  • A look at Bungie's Myth II: Soulblighters story and lore with a few comments about the gameplay and design of Myth in the opening. Myth 2: Soulblighter was an RTS game developed by Bungie Studios that released in 1998. It is the sequel to Myth: The Fallen Lords. The Myth game series is a cult classic. The story Bungie told with Myth is remembered fondly by its community and the Myth story is well regarded by many. With Myth Bungie sought to do a couple things differently.
    Myth 2: Soulblighter was in development while some at Bungie began the initial incubation work that lead to the development of Halo CE. The game continued Bungies early legacy of being a central figure in mac gaming. Although it wasn't a mac exclusive as a PC version did release.

    Finally got around to watching this. Thanks for making it as it is a much easier for people who don't want the 30 hour version haha. Just as good as the TFL video you made.
    One thing that didn't make sense to me... It is not foretold that the Deceiver's and Shiver's powers will be weakened with the defeat of Balor? Where is this coming from? He just loses his control over them because they are bound to him. Shiver continues to serve Balor for obvious reasons. And how she came back for those who are curious...
    “...her spirit disconnected from her body, set adrift on the ether... gathered up by Soulblighter and... made corporeal with the terrible power of Tramist’s Mirror.” - Myth 2 Shiver Journal
    P.S. Nice sharing a verse in the video description. I might have to start doing that too :)

    • @Ghostvirus
      @Ghostvirus  2 роки тому +2

      It comes from the journal entry for "the road north" mission in Myth: The Fallen Lords.
      "Alric was interrogated by Balor during his captivity, and he learned by chance that Balor had bound each of The Fallen to himself, to ensure their obedience to his will. The Fallen draw their power through these links, and were Balor to be killed they would all be powerless. The armies of the Dark would collapse."
      I presume that what is meant by "The Fallen" [uppercase] are The Fallen Lords including Soulblighter, the Deceiver and Shiver.
      And the journal suggests that The Fallen draw their power from these links to Balor, and without him they would all become powerless.
      This leads to a few possibilities:
      - Balor was lying to those around him including to The Fallen about the Fallens dependence on him. To prevent the Fallen Lords from betraying him. Shiver may not have betrayed him, but he may have been worried that one of the others might become tempted in the middle of the war.
      - Balor still lives in some form and they continue to draw power from their links to him.
      - The Fallen Lords found another source to draw their power from.
      - my interpretation of the above journal is incorrect.

    • @Jeoku
      @Jeoku 2 роки тому +1

      @@Ghostvirus Could be it is talking about their power to control their undead army. In the Myth 2 manual it talks about Soulblighter learning Balor's greatest secret, reanimated of the dead. This suggests that Balor did not teach his Fallen Lord's this power. Although obviously the Watcher would have known. This would ultimately render them powerless aka no army. At least this solution makes the most sense to me.

      @@Ghostvirus off the top of my head, ‘tarrow’ should be ‘tallow’, ‘maulers’ should be ‘mauls’, there’s no town called ‘gonen’ (only a bridge - the legion weren’t heading to the town of gonen, they were making a mad dash to get across the cloudspine), and at least at the start of the game the legion shouldn’t really be called ‘the army of the light’, because there hasn’t been a ‘dark’ for 60 years - they’re just called ‘the legion’, being the army of the lands under Alric’s rule.
      Also ‘muirthemne’ is pronounced ‘murr-them-nee’, not ‘mur-threm-ne’.
      As for chronology, the main one that stuck out was when you said Alric was searching for the Ibis crown ‘meanwhile’ when the trow and dwarven mortars took Muirthemne - the ibis crown mission took place after the city was captured. The mission ‘redemption’ (defending the city) took place at about the same time as ‘relic’, when the legion went off with the deceiver to find the Tain. Also Crüniac was killed between ‘the baron’ and ‘gonen’s bridge’, not after gonen’s bridge. The storytelling in Myth is slightly non-linear, because the journal writer didn’t know crüniac had died before he wrote the journal entry for gonen’s bridge. So when he says ‘Crüniac is dead’ at the start of the next level, it explains who the dead warrior is at the start of Gonen’s Bridge.
      I think the other detail you glossed over a bit was the fact that the reason the legion was setting ambush points in ‘the stair of grief’ was to buy time for the deceiver’s sceptre to be dug up from the glacier (which had melted during the first game, when the deceiver was defeated and washed downstream). The sceptre is then used to revive the deceiver’s body.
      All in all pretty minor quibbles which is why I didn’t want to list them in the first place!

    • @Ghostvirus
      @Ghostvirus  3 роки тому +1

      @@bahlalthewatcher4790 Its no problem. I originally had the Sceptre context but it was one of the sections removed during final scoping.

      "So when he says ‘Crüniac is dead’ at the start of the next level, it explains who the dead warrior is at the start of Gonen’s Bridge. "
      No, that is just the corpse of a random warrior that the party met during the travel to Gonen's bridge, other wise we would find the remnants of the battle where Soulblighter killed Cruniac with many other dead bodies. The bridge was close, so if that was Cruniac, it would mean that Soulblighter reached it way before we could blow it up.
      "the deceiver’s sceptre to be dug up from the glacier (which had melted during the first game, when the deceiver was defeated and washed downstream)"
      The glacier that melt was that of Seven Gates, when the volcano Tharsis erupted. Stair of Grief was much more to the north, and by the end of TFL it is told in the journal that the Deceiver passed through it. Perhaps after Balor's death and the collapse of the undead armies, the Deceiver fled alone through the same pass since it was closer, only to become frozen during a blizzard and without much more power to overcome this obstacle (nor an army of undead at his command to provide support and assistance).

      @@meirengrisailes8103 good point about the deceiver and seven gates.
      I don’t think I buy that the warrior at the start of gonen’s bridge is some random. I know what you mean but I think it’s just a mistake in the environmental storytelling not to have more dead warriors. That said, isn’t he described as running like hell with half the colour guard, away from the battle? It could be that Crüniac died after running and holding his guts in with his shield but the remaining colour guardsmen survived and were part of the group that you control in Gonen’s Bridge.

    Perhaps the greatest PC game of the modern era(32 bit and beyond). I was not familiar with the Myth series at all or really Bungie. Right around 2001, my older brother suggested I give this game Myth a try. He actually bought me Myth II for Christmas because he had moved on to it from TFL. I was just hitting 30 years old and hadn't really gamed all that much in a while, but my first child was on their way so I was looking for some stay at home activities besides TV. I was immediately hooked and was pretty sad that I had actually missed out on all the TFL years and indeed it was only like a year or something before the Bungie servers were taken down because MS wanted them to be all things HALO. There is a ton of lore and a ton written and documented about the start of Bugie, just like the start of ID software....giants in the late 90's scene of creating the PC gaming market. But in my humble opinion, these all focus too much on HALO and Bugies creation of HALO. To me...the REAL golden days and highest achievement of Bungie was the Myth years. When I heard that the Bungie guys had left MS and were starting Bungie games again, I have always secretly hoped they'd start a new Myth series, but no luck. I think that whole deal with Take 2/Myth III etc means they don't have IP for it any longer. Probably more money to be made in FPS like Destiny, etc any way. But one can always hope.
