  • A look at Myth: the fallen lords story and lore with a few comments about the gameplay and design of Myth in the opening. Myth: The Fallen Lords was an RTS game developed by Bungie Studios that released in 1997. The Myth game series is a cult classic. The story Bungie told with Myth is remembered fondly by its community and the Myth story is well regarded by many. Myth: TFL was the last game developed by Jason Jones before Bungie began development on the project that became Halo. With Myth Bungie sought to do a couple things differently.
The intention of this video is to provide an accessible, broad, fast paced, and quick to consume summary of the story of this Bungie classic for audiences not familiar with the game. A quick recap of the games story. But hopefully the experience is enjoyable for long time fans as well. It definitely isn't the deep dive into a specific subject that i've done previously with the Marathon videos. But the UA-camr Jeoku has put out a very deep dive into the Myth series backstory that can compliment this video for newcomers or laypersons interested in learning more.
Should Mandalore Gaming do a review on the Myth franchise next after delving into Marathon a few months ago?

Myth the Fallen Lords Story is well regarded by its fan base, and one of the most iconic elements of the Myth The Fallen Lords Story are its Voice over journals that book end every misson in the game. Myth: The Fallen Lords story also has a sequel, which i'll be making a video on down the road. " Myth the Fallen Lords Story " has many iconic elements which we go over in this video. With Myth Bungie told a story that is remembered fondly by many to this day.
Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 20“Because you have so little faith, He answered. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”… Matthew 17: 19-20

This is without a doubt my favorite game of all time. The Original Sound Track and journal entries were always so dark and desperate, it made every mission feel so critical. I wish they would make a TV series about this.
I remember reading about this game in PC Gamer or Game informer and asking for this for Christmas as a kid. I found the box in my parents closet and could barely sleep for 2 weeks waiting for Xmas morning to come.

x2 but a TV series would be butchered. They'd make the same mistakes the Myth 3 developers made: focus on the leaders/wizards and lose what made Myth magic: perspective! You don't KNOW what the hell is going on. You're just a lowly pleb following orders. That's what they took from the Black Order that was so fantastic.
Just remake the first two and do a kickstarter for a proper sequel (or prequel.) Hire the original writers or someone that "gets" what made the first two so magical.
.... but please please keep the monotone "Casualties".

There are two types of people: people who haven't played any of these two gems....and the lucky ones.
In my opinion, MYTH TFL was - and is, to a certain extent - video game perfection. The whole mood of the game, the music, the whole atmosphere is beyond great. The gameplay itself is absolute sheer perfection. You could never play the exact same way - not in the sense of a FPS, for instance, where you know when and where the enemies will be - since the formations would differ, the projectiles would sometimes miss (damn those dwarven molotovs!) and the enemies would sometimes take a different route, or not show up. You had to understand a bit of basic military formations at first, but after a while you could experiment and invent different formations to face different challenges. ~
Basically, if you read "The Art of War" beforehand, this game will be twice as fun, believe me. ;)
A remake of this game would be the wildest of dreams, since it had to be done so carefully not to spoil the core of it, that the task itself is nearly impossible. Like some people have said, "they don't make games like these anymore", sadly.

    • @thamor4746

Remake of this game could inspire for new wave of Myth stories. In the end just revamping graphics, while keeping the same combat system would even work. I know as a fan you don't want it to be different, but just making a new Myth The Fallen Lords would be just a dream come true.

This video is a very streamlined look into Myth:The Fallen Lords story. I very deliberately wanted the run time to be below fifteen minutes. And its the only video i've done without a sizeable adjunct. The primary audience is probably either fans who want to take an unchallenging trip down memory lane, or a fan of one of bungies other game franchises looking for some quick info and context about the games premise. You said that Connacht freed the Trow from the Tain but this is incorrect. If you look a t the Tales from Myth comic it is clear that the Trow were entombed them within the vaults beneath Rhi'anon. Also I believe you said Mauriac was one of the Nine which the game never tells us. Thanks for helping grow the Myth community.

Nah not a remake - just a polish maybe... maybe
Watching Jeoku playing The Wolf Age made it clear to me how only switching the sprite characters with 3D models just made it look worse.
The first 2 games look and sound better as well as the art, because some of the Myth 3 art can looks comical. Especially The Watcher, where every time he was drawn he's posing as if he wanted us to look at his massive gains lol - but when we finally meet him in game, the 3D model just looks skeletal with no gains.
Completely agree with your later comment - went for a walk while listening to this and I couldn't hear much either.

Because it pains me that this hasn't been mentioned: The biggest inspiration to the story of Myth - The Fallen Lords were the "Black Company" books by Glen Cook, especially the first trilogy "Books of the North" from 1984/85.
I encourage anyone who loved the story of Myth to give those books a try. The parallels will be very striking such as the story being told as a soldier's journal, and the inspiration for the "fallen lords" and the "nine" are very obvious.

Ah, minor nitpick: the Trow weren't imprisoned in the Tain. Connacht melted their cities using the Sun Hammer. Not all of them (immortal and very much trapped alive) were in those cities. They have a great and complex worldview. Great race/characters. Also: Moagaim wasn't the leveller in Myth 3. Majarim (spelling?) was. Balor had more than 4 lieutenants - some of them are even named, but do not appear in game. The Trow (confirmed by devs) are indeed immortal and were created by Nyx. They "remember" their creation and are the oldest living race (left) in the world. Nyx and Wyrd are (were?) very much real. While I didn't hate Myth 3 as much as others (though it was buggy mess on release) you are correct in noting it was from different developers and should absolutely not be considered canon.
They couldn't even get the damn journals right.
Speaking of the journals: The greatest thing about Myth was the fact that you don't know the whole story. Your perspective is limited to that of a common foot soldier in their journal. 10/10 one of the greatest games ever made and, honestly, had a better plot and writing than the source material The Black Company.
If you're curious and want to go down the rabbit hole, read the fan speculation on the connection between Myth (specifically the great devoid) and Marathon beyond just what you've mentioned. People have poured way to much time into that. While it requires some SERIOUS stretching, it's interesting stuff. At the end of the day, I would absolutely kill for a Myth 4 that brought this game back into prominence.

@@frankangelo1983 Your correction about the Trow not being imprisoned in the Tain is correct and appreciated, a couple people pointed that out. I apologize for the mistake. I'm not sure Myth 3 accurately reflections Bungies original intentions. We learn in the original two that Connacht killed Moagim.
"They say Alric talked about The Head often, ridiculing The Nine's belief that it was one of the avatara of Connacht. Connacht was the great hero of the Wind Age, who drove the evil Moagim from the earth, and The Head claims to have been one of Connacht's closest advisors during this time."
Connachts key role in his cycle is defined by him defeating Moagim. No other hero is recorded to have defeated Moagim in a prior age.
We can also look at Myth 2s epilogue:
"Although the hero of every age of light is different, every dark age is ushered in by the same beast - a transient divinity that seeks only conflict - The Leveler. And so Tireces returned as Moagim to end the Age of Reason - and Connacht, the great hero of the Wind Age, returned as Balor to lay waste to the greatest empire the world had ever known.
The Leveler was never killed. He was immobilized by sorcery, beheaded and burned at the stake in the Second Era. A thousand years later he was drawn and quartered on the plains before Ileum, the tireless horses dragging the pieces of his lifeless body to the four corners of the world. Again in the Fourth Era his body was destroyed by fire, his ashes mixed with salt and buried under the Mountains of Kor. Balor, Moagim and all those before them wore the Mantle of The Leveler."
There is never any indication in Myth 1 and Myth 2 that the incarnation of the Leveler killed by Connacht was anyone other than Moagim. Nor is there any indication that there was any hero who defeated Moagim other than Connacht. I think there is a chance that Myth might actually get a sequel or a reboot developed by Bungie. And if that happens there is in my mind a meaningful chance that Myth III won't be considered canon. So including its story elements in a video covering the first game was something I wanted to avoid.

@@Ghostvirus Hey man, thanks for the really fast reply! I appreciate all things Myth! You have absolutely idea to apologize - looks like I had some misconceptions too. I replay the series every 5 years or so and have too much "head canon". I occasionally forget what was mentioned where and appreciate the reminder.
Soooooooooooooo: regarding the head. This is obviously open to conjecture, but one of the things I LIKED about Myth 3 was the surprise reveal that Moagim (the previous incarnation) was not actually Moagim! It's an unanswered mystery as to how Mjarin either rezed him, or created a (very strong) lookalike. Have you seen the deleted dialogue from the final mission? Connacht explicitly says something to the effect of: "I see now that you are the true leveler Mjarin!" No clue why it was cut in the English version. I can provide a youtube link if you'd like. Also check out the (not cut) "bad" ending if you fail the final mission. That wizard prick is defintely the big bad. Moagim was just for show.
Obviously, this is open to interpretation - but does fit with the fact that the Leveler doesn't appear as the same person twice. Ever. He takes over the last age's hero if possible. Who Mjarin really is? I suppose we'll never really know as the series is (for now) dead and the voice acting/cut scenes of Myth 3 were hilariously bad.
You could be absolutely right in your opinion and perspective regarding the leveler being Moagim but I think that cheeky "twist" at the end of Myth 3 deserves to be kept. That's pretty much the ONLY thing in the game that needs to be kept. Hell, we don't even find out what happens to Flyn. Flin? Flynn? Ravana and Damas's kid. However you spell it. Again this is so open to interpretation that it's impossible to be "right" or "wrong." I just picked what thematically fits in my head canon for the Myth world.
You are correct that the leveler (the meteor perhaps?) can't be truly killed. We also don't know a damn thing about him (it?) other than he seemingly takes over the age's previous hero. Hell, maybe he's Wyrd's nightmare? Maybe he's Nyx? So many unanswered questions. For all we know, he took charge of the Trow thousands of years ago and started their war with the magic users culminating in their population being decimated. That's when they turned to slavery (if I remember correctly) and iron to strengthen their remaining numbers. Remember: they can't breed. What Trow are left are ALL that's left.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share your thoughts. I really appreciate it. You deserve far more views. ^^
Bungie sold the IP and the company they sold it too no longer exists. There's been a failed kickstarter (that I donated to) and I hope to GOD they do another. I'd give them as much as I could afford. Myth 1 came out when I was in h/s and was very formative not just to my video game tastes but to my perspective on writing in gaming. It's just such a damn masterpiece. It makes me sad that it's only known by old farts like me who appreciate the classics. It deserves to be held up to the other masterpiece RPG/Stragey games of it's era like Baldurs Gate, Torment, and the Warcraft(s). There's really never been a game made quite like it.

Ah, final notes: you should check out Mazzarine's demise if you haven't already. Probably the best plugin for the game and really effing hard. It takes 7-8 people who know what they're doing to manage things tightly for over an hour to kill that damn Watcher. If you wind up playing it and run into Rabican (a famous Myth power player) please tell him I said hello. :)
If you're starving for more Myth content, check out Giant bomb's articles on it that include additional information about previous incarnations and stuff from the devs. There's even a Myth G.U.R.P.S. that's hardly canon, but full of really interesting stuff. Worth the ten bucks I paid to have it shipped to me.
Cheers m8 and keep up the good work. If you ever decide to make more Myth content hit me up. I'm such a simp for this series it's pathetic.

@@frankangelo1983 The Myth I.P was sold to Take Two the massive publisher, but since Mumbo Jumbos Myth III they haven't done anything with the i.p since. They're also late on renewing the trademark. But Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter were mentioned in Bungie related Title filings with the library congress a couple times since Bungie became independent. The title numbers also line up with the original copy right filings title numbers from the 90
I'm not a legal expert but I think that means they reacquired the license to the I.P from Take Two in secret after they became independent in 2007 or sometime after. .I have no idea why there would be records of Myth copy right titles being mentioned in documents filed by Bungie unless they had acquired the copy rights from Take -two.
Anyway I greatly appreciate your perspective, and your feedback. Have a good one. :)

Hey, what if the Wrk is Wyrd? The Wrk constantly makes things and shapes reality to its whims and makes all kinds of wonderous and fantastical worlds. Subjective dreams influencing the material world as we see Shiver, is something the Wrk are notorious for. Pathways into Darkness has all kinds of fantastical and strange monsters roaming about that would look right at home in something like myth.

    • @Ghostvirus
      @Ghostvirus  3 роки тому +1

Indeed that is real possibility. Entities achieving the ability to transcend the subjective - objective boundary is a theme explored in a few other places of interest. The Precursors in Halo lore are called "dreamers and makers" in Halo: Warfleet. The Pyramid ships in Destiny also come to mind.
The homeworld of the Awoken exists inside of a pocket universe created within a singularity generated during the collapse when th paracausal weapons of the Light and the Darkness collided. When the first Awoken, Mara Sov, entered this pocket dimension it was apparently in an undefined state, and her subconsciousness was able to influence the entire pocket dimension in the initial singularity. But after this initial point of possibility the laws of the new universe were more or less locked.
I didn't do an adjunct on this video - but if I had it was going to be on this subject.
What I would say is, it isn't necessary a Wrk. But it could be an entity from a different franchise - maybe even from Marathon who somehow in someway eventually developed the ability to manipulate reality at minute scales with their mind similar to what the Dreaming God and Wrk were capable of. What the Security Officer does in Marathon Infinity is referred to as "dreaming". The security Officer is christened "destiny" by Durandal, which is a synonym of Wyrd. Wyrds confrontation with Nyx parallels the Kill your Television terminal text. And in some Myth source I vaguely recall reading more than ten years ago seemingly implies that the dark gods were pissed that Wyrd kept influencing the one dream and disrupting their plans, so they imprisoned wyrd in a pocket dimension. That might of been from gurps though, and gurps isn't held in high regard. I couldn't find the reference when I went back. But that could support the theory that Wyrd is the Wrk from Infinity. Or it could suggest that sometime after Marathon Infinity, "the dark gods" imprisoned the Security Officer in a pocket dimension to stop him from kicking so much ass.

Incorrect, the Trow were not imprisoned in The Tain, they had their power broken by the acts of Connacht and The Oghres. The Sunhammer spelled the final end of the Trow's formerly Ironclad grip on other races. THE MYRKRRYDIA were the ones sentenced to the Tain and from the looks of it, killed each other for food before they all were gone...

You're correct that the Trow weren't imprisoned in the tain. A couple people pointed that out, i'm sorry for the mistake.
But this is not really intended to be a Myth III video. Myth III wasn't developed by Bungie or with Bungies input. So this video essentially acts like it doesn't exist. Not sure if i'll cover Myth III. As i'm not sure if it will be treated canon by Bungie if a sequel / prequel / spiritual sequel that is connected canonically gets made.
The first two Myth games claim that Moagim was the leveler that Connacht killed for example.

Its pretty obvious that he's hinting the sleeping god responsible for the magic was a W'rkncacntr.
Now for my opinion: the great devoid is a pit closer down to him. The closer you get, the stronger his influence gets, so throwing the head down there made it explode since the head was already so strongly attuned to the dream to begin with, it effectively overloaded.
Check Destiny and Destiny 2 thoroughly for hints though, Bungo likes to do that.
