- Downton Abbey is a period TV drama, set in England in the early 20th century. Though much of the series was shot at Highclere Castle, the village of Bampton in West Oxfordshire was used as Downton in the TV series and briefly in the subsequent film.
In this comprehensive documentary written and presented by Robin Shuckburgh, featuring Hugh Bonneville, we show you around the village of Bampton, taking a closer look at each and every one of the buildings used in the TV show.

Have you ever had the chance to visit Bampton? What did you think? And have you seen the movie? Let us know!
I'm one of the lucky ones - I live there!
I'm interested to understand where the Dowager's house is located.
@@MissLizzy882 Hello, Miss Lizzy.What ' s the weather like there today?Greetings from Moscow Russia.🇷🇺
@@TheBTG88 The film location for the Dower House is a private residence, Byfleet Manor near Byfleet, Surrey, it's not in Bampton. Crawley House, home of Isobel and Matthew is immediately next to the church in Bampton.😊
@@natalya6091 Mostly pouring with rain! 😂
I love British architecture. The beautiful buildings are just amazing. In America we can say this beautiful building is 100 years old. In England you can say this church was built 700 years before America was born. I love the history and the respect you have for the buildings. In America if a building gets to old, we tear it down and build a new. In England you painstakingly fix the old with great detail, with love and respect.
Sadly, we too have torn down a huge amount of beautiful buildings throughout the land. A lot of our cities are very ugly as a result, but you can always see the best of Britain in our villages and small market towns.
I ❤ only God and my family.
The buildings are fascinating to me. We don’t have these in America. I find myself stopping the show and rewinding just to view the buildings. Thank you for this.
My daughter was part of the crew on the series (3 to the last one), a Cotswold girl herself. She has great memories of being on Downton. She's now working in NZ on Netflix, but her heart will always be with Downton.
2021 still watching RE-runs here in Canada. The best tv series ever produced👏👏👏🤩🇨🇦👍
Same...in Chile xD
I don’t know how I can re watch the show every month maybe not from the first episode but it’s amazing. I just start from season 2 or 3 because of Mary and Matthew XD
I loved the series love Hugh Bonneville 🙏🙏🙏❤️

I was fortunate to visit Bampton and also Highclere Castle in 2017. As a Downton Fan , I was thrilled. Unfortunately , it was a rainy day but still worth it.
I visited Bampton last year. The citizens there were so helpful and friendly! When I visited the church, it was right after a service, and the congregation was having coffee. I mentioned to one of them how excited I was to be at the spot where Lady Edith was jilted at the altar. She looked and me and said, "You know, it's not real." lol!! Such fun being there! And I have seen the movie 3 times!
@Jim La Grone How did you visit last week in 2020 during shutdown of UK? Do you live near BAMPTON? Sounds like a year ago you had not even heard of covid.
@@christinepizzi6197 thanks for noticing my error! It should have said last year, as I visited there in 2019! I corrected the post.
@@jimlagrone9982 Thank you for responding. On my basket list of places to see when I can finally take my life's dream trip.
This documentary was wonderful! An American here and I love everything about Downton Abbey. So wish I could come to the UK and see it all in person. Thank you ever so much.
Golly! I just finished watching all of the six series and the movie. It brings me to this video. I am from Malaysia and I have never been to this place BUT I'd like to be there in the future. I must say that Downton Abbey is phenomenal!
My wife and I live in Witney which is a couple of miles down the road from Bampton. We have been to the The Romany Inn in Bampton many times for their lovely Sunday lunch, and very reasonably priced it is too. The Landlord and Landlady are lovely, friendly people. If you are ever in Bampton on a Sunday, treat yourselves and have a very tasty Sunday lunch at The Romany Inn!! And of course, have a wonder round this lovely village.
Hello. I have just googled about Bampton. It is sometimes called Bampton-in-the-Bush. It's about 4 1/2 miles Southwest of Witney in Oxfordshire. And it is in UK Parliament Constituency of Witney?
@@zulkiflijamil4033 They are one and the same! Not sure why it's sometimes called 'In-the-Bush. However, The Bampton area has been settled since the Iron Age and Roman periods.
The Exeter Book of AD 1070 records the toponym as Bemtun. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Bentone. A charter or roll from 1212 records it as Bamtun. It is derived from the Old English bēam-tūn, which could mean either "tūn by the beam" or "tūn made from beams". Tūn is an Old English word that originally meant a fence, and came to mean an enclosure or homestead.
(The above was taken from Wikipedia. just thought this was interesting!)
@@nigeltimms1374 Thanks a lot for the explanations. Very much appreciate it. 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for this. Bampton looks like a charming village. Crawley house by Church's gate is much larger than it appeared on the series. I'd love to see a complete tour of all the sites shown in the series such as the Dowager house, the estate they thought they'd move to after Robert lost the money , the London house the family owned, the Scottish castle where Rose's family lived, Rosamond's Belgravia house.....all of them.
What a wonderful little film. Marvellously presented by Robin Shuckburgh & full of fantastic anecdotes you wouldn't hear about anywhere else. I cannot believe 29 people have disliked this.......there really is no pleasing some people.
Wonderful exploration of such a beautiful place. I am so pleased that the village is enjoying the profits from the production of the series and film, yet remains intrinsically itself.
It is indeed a wonderful place! The visitors we see help us to not take it all for granted :-)
I truly hope Bampton can find a workable solution to the increase of visitors, something that meets the needs of the community as well as those who come to visit. Those 40-seat busses can be annoying and are hard to maneuver through village streets. When I was in the Cotswolds in April, we had a 16-seat mini coach, with only 8 people, which allowed us pass through closer quarters, to get where the big busses could not go. My hope is that the visitors who come will be respectful of private property and not make too much a nuisance of themselves. I hope to get there someday!
Nice to see and hear about a TV Serial in Beautiful picturesque Bampton 👍
Yesterday, i finished watching the whole parts of Diwnton Abby. It is marvilous series. I really thank the smart, amazing and genious cast for performing this live history.
I loved every bit of this show. I hope that one day I can visit these places and see everything. So beautiful 😍
The hosts narration skills are impressive, calm soothing voice. Should be narrating movies.
Visited Bampton 6 years ago. A lovely village, and LOVE Downton Abbey.
What a lovely village. Truly enjoyed this. Thank you so much
I have seen the movie, and loved everything about it. Watched the entire seasons of the TV programs, -so well done.
A tour of Bampton has been on my bucket list since I first saw season one of DA. 🤞
This was a wonderful look back in time to my most favorite series of all time. I watched eagerly every week and did so again when they had the re run. I am amazed at the things that had to be changed in Bampton to accommodate the time frame. I is kind of those people living there to tolerate all that was going on. Thank you so much for this visit with Hugh Bonneville and the town where much of this filming was done.
Went there on a tour in 2017 I am a big fan and the village was just like in the series amazing
If I hv ever had a vision of the quintissential English village
this is it. But I can't help thinking how cold it must hv been in Winter with all that stonework.
But still, lovely on a sunny day!
undoubtedly there is your work in this matter Hugh as well..!! God bless you..!!
In love with the series. Watching it second time now. Amazing historical research intertwined with intimate story of classes is mind blowing. It takes me back to history as I am living it!! Nostalgic! This documentary quenches thirst of knowing what was happening in background to make this show so legendary! Thank you
This was lovely. Thank you very much.
Pleased you enjoyed it, Thanks.
Great documentary. I liked watching Downton Abbey when it was on tv.
Thank you, again, it was lovely.
I was born in Bampton. I worked on Churchgate house in 1983. Renovation and remodernisation. Wow another life. Ha I remeber the may day fair. The great nightshirt race which was a bed with wheel that was self propelled.
Great series....great cast....very interesting stories.
Very nice intimate stroll around the Downton Abbey village sets of Bampton. I can see what problems parking visiting coaches would be in the narrow village streets - perhaps a Park & Ride scheme needs to be set up - a great solution in other congested towns & cities of the UK.
Another brilliant presentation Robin. Enjoyed it very much.
Many thanks!
Yes.
YES !! YES !!! MORE MORE PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEW SERIES I HOPE 1940'S TO 1950'S ?????????? PERHAPS'S ??? LOVED THE TOIUR OF BAMPTON VILLAGE --- CERTAINLY PUT THE VILLAGE ON THE MAP !!!!!!!!!!! FROM U.K.
Thank you for an informative and warm video Robin, Ross and Widget. Looking forward to continuing my watching of your videos :)
Visited a few years ago. It’s a surprisingly small area, a strip of buildings, a gift shop in one of them, the church is very dark inside, the cemetery is interesting. All fascinating.
So glad I discovered you.
Thank you for sharing this information with us.
Fantastic Video!! Thank you!
I visited Bampton 3 times. The first time with a friend. A few years later with my wife and daughter. Both times we stayed in the Romany Inn. A great place to sleep and have excellent breakfasts and dinners. The third time was 7 years ago, visiting the familiar Downton sites. Regrettably the Romany Inn was not the same anymore. No guests, no service, bad food.
Any Hugh Bonneville fans who enjoy his work he is great in the HBO Winston Churchill movie called The Gathering Storm.
My favourite film!
I loved the village 😊
I ❤ only God and my family.
That must have been wonderful and so much fun. I really love your channel. The Halloween Special I watched last night brought me to this video. I didn't realize the swimming pool in the backyard was a thing there. Yes I'm ignorant. Where we live in the southern states if you have kids you at least have a above ground pool from Walmart. It's just to hot here.
I lived there (Mercury Close - RAF quarters) and went to the local village school!
We live in Witney and regularly walk our dogs in Bampton. Park by the church, walk alongside the library, across the field, follow the path to the main road, cross to Mill Green, follow along and end up at the side of the Butcher' shop.
I absolutely love the Crawley family and not very happy they killed off Matthew. I've watched the whole series 3 times now twice to size up those stunning buildings. Thankyou UK you are a winner💞
Love it!
👍 it!
Beautiful side of UK. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful city and beautiful...missing this city.
Funny to think there once was a time when the closing down of businesses was to be avoided at all costs.
Brampton is also featured in the books by Mel Starr which are very good.
The first Downton film? Please say there’ll be another one 😱
That has been confirmed. As has the delightful news that Maggie Smith will be in it.
In the movie, she said she was ill so I wasn't expecting her to be in another.
They are filming right now, as a matter of fact. Set to release to theaters on Dec. 22nd of this year.
臺灣Taiwan❣️I’m so surprised you mentioned the country I’m from 💘 I just started watching this on Netflix every day now 2021/9, into S5,E2! love Mary’s new hairstyle 😍 love d cook lady ❣️ and more 🥰 I learnt we all should “appreciate” what we have n feel thankful to others’ good intentions.

Would love To go see the village
Bampton is also the setting of the mediaeval crime series The Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton written by Mel Starr.
I'm watching "The Royal Butler" on UA-cam which is where I learned the ways of the Royals and the the upper class way of living like the Crawleys. Priceless info as now I understand why and how they think and act as they do.
Beautiful
Bring back the Crowley family! Plz 😊
Im a fan from The Philippines..
An interesting video. I fervently hope that Bampton will avoid the curse of our times ( pre-Covid 19 ), massive and intrusive tourist numbers, with all the additional infrastructure they require, the displacement of local business and homes - it`s called Venice Syndrome for a reason !
Pity about the add breaks too :(
very good video. if there is a souvenir shop you should move it away slightly from the centre 30000 visiters per year. the producers should give you the rights royalties on any shop merchandise . its a lasting way to remember.
Not sure Bampton in the bush was a serious name. We were always let to believe it was the bamptoniun mocking Comwell when he matched an army to attack royalist from Oxford and he found it hard to find. It was Cromwell who 1st mentioned Bampton in the bush. It's never appeared before that. It's original name was believed to be beam as in a dead tree and ton which derives from the Anglo Saxon tun or toon. Beamtun. now Bampton
From state side, I've got to say that burgers and wine sounds like an odd combination. :D
Would love to have one of those pub signs.
I would LOVE to live in a place like that!
They have good cemeteries to you too.
I ❤ only God and my family.
@@joaoalbertodosanjosgomes1536 There is so much more out there to love.
@@lunalouhoo Yes.
I love Castle Bampton, i just hope they don't over develope and ruin it, like everywhere else in the UK.
Wow, Hugh Bonneville doesn't sound anything like his character!
Yes, this British actor uses a different British accent when in character. Remarkable, the skill of these actors. See if you can find the mini-series "Godless" and you can hear Michelle Dockery playing an American woman in late 1800's New Mexico.
@@bobareebop Okay. Not sure why you felt the need to be snarky. Good day.
@@robthetraveler1099 no snark intended. I apologize if it came across that way. I marvel at the skills of these actors, especially Bonneville who uses a different accent or inflection even though he’s playing a British character.
@@bobareebop Apology accepted! My bad for reading snark where none was intended. It's so easy to misread text.
Es hermoso, lugar, Colonia Uruguay.
My condolences.
Well during this eternal lock down you don't have to worry about crowds sadly
Wouldn't l love to be there, my go to place in my dreams..sigh.
Now then, look ‘ere. The real Bampton be in Devon see!
I would love to go to the village and Highclere Castle dressed as Lady Mary or the Dowager Countess.
why Downtown Abbey is not in UA-cam channel

The heart of men there is riches/poor. Whom do you serve? In the veil of truth power has been unleash to mankind to be free from bondage and receive riches power and protection to add values in the society. The spirit lives in you discover it hear from the supernatural and open your soul to the veil. Illumiinati.
The only thing is it looks nothing like a village in the Vale of York which is what Downton is supposed to be for one thing the roof tiles should be red
Although not featured here there is a pipe that appears on the Dowager Countess’s house and I can’t figure out what it is. I know it’s not important but someone must know what it is. It’s on the outside and I think it’s red and white ⚡️
I enjoyed the show and this clip as well. But can't help but notice how visitors to the village from Africa......obviously very few, were not acknowledged. Literally jumped from South America to Australia. Could be trivial but interesting.
Do you think Bampton village has upstaged Stratford upon Avon???
Even though the series is amazing, i watched Season 4 episode 3 today. That has kind of convinced me not to continue with the show anymore. 😶😶
I guess when people see a show on PBS they think it is a documentary

How much do folk like the idea of ordinary people having to abase themselves to be ‘in service’?
In truth, service still exists today although it’s nature has changed: the UK is a service-based economy but few if any would now see themselves as ‘servants’.
The biggest problem with the great stately homes is that no-one willingly seeks to serve in them in the old sense anymore. The wages would be too low, and the conditions and quality of life too restricted. Quite rightly, no-one will accept those terms and conditions of employment nowadays.
To replace all the staff it takes to run an establishment the size of Highclere Castle / Downton Abbey with professionally-trained and properly-paid staff would simply be horrendously expensive. The wage bill alone would be in the region of US$ 6 million a year.
Plus, all staff would be entitled to some 4 weeks paid vacation annually, 12 bank holidays a year, 8 hour shifts and a 40 hour work week. As a society, people in the UK have campaigned and fought for hundreds of years to establish the employment rights that we all enjoy today - no one is going to give all that up in order to live some anachronistic unworkable fantasy.
I love Downton Abbey, but strictly as. a TV series only. And as much as I love it, I wouldn’t ever want to live that sort of ‘downstairs’ life myself, even today.😀
Please get it right: it's Downton not Downtown!
The narrator: we're going to show you around the church where Matthew Crawley and Mary were married and Edith was dumpet at the altar
The subtitle: we're going to show you around the church where Matthew Crawley and Mary were married and JESUS was dumpet at the altar
Boring!!
