- A hiatal hernia is when the top of the stomach gets displaced or herniates through the diaphragm and up into the chest cavity. Although most people with a hiatal hernia do not experience any symptoms, others may suffer from recurrent symptomatic reflux requiring medication or even surgery.
Surgical repair essentially involves pulling the stomach back into normal position fully below the diaphragm and making the opening in the diaphragm smaller. A mesh is then placed over the incision to reinforce the closure to minimize risk of hiatal hernia recurrence.
A hiatal hernia repair is often performed in combination with some variation of fundoplication whether Nissen or Toupet to further control severe reflux. In some cases, hiatal hernia surgery can also be combined with weight-loss surgery such as a sleeve gastrectomy.

I recently got diagnosed with this and my symptom are heartburn and slight check pain. Anyone gone thru surgery for the same? Want to know the experience
I do you see 😥
Has anyone with a larger hiatal hernia feel like the have a lump in their throat ?
No
Yes I’m having surgery now as it’s large and medication isn’t helping 😊
@@user-dj1kv9hq9khow are you now mam
I do! Definitely!
Yes!! 😢
Is it really such a risky surgery? Is there any medicines to avoid surgery? I have Gerd and heartburns
Try Reflux Medications (PPI, H2 Blockers, Antacids, Alginates)

Everything looked good until I see mesh introduced. There has to be a way without that .
I agree Donna. I also don't like the Nissen procedure either. Feels too far.
try toyota@@darkl3ad3r
What causes it
Overeating and then tap after a full meal
Could a 74-year-old man tolerate this surgery?
I’ve had hiatal hernia for over a year causes me a lot of pain and shortness of breath but the surgeon doesn’t want to operate. Really angers me
same fuciing thing im dealing with now. they just wanna get endoscope money from the insurance and give you pills.

Any person feeling nausea or vomiting suffering from hiatal hernia???
Yes, as well as acid reflux
Yes. I am going to try the yoga and self chiropractic manipulations. Mindfulness!
Yes. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I rush to the bathroom to vomit. At times, I vomit so much that a rash appears on my face.
@@nataliespencer1324wow that sucks. You should have surgery
Yes
This is Laparoscopy surgery?
Yes it is. Its a relatively simple procedure.
Just had this surgery this morning. Little pain from the gas but glad I got this done.
@@jeremybraswell2063 did your stomach go down and how’s the pain? I’m scheduled for this surgery on 3/31.
@@teniquag1 my stomach is still bloated 5 days later. Stomach pain isn’t bad at all. The shoulder, back and neck pain from the affected nerve that runs through the middle of the abdomen is tough but nothing Advil and Tylenol can’t handle. Trust me I’m a big baby when it comes to pain. The hardest part for me so far has been the liquid diet.
@@jeremybraswell2063 hey Jeremy, how is the recovery going? I’m 20 years old and have a hiatal hernia that sadly is very debilitating, I’ve had it since I was 16 and I decided I might get the surgery. And I’m pretty scared, maybe you could help me. Thank you in advance!
I’m only 17 with this, is it safe?
I feel your pain. 19 with this condition. Surgery only works for a few people, from what I’ve seen it’s not worth the risk/potential permanent side effects.
@@TheAlphazoneYTim 23. What makes you say that?
Yall im 23 been dealing with this crap since 18 with lpr and heartburn and many more symptoms
@@RandomPerson-yc4vm Because if it goes wrong in anyway, you’re done that’s it, no fixing it ever. The risk is your digestion is permanently ruined worst case scenario. Best case scenario you’re cured. But most of the time people say it doesn’t work because their symptoms come back eventually one way or another.
@@TheAlphazoneYT well you must realize that your stomach will never be normal ever again surgery or not. And do you really want to live the rest of your life with a hiatal hernia. What about barrets esophagus and esophagus cancer?
