    I love how you can hear the Leaves on the Vine Motif. Fun fact apparently since Leaves on the Vine was the last thing Iroh's original VA Mako did Greg Baldwin the actor that replaced him refuses to ever sing Leaves on the Vine because it's not his song and it belongs to Mako. Also the portrait that they used for Lu Ten is actually a portrait of young Mako

    I don't know if someone has said it before or if you guys' noticed it, but every time Iroh firebends, you can hear a sound similar to a dragon's roar. That's so genious given his title as dragon of the west.

    Iroh and Zuko (and to an extent Azula too) really are this whole, entire show. That scene with the earthbender soldier followed by the funeral scene are my favorite moments in this entire first season.

    3:58 Oh my God, I just had a heartbreaking eiphany: There has to be a deeper reason behind Aang and Katara naming their first child after King Bumi, and the animated movie about the adult Gaang coming out in October of next year HAS to have Aang & Katara either engaged or (already?) married to each other in it judging by their outfits in that one leaked concept art...what if the first Bumi fucking DIES in the movie?

  • @justinehercthehuman
    @justinehercthehuman 10 місяців тому +47

    I actually like the change on Bumi's character. People are saying "they changed Bumi" but when we want Ep 3 Jet's comment on the king being corrupt, then this wouldn't work. Plus it's good that we see both Bumi's childish nature and bitter side as well having to be in a century war. What makes this great now is that for the next seasons, we get to see Bumi change from what Aang reminds him of, his young self.

      No issue with the angle on the character, the make up was just bizarre and he looked like shit. Good performance, interesting angle that fits with this specific iteration of the show, he just looks terrible when there’s a lot of folks that could have been better cast

    • @TopNotchWatcher87
      @TopNotchWatcher87 10 місяців тому +5

      I agree with what Sean says here. The perspective makes sense, he just looks bad man, like weird bad. I really back the argument of his attitude change though, this show is being more realistic, that’s the more realistic angle.

    • @travellerinthedark
      @travellerinthedark 10 місяців тому +2

      I wouldn't have minded, but it contributes to the repetitiveness of Aang's conversations with adults through the season - every past Avatar, every wise elder, all seem to have the same scolding message to impart on Aang. It ends up being rather tiring and stunts Aang's character growth.

    19:37 White is traditional dress for funerals in Korea… the show makes some ethnic winks in how the nationstates are characterized: Fire nation is vaguely chinese/korean, Kyoshi Island is okinawan/ainu, Omashu is heavily mughal

    It's really important to understand the difference between OG bumi and this bumi bumi. OG bumi was old and eccentric. That's all we know about him. He's wise and fun loving. There is no mention of war on his side. But this bumi has been actively put in situation of war and he made some choices that has burdened him and he felt betrayed because his friend and the avatar disappeared. The hundred years of war is considered responsibility of avatar, and bumi feels the same way. They showed that his choices and his age had toll on his mind and he was hopeless. Aang pulling him out of it brough the bumi back and he's close to OG show. There's something you need to understand about this show. They are not giving characters the naturally gifted stuff, but they want to actually bring their qualities by time. People are often complaining about katara. She was living in secluded tribe with constant fear. She has gone through a tragedy, but how does she perfectly articulate her pain and become perfect empath to everyone? OG portrayed her gifted with that, this show is trying to build it up for her that she learns through experiences like jet. You'll see them more in line with Og characters in next season.

    Visually, Bumi was probably a hard sell for a lot, but he was really weird looking even by the standards of the cartoon. There really is never going to be a 100% accurate, faithful way to translate something so specific to an animated medium to live action, but that's just my thought

    I gotta ask did everyone tear up because of the song or because of the situation. Those are 2 different things, and most people say they cry or whatever because of the song and knowing the story behind it from the original. Take it out and replace it and does everyone still cry? Or say someone watches this for the first time no Avatar experience. They're not gonna know the song, so it won't even register nostalgicly.

    We are not that certain if Iroh is a war "criminal" as we don't know what international laws this universe has on what constitutes as a "war crime". Plus, we don't know what Iroh really did. He might have killed many innocents who were not even armed or soldiers. He may have done forms of torture to get information. But since we see him as he is now, we are biased to think that probably he didn't do such crimes. Maybe it's more on the length of his siege in Ba Sing Se and the amount of kills he has had.

    • @uffish2
      @uffish2 10 місяців тому +1

      Yes, this. I saw someone making this point elsewhere, and it brought me around about this scene. We know he was a successful general and a great soldier. He definitely killed a lot of enemy soldiers and led a hard siege, but he doesn't seem to be experiencing the sort of guilt you'd expect for the truly vile stuff.

    Jacked older South Asian actors? You're gonna get different looks than animation when you decide to hire actual Asian actors. The only actor they could have hired for that role to fit the animation is Kumail Ali Nanjiani. They hired a fit younger South Asian actor who put on some weight for the role but didn't go full TRT. I think his take on Bumi both teaching Aang and being inspired by him was the more important part of the performance. And really everything was gonna pale in comparison to the Iro/Zuko flashback stuff.
