- Painting on Book Pages - Why I do it and how using an old book as an art journal is a great way to save a book! I find many books from thrift stores with torn pages or even an old book of my dad's that I like to use.

When painting on the pages of a book or using a book as an art journal it is important to know how to prep the cover and pages before you begin. I usually use gesso (clear or white) or a matte medium.
Prepping the pages before you start just ensures that the pages will hold up when you are painting and it will prevent the paint from sinking in to the page.
You can use pens and pencil without prepping a page, otherwise I suggest using gesso or a matte medium before you begin. Both gesso and matte mediums are sort of rough on the surface so it allows all sorts of art materials to be used on top. From pencils to paint - you can layer over without worry as long as it is matte and not satin or glossy.

I am so glad you liked it! Thank you!
Thanks for the tips. I love your sugar skull mug!
Thank you!! 😊
Great video! There are these old books from my mother laying around that I didn’t want to throw away. Now I have something I can do with them that will also serve as a sweet reminder.
It is definitely a great reminder. There is something special about repurposing a loved one's old book. I really feel that the book I paint on is special because it was my dad's and since he is no longer around, it is a way to remember and stay connected, while also creating something new. Have fun with it!!
Fantastic! Great painting & great video!

Hi Krista just subscribed. love this idea

Hi there, was wondering if the heavy gel matte will work on a book page for watercolor also? Love your artwork BTW!❤
Hi, The matte medium (as well as gesso) creates a sealed surface so you won’t get quite the same result as you would on actual watercolor paper. But it does create a nice textured look. I usually stick to acrylic with heavy gel matte medium. I have tried watercolor with it but I didn't enjoy it as much - then again, I prefer acrylic paint (and occasionally gelly gouache) over any other kind of paint.
Thank you!!!
Hey i recently stumbled on your videos and i am so in love with your art style and the way you explaon everytbing.im now a subsriber and will keep waiting for new ones.....how about an online art class?
Hi, thank you so much! I do plan on having online art classes at some point. I am still learning all the ins and outs of doing video tutorials.
Hi! Thank you for the great idea! I was wondering if your book pages are slightly glossy or matte? Thanks in advance!
In this video the book pages are a semi gloss. I have another book that is matte. I think I prefer the semi gloss for when I use the book as an art journal. The books with matte pages I tear up and use as collage on my art. I also use acrylic paints when art journalling on old books (not watercolour paints). Thanks for watching!
@@KristaIreneArt Thank you so much for your quick response! I've been playing with making art in old books that I'm rescuing from local libraries and your videos are such a big inspiration :)
