➡️ Want a crash course on just about every technique ever played on a bass? I'm willing to bet not many songs come close to showcasing it the way this track does. John Myung's approach to bass playing is forever embedded in my DNA, and I've lost count of how many times I've watched every Dream Theater DVD as I was growing up. "Metropolis, Pt. 1" is pretty much hailed as a hallmark classic from the band, being a standout track from their 1992 breakthrough-album "Images & Words". In this week's video, I dissect everything showcased here from bass harmonics, two-handed tapping, some secrets behind both, and just about everything I can catch as this crazy track flies by!

I believe John Myung is one of the most underrated bass players of our time. He has created so many incredible bass parts to so many great epic Dream Theater's songs, he deserves a lot mor recognition. He is one of our most precious living music legends, period.
he's the unsung hero of dream Theater...
non musicians have no idea just how good he actually is.... he's a musical prodigy and criminally underrated....
Underrated? Wowww u live in the cave bro. John myung is maestro.
Agreed he’s absolutely awesome
I think it’s because he likes to keep to himself more than any other thing, he is widely recognized but he doesn’t seem to like going into the spotlight as much hence there is no material for his fans to really share and comment on
It’s crazy to me how hard John hits the strings while playing so intricately. Just like Geddy Lee
It actually doesn’t make sense to me really - I agree. Seems fatiguing - but hey, they’re legends for a reason.
@@LowEndUniversity The key is to let physics do all the work for you, while you remain as relaxed as possible
He doesn't really put much muscle into it, but he swings his fingers pretty fast like a hammer. Incredible player!
@@LowEndUniversityNot to veer off the subject (new to channel) LOVE IT! A video review of Mother Man off of Unquestionable Presence by Atheist by the late Roger Patterson would be absolutely amazing! His fills were just absolutely beautiful!
I loved Metropolis Pt. 2. Fatal Tragedy is probably one of his best bass lines (especially the ass run at the end).
Yea he has a sik bassline on that one! Also his basslines on the Majesty demo was shredding! Especially the solo on WDADU the killing hand solo at the end just sick!
Fatal Tragedy was the first song I ever heard from SFAM - still blows me away to this day. It's so....different than so many of their other songs, I can't put my finger on it (in the best way possible). Just a killer vibe.
5th row, stage left for this show. Drove up to NYC from NC for 1 night just to see this at RCMH! I'll never forget it...
😭 I've encountered about 4-5 people over the years who all were there. Everyone unanimously has the same feelings you do. As much as I love "Live at Budokan", there is something about the Score DVD that is just leagues above the rest. They just captured something real. I mean, everything from the editing, the production - it's hard to put my finger on.
@@LowEndUniversity The acoustics of RCMH, the pageantry, the orchestra, celebrating their history... In their home town. It was just an energy and vibe. All the stars aligned. It was truly special. Then you throw in just the LIVE component. It was totally worth it!
I was there too. Absolutely spectacular. So glad I went. I saw the LSFAM show too. I’m in a few spots on that DVD, and you can hear me whistling here and there in between songs in this recording! 😁😎
I was there, still to this day my favorite concert ever!
John Myung is the reason I play Bass! He’s my bass god and always will be! I was fortunate enough to have teen them a ton of times my first show of their ms was the Metropolis 2000 tour here in Tampa best $25 of my life!! I remember when Myung went to the Bongo bass I was Soo happy! Myungs right hand technique has been the center of my playing! His progressive bass concepts VHS changed my life!! They changed Prog music forever!I I think people who are confused by the 3 finger technique are trying to do “ I M R” fingers instead of the opposite “Ring middle Index, it’s just a more natural flow after “the 3rd arrives” it’s goes the hell down! Lol one of my favorite DT sections ever!!
Him, Cliff, and Geddy are completely in my DNA forever, and were instrumental (pun intended) on my learning curve. I'd have killed to see DT back in those days, only found out about them in 2005ish and finally saw them live in 2009 (they were still awesome, but the SFAM days are where it's at). I ALSO grew up on Progressive Bass Concepts - that VHS tape is still sitting in this room!
@@LowEndUniversity awesome!! Still a great time to see them! The last time I seen them was the Astonishing tour and it was absolutely incredible!! I still have that VHS LOL it’s a gem! Also Stuu Hamm Pop, slap and tap, absolutely life changing!!
@@LowEndUniversity I desperately wish John would've gone more into his right-hand technique on that video. It fascinates me that he uses both 1+2 and 1+3 as picking patterns, but he says nothing about how or why. I wish he'd do another instructional about his own particular style. Billy Sheehan and Alex Webster have both broken down their technique in books and videos, but John Myung remains a mystery to me.
This album literally got me into progressive metal. Such an amazing and important song to prog rock period. Loved this video man!
I had a friend telling me he was just as great or better than myung because he could play all of his bass lines. Yes, sure buddy, creating and playing is the same exact thing. Just like inventing a car is the same as assembling a car. Lol.
Ha!
Can he play them live for 3h straight?
Coming from someone who’s been practicing his stuff for years, that is a real dumb narcissistic statement to make. You are NOT as good as someone because you can just play their parts. I would be willing to think he would have some of the same problems I have with songs like “beyond this life” “Dark eternal night” the stamina. I play dream theater about an hour and a half a day and my left forearm needs breaks in some songs it’s really tough!!
What a comprehensive breakdown! Made me appreciate things I never noticed before. Thanks for the video Mark!
Glad it was helpful! Appreciate that Palaash!!
This is amazing man, thank you for the detailed breakdown! I am not even a bass player but this is really fun to watch
That’s such a cool comment - part of my goal for these videos is to inspire people who don’t even play bass, or even play music! Inspire them purely on the music alone, in an effort to highlight some amazing bands. Appreciate the kind words!
@@LowEndUniversity No prob! I really like that you demo some of the bass riffs in the breakdown. I play guitar and am a massive DT fan, but there are so many little nuances I’ve never noticed about Myung’s parts that you helped to illuminate in this vid. Really found the bass chords part cool especially!
I really appreciate that, man!
Beautiful bass bro! Great job breaking down the MASTERS!🙏🏻🤟🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love how they played the entire intro here, as opposed to usually doing the first part from tape.
Thank you: I recently started learning Tapping, and John Myung is my study subject for learning how to tap. I'm glad someone else is breaking this complexity down.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks bro. I love this so much.
Cheers bro!
Great song. Met Johnny Myung & John Petrucci back when awake came out they did an in-store appearance at local record theater here in Buffalo. Great guys I talked gear with Johnny for awhile. He asked what kind of setup I was using..Ampeg SVTs been using them forever 2 8x10s switch between rack mount SVT 4pro & classic heads. Anyway I love harmonics to but then again I grew up watching my friend Billy Sheehan play local bars high School dances lol. Glad I found your channel.
Really cool to hear all that Joe. I've never owned a rig that big but it sounds awesome, and bet it was absolutely monstrous-sounding!
@joe martucci
I used to play in a band with a guy from Buffalo, in the Binghamton area. He always talked about Talas and Billy Sheehan. Said Billy changed his diapers! Lol. His name is Charlie Brown.
@@MichaelMaxwell747 not familiar with him Binghamton area is about 5 hours from here.
@@LowEndUniversity it did but all tone not so much volume.
@@joemartucci4786 Yes he was born and raised in Buffalo but I met him in Binghamton. I just thought it was so ludacris that he always said that about Billy changing his diapers!
John Myung recorded the album "Images and Words" with a 4 string bass , a 4 string Spector bass..
ua-cam.com/video/GLkbsweQ1Tg/v-deo.html
He sure did! 💫
This is my favorite DT song. When I finally got the Images and Words CD I played it in my car for six months straight. Wish they mixed the bass higher.
This song is a legend! Fav song ❤️.. and this is my fav kind of reaction vid! Playing and reacting and analyzing at the same time! Thank you ( Pardon my bad English)
Appreciate your kind words!
Thanks for the video Mark! I also bought a six string because of John Myung (Actually two, a Thumb and a Corvette) and was blown away after watching the Live DVD of SFAM in NY 2000 and Live DVD Tokyo 1993 for the very first time in 2003 and 2004. I just couldn't believe how good they are...an almost unhuman way of playing...very inspiring and frustating at the same time.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching, and I couldn’t agree more. I wanted to do this song from that 2000 DVD but couldn’t find it. Cheers!
This song still stands as one of the best things I've ever heard, and it never ceases to amaze. Their age when they wrote it blows me away.
I remember when I bought that DVD, I freaking love it
score is BY FAR the absolute best live show they ever recorded.... its flawless
six degrees is a masterpiece.....
I was able to be on the tour this concert was a part off. It was so awesome!
the first highly advanced bassist I ever became aware of! I remember learning the tapped bass solo on guitar when I was younger. I'd highly recommend checking out Doug Shreeve on the session video to Virgil Donati's 'Red Air', loads of techniques to dissect
Great advice on the 3 finger technique 🙏
Thank you! It ain't that bad to learn!
I believe I remember reading/hearing when this came out that Jordan composed the orchestra parts. Jordan liked to use a lot and still like to use a lot of string and horn sounds and had great ideas for how the orchestra could compliment the song rather than just mimic the band. I always liked the way the horns sound in this performance and I think a lot of it is because they stand out without sounding out of place. If you haven't yet, you should watch the DVD for these old live shows (Score, Live: Scenes from New York and maybe Budokan) listen to the band commentary for some cool stories about the performance or even the writing process.
That's really cool, and sounds absolutely accurate. I know he did the same with the orchestra parts on Six Degrees and wrote a lot of those themes. His musicianship is absolutely mindblowing - the guy is an endless well of composing. And, believe me, I've listened to all those documentaries and commentaries dozens of times : )
I've often said that John Myung is as underrated a bass player as Alex Lifeson as a guitarist.
He should be more upfront. His lines are amazing
This is by far and away my favorite era of Dream Theater. My first DT album Octavarium. And I've always said that album is by musicians for musicians. As a casual listener the album is great. But if you know music theory it goes to whole other level. The amount of musical Easter eggs on that album is insane and it isn't limited to just the music.
And for this video of Metropolis one thing that has always made me laugh is if you look at Portnoy’s kit just above one of his crashes their is a mirror. And it's aimed right at the orchestra conductor. That had me falling out of my chair laughing the first time I saw it. Because as an orchestra player the one thing that is drilled into your head is watch the conductor.
Had to watch this again, if I’m correct I do believe the “live in Tokyo” version shows Myung playing the crazy part at the end better, if not it’s probably the Live Scenes in NY DVD, Master Myung!
Great video and love the band. I totally agree that this is the pinnacle of Dream Theater.
Minor correction, the comment was made that Rush and Yes never played with an orchestra. That’s not quite accurate. While true in the 90’s, the Clockwork Angels album and tour featured an [admittedly smaller] 8 person string ensemble. It added so much.
Thanks Brett, I actually forgot about that as far as Rush. I'll have to check it out!
I saw them in Atlanta on this tour. They opened for Megadeth. The venue was great and the show was of course awesome. Both bands were on top of their game that night. I'm also almost positive that heard Jame's natural voice over the PA at one point. 😮 He was SO loud in that venue.
Really cool - was that Gigantour?
That album is amazing. Early peak in their careers, perhaps. Played at a level where I could still understand and decompose the music :) Vs some more recent ones that go a bit above my head.
labrie is amazing in this dvd... everything about this show is magical...
its a 11/10....
In 2017 he did the run after the bass solo with the guitar and keyboard in unison. Just showing how much of a monster he is on the strings.
he played guitar you mean?
In terms of music nerd, John Myung was an ultra geek! Given that, it makes his bass lines even more difficult (and impossible) to interpret, recreate, or analyze! He might be given his own category!
Great video Mark..thanks for doing this. Great choice of performance as well. It was after Score that Labrie started losing some power in his voice.
Thanks so much! Yeah, I agree. It’s unfortunate, but I’ll always be a fan. This era was killer though.
@@LowEndUniversity 100% agree...I think the latest DT is the best Mangini-era album.
Making a goal of Monday through Friday I'm not using my middle finger. If I had a nickel...😅
Another great video!
But Monday through Friday is when I find myself using my middle finger the most...
Also, love this song. Great tips and analysis!
🤣 Amazing comment, I have to agree on this one... and - thank you so much for the kind words! Appreciate you watching - see you around!
John Myung has pumped biceps on his fingers.
Great video! Dream Theater is the best and Scenes From A Memory is at the top for me too. Peace.
Thank you Tim!
@@LowEndUniversity That Limited Edition orange vinyl of SFAM is 🔥
I love it, and just HAD to have a copy. Ha!
@@LowEndUniversity Kinda feeling the same way now.
Such an important album for Prog Metal. That being said, Fates Warning were banging out heavy Prog for years before this album.
Fates warning is the most underrated band
Metropolis Pt2 Live Scenes from New York probably one of the best of their live performances ever. Check it out.
I have been a John Myung fan from day one I heard them. I've owned each one of his Yamahas. The JM6 which was the green one, and the JM2 which was the Plum Pearl Metallic. Didn't really like either one which I heard John didn't either. I did however manage to get my hands on a limited Edition Emerald Sparkle Green Music Man Bongo 6 HS. Love that bass very much!
Same, Gary! I really liked his Yamaha era, I thought the basses (and corresponding tones on the records) were some of his best, particularly his sound on Falling Into Infinity. A buddy of mine had the red JM and was selling it years ago, and I didn't snag it in time. I'd definitely love to own one for posterity's sake. Thanks for watching!
No, "Pull Me Under" got them on the map. Played a lot on WAAF in Boston. 107.3
30:50 TARKUS!
Need some Rush reactions now. La Villa Strangiato would be ❤
Rush is on my list! Stay tuned!
The first tapping part you talked about is kind of like a Bach thing. It’s weird because he’s shifting with the chord changes along with the band. But that static B, if you think of it as the melody his harmony is shifting under it in the way that Bach would play with bass notes to change the tonality of a melody. In this case it’s pretty simple but in the context of the song it changes the feel completely and that static B really ties all the different chords together and really highlights the changes. Simple but actually very clever.
Not many players use rest strokes and free strokes. You use rest strokes when you go through the string to mute the one below. You use free strokes for harmonics and chords. Awesome!
Oh yeah, love it! I learned this exact concept from watching Myung when I was younger. Thanks for stopping by Randy!
You don't use your pinky too? I'm new to bass coming from guitar. Finger style on guitar I use all fingers and thought bass would be the same. Hearing that a lot of people only use two is a bit shocking. huh.
1:17-1:27 Not surprising when you look like Train of Thought-era Petrucci. Great video! 👏
Haha. I kinda do here, I guess...and thank you!
@@LowEndUniversity All in good fun, haha
I always feel glad to have bought WDADU as a kid. Back then it was sold on cassettes and it got me right into DT. Few years later PMU was all over the radios
I know the whole purpose of this video series is to analyze/reaction to the composer prowess but I would say I never really captured the whole technical intense passages of this song until I saw this cover:
ua-cam.com/video/r28LLqyXBKs/v-deo.html
These guys used to have an amazing project called Bad Salad, sadly haven't seen anything for a while from them. Loving your content, keep up the amazing reviews!
After that comment about the 4ths section in Jesus Christ Superstar, I would love to see you cover Tarkus by ELP! That intro is insane!
Great suggestion!
6 degrees is one of their best produced albums.
Absolutely agree. I’ll die on that hill. Amazing variety of tones, engineering, spaciousness in the master out - perfection for me. Especially “Blind Faith”, which is my favorite DT song.
i played with portnoy at the edge of the stage at a show 98... 😊😊
Hell's kitchen! Excelente!
Can all four fingers be used?
It would be cool if you got in Jackson's ear about making a 6 string spectra
It’s my goal! I’d be all over that thing. 🙏🏼
2 minuts in and ... that is you soooo young
Haven’t heard much Dream Theater but to me they sound like Queensrÿche married iron maiden as far as the storytelling
26:22 he slaps and leaves the finger there. It's a muted slap.
It's a really cool move!
I use all four of my fingers of my right/picking, hand.
Super cool!
Images and words was recorded with a 4 string bass.
Yep! Spector!
Petrucci has been growing his hair, beard and forehead… and can say that because so am I… the forehead that is…
Big leap from Mylie Cyrus. Was getting worried there 😅
Ha - do note, I'll cover all styles/genres! If it's got a great bass part, it's on the table : )
My only problem with Myung is his sound live. Out of all my favorite bass players, I hear him the least amount on his solos and that pisses me off!
🤣🤣
You just have to practice like a job. Play a bunch of four hour shows. Ih and warm down after the show!
I find their mixes frustrating because myung is so low in the mix… often I cannot hear what he’s doing clearly. I like bass more forward in the mix, porcupine tree, Duran Duran etc…
Can I add that since John went to musicman the bass sound has been lost. The dynamic and clarity is gone........ The Yamaha bass was really smooth and present, had the highs when needed and the presence was there, now its just gone. It has to me anyway.
everybody became teacher on youtube :)
This album has the loudest hi-hat known to man. This super shit mix has bugged me since it came out. There are alot of dubs on James voice, but I dont know if they dubbed the other guys as well. Doubt Myung needs any dubs at all, he is a robot.
Sorry I forgot to mention the horrible simulated hall reverb on it all.
I think it's an endearing production style that speaks a lot about the era, and I like it for that reason. It's a really signature sound I associate with that record. In some parts of the record, it's quite nice in my opinion - others, it can sound a little out of balance. When the 'Greatest Hits' remixes for I&W came out, I just couldn't get used to them...haha.
You make nice videos but I'd like to make a comment. If a segment is eight measures long, you have a tendency to play the first four and then stop and start commenting. My suggestion is to let the whole segment play. Then go back and highlight the part you want to comment on. I'm not saying play the whole song. But just let the whole segment play. Because when you stopped it after only a couple of measures, it gets frustrating because I'm just starting to enjoy it when you stop it. For example let the whole bass solo play and then go back and comment on different parts of the bass solo. 😊
William, I appreciate the feedback! I’m constantly working to get the best balance possible between commentary and the content. This was I think my 5th or 6th video many months ago, I’m into the 30s now and have worked hard on it. Hope you can check out some of the more recent ones - I did one for “The Glass Prison” last week! 🙏🏼
@@LowEndUniversity You're welcome, and thanks for having such a good attitude about it! Also, I didn't realize this was an older video. I'll have to check out your new one! 😃
Of course! Always looking to make the most enjoyable videos I can. I appreciate your other comment on the newer one for "The Glass Prison". Cheers!
Portnoy is back as of yesterdy!!!!!!!
I'm old. I was fortunate enough to see the album live in the twin cities live in real time.
Jealous!!!
