- Steve Hinton laying down the 2nd fasted qual speed of the 2017 Reno national championship Air Races, and this just weeks after breaking the world speed record for piston engine aircraft.

I had the honor to fly a short scenic hop out of Santa Maria Airport behind Bill Spears' in the pilot's seat in the early 90's before he raced it at Reno. Pre-body enhancement, plain polished aluminum skin. Just a few aileron rolls, some climbs & wing overs and dives over the Pismo Dunes. I walked 3 ft off the ground for weeks.

It is an awesome demonstration show of the power of the Merlin and the superior pilot skills that tame the wild mustang around the 8 mile plus P-51 pony pasture. I cannot even imagine what incredible feeling of adrenaline flowing thru your entire nervous system while interconnected within your steed (like the Na'vi with their winged creatures in the movie "Avatar").
Great footage (as per usual, I've come to expect nothing less than excellence from your channel). Hell of a lot better than mine! ;)
Thanks again to you and the rest of Team Voodoo for your outstanding coverage of the races and for continuing to come back to Reno and compete year after year. Sad to see her go as she is my favorite racer of all time, but glad I got to witness one of the fastest SuperStangs ever turn the sticks!

bob dyer As of now she's done racing at Reno (with Bob Button at least), the last word was that she'll possibly go for more record runs.
I forgot too ask, what about Jr.? Is he going to wait and see, or is he putting out feelers for another ride? Resurrect DAGO!
bob dyer As far as I know he’s staying with Voodoo while they go for more record stuff, plus if Bob donates the plane, it might likely go to the Planes of Fame museum.

What is the reason Voodoo is being donated to a museum rather than being sold if the owner does not want to keep it? Is it because the owner can get more for the airplane as a donation as compared to a sale?
SanFranciscoBay I believe he wanted to donate the plane due to the historical nature of her now, instead of it being sold and restored back to stock. I'm hoping she ends up with the Planes of Fame air museum, they would take care of her and keep her flying in her current form.
Voodoo1650. What is the estimated value of Voodoo as a race plane and how much would it cost to return it to a stock Mustang?
That's a tough question, especially now that the plane holds the world speed record. I would imagine that the plane is worth well over 1.5 million as she sits, definitely less that say a stock TF-51D that cost upwards of 3 million. If Bob were to sell the plane with all the engines then you're getting up there, plus he has a lot of spare parts that he's stocked up on over the years. It would probably cost well over a million to convert it back to stock since they would have to completely restore it from the ground up due to the multitude of changes to the airframe, ie. wing incidence change, tail offset change, engine angle change, and so on.

I thought you guys had the race won till you caught the lapper and strega pounced on the chance to pass you. Congrats to them on the win. That must have been so annoying to have it pretty much won and bam its taken from you in a second or two
