a decade, and it never really gets better. I've seen people have good results with stem cell injections, but otherwise it never grows back and is very easy to reinjure.
Hey i got a bump on my shoulder it's the collar bone actually, quite bulged out. Dr. Said that it is type/level 4 separation, and it's been 6 months, the bump is still there, will it itself come to it's place or I should go for a surgery? @Karan How's your shoulder now? Hope you are doing well. I got my AC3 injury in Dec 2021, no surgery too. I am almost back to full strength now with good ROM. In recent months, my AC bump got "thicker and rounder" and the shoulder muscle also feel tighter although no pain. Almost always, the shoulder feels good after workout. I got a level 3 with my clavicle poking through my back. I have no pain and full range of motions with good strength. However,I’m going through with surgery because, cosmetically,it’s looks awful and my right arm sits lower than my left. I just hope I’m not making a mistake.😅
After about 5 month post-injury, I can sleep (but will avoid) on the AC3 side as I don't want to place long hours of strain on the AC area. Thankfully, I naturally prefer the none injured shoulder. No surgery but 1 x weight + 1 x band workout weekly. Hope that helps!

@@sk8_bort Hello Carlos, sorry that this happened to you. I now feel fully recovered just over a year later and here was my diagnosis. Hi Nick
I had surgery for grade 5 two weeks back
Thank You for posting such a beautifully detailed explanation.
I’ve had the bump on my shoulder for months now doesn’t hurt but I hate it haven’t even gone to the docs yet
What did you decide? Question, can you sleep on your side now/after surgery or does it hurt?
@@renstillmann I had surgery on one of my shoulders after an AC separation. Took about a year or so but eventually, I could sleep on it and actually prefer sleeping on that side. I separated my other shoulder and am choosing to wait. We'll see.
I'm in the exact same situation right now, how did you heal?

Hey Esus, that's for your comment. I'm in a similar situation. I've suffered from a grade 3 AC separation as well 6 months ago.

What was the surgical procedure offered distal clavicle excision?
Since you have a base as an athlete and are likely very in tune with your body, you may be able to sustain it but I would be incredibly diligent and work with a skilled therapist to make sure everything is going ad smoothly as possible:
You will develop scar tissue, but im not sure I would go so far as to say it would attach and almost mimic the ligament.
@@kalebperez6874 that's what I read also, but the doctors here....
2 weeks out from grade 1 AC. You have a really attractive voice lol

@@jackofall5360 hi hope you are better now. It's been more than 5 months for me, grade 3 separation without surgery and I am doing PT, and rehab exercises to strength my back muscles, it works and I feel much better now. It will hurt sometimes but it's accepatble
Gracias. Si ha sido muy util. Gracias!!
I can feel your pain dear please go for Diagnosed for MRI first if the problem is grade 3 or above than have surgery.
"see what your body can do" 🤣 im hopin its ready! i think i had a stage 3 maybe stage 2 ac separation.. 20mph thrown off an e-scooter, landed on my shoulder. but im like 4 days out from the injury, and already back on an even bigger scooter lol. after 20+ videos, i dont think i need surgery. luckily
Oh man, good luck!! Go see a good PT and get some WORKKK put in. Worth it!
St least i can hold my lunchbox strap securely on the bone lol. How can i get relief whenever i agitate it? Sometimes its i. The ac area, or the shoylder blade in the back, and even up my neck
Is it normal to always have discomfort?
@@truedownmexican Absolutely could be helpful to see a skilled PT! You're going to want one who is knowledgeable in weight lifting -- we are not all created equal! Your pain referral you are describing absolutely could be improved with conservative care. It is 'normal', yes, but not normal to always have to live with it. Seek out a rockin PT! Happy to see if I know anyone near you. The raise in clavicle maybe not, but that is more cosmetic.
Could you please let me know what software you are using? Thanks
thank you; this video was extremely helpful. is there any way to confirm a tear versus a stretch to these ligaments? are there any physical tests to confirm which ligament is damaged and responsible for the elevated clavicle?
I am so glad it is helpful! I would definitely advise seeing a skilled physical therapist as there are tests they can do to assess for tear. It is very difficult to asses specific ligament, but if you have a very prominent elevation it is likely there is some significant ligamentous disruption.
Hi.. I just have ac joint separation 3 months ago. Because of bike accident.. I haven't gone through surgery.. I dont have any limitations on movement.. I can still lift heavy but still scared to go more than 25 30kg..
I am thinking about going through surgery but 1 of the doctors i met said like this, if i have no issues about it, its better not to go through surgery because sometimes after surgery i will have some limitations on movement.
I want to ask you what is plus minus of going through surgery..
And also if i am not going through surgery in long term what might happen to me.. Long term here i mean 5 10 20 years later. Now i am 40 years old..
According to my condition now i dont need to do surgery aside to correct bump on my shoulder.. Can you give me suggestions? Do i need surgery?
Hi , did you do the surgery? I have a type 2-3 separation on my AC joint for 4 months and no surgery but I can't lift weight and my shoulder peak hurts when i push it
It only took me 1 month to lift weighted object.. Last week i go to gym and do weight lifting.. Day after it feels hurts..
@@LithaIndoorSoccer It still hurts when you lift weights. right? Now I can just use 1.5KG db to do some simple movements
It will get better eventually.... I was lifting heavy weight that moment.. Doing arm raise with 8kg dumbell for 20 reps
I wish i just got surgery 3 years ago my experiences with multiple pts have been terrible
Great video
My clavicle was broken 20 years ago skating...in the past ,3,5 years I'm skating again. And sperated both shoulders, my right side is bad, there's like a horn sticking out. thing is my clavicle on that side, broken one... it's growing and twisting, pushing the horn more and more. And my shoulder is moving more and more forward.
It's done.... damn
Bone's response to trauma is generally laying down more bone. Bummer that it has progressed! Yay back to skating though! Not for the weak.
hi...does the top part of the ac raise up even in a grade 1 or 2....i have no gap in the area on xray but still have the bump, with pain and weakness in the whole shoulder/shoulder blade area....2weeks in...
Can a chiropractor fix this. And can this cause scapular winging
Hi Jeff.
Same story as urs..h
I had surgery 2 weeks back
How long 5ill pain goes and full range of motion comes back
Thank you for this video.
I have a a full gym at home and have been doing a lot of light workouts focusing on scapula and trap contraction. And very light delt work. I'm afraid my doctor released me early with almost zero advice. Basically said "it's been 4 weeks get back to your life". Even though I have a physical job, and a very active lifestyle. Thank you so much for the replies. I will get with a therapist. I have to get my life back. I can't handle this instability.
Already got surgery, but happy to stumble across this piece of information. What program is that? the ones i find online arent that complete

So sorry for the late reply! I would strongly suggest you see a good physical therapist!

I have type 3 with 20mm gap 4 days ago the pain is too much cant sleep for 4 nights..Chugging Panadols aadvice and help please
