It was just after the war in my country - my parents were in New Zealand which although not damaged by the war , had all sorts of restrictions and rationing until 1950. My parents lived in an old caravan made of wood with some canvas addition for 3 years while my Dad built their new home on his weekends. He had been a soldier during the war. All their photos during this time show them SO smart and well dressed in fashions of the day..although Dad only had one suit and a sport jacket. Mum made all her own dresses apart from her wedding suit. and several winter coats. Thanks for a great film to watch!
An era of unrivalled beauty. Although you can see a few avant-garde trends emerging from the post-war mentality, in this clip you can see there is still the utmost respect for timeless attributes of form, elegance, and modesty. This is fashion as it should be: Accessible, affordable, beautiful and personable.
@@17thcentury_girl People with less money would often make their own. I had a conversation with my mother about this a few days ago, she said they very rarely bought new clothes. They more often bought fabric instead. And they weren't poor either, they just weren't that rich.

@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 In your working job, if you made 0.62 to 1 dollar an hour, you could afford a dress by the end of an 8 hour shift. An average dress, all of which already resembled the pieces worn here (I wouldn't go to say that all these pieces are above anything normal people wore), would be about $7 -$10 dollars. Wasn't expensive, unless you were looking for a $30 municipal overcoat or a silk pencil skirt. A lot of people purchased cheaper in vacation areas and more expensive in areas like Chicago, San Francisco, areas of Manhattan near the park, Miami etc.

The contrast with modern runways! Even though these models are very thin, they look healthy rather than emaciated and drugged out. And they smile and look at the audience instead of keeping a fixed, angry stare at nothing.
model sizes weren't as standardized back then, especially for smaller fashion lines. So you saw a bit more variety. Most of them were slim but not as emaciated as some of the models we've seen since the 90s.
