This plane, F1-102, was one of the 3 initial Triplanes made. This one was given to Richthofen to evaluate. F1- 103 was issued to Werner Voss for evaluation. Both pilots loved the Triplane which was nimble, but tough to fly. Voss was killed in his Triplane while dogfighting with 6 or 7 British SE5a fighters. I believe in September 1917. He was twenty years old.

And Kurt Wulff was killed, in THIS triplane, Sept 15. MvR was on leave and Wulff was just getting back from a wound leave and eager to try the plane. His very first fight was with some Sopwith Camels and one of them shot him down. Voss was shot down Sept 23, and there was no more 'frontline evaluation."
The British pilot (appears at 5:08, left of screen) is my grandfather. He was 21 at the time. It is amazing the way they laughed and chatted - having just tried to kill each other - then all went off to have breakfast together, before he was handed over to the authorities and sent to POW camp. Not only the plane had been hit; a bullet passed through the sleeve of my grandfather's jacket.

1:45 when he removes his cap, you can see that Richtofen has some sort of string securing a patch to the top of his head. He had been struck in the head by a stray bullet fired from a British 2-seat aircraft, and crash-landed his plane while mostly unconscious. The bullet smashed a trench in his skull, and he suffered severe headaches as a result of broken pieces of skull pinching his brain. Doctors had to remove the broken pieces on several occasions.
Many believe that the traumatic injury he suffered caused him to develop severe tunnel vision, which may explain why he chased the Canadian pilot's plane at low altitude over enemy anti-aircraft fire, leading to his death from a rifle bullet through his chest. Captain Brown was originally credited for that, as he had briefly pursued Richtofen's plane, but the claims were already highly disputed at the time Brown was awarded.
Contrary to popular belief, Richtofen did not go down in flames or crash and explode on the ground after being shot. He actually executed a sharp turn and attempted to bring his plane back to friendly lines before crash-landing. His plane was mostly intact after landing but was severely damaged by souvenir hunting Australian soldiers. It is believed that it was restored and put on display in a museum after the war, but was destroyed during the chaos of WWII.
I'd also read that he suffered from severe bouts of depression after the accident, yet even with that he was still as efffective as he'd ever been.

Josias von Leiswolf Almost correct. The triplane he crashed in, 425/17 was souvenired heavily, and was not reconstructed.
One of his triplanes, 152/17 survived him and was placed on display in the Zeughaus Museum in Berlin. It was damaged by allied bombing on 22/23 November 1943 and it's remains were probably destroyed by Russian troops at the end of the war.

Hey he preyed on less manouverable British 2 seater reconnaissance aircraft, he made the mistake of getting too close to the observer's machine gun and took a bullet in his skull. He died, we won Germany lost. That's war.

A little bit of trivia. In 1967 I was assigned, as a US Army captain, to Mainz, Germany to an installation that used to be a German Kaserne. The square in front was named the Baron Manfred Von Richtofen Platz. Now I knew that all Nazi names were expunged but it seems that the "Red Baron," who preceded all that, was held in such high regard, by all soldiers, that his name was left alone.
Maybe because he lived long before there was such a thing as a Nazi in Germany

MvR scored his 60th and 61st victories in Fok. F.I 102/17 after which he went on leave, turning this plane over to Ltn. Kurt Wolff, who was killed flying this plane. 102/17 carried the factory paint scheme of Green streaked over light blue doped linen with a green cowling, struts and wheel covers. Subsequent tripes were delivered in the factory scheme, after which the Jasta 11 colors of red cowling, struts and wheel covers were painted. Personal markings were in addition to the Jasta colors.
All the preparation getting his gear on with the flight crew member securing his seat belt harness...all without a parachute. The Germans donned them, but only during the last six weeks of the war. German Ace 'Ernst Udet' had his life saved flying with one during his WW1 service.
Excellent video. It’s well restored. Von Richtoffen was of noble birth, as were most flight officers. One can see by his mannerisms his upbringing.

Richthofen gave it to his friend Kurt Wollf who died in it, and Voss died in FI 103.

In the 'briefing' scene, it obvious that they can't take it seriously. Soldiers have always made poor actors in such times. Nothing ever changes in that regard!

A slim, trim and fit Hermann Goering has a short cameo on this film. He should have quit while he was ahead.
If this film was taken on 3rd September 1917, this was the day on which MvR won his 61st victory - a Sopwith Pup of 46 Squadron RFC flown by Lt. AF Bird. Lt. Bird was attacked by two triplanes at 14,000 at 6.35am, his engine was badly shot up and he crashed into a tree on forced landing, being slightly wounded in the crash, and was taken prisoner. Another pup of the same patrol was also shot down, by Lt. Mohnicke, and that pilot was captured, too.
So good chance that the British pilot shown is either Lt. Bird or Lt. Mohnicke if this was actually filmed on Sept. 3rd 1917
Very interesting. Apparently the damaged plane was shot down perhaps by R? The man in a different uniform was probably the English or French pilot. Uniform looks English to me.

Gotta love those WWI rotary radial engines. The crankshaft was fixed to the airframe while the propeller was bolted to the crankcase and cylinders which rotated with the prop as you can see at 4:00 . Since they didn't need additional cooling system components they had a higher power-to-weight ratio than the liquid cooled engines used in other fighters such as the SE5a. Unfortunately there were some significant disadvantages associated with this type.
One of the disadvantages was that it constantly spat oil out as it ran. With the engine spinning it was impossible to contain the oil in an an oil pan. And the oil used was Castor Oil which makes on nauseous when ingested. The pilots would be sprayed with the oil while in flight.
I’m sure it’s a typo, but that’s a rotary engine, not a radial. And for further clarification, it’s not a Wankel.
@@kyflyboy965 Yes it is a radial engine. The cylinders point outwards radially from the centerline of the crankshaft just like a conventional radial engine. I often say rotary radial to avoid confusion with the Wankel.

I have a motorized bike and I have a red gas tank with the German cross and some Red Baron decals. I'd love to throw them on my bike but considering the current political climate I'm afraid I'd be sending the wrong message with my choice. I'm going with the P40 Tomahawk look instead.

In fairness, the airplane was not a significant military factor during WWI - it was a ground war first and foremost. Even today, wars are mostly fought and won on the ground.

@Josias , the plane was totally destroyed by Aussie 's taking it down to the fame . Many items are in Austrialian (sic) souvenir hunters> They made many items out of them. A great and correct ending is by P.J. Carisella and James W. Ryan 'Who Killed the Red Baron?' paperbacks are at places l9ike Amazon. Films and other books have came up with the same ending!

I would like to comment on the color of 102 as well as 103 (Voss' plane). I have always been under the impression these two planes were olive streaked over an entire light blue plane...while all the regular production DR-1's were Olive streaked over a natural clear coated fabric and only the underside of the plane was light blue. Does anybody know anything about this?

That sure looks like Goering frame left at 3:05, but he wasn't awarded the Pour le Merite until May 1918.
David Malone I did not see anyone in that final scene that looked like Goering. I did see one officer with really pronounced cheek bones (like Goering), but looks more like one of the pilots from the briefing scene. Anthony Fokker made all these films and that party scene with Goering looks like it was accidentally spliced in. Videography (or whatever it was called back then) was a very big hobby for Fokker. Some of the best German video footage in WWI was his. Yes, he’s the goofy looking one teasing the British pilot.
