standard 00 buck and riot barrels have head/should sized holes in the pattern at a mere 30m. So they can't reliably hit a cover user. Ditto if a man is head on prone towards them, wearing a helmet. They can't shoot thru soft armor, or even a windshield, car door or tire, at more than 10m and then only at nearly 90 Degree angles..12 ga shells are 10 rds to the lb. So you're stuck not carrying more than 50 shells. How many of each will be birdshot , buckshot or slugs, hmm? I'd not bother with buckhot at all, actually. Id carry #2 birdshot and a few slugs and aim the birdshot at the head-neck.

shotguns suck because they are loud, have a lot of flash at night, shoot expensive, heavy, bulky, fragile ammo. They can't be used waf with one hand/arm, can't be had as an 80% finished parts kit. They lack even decent range, penetration, are awkward to carry spare ammo for, are slow to reload, lack decent mag capacity. Nobody needs to hit birds in the air or running game for shtf. That's kid stuff. What you need for shtf is to be QUIET and able to use 22lr and 223, since those calibers are by FAR the most likely to be replaceable. You want GOOD 223 silencer on a shorty AR-15 with a 22lr conversion unit, scope OPTION, trigger job, anti-cant bubble-level, 60 gr Nosler Partition softpoints, 1in 9" rifling twist, skinny 10.5" barrel, 60 gr Aquila subsonic 22's. You dont have to PRACTICE with the expensive stuff, just testfire it, know change the sights to zero with it, (or not care that the practice ammo is "off" a bit.

Sure, Cook in bag meals IF you're talking about a bugout bag. If bugging in or talking long term I would say no. Shotguns are another thing that depends on the situation. Tavor TS12-15 shot, 18" barrel bullpup for inside work. You still need to be accurate but if you miss by 1/2" with a rifle it's a miss, 1/2" with a shotgun and you will still take half of their head off. I'm not talking about someone that must choose 1 firearm, if you can only have 1 then an AR makes sense.

you can't be bothered hunting small game for shtf. That stuff is barely worth trapping. You can't be out and about in daylight, nor show a normal light at night. Those things will get you shot. I silenced, subsonic 22lr has the same 125m outside range as a 12 ga slugs and that' IS you have an optical sight or rifle-type sights. If all you have is a front bead sight, your max effective range on a head on prone man is 40m. with MAYBE 60m with slugs. That's nothing. I can brain you from 60m with a silenced 22. If I hold the bolt shut, that 22 wont be heard from 50 ft away. The slug and buck are expensive, over $1 per shot, so no, you dont practice enough with slugs to be much good with them. shotgun trigger pulls suck, too. Choosing a shotgun is like choosing a bolt action, the mark of ignorance
