What the hell!!! I clicked on this site to see a rift... and before I knew it, got back slapped with a lesson. And a lesson that communicated perfectly. A great out of the box lesson...I'm going to check one of you others...Great job!!
Any video on ACDC has an approval from me! Definitely a worthwhile and insane riff that'll make anyone want to pick up the guitar. Cheers on the work as always
I think that the true magic of AC/DC is not only just their incredible riffs but the way they PUNCH you in the nose in every song with their use of chords, usually G, C and A. One of my all time favorite parts of any rock song is that G chord in You shook me all night long. As Brian sings " and You", the single G is struck and then the pause between "You...shook" when they strum down the rest of that G, man that is just the best! It's very simple yet SO effective!! Look at this riff, all those fast notes then suddenly Pow! Pow! Pow! they hit you with those held D, G and A chords, then fly back into the boogie part. So many of their songs use this technique and it works every single time!! Great Video Thom!
@Ron Just Ron 3-08-2020 The chords that we typically hear in many AC/DC songs have been around for ages. The catch is as you noted, the simplicity combined with Angus' special touch and technique, along with the emphasis and energy that only he can do, make it a whole package. There's a saying that goes something to the effect of: it's not what you have, it's how you use what you have.
You play that very well now I want you to play it running all over the stage, falling down and spinning in circles without missing a note the way Angus does. Absolutely one of the most amazing performers I have ever seen.
I don’t know how he does it. Angus is a machine! I think the same thing of John Frusciante. He plays the snow song well he’s dancing around. I can’t even play it sitting down. It’s a rough one. Talented!
Imo malcom was the heart of every acdc song. The gretsch with those heavy strings was the sound. Took me a few years to realize that malcolm's rhythm was what made me love acdc. Maybe that's why "gimme a bullet" is my favorite acdc song?
Makes me wish I'd listened to my long-suffering guitar teacher 50 years ago, I might be a retired rock God now....or perhaps not! Great teaching skills!
Angus was lucky that he had a hugely supportive mother, but he also had the inspiration of an older brother who was already famous as a member of The Easybeats. The high energy portion of ACDC comes from the frenetic style of the Easybeats. Angus would come home from Ashfield High School and start practicing constantly. Years of work went into his style, but growing up in a household of musicians must have helped. I was a young man in Sydney when the Easybeats were big and AC/DC was just starting. Great times. Here is a clip I love of The Easybeats in 1965 before they made it big. This was in a studio that used to exist near where I live. I saw so much great music there. ua-cam.com/video/osGm7fIKFZE/v-deo.html Angus would have been 10 years old at that time. It gives context to the world Angus was growing up in. Within a couple of years of this clip Angus would be listening to them on the radio, and reading of their performances in Europe, and hearing stories of their wild life on tour. Incredible and talented family. Here is a guitarist talking about Easybeats riffs by George Young ua-cam.com/video/CTd50EGC1kE/v-deo.html Interesting to contrast with the younger Young brothers.
You were fortunate to be there at that time. Love the Easybeats. Friday is still a staple on classic rock stations in America. But Sorry is also a great song that doesn't get played enough. Wasn't George their manager after AC DC got started? Probably a key piece of their success having a trustworthy manager that also knows the ropes. Cheers.
You break things down in a fun and interesting way. Thanks for your posts. I, and I believe many others , find your posts quite relative the way you point to many of our favorite rockers! Thanks again for making the rock riffs fun to play and help us to relate! Take care and have a great weekend, RHJ
In an interview from about 10 years ago angus was asked how its like to be one of the best guitarists in the world angus laughed and simply said im not even the best in our band
Jugizet Mal makes it look easy, I mean it’s just simple chords, but just when you think you got it you have to start all over, he’s hard to duplicate. Personally I think it’s easier to pickup Angus’s licks than Mal’s rythym guitar
When the boogie man is driving to work in the morning he reverses out of his driveway super slow in case Angus duckwalks past shredding the thunderstruck intro

Nice musical historical note on the difference between the blues shuffle and the straight four. This was the birth of rock and roll and Chuck Berry was the pioneer. In his Johnny B Goode you can here the tension between the hired 50s studio band trying to play shuffle like they were used to, and Chuck Berry playing straight four over top, which arguably is what makes the song and throws off a lot of players trying to capture the groove. Thanks for making me remember that I used to love playing this song. Powerage is the more underrated ACDC álbum, with some incredible and powerfull riffs. Keep rocking Pilgrim!!! ;)

Awesome insight! Thanks for sharing. I first saw AC/DC in concert in the 70s. High Voltage took the world by storm! Angus being carried around on someone’s shoulders was truly mesmerizing. After Sammy Hagar, Mother’s Finest and AC/DC my ears had a high pitched whistle for about 3 days! You had me up and playing this riff quickly!

Unless there's a song-by-song breakdown of who came up with the riffs, I don't suppose we'll ever know. But Malcolm Young is generally considered the riff-master of most of AC/DC's catalog. Still, I have no doubts Angus was no slouch in the riff department as well. Be interesting to know who came up with what. And wasn't it Malcolm and Bon or Malcolm and Brian who worked up most of their song's lyrics? Well, what ever the case, great band that's made some of Rock music's all-time great tunes.
@@GuitarPilgrim, that's the thing. Unless Angus, since Malcolm's gone, were to go song by song and say who came up with what, why, I don't think we'll ever know. Bottom line, of course, is the band as a whole recorded some great music.
I'm not a guitarist, but I am a lifelong AC/DC fan. Have seen heaps of riff breakdown or analysis videos on Angus, but never enjoyed as much I did this one. Great work mate, keep it up.
LOVE your vids, so interesting.. but I must clarify.. that even the recording has a lot going on.. Angus does in fact lead the riff after the 3 - A chords with the first single note "A" actually being played with an upstroke on the 2nd fret G- string. Many assumed that Angus starts this riff with the open "a" ... the mix is difficult to pick up but a clean video of Angus playing this song with Guns and Roses outside in the sunshine shows it clearly. I might assume Malcolm would change it from Angus and play the open A string to start as their parts were often subtly different. Just some interesting details.. Once again.. LOVE your vids.. loads of fun..

Yesss! In these days I just wanted to ask you to say something about Angus Young. I think he's a great blues guitarist. Thank you! But, please, a more in depth video about AC/DC in the future!
I can pick up pretty much anything by ear in a few minutes, so I really like how it didn't take you 20 or 30 minutes of annoying yammering to teach the riff (and also liked adding a few performance clips to help illustrate). Great job!
Boy, I will ya, it took me quite awhile to play that lick sitting down,, and to get to the point where you can play it running down the street is a completely different bird !!! Its truly amazing how he does it with seemingly ease ! TY Pilgrim ! 😎 ✌️
@@keithhernandez4083 The riffs are similar, both based on the boogie riff demonstrated at the beginning of this video, so you could say it's another one Page "ripped off" from old blues songs, but in my opinion the whole "rip off" narrative is BS. Rock and Roll evolves through imitation. One artist inspires another, then that artist inspires more...
@@keithhernandez4083 Stairway? What about it? It was one of Zeppelin's more original compositions, with very little "borrowed' from anywhere, but it had lots of inspiration from other bands like The Beatles, as well as composers of the classical symphonic era.
Dude you are producing videos about my favorite artists, like I can't believe how lucky I am. Thank you so much, please keep them coming! ZZ Top or another John Mayer maybe? :)
That just sounds way off on a strat. It really misses that straight punch in the face a decent humbucker delivers. Also, the G chord has no minor or major third in it making it more suitable for distorted open chords and to Angus his solo's which brilliantly move from major to minor to dorian or mixolydian. In fact most chords they play miss that third it's just more obvious on the G because it mutes the A string.
Honey , you wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it for yourself! I have 4 times.Much to the chagrin of my eardrums! Great concert.Every time! Roll on, roll on.
Angus thought me how to play. I was 13 at a concert. Long story short i will like to enjoy playing again. By the way the angus brother wes very cool to me. I miss him 😭. They thought me some riffs..

Yeah you right.Malcolm played that Gretsch thru 100 watt Marshall turned all the way up..then turned down on the guitar..power tube grind and chime of cowboy chords= best rhythm guitar sound in rock history.Sorry I'm geekin hard.RIP Malcolm.

They done got blowed off by the previous ACDC video you watched! Good man. You'll do well to carry extras with you.
Terrific approach to teaching this tune!
Yesss! In these days I just wanted to ask you to say something about Angus Young. I think he's a great blues guitarist. Thank you! But, please, a more in depth video about AC/DC in the future!
Great riff!! Listen to Cliff William’s bass line as well. Deceptively simple but SOLID!!
Dude, still waiting your video why Angus kicks ass. Cheers from Argentina!
think of this video as a sort of a preview of things to come! Greetings from Ireland!
Don't forget Mr. Malcolm Mitchell Young, who was also in the same band.
I can pick up pretty much anything by ear in a few minutes, so I really like how it didn't take you 20 or 30 minutes of annoying yammering to teach the riff (and also liked adding a few performance clips to help illustrate). Great job!
Really enjoying your videos as for a beginner like me I find them easy to understand when you break them down can’t wait to pick up the SG.
Angus is totally amazing, check out ride on? What a guitar god.
Yes thats a great track ride on a blues in C.
@@paulcooper5748 sure is a blues in c but Angus's pentatonic soloing prowess is awe inspiring. Keep on rocking.
Boy, I will ya, it took me quite awhile to play that lick sitting down,, and to get to the point where you can play it running down the street is a completely different bird !!! Its truly amazing how he does it with seemingly ease ! TY Pilgrim ! 😎 ✌️
People: you can't rock like AC/DC without a Gibson.
Pilgrim guitar: hold my Stratocaster.
Angus still has a bit of shuffle against straight drum. Chuck straighted against swing or shuffle drums, specifically the ride cymbal.
Can you please do a “Why Ronnie Wood kicks ass” video? I really want someone to show woody some love.
"Don't ever call me "Woody"" - Ron Wood - READ A BOOK!
Chuck Father of Rock but he doesn’t kick ass, that’s the thing!!
@@gregguerra8509 lol are you serious or just ignorant? ua-cam.com/video/QnhMCtktWLs/v-deo.html
Why dont you do it since you have a thing for Mr.Wood. hehe
People argue about Bon Brian and Axl but Angus is the show. Favorite band since the first time I heard them in 1977. 🎸❤
Sounds a lot like Zep's Rock and Roll
They're both in the key of A major 4/4 time signature....
Yep, and this time they did it first
@@keithhernandez4083 The riffs are similar, both based on the boogie riff demonstrated at the beginning of this video, so you could say it's another one Page "ripped off" from old blues songs, but in my opinion the whole "rip off" narrative is BS. Rock and Roll evolves through imitation. One artist inspires another, then that artist inspires more...
@@livewire2759 Stairway?
@@keithhernandez4083 Stairway? What about it? It was one of Zeppelin's more original compositions, with very little "borrowed' from anywhere, but it had lots of inspiration from other bands like The Beatles, as well as composers of the classical symphonic era.
Great lesson! LOVE ANGUS AND MALCOLM!!!!
Dude you are producing videos about my favorite artists, like I can't believe how lucky I am. Thank you so much, please keep them coming! ZZ Top or another John Mayer maybe? :)
Thanks brother, plenty more coming, stay tuned!
Ooo JM is gotta be next
Agreeeed! Thank you so much.
I learn a lot just watching you riff. Thanks.
what ac/dc song is that?
That just sounds way off on a strat. It really misses that straight punch in the face a decent humbucker delivers. Also, the G chord has no minor or major third in it making it more suitable for distorted open chords and to Angus his solo's which brilliantly move from major to minor to dorian or mixolydian. In fact most chords they play miss that third it's just more obvious on the G because it mutes the A string.
Angas....one of a kind, from a fellow Aussie...go man !!!!!!!!
Looks like he has as much fun as Flea. Just need Animal on drums ;-)
Grohl
Honey , you wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it for yourself! I have 4 times.Much to the chagrin of my eardrums! Great concert.Every time! Roll on, roll on.
Angus thought me how to play. I was 13 at a concert. Long story short i will like to enjoy playing again. By the way the angus brother wes very cool to me. I miss him 😭. They thought me some riffs..
He basically described the difference between blues and rock and roll and why chuck is considered a R&R pioneer
You are so freakin 👍 good
OMG great video. ANG is the gentle giant. Nobody over and nobody beside him. Simply the GREATEST OF ALL TIME. THANKS ANG . AC/DC DIE HARD from Norway 👊👊👊👊👊
The thing that always amazed me about how hard and heavy AC/DC sounds is that they are mostly using open chords.
