The Great Mahalia Jackson this one sends chills down my spine. God help us overcome sin and wickedness. Walking away from the mic wow this woman was Superwoman of gospel music.
The high pitched opera style opening to this song is not how she usually performed it and showed a part of her vocal range that many probably didn't know she had. I'm guessing this was from her 1967 European tour, making her about 56 years old. I wonder how many diva singers (Mariah, Whitney, Christina, Celine, etc) could pull this off in their late 50's?
At least Celine in her 52 was still extraordinary, I hope she will surprise us even later. Age has not always been limitation for vocalists and there are much more fine examples. And lasting voice does not necessarily mean superiority of singer. Mahalia is very special, no doubt!
@@fzpe856 Have you ever heard Mariah's song Heavenly? If she didn't have the nodules and would've taken better care of her vocals she definitely would've opened the same. She's a huge gospel fan from Richard Smallwood to The Clark Sisters. I agree with you regarding Celine and Christina though and of course Whitney was anointed and raised in the church.

I read a biography about her and she did not live much longer after this performance. She was sick for real and kept going as long as she could. RIP.
