I enjoyed your rankings and I like your pace and formatting. You don’t spend too much time on each film which is nice. Also, you don’t waste our time at the beginning by spending five or ten minutes describing what you’re going to do and why you’re going to do it. You just get right into the rankings within 30 seconds which I really appreciate. Thank you.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the formatting! Sometimes it can be hard to find the right balance between information/details and pacing, so it's good to hear when it works.
1 Die Another Day, 2. Quantum of Solace, 3. Never Say Never Again, 4. Diamonds Are Forever, 5. Casino Royale (1967) Bet you weren't expecting that. Neither was I. Oh I meant these are my bottom 5. But wait. Die Another Day has a great first third, a brilliant swordfight, a superb car chase, an ice cold femme fatale, and Flemingesque pisstake attitude from Bond. Quantum has a sharp opening, weird dynamic with Mr White, brilliant setpieces, the moving death of Matthis; and jaunty agent Fields. NSNA has Barbara Carrera and Klaus Maria Brandauer, enough said. Diamonds Are Forever has a great song, Mr Kidd and Mr Wint; and a car that travels on edge down an alley. Casino Royale has David Niven. Who could make a better Bond? Lazenby
I understand that Octopussy might by a ridiculous title but it was the name of an Ian Fleming title. That was the first Bond film I saw in the theater at the age of 9. As for Moore dressed as a clown, he was in a circus so that isn't a big deal. He also happened to dress as the same clown as the deceased 009 which harkened back to the beginning. I actually liked that. Octopussy is underrated. I believe it is getting more love now than it used to. Of Moore's final three films, this is the most fun. Sure, the plot is convoluted but it is still a blast to watch.
Octopussy also features Bond in an ape suit, telling a tiger to sit and pretending to be Tarzan. The Orlov scenes are great but most of it is atrocious.

we know the james bond franchise is so unique that every list I see on youtube has very different rankings. just discovered your channel as this video pop up in my recommendations, keep the good work! greetings from brazil!
Hey, new viewer and just subbed to the channel. Very cool video. I’ve only seen a handful of Bond films, but now I know which ones I need to check out next. If you enjoy the horror genre, was wondering if maybe you could do a Rankography for the Hellraiser film franchise? Would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on each film.
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! I've actually only seen the first few Hellraisers and not in a long time, so it might be a while before I get around to that franchise as a whole. I do have reviews and a rankography for the entire Halloween franchise though, if you're interested: ua-cam.com/play/PLPxg7zDn5BGer3dxw9JPX4l3qaxfcPoNx.html
Thanks! I really need to get around to doing video reviews of del Toro's other films at some point. He's one of my favorite directors and the only other video I've done for him is a review of his Nightmare Alley remake.
Thank you for sharing your ranking. I differ sizeably with 3 of the films which ought to be higher on your list: Thunderball, For Your Eyes Only, and License to Kill. Thunderball has virtues of Tom Jones vocals, nice yacht (gadget), and beautifully dangerous Fiona Volpe who deliciously plays the bad girl. You are correct: underwater battle needs more editing and shortening. For Your Eyes Only has 11 minutes of "chase" including knife-studded motorcycles, and then the beat-up old car chase - what a hoot. Opening Title Song is beautiful. The Alps Chalet adds a nice touch - too bad the blonde spoiled it. Locke's wire-rimmed glasses add menace. License to Kill features the gorgeous but sassy Carey Lowell with wonderful chemistry with Dalton; Zerbe masterfully plays an evil drug smuggler. Bond's chasing a prop plane on a ski is wonderfully envisioned and executed. Finally, you appropriately placed Tomorrow Never Dies but you overlooked the wonderfully seductive Teri Hatcher - mature woman for a change and beautiful, and her contribution. As Judi has retired as "M", I would love to see the sassy secretary under Brosnan rise from the ranks to play M and dish it out to Bond. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Since you seem to like Thunderball a lot more than I do, I'm curious about your thoughts on Never Say Never Again? By the way, this ranking only features my very brief thoughts on the films. If you want more than a paragraph opinion summary of each, you can check out my full reviews for all 27 films where I discuss each movie in far more detail.
I enjoyed the video. Thanks for keeping it clean - refreshing. I generally agree with most of your ranking. However, No Time to Die will never crack my top 10 though because of the ending. Bond can't die. Ha. Skyfall is my #1 but your top 5 are spot on with mine.
I love hearing all different opinions of the Bond franchise. Similar to franchises like Godzilla and Friday the 13th, it's not perfect but fans usually know that and don't usually come after someone for having a different opinion compared to Star Wars or Harry Potter. Hearing your personal rankings is just as fascinating. Here are my personal rankings from the EON Productions. 25-20: The ones I watch the least. 19-17: The ones I think are good or the very least decent, but are not my favorites. Everything from 16 and onward are my favorites, but 9-1 are the essential Bond films I would recommend to newcomers. 25. Quantum of Solace 24. Diamonds are Forever 23. Die Another Day 22. For Your Eyes Only 21. Spectre 20. A View to a Kill 19. The Man with the Golden Gun 18. The Living Daylights 17. No Time to Die 16. Octopussy 15. Tomorrow Never Dies 14. You Only Live Twice 13. Thunderball 12. Live and Let Die 11. Moonraker 10. The World is Not Enough 9. On Her Majesty's Secret Service 8. Casino Royale 7. Dr. No 6. From Russia with Love 5. Licence to Kill 4. Skyfall 3. The Spy Who Loved Me 2. Goldeneye 1. Goldfinger
I agree, James Bond seems to have one of the kinder fandoms in general. Some people still get really worked up about the Bond actors, but in general people's opions of the films are less hostile. Nice to see some Goldfinger love in your ranking!
10: Live and Let Die 9: GoldenEye 8: The Spy Who Loved Me 7: Thunderball 6: Dr. No 5: Skyfall 4: Goldfinger 3: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service 2: From Russia With Love 1: Casino Royale
Good ranking and excellent insight on every James Bond movie. I can’t include Casino Royale (1964) and Never Say Never Again, because their the only two films I don’t own/haven’t seen. I definitely have a few hot takes, Here’s mine: 25. Moonraker 24. Diamonds are Forever 23. Die Another Day 22. Quantum of Solace 21. A View to a Kill 20. Thunderball 19. Spectre 18. Octopussy 17. The Man with the Golden Gun 16. For Your Eyes Only 15. You Only Live Twice 14. The Living Daylights 13. Live and Let Die 12. The World is Not Enough 11. No Time To Die 10. Dr. No 9. License to Kill 8. Tomorrow Never Dies 7. The Spy Who Loved Me 6. Skyfall 5. From Russia With Love 4. Goldeneye 3. Casino Royale 2. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service 1. Goldfinger
Thank you! To be fair, there's probably no rush to watch those other two haha. I definitely can't argue with a Goldfinger win! And nice to see OHMSS so high up too.
1 No Time To Die (easily) 2 Spectre 3 Dr No 4 Skyfall 5 The Spy Who Loved Me 6 Goldfinger 7 Casino Royale 8 For Your Eyes Only 9 Live and Let Die 10 From Russia With Love 11 The Man With The Golden Gun 12 License To Kill 13 Quantum of Solace 14 The Living Daylights 15 Thunderball 16 A View To A Kill 17 You Only Live Twice 18 Diamonds Are Forever 19 Octopussy 20 Moonraker 21 On Her Majesty's Secret Service 22 Goldeneye 23 World Is Not Enough 24 Tomorrow Never Dies 25 Die Another Day
Very interesting ranking, Harry! Big Craig fan, though the same apparently cannot be said of Brosnan haha. Where would you place Casino Royale 1967 and Never Say Never Again in your overall ranking?
OMG - you did a Bond ranking video! I love seeing these. No two are the same. Here’s my own list. 25. _Diamonds are Forever_ 24. _Moonraker_ 23. _Thunderball_ 22. _The Man with the Golden Gun_ 21. _A View to a Kill_ 20. _Quantum of Solace_ 19. _Licence to Kill_ 18. _On Her Majesty’s Secret Service_ 17. _The Spy Who Loved Me_ 16. _For Your Eyes Only_ 15. _Octopussy_ 14. _Die Another Day_ 13. _Dr. No_ 12. _You Only Live Twice_ 11. _The Living Daylights_ 10. _Live and Let Die_ 9. _Skyfall_ 8. _Spectre_ 7. _Goldfinger_ 6. _From Russia with Love_ 5. _No Time to Die_ 4. _GoldenEye_ 3. _The World is not Enough_ 2. _Tomorrow Never Dies_ 1. _Casino Royale_
Agreed! It's such a big and varied franchise, so it's always fun seeing everybody's different rankings and picking out patterns. For instance, looks like somebody's a big Brosnan-era fan!
@@MainelyMovies It really warmed my heart to see that you are just as bemused as I am with the praise lavished upon _Thunderball_ . Between that movie and _Never Say Never Again_ , it’s kind of insane how a plot about hijacked nuclear weapons could prove to be so plodding and deathly dull. Pro tip : watch John Woo’s _Broken Arrow_ instead!
Haha yeah, that one definitely seems to have a lot of very passionate fans. I love the shark pool, but for whatever reason, the story never manages to grab me. I actually haven't seen that one yet. The only Broken Arrow I've seen is the western from the 50s.
@@MainelyMovies maybe it's nostalgia that I love NSNA but Spectre was flat...I liked Fatima Blush and other characters in NSNA. In fact Daniel Craig's first three, I love...while his last two were no fun.
Have For your eyes only and Thunderball top 10...Goldfinger probably number 1...Skyfall 2 and Casino 3... Apart from the start and finish Golden Gun is boring so that would be near the bottom.. We see what we see and it's a great list.. The new Bond will have a tough act to follow. Great work keep them coming
Nice top 3, pretty close to what I have. I can understand that with The Man With the Golden Gun. I used to dislike that one too and then one day it just clicked with me, for whatever reason. Now it's up there as one of my Moore-era favorites. Agreed, I'm really curious how they handle the follow-up to No Time to Die. Also really curious to see who are next Bond is!
I'm glad that you put The Man With the Golden Gun higher than most people place it. I friggin love that movie, and for the life of me, I have no idea what I like so much about it. It's by all accounts an ugly picture w/ a horrible screen size ratio, and feels almost made for television. I just feel so relaxed whenever that movie is on. No idea why
It's one that's really grown on me over the years. I didn't like it all that much the first time I saw it, but I seem to like it a bit more with each rewatch.
FYEO at 23!! Girl, you're breaking my heart. FYEO is IMO the best Bond film....It has everything in it, the story structure is brilliant, nothing patchy about it at all....And you have DAF, QOS, and every other Moore film above it!! 🥺🥺🥺🥺😵💫😵💫😵💫😲😯😯😯
It would be around 10 for me. But there’s definitely some “patchy” stuff in there. The pre-title sequence, the jokey ending, Bebe, and the hockey fight jump to mind.
@@MainelyMovies I wouldn’t go that far. I get what it’s trying to do, and I’m glad they made the film more serious, but…it’s mid. in almost every aspect. I like melina, columbo, and when bond kicks the car off the cliff. the rest is completely forgettable. bebe is more cringe than christmas jones, and the villain is possibly the most boring in the series. FYEO’s problem was that when they decided to make it more serious, they also decided to take out most of the excitement. it’s falling down my list, but VTAK is still moore’s worst entry.
Well done! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on our favorite series! Shame Daniel Craig had to be selfish and make it about him instead of the fans during what should have been a high note/year for the character.
Interesting fact: 15 EON Productions James Bond films in 25 years(1962-1987). Plus of course 1967 Casino Royale and 1983 NSNA. And then: only 10 films in 36 years(1987-2023)!? What a huge slowdown after 1987....................
They definitely don't release them like they used to! There were good stretches of time where we were getting one every year, which seems crazy today for a franchise of this caliber.
@@MainelyMovies I'd be interested in hearing your take on Casino Royale (1954) ua-cam.com/video/ztsXWp0nj2c/v-deo.html This isn't, strictly speaking, a movie, but it is the earliest appearance of Bond on screen. It does have several points of interest - a Bond girl who moves the plot forward (as opposed to being passive), weird and inappropriate nationality swapping, the earliest Bond jokes, and a memorable turn from the late great Peter Lorre. Maybe a comparison of Casino Royale 54, 67 & 06? Curiously each one of these has retained certain elements from the novel which the other two haven't. '67 retains the hallucinogenic torture of all things!!! 2006's claims to be the most faithful adaptation but it has been transposed to Eastern Europe and the 2000s.

Awesome! I think they all have their merits, but Connery is definitely that classic Bond that immediately comes to mind for me when I think of the series.
Yeah you lost me with TWINE and FYEO so low on the list. And beneath QOS and AVTAK?? I HEAVILY disagree lol, but we each have our own lists...that's what makes the fandom fun. Great job on the vid! 👍🏿👍🏿
I prefer AVTAK to TWINE. It's a lot more funny. Yes, I agree Stacey is badly written but Zorin and Mayday are memorable. Elektra is the most interesting part of TWINE, and Zukovsky should have been a regular feature of the Brosnan era Bonds.
TWINE had a lot of potential. there are elements there that could have made it one of the best in the series. but…it couldn’t put it all together the way the better films do. perhaps if renard had been more interesting or dr. jones had been more believable, this would have been a lot higher up my list.
Having not seen the film in 4.5 years now, I can say that off the top of my head, I've completely forgotten who the villain even is in that one. So... yes. 😆
My the man with the golden gun then on her majesty's secret service then spectre then oid casino royale 1967 then die another day then a view to a kill then diamonds are forever then for your eye only then hot take golden finger then from Russia with love then Dr no then Moonraker then Thunderball then the world is not enough then then the living daylight them never say never again then spy who loved me then licence to kill then live and let die then octopussy then casino royale 2006 then you only live twice them quantum of solace then no time to die then golden eye then Skyfall
My Top-10 is: 1965, 1967, 1969, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987(!!!), 1995. ***** For me, the best James Bond film ever is: "The Living Daylights"(1987)!!! ***** Also, I really-really like LTK(1989). It's probably my #11? Bond film. It is very difficult to rank the films beyond the Top-10. LTK(1989) is a very good violent revenge movie. DAF(1971) should have been like LTK(1989)! ***** By the way, I think Kevin McClory's NSNA(1983) was actually perfectly fine movie! Mainly thanks to Sean Connery of course, who was still such a charming gentleman agent even at the age of 53! Like Connery, I think that older Roger Moore(Octopussy, AVTAK) was much better than a younger version of him in LALD and TMWTGG. ***** The worst Bond movies were Spectre(2015) and NTTD(2021). I'm not a fan of Daniel Craig. His era was so fucking depressing. Even his first 3 movies were barely "tolerable" to me....................
Interesting that the two Dalton-era films are that far apart for you! What is it about The Living Daylights that puts it so much higher for you? Or about Licence to Kill that drops it down?
Haha, thanks. It seems like most people usually disagree with me on Thunderball. It's always fun rewatching Dr. No and seeing the starting point of so many Bondisms and tropes that still continue to be used 50 years later!
My Controversial ranking of the James Bond movies 1962-2021 including the unofficial* films (I love all the films in their own way and none of them are bad except No Time to Die) 1. Nice! Interesting to see Casino Royale so high and most of the other Craig-era films near the bottom. What is it about No Time to Die that makes it a bad movie for you?
@@MainelyMovies the inauthentic diversity checklist, the unconvincing romance they're trying to sell us again when it didn't work in spectre, and the fact they actually KILL JAMES BOND might have something to do with why NTTD is a flaming pile of dog shit. the writers do not care and haven't for over a decade. it's like they saw how badly they screwed up spectre and took that as a challenge to screw this one up more.
I definitely agree with you on #27, that is a never watch again for me. Skyfall is my #1. Casino Royale, Tomorrow Never Dies, Goldfinger, License To Kill, No Time To Die, and Dr. No are all in my Top 7. I feel as though the two I most need to rewatch are On Your Majesty's Secret Service and The Man With The Golden Gun because I love the ends of both but the start of both movies are very familiar and slow-paced for me.
Oh man, that's what I said too but then I went ahead and watched it again... and then a third time so I could write my review the other year haha. Nice, bit of a mix of eras in your Top 7.
To me there's 5 Bonds worth having to maximize the fun without getting too annoyed with actors (looking at you, Pepper). 1. FRWL 2. OHMSS 3. DAF 4. Moonraker 5. TLD
I have Goldfinger in the lower regions of the Top 10. I would have rated Goldfinger higher, but I found most of the Fort Knox sequence laughably bad. The scenes of everyone collapsing the second the planes fly over just looked silly to me.
@@MainelyMovies yes everywhere he goes, the clerk, concierge, or foreign grocery bag boy recognizes an out of uniform British military officer, with “Oh, Commander Bond, what can I do for you?” -lol 😂
@@MainelyMovies Yeah really he’s like the opposite of a spy because everybody knows them he’s not a part of covert operations he’s a part of overt operations
Which makes it even funnier when he tries to be sneaky with the whole Universal Exports cover. See, this must be why he has to use all those silly animal disguises throughout the series 😆
Am I only one who actually put Die Another Day on top? Just kidding I don't like it. Other 3 Brosnan Bond films are good. I can't decide between Skyfall and Casino Royale which one is the best I give both number 1 Bond films. I grew up to watch Daniel Craig era.
@@MainelyMovies I must be an exception because I didn’t grow up in the 60’s & Absolutely HATED OHMSS when I was 13, but then resaw it again with Stymey @ 17 & it was Incredible after my taste matured. A Family friend came back after vacationing to Piz Gloria now I want to go there soo bad.

Thank you, yeah not really. Skyfall just enjoyed a lot, proudly breaking my top 5. Craig quite comparable to Bourne and I preferred the latter's original trilogy to Craig's era. I only saw Craig's Spectre on the big screen, thought it was 'meh', and kind of stuck on that. I like Casino Royale but have a couple of issues with it and prefer the twelve above it enjoyment-wise.
Please read my thoughts why for me THUNDERBALL is the best classic Bond movie and i hope you will rewatch it baring in mind my following perspectives: 1) CONNERY'S PERFORMANCE:: In Dr No, Connery is still experimenting with the role and he is great but yet a bit stiff. In FRWL he explores more the "dark" side of the character. In Goldfinger he adds more charm and "witticism" and completes the formula. But in Thunderball he IS James Bond and the formula is perfected. Connery's performance on this is truly unique. He shows the greatest confidence ever. His style, his movements, the way he speaks, his one-liners, his demeanor and even the way he looks, everything that was built in the previous 3 films, reach perfection. He is "dark" and gritty and at the same time charming and stylish. He looks tough and ruthless which at the same time combines with a dark dry witt coated with venure sophistication and style. And he obviously enjoys playing the character more than ever, either before or after. 2) PLOT AND VILAIN: This movie tends on focusing on Bond for the first time and not the vilain. It is a celebration of Bond himself as a character. The plot is simple but smart and realistically believable. It has some great twists: It is not just the first reveal that SPECTRE wants to steal two atomic bombs. It is how they do it. The whole idea of seducing and killing a flying officer (Major Dervall) and replacing him with another pilot after a plastic surgery and how Bond finds out about it, is intriguing and it is revealed to us progressively and not from the start. As for the vilains: I always liked most the "invisible Blofeld" which we have only in FRWL and in this. As for Largo, he is not "just a boring vilain with an eye patch". He seems stylish, resourcefull and smart. He is dangerous and twisted. And most of all he is not relying on his henchmen to do the job (as Goldfinger for instance). He fights himself, he dives himself, he leads his men into battle. As for Fiona Volpe, what can i say! She is the icon of every "femme fatale" of the franchise. 3) THE SPY ELEMENTS: When Bond gets to the Bahamas he is doing a great spy work there and seems unstopable: -He first gets in contact with the sister of Dervall. -Then through her he discovers Largo. -Then he is spying into his house. -Then he is diving under his boat to find out where the bombs are, he takes pictures, he fights, he gets attacked with grenades. -Then he tries to seduce Fiona and find out more. -He is captured and manages resoursefully to escape but gets wounded. -He gets surrounded but manages to escape again by killing her. -Then he disguise him self as an enemy diver and finds out where the bombs are hidden underwater. -He gets attacked again and escapes. -He notifies where the bombs are to the Parachute Special Forces. -He then enters into the underwater battle him self. -He heroically stops Largo to escape by fighting till the end inside the boat. This is a far better spy work than in Goldfinger where in the second half of the movie he is a prisoner οf the vilain. 4) ACTION, UNDERWΑTER SCENES AND FINAL BATTLE: The action scenes are great. The first fight with Jack Bouvar in the beginning is gritty and violent. So is the final battle with Largo (even if the bad projector scene behind it is an unfortunate momentt). The gadjets are believable, smart (geiger counter, breathing machine, underwater camera) and not rediculous. Even the jet-pack which seems over the top, was a real thing and a revolutionary invention. You often say that the underwater scenes are "boring and confusing". I wouldn' t say so: The underwater shooting was a revolutionary achievement for the time and especially the final underwater battle was a unique sample of cinematography for 1965! The crisp underwater photography is excellently choreographing so many divers under the water at the same time in a full scale battle of epic proportions with some very gritty and violent moments. Such a complicated action scene has never been replicated in any other movie since. 5) THE "ESCAPISM" ELEMENT: It is also the ultimate "escapism" movie. Beautiful exotic places, wonderful scenery and landscapes, incomparable lifestyle, amazing women (Fiona Volpe is an amazing femme fatale and Domino one of the hottest Bondgirls). some of the greatest one-liners in the franchise, while it is even considered alongside with Goldfinger a "fashion icon" movie! 6) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Thunderball is also historically extremely significant for the franchise that we love: It broke the smashing box office records. It is to this date the highest grossing Bond movie of all time (inflation counted). If Goldifinger created the "Bondmania", then Thunderball turned it into a high fever. The flms remarkable achievements transformed James Bond from a popular fictional hero, into a phenomenon in cinema history 7) FINAL THOUGHTS: If Goldfinger found the "classsic formula" of Bond movies, then Thunderball perfected it. It is the timeless epitome of the classic Bond movies, before Connery got tired of the role in You Only Live Twice and before the production turned the franchise to a more comical version of Bond, with Diamonds Are Forever and the Roger Moore era. Initially in Goldfinger but mainly in Thunderball, Connery' Bond reaches the fine line of perfection, as he becomes at the same time tough and refined, stylish and ruthless, a real killer with a sense of humor, who lives on the edge and therefore enjoys every minute of his life as if it were his last. Sorry for the long text. Just think about all that when you decide to rewatch Thunderball.
Hi ΕΜΜΑΝΟΥΗΛ, I appreciate your detailed thoughts on Thunderball and I'm really happy to hear how enthusiastic you are about it. It's never been my favorite of the Bond movies, but next time I watch it I'll definitely keep what you said in mind. 1) Interesting, so Connery shows a 4th movie stride for you? I think he reaches peak Bond in his 3rd outing with Goldfinger. I definitely agree with you that he seems to lose some of his interest in the character after Thunderball though. YOLT is the first one where he occasionally starts to feel like he's phoning it in a bit. 2) I'm not sure where you got the quotes about Largo being boring and defined only by his eyepatch, but I'm glad you find him so intriguing. He's just underwhelming for me. 3) The spy elements definitely take an extraordinarily goofy turn here (especially when compared to peak Connery-era espionage in From Russia With Love), but I'm glad that you enjoy it. 4) The shark pool scene is enjoyable to an extent, as is the infiltration of Largo's estate. Hmmm again, I'm not sure where you're coming up with these quotes that you're attributing to me. In the 30 seconds of this video about Thunderball, I mention the technical impressiveness of the scuba scenes for their time period, but mention that they are tedious and dull for me. Some of the later Bond scuba sequences are much more impressive and well done, in my opinion. Glad that they capture your attention and imagination so much though! 5) Another Caribbean setting certainly is picturesque at least! 6) That's awesome. Seems like it got quite the boost riding on the coat-tails of the wonderful Goldfinger. It's too bad that YOLT wasn't able to maintain the Bondmania in quite the same way. I wonder if the goofiness of Casino Royale 1967 cut into that? I only talk about each movie in the franchise for about 30 seconds in this ranking, so if you'd like to hear my own more extensive thoughts on Thunderball, feel free to watch my Thunderball review. How do you feel about Never Say Never Again, considering it's another adaptation of this same story and is another Connery Bond movie?
@@MainelyMovies Thank you for your answer. I will surely watch the review on your channel. Never Say Never Again was a missed opportunity. The music is terrible. The whole production seems llow for a Bond movie. But there is a good point a it. Connery is great there playing an older Bond. He seems even in better shape than when he played Bond in Diamonds are Forever 12 years earlier. In conclusion Octopussy of the same year is a better overall movie but Connery was a joy to see and more charismatic than Moore imo
I agree, I do think that Never Say Never Again probably would've been a complete miss if it weren't for Connery's return. I'm just glad that the story plays up that he is older rather than just trying to treat him as the same young Bond that he was before.
The underwater scenes are fantastic but Thunderball is a bit dull despite the likes of Volpe and Largo. I rewatched NSNA and it was far more fun although it loses something when Fatima dies.
IMO the franchise wouldn't have lasted as long as it has without the introduction of Roger Moore, who was, incidentally, the originally-designated Bond by Broccoli and Saltzman, only he wasn't available as he was doing TV (I believe "The Saint"). Moore was the Elvis of the franchise and took it to superstardom. If you wanted to delete one of the Bond actors to create the biggest hole in the franchise, it'd be Moore.
The Moore-era definitely had some memorably entertaining stuff! But I agree that the franchise probably would've suffered if there was another Eon Connery film after DAF.
I'll give my comments based on your rankings: 27) Casino Royale 1967 - Agree, this movie is awful. 26) Never Say Never Again - Agree, but I do think that they try to be a spoof at times and serious at times. 25) Die Another Day - I do rank it as one of the five weakest EON Bond films, but I do put four other movies below it. It does go off of the rails once Bond goes to Cuba. 24) Thunderball - This is a mid-tier Bond film. It should be ranked closer to the middle. I agree that it has pacing issues, especially the underwater scenes, but it is still an entertaining film. 23) For Your Eyes Only - Another mid-tier film for me. It does have casting issues, as Roger Moore had to carry this one all by himself, but it doesn't have the major writing issues that some of the other EON films do. To me the poorly written ones get the bottom spots. 22) The World is Not Enough - This is a top 10 Bond film. I really can't understand why it gets ranked so low by some people. It has a great story, great villains and a great performance by Brosnan. People hate Christmas Jones because they either hate the actress or they think that she is "too hot to be smart", which to me is nonsensical. 21) You Only Live Twice - Yet another mid-tier Bond movie that you rank too low. Seems like a theme here. 20) Octopussy - Another top 10 Bond film. The name of the film comes from the title of the Ian Fleming novel. Rating this movie poorly for its title is a bit laughable. 19) Quantum of Solace - This one is a dumpster fire. The writing isn't there and all the action scenes were messed up by bad editing and camera work. This movie, much like Casino Royale 1967, is just incoherent with a ridiculous plot. The evil master plan of the villain is to sell water at a profit. When I told someone who hadn't seen the movie the make profit off of water plot, they thought that I was punking them. As far as the "having to follow Casino Royale" point, you could argue that Casino Royale looks better because it came right between two of the five weakest EON films in Die Another Day and Quantum of Solace. 18) Diamonds Are Forever - While this isn't a masterpiece, there are several weaker entries you haven't mentioned yet. 18th overall is where I rank this film though, so I can't complain about your placement for this one, just most of those ranked below it. I really can't understand someone wanting more Lazenby, he was awful. The guy couldn't act. 17) A View to a Kill - A little higher than I have it, but not too far off. I put it 20th. 16) Tomorrow Never Dies - Another top 10 Bond film that you have ranked too low. Obviously, you just don't like Brosnan. If any tenure of Bond films felt like they were trying to copy another franchise, it was the Craig era with the Jason Bourne Films. 15) Moonraker, you have this one higher than I do, but not by too much. 14) The Man with the Golden Gun - Here's one that I place a little higher than you do, but not by too much. I agree that Sheriff Pepper is bad, but Mary Goodnight is a fun Bond Girl. 13) Spectre - This one belongs far lower on the list. The shoehorning in of Spectre and Blofeld ruins this movie, as well as its main plot, which they stole from an Austin Powers movie. There really isn't anything enjoyable in this film. 12) Dr No - A little higher than I have it, I put it at 15th. Connery is great in this film, which is why it did so well. 11) The Living Daylights - I rank this pretty much equal to For Your Eyes Only, which is why I see your ranking here as a bit odd. These two movies are pretty much the same movie with different actors. 10) License to Kill - I put this one 11th overall, so we are about equal on these two. 9) Live and Let Die - another one we have ranked about the same, I put it 8th. Jinx is the worst Bond character though. 8) No Time to Die - This is the worst of the Eon films. It was as if they were trying to make the worst possible Bond movie without going into a full spoof like the 1967 Casino Royale. Why does the villain change his motivation from a revenge plot to a "Let's destroy the World" plot? Who knows? James Bond just standing there and waiting to die is the worst decision a Bond movie ever made. This is the worst written Bond movie outside of the 1967 spoof. You can tell that most of the actors, especially Craig, are only there to pick up a paycheck. 7) On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Yet another bottom 5 Eon Bond film. The entire plot in this one is held together by a string of coincidences, it has the worst casting of any Bond film, and some of the worst special effects and editing in the two early fight scenes. The only positive in the whole film is the score, but most Bond films have good musical scores, so it can't be saved by that. 6) Goldeneye - This one belongs in the top 3, so you do have it too low. 5) The Spy Who Loved Me - Another top three Bond movie that you have a little low. 4) From Russia with Love - This is where I have this one, so I can't complain. 3) Skyfall - I have this one as 10th overall, so you have it a bit high. 2) Goldfinger - I have this one in the top three as well. 1) Casino Royale 2006 - You have this one too high. I put it as a mid-pack Bond film. It is a good film, but it doesn't feel like a Bond film. In fact, I call it the Bond film for people that don't like James Bond. While your list isn't bad, it is disappointing that the movies with clearly bad writing (No Time to Die, OHMSS, Spectre, Quantum of Solace and Die Another day) didn't populate the bottom of the rankings of the EON produced films.

There's only 25 Bond films in the franchise, so why say 27!! CR 67 & NSNA 83 are not franchises or part of the franchise. I don't agree with all your rankings (hey, that's life😁) but I enjoyed your tone, and excitement fir this beloved franchise that means the world to me(hence my channel) I think you need to rediscover NSNA, it's so much better than several official EON films, including Diamonds Are Forever, Quantum Of Solace, and more entertaining and fun and better paced than the original Thunderball and better than DAD.
Because it's my ranking of all the James Bond films? I clearly state in the video that CR 67 and NSNA are non-Eon. I'm glad you enjoy NSNA so much, but it's definitely one of the weakest for me. Feel free to watch my full review of that film (or any of the other 26 Bond movies) if you'd like my complete thoughts on each one individually. They're all linked in the description of this video.
probably because it's the one film in the franchise most likely to put you to sleep. the pacing is awful and the villain is boring. if the film didn't spend so much time at the spa, and if the underwater scenes weren't such a snoozefest, then it might be deserving of the ranking you give it.

Nice list! You've got all 6 Bonds in your top 7, that's pretty impressive. Though it seems like Casino Royale is the only Craig-Era Bond that you like very much. I'm surprised to see Spectre at the bottom of the pile.
Spectre and quantum of solace are criminally underrated/ under appreciated there not top tier i would say quantum of solace mid tier and then spectre higher end of mid tier
your top 7 are my top 7, though not one of them is in the same spot. but this list is the most like my own i have ever seen. you even share my hatred for the last two craig films. pity the series hasn't had an original thought since skyfall. you and i only have 9, 20, 21, and 25 the same, but nearly everything else is in the same general area.
Hi! I wouldn't go as far as to say I hate Thunderball, but it's definitely one of the more dull films in the franchise for me. It has some things that I like, but it never engages me like most of the rest of the Bond movies.
It's all about the Bond portrayal to me, I'll cringe through Hallie Berry and skip the para glide CGI and watch DAD before I watch a Dalton or Craig movie simply because I just find Brosnan so watchable, particularly against the dark serious grounded Bonds, I was brought up with Connery and Moore so Bond to me is fun and escapism suave charisma cool and panache first, then you can build a movie around that character as serious or camp as the time sees fit.
Interesting! Yeah for me it's typically a combination of the plot and style of the film, more so than just the actor. I'm eventually going to do a Bond Era ranking and a Bond Actor ranking and I think they'd actually be fairly different for me.
@@MainelyMovies Yeah I'm much older than you so I'm used to a completely different Bond The problem with wanting just a dark serious realistic movie character is that he's no longer the character James Bond that Connery made unique from all the other action characters, no cool fun and escapism He's now the same as everyone else, Craig's Bond is the same, Connery Moore and Brosnan had the charisma suave and panache that made every guy want to be Bond all the way to the end of the last century The movies wouldn't be around without the books but Dalton and Craig's ultra serious approach would have gone nowhere in 1962, LTK turned people off Bond in 89, that's a full 27 years after Dr No Both Moore and Brosnan would have comfortably done what Connery did, you need more than just grit and realism when it comes to a James Bond movie But it's all down to opinions
@@MainelyMovies I can just barely remember as a very young kid Moore replacing Connery, I was a British soldier based in Germany when Dalton turned up and it was all about being as cool as Connery and Moore, in those days a Bond like Craig falling in love and resigning every other movie wouldn't be tolerated, they were just different times and a lady like yourself would I doubt appreciate the Womanizing aspect of Bond, every guy just wanted to be him because of the women, charisma, 1 liners cool and debonair, Dalton did nothing for me but Brosnan was just awesome.... That last thing we wanted from Bond was serious grit, emotions and vulnerability, we wanted fun and escapism

Not so sure. Until recently I didn't rate it, mainly because of its pre-titles sequence, but once past that it's a decent enough film. Melina is a great character and so is Columbo. Kristatos not so much.
Yeah, once you put the worst Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever at 18, I turned it off. You put this trash film over Thunderball, FYEO, YOLT, TWINE. Yeah I'm out

@@greatwuta Quantum of Solace bores me. Something which Diamonds never does. I also rank Tiffany Case and Plenty O' Toole above the female characters in the other two. Diamonds suffers from a bad villain although the Howard Hughes plotline was not a bad idea. Die Another Day is even more corny than Diamonds which takes some doing.
Right? The utter audacity of a woman to have her own personal opinion about something. How dare she? It MUST be female hysteria. How else could a woman possibly have a different opinion about a 27-film franchise than you?

Octopussy is a mixed bag. Orlov's rant to the Politburo and its score are high points in the series, but that's all undermined by ape suits and celebrity cameos from tennis stars who can't act.
Way to be super ageist. You have no idea how old I am. Good riddance, wouldn't want someone as dismissive and close-minded as you creeping around on this channel anyway.

Great video. I enjoyed your perspective. Well done.
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
Lazenby
Even the worst ones have something to enjoy! Well, it's tough for me to find that thing within Casino Royale 1967, but I digress... 😆
Yeah, the majority draw there names right from the novels, even if the stories associated with them have been completely changed ha
Octopussy also features Bond in an ape suit, telling a tiger to sit and pretending to be Tarzan. The Orlov scenes are great but most of it is atrocious.
Totally agree! The context of the clown suit actually adds to the film and works well!
@@frankb821 It destroys the entire film for me.

I love hearing all different opinions of the Bond franchise. Similar to franchises like Godzilla and Friday the 13th, it's not perfect but fans usually know that and don't usually come after someone for having a different opinion compared to Star Wars or Harry Potter. It really warmed my heart to see that you are just as bemused as I am with the praise lavished upon _Thunderball_ .
The only Broken Arrow I've seen is the western from the 50s.
skyfall below the two atrocities that followed it? get help.
I loved this
Thanks, I appreciate that!
I hate Spectre ...but I love Never Say Never Again
Interesting!
It's easily my least favorite of the Moore Era. But I'm glad it's got such passionate fans.
You hit the nail on the head. FYEO is amazing (my #2 of all time).
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Interesting: Your 2nd last and 3rd last from the official Bond Movies, are my 2nd & 3rd best ones. 😅
Oh man haha. Well, it's cool that the Bond franchise has so much variety to allow for that kind of list difference!
Can you do more James Bond rankings? Rank plots, actors, titles, songs ...?
That's the plan eventually!

@@MainelyMovies I'd be interested in hearing your take on Casino Royale (1954)
ua-cam.com/video/ztsXWp0nj2c/v-deo.html
This isn't, strictly speaking, a movie, but it is the earliest appearance of Bond on screen.

@@MainelyMovies Hm, too much on-screen SNOW on TWINE and FYEO?!

Adequate description of Thunderball. Title song was great, though. Love Dr. No.

They're both so striking in completely different ways haha
Please read my thoughts why for me THUNDERBALL is the best classic Bond movie and i hope you will rewatch it baring in mind my following perspectives:
1) CONNERY'S PERFORMANCE:: In Dr No, Connery is still experimenting with the role and he is great but yet a bit stiff.
3) THE SPY ELEMENTS: When Bond gets to the Bahamas he is doing a great spy work there and seems unstopable:
-He first gets in contact with the sister of Dervall.
The flms remarkable achievements transformed James Bond from a popular fictional hero, into a phenomenon in cinema history
7) FINAL THOUGHTS: If Goldfinger found the "classsic formula" of Bond movies, then Thunderball perfected it.
@@thursoberwick1948 I see it the other way, the movie is good while on land
I'll give my comments based on your rankings:
27) Casino Royale 1967 - Agree, this movie is awful.
Nice! So how does all that work out for your own ranking? Seems like we're similarly placed on some and a ways off on others.

Nice, interesting to see Licence to Kill at number one. Both Dalton's are pretty high for you!
@MainelyMovies Timothy Dalton is an incredible Bond. And the movies are really great with great action, storytelling and character work
There's only 25 Bond films in the franchise, so why say 27!!
CR 67 & NSNA 83 are not franchises or part of the franchise.
I don't agree with all your rankings (hey, that's life😁) but I enjoyed your tone, and excitement fir this beloved franchise that means the world to me(hence my channel)
I think you need to rediscover NSNA, it's so much better than several official EON films, including Diamonds Are Forever, Quantum Of Solace, and more entertaining and fun and better paced than the original Thunderball and better than DAD.
They're all linked in the description of this video.
with these Bond lists you always know Die/Day will always be where it is. I don't know why she is doing Thunderball dirty? It's top 10.
Nice, glad you like it!
probably because it's the one film in the franchise most likely to put you to sleep. the pacing is awful and the villain is boring. if the film didn't spend so much time at the spa, and if the underwater scenes weren't such a snoozefest, then it might be deserving of the ranking you give it.
My favourite Bond films are. The Living Daylights. Octopusy. A View To A Kill.
Nice, so late Moore-era and early Dalton-era!

Nice list! You've got all 6 Bonds in your top 7, that's pretty impressive. Though it seems like Casino Royale is the only Craig-Era Bond that you like very much. I'm surprised to see Spectre at the bottom of the pile.
Spectre and quantum of solace are criminally underrated/ under appreciated there not top tier i would say quantum of solace mid tier and then spectre higher end of mid tier
your top 7 are my top 7, though not one of them is in the same spot. but this list is the most like my own i have ever seen. you even share my hatred for the last two craig films. pity the series hasn't had an original thought since skyfall. you and i only have 9, 20, 21, and 25 the same, but nearly everything else is in the same general area.
a fellow Thunderball hater! Hello there!
@@MainelyMovies Yeah I'm much older than you so I'm used to a completely different Bond
The problem with wanting just a dark serious realistic movie character is that he's no longer the character James Bond that Connery made unique from all the other action characters, no cool fun and escapism
He's now the same as everyone else, Craig's Bond is the same, Connery Moore and Brosnan had the charisma suave and panache that made every guy want to be Bond all the way to the end of the last century
The movies wouldn't be around without the books but Dalton and Craig's ultra serious approach would have gone nowhere in 1962, LTK turned people off Bond in 89, that's a full 27 years after Dr No
Both Moore and Brosnan would have comfortably done what Connery did, you need more than just grit and realism when it comes to a James Bond movie
But it's all down to opinions
I mean, I was around for all of the Brosnan era and grew up watching the Connery Bonds before anything else.

It seems to be one with a lot of fans!
Not so sure. Until recently I didn't rate it, mainly because of its pre-titles sequence, but once past that it's a decent enough film. Melina is a great character and so is Columbo. Kristatos not so much.
Don't agree with Thunderball and You only live twice being so low, should be in the top ten.
Nice, looking forward to seeing that in your franchise ranking video!

Quantum of Solace and Die Another Day are worse than Diamonds are Forever.
@@thursoberwick1948 I disagree completely
@@greatwuta Quantum of Solace bores me. Something which Diamonds never does. I also rank Tiffany Case and Plenty O' Toole above the female characters in the other two. Diamonds suffers from a bad villain although the Howard Hughes plotline was not a bad idea.
Die Another Day is even more corny than Diamonds which takes some doing.
@@thursoberwick1948 I'll watch DAD before the other movies mentioned
For Your Eyes Only is the worst Moore Bond movie in this list?! What's wrong with this lady?!
