  • Is leather suitable for the fast fashion business model? This is a question that sparks debates and raises concerns in the fashion industry.
    Today, I'll delve into the intricate world of fast fashion by analyzing a popular brand that proudly boasts the use of "environmentally friendly" leather. I'll embark on a journey to distinguish between authentic and PU leather, shedding light on why fast fashion juggernauts endeavor to align the noble image of leather with their inherently unsustainable business practices.
    Join me as I uncover the layers of truth surrounding this brand, exploring the nuanced complexities of the fashion landscape. I will share my insights on why authentic leather serves as the antidote to the fast fashion epidemic, offering a glimpse into the sustainable practices that can revolutionize the industry. Together, let's ignite awareness, provoke thoughtful discussions, and empower ourselves to make careful choices in the realm of fashion.

    Excellent video raising some important points. Another greenwashing brand is JW Pei. It used to be a small affordable brand (I don’t actually own anything from them), but through intense advertising on social media and wooing influencers, it now markets itself as a high-end vegan brand and has raised its prices to manipulate people into thinking it’s quality. I’ve seen their products in a store - it’s plastic!

    i couldn’t agree with you more.
    fast fashion gives quantity over quality. hard earned $$ literally goes down the drain w these cheap, highly toxic types of material.
    it would be very interesting to see a brand comparison to their own brand. for example: the quality of leather & materials of vintage dooney & bourke, coach, chanel, gucci etc. 🆚 the quality of leather & material used from those brands today.💡
    as always, great informative video!

      they claim they are full grain italian leather.
      & then i bought a 1990’s vintage all weather leather bag & somehow the quality & stitching & leather seems diff. i know there’s the given difference bc of age, but somehow the quality seems diff. so i’m sure so many of us, not being leather artisans or experts, are very curious!

I have some leather ( funny how leather spellchecked to league and I didn’t notice 🤦‍♀️)coach bags from well over ten years ago which to this day the leather looks amazing but I refuse to buy from them anymore because the quality compared to the price just isn’t there. I've known about this for years. Been following fast fashion and looking into how people are getting burned by the luxury fashion as well. Besides being cheap of low quality, fast fashion feeds upon the insecurities of the individual with a false sense of abundance. Most when they have 25+ each of jeans, t-shirts, dresses, skirts, sweaters and so on are pleased to have so much.
    I have a few items made from PU leather and it's peeling. It's quite difficult to get nice items when on a very tight budget. 40% of the working population in the US are in the low salary bracket. I'm thinking of mid range items, which are easily affordable for the middle class.
    Until there is more real oversight all over the world, the landfills will overflow.

  • @petergriffin8156
    @petergriffin8156 3 місяці тому

    Totally agreed. I do think the approach and marketing of this brand are well positioned in Taiwan. Why? You cannot expect people to care for green initiatives when they (locals) make barely 21K usd a year on average. Buying a long lasting bag made of genuine leather for $1000+ doesn't sound appealing to them, but a close looking bottom choice for $80 dose. Hence why the sales representative cannot converse in English to sell the bag. The brand doesn't need to, as the main target of their customers don't speak English anyways.
    Cheap, shiny stuff, heavy on branding and quantity, low on materials and quality, foreign-sounding brand names, marked up prices with heavy discounts for no apparent reason = a perfect recipe in a tiny market like Taiwan.
    Kudos to their marketing team.

    It's crazy to me how brands are allowed to label their products as "vegan leather", WTF is even vegan leather? That's an oxymoron, leather by definition is made from an animal. They manage to fool consumers that aren't very aware of these marketing tactics, it should be mandatory to label it with what's it's actually made of. I bet a lot of people wouldn't buy it if they checked the label and it said plastic instead of "vegan leather" or "PU leather".

    While I appreciate the option of vegan leather I wish it was only made from fruits, veggies, plant resources instead of plastic, otherwise it's not even an eco friendly alternative.
