- For the 2017 Reno National Championship Air Races, Joel Swager took the reigns of the mighty 4000 hp, 4360 cubic inch, 28 cylinder beast known as Dreadnought. This plane has been racing at Reno since the 1980's and is a previous Gold champion, in this short video we see the Sanders team take her up for an early week evening test flight to check the systems out at power, and then a few days later the team goes out and lays down the 3rd fasted qualifying speed.

I think it was the Cleveland air races where Sea Furies were in their element being a lot more long legged than the Bearcats and Mustangs as the course had longer straights, so I believe, which is where the Sea Furies had the power to take all on the course.Soaring Tractor you need an early night mate.Who designed the engine in the Mustang and then had it licence built?

That second canopy weighs the same as a P51.

Well she's done racing at Reno under the ownership of Bob Button, he does still own her and as of now still plans on setting records with her, but after that who knows. He wants to donate the plane to a museum and I'm guessing she will go to the Planes of Fame air museum in the future. I'll still be uploading videos for as long as I can, I plan on attending the Planes of Fame airshows in the future, so keep an eye out for that. Plus I have tons of old footage from Reno that I'll start uploading at a later date.

That event was his exit from air racing.
Sean Hollingsworth No, unfortunately I wasn't there that year, I wish someone would've gotten it on film, it would be very interesting to see. He was very lucky with the outcome of that failure!!
Is that water coming off the wings to cool the oil cooler and what not?
Yes, you are correct, they have spray bars in each wing spraying across the oil coolers.
I figured as much. The Pikes Peak racers do the same due to the decrease in air density as altitude increases.
Does it have a r4360 in it?

1000hp more than the likes of strega and voodoo but almost 100mph slower?
Keep in mind she weighs a couple tons more and is quite a bit bigger , not to mention the inherent drag affecting a radial-engined aircraft. Nevertheless, if you want to win at Reno, you've got to get around Dreadnought, which ain't no easy task.

Especially for the three other Sea Furies and the Yak 3M that made "Dreadnought" look "fast" while it was getting its ass kicked by a full lap by Strega and Voodoo turning 8 laps in 7:49ish to Dreadnought's 7.
It wasn’t making all the available power in this run, and hasn’t in quite a while. When Dreadnought is flying on the course under full power, you hear a lot more prop noise because along with the boost, they’re turning about 3,000 RPM. Yes, Strega, Voodoo, Czech Mate and even Rare Bear are faster, but they quit trying to make Dread go faster in the 1990s. They just cruise along and more often than not, finish in the top 3.
