  • Episode #219 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
    Hello Friends,
On this episode I haul up anchor at Makua Anchorage and attempt to round Kaena Point and make my way up the North Shore before the winter sets in. With a strong current running and and the trade winds blowing steady I found the passage impossible and tucked tail and ran back into he lee of Oahu.
I pointed Triteia's bow for Electric Beach at Kahe Point dropping the anchor in 20ft of water and taking in the sights of this unusual anchorage. Electric Beach is known for its snorkeling with the large cold war era power plant on the beach pumping its hot water discharge offshore, which attracts fish and other sea life.
Shortly after diving in I was met by a 6 ft sandbar shark, this was my first (known) swimming with a shark and it was both exhilarating and nerve wracking. Once at the cooling pipes I found out the sharks species from a free diver and swam with two other sand bar sharks and a wide variety of fish.
Once back at Triteia I heard the calls of dolphins and had a treat of a lifetime when a pod of Spinner Dolphins swam below and and past me as I watched them play underwater.

13:37 I thought you were panning to sharks on left pursuing tight group of dolphins, then realized they're all dolphins! They sound like children talking. Dolphins and whales must have an evolved language. What a special moment to have, found by taking the The Road Not (Typically) Taken. Subbed.

100% agree on snorkeling at Electric Beach. When I was there we swam with 3 green sea turtles, too, but we were maybe 30-70 yards out from shore. What an experience!

Electric beach from the top side looks gnarly with the smoke stacks and industrial look but the magic one finds underwater is epic. I tell people to stay in the water here when they visit, that’s where all the cool stuff is.

The really Cool thing is that with everything else happening, you still made your dream happen & it’s also been a selfless act for the rest of us as it’s turned out. I started watching you on the trip that you had to turn back on & admired your own peace with this too. But, the nicest thing during the middle of this is that you allowed us to see your tracking without charging everyone because that’s just YOU. You’re probably the only one too, Thank you for everything especially seeing through your eyes.......

Why couldn't you use your sails to get around the point? Wind direction? Surely you'd get more power than the motor with the sails. I remember one time I was out in my Hunter 27 in about 20-25kts of wind with 5-7 foot seas and the 8hp diesel couldn't make any headway, full throttle would just barley keep me in the same spot, couldn't make any progress back to my mooring. Going directly into the wind. But I just let the 110 jib out and tacked my way up a course and had no problem getting back. I'm sure you had some other reason though because you definitely have more sailing experience than me

  • @protonneutron9046

pardon my ignorance; are you using rangefinder against charts to find best depth for anchorage? Or so swinging doesn't take you into shoal water?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  2 роки тому +2

I was referencing a guide book that suggested the best range to keep me off of the reefs when I swing under anchor. Ended up staying 200yrds off in 28ft of water and it was perfect

"Happy Holidays James" (smiles & hug) I was very surprised 2 C U swimming with the dolphins & SHARKS.......?!? Did U KNOW that dolphins will have certain areas to give birth 2 their Babies? These "areas" R comprised mostly of areas with WHITE SAND BOTTOMS. There is a place on the Big Island called Kealakekua Bay that is a Dolphin Birthing area. This area is an area that has a mostly SANDY WHITE BOTTOM.
I am not really sure "Y" these Dolphins prefer 2 have their Babies in these areas.....however, I'd venture out on a limb and guess that >>> "That White SANDY Bottom" might have something 2 do with it?
Please B Aware of "where" U snorkel James.....it seems 2 matter with the Dolphins where They" feel is a safe place. I KNOW U definitely have GREAT KARMA....but, there's that ol' saying >>>>"Don't Mess With Mother Nature"....(wink).
"Thank You James" 4 taking us on these wonderful ocean Adventures. (BIG hug)
    GOD BLESSES ALL.

With a clear sandy bottom theres less chance of predatory sharks getting in close using cover during or immediately after birthing. Especially if the rest of the pod is close by.
Dolphins also hunt for food hidden in the sand by using their beaks. Flatfish and rays that i know of.

@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Holy WoW !!! "Thank You" for sharing that information (Hug) I'd heard about the "sand thing" many years ago, but either I had forgotten the "Y" or maybe I never knew "y".
