Any Bond list with NTTD in the top tier is immediately flagged. A Bond who hated being Bond, Kills Bond, not for us, but for HIM. He wanted nothing to do with 007. Craig proves you can never hire an actor who doesn’t love being Bond. He was the first and hopefully the last.
It's my number one. To me it's the perfect Bond movie. It has all the classic Bond elements, a great Cold War plot, and a fantastic performance from Dalton. It's a damn shame he only did two movies.
Very nice to finally see a list with Daylights and FYEO near the top. The former has a criminally underrated actor and score, while the latter has some of the best cinematography of the series - from the action sequences to the way the camera pans from foreground to background in some shots - really creates some next level transitions.
First, I think we should watch DAF when we get together over the holidays...I agree with you on LTK for sure...but Quantum at 20 and lower than AVTAK??? Dang son! Harsh...LOL. Love the list and as always the best entertainment on the web!
Joe, I could watch your content for hours. Your highly personal and witty take on James Bond always makes me feel as if I'm debating with a good friend. The editing and music track is also top notch.
@@STONESGAM Great to hear you think so too Derek! FYEO is definitely a minimalist and Fleming gem for me. A great spy story as well (though many don't see it that way). Sometimes in the top five for me, but definitely always in the top ten. I love the story, themes, dialogue, music, and scenery. As with others, I also regard it as a great follow up to OHMSS.
@@theotsalamandris7572 Agree. It has grown on me big time over the years and the film tones down the slapstick comedy here which plays to Moore's strengths but was overdone during most of his era. Classy Film and the locations were great too with nothing occuring that was that unrealistic or over the top Thanks for the response. Merry Christmas!

@@ricardocantoral7672 in your opinion (which is fine) but you do not speak for everyone. I started watching the series for the 1st time from Dr No onward in order without reading any spoilers/reviews so was completely unbiased and OHMSS was so bad that I literally gave up on James Bond. I thought he (Lazenby) had taken over the series after Connery and if someone hadn't told me a year later that he was just a once off, I wouldn't have seen anything else post-Connery. Have revisted it multiple times and it is just as excruciating. Lazenby is not convincing for a single frame, the hyped romance with Tracy is incredibly forced/downright creepy at times, the plot is one of the worst of the series (DAF level), Blofeld is completely rewritten, and worst of all it is just flat out BORING. Crap movie, will never waste my time on it again.

Great stuff, as always. I've listened to all the podcasts and several times here you brought me straight back to your early episodes (some of your best!). I really enjoyed how you talked about these films through the different themes of what you love about Bond: locations, gadgets, villains, etc. Again, straight from the early days of the podcast. Really enjoyed this one!
Octopussy has to be the most underated bond movie ever. On the other end, I would say honestly Skyfall is the most over-rated - Still a good movie but I wouldnt put it in my top 10.

I also rate Man w the Golden Gun higher than most people place it. It's so soothing to me and I don't know why I enjoy it so much. Screen size ratio sucks, everything looks cheap, humor is corny... I just always re-watch it for some reason
Great list. The only glaring exception for me is Licence to Kill which sits in my Top 10 around the same spot you have No Time To Die, and similar to your justification for No Time To Die, the problems you had with Licence to Kill I can understand but I simply didn’t have those problems when I saw it 10 times in the theater back in 89. Other than that, my list is very similar with the exact same bottom 2.
Really well made and edited video Joe, the hour just flew by! I also like how you gave little intros before each reveal to build the tension. It was a delight to watch with my morning coffee.

@@MrWafflelova 😂Ah the most controversial point on the list! So I’ll answer as fully as I can. The truth in my heart is that they’re ranked in joint place but this is how the tie breaks for me. Skyfall is unquestionably the better _film_ with clearer stakes, stronger villain, and some of the best dialogue in the entire franchise. However I maintain that Spectre is the better _Bond film_ , checking most of the boxes I want ticked while Skyfall vexes me in some very key ways. For every fan that takes issue with Blofeld as Bond’s brother, I actually find M as Bond’s mother far more weird and distracting. I just always prefer Bond and M as headbutting colleagues which Brosnan/Dench and Craig/Fiennes do tremendously well. And so not being invested in that means the killer emotional punch in Skyfall never really works for me. Spectre also has an actual Bond Girl in it all the way through treated with a relatively large degree of respect, whereas Skyfall’s pump/dump/kill/joke approach to Severine - who was a child sex slave - is the most distasteful element in Craig’s entire tenure. It’s noteworthy how Paris Carver is mentioned again and Madeleine Swann has a whole second film devoted to her while Severine is just discarded callously by the filmmakers. (M sort of does double duty as the female lead in Skyfall but making Judi Dench a terrible shot in her swansong leaves a bad taste in my mouth - they should have given her a killer aim like Helen Mirren in RED in my opinion.) On top of that, it doesn’t help that it would take until “Backfire” and “Snow Plane” till I get to action cues that I enjoy from Thomas Newman because most of his material is too underpowered. I’d go further and say that the strength of his “Tennyson” cue reaffirms how Skyfall’s drama peaks too early at the end of the second act. This puts me in a minority but I find I enjoy Spectre more as it goes on - everything up to the train has this casual, meandering Moore-like pacing - but then it really takes off after the train fight when Craig is allowed to get beaten and emotionally rattled. I do concede that the enemies-to-lovers arc for Madeleine and Bond is not given nearly enough time to breathe in Spectre, but this only really stays problematic when the movie is viewed as one big series anticlimax. As a penultimate episode before No Time to Die fully commits to their story (and Seydoux is allowed to act her socks off in that film) Spectre works even better than it does on its initial release. There you go! At least you can understand my thought process even if your feelings on it are vastly different from mine!
We need a rant video about the Fleming books being rewritten/censored/edited by “sensitivity readers”. :) Not a rant, but a good discussion would be interesting.
Once again I'll never ever understand why people dislike Diamonds so much. Even with explanations I will never understand! I think it's one of the most simple and fun Bond films around, not confusing, not filled with horrible humor, and not trying to be something it's not. Just a neat little afternoon Bond adventure
It is boring, silly, weak villain, Connery sleepwalks through it, long stretches of no action, and when action happens it’s not convincing, henchman disappear until the very end. It’s more of a showcase of a dated Vegas with bad comedic elements than a spy thriller

I saw Diamonds Are Forever three times the summer of 71 as a 12 year old. As years pass I can agree with the Blofeld/Tracy continuity issues, but I still think it's more fun than half of the rest....
What’s funny was that they begged Connery to come back to do it after George Lazanby did OHMSS. Eon Productions wanted him back so bad. He only came back for the money

Also I noticed you don't have any Brosnan films in the top 10 unlike more "modern" reviewers, I have the same feeling about these films. Brosnan is great but he was saddled with some of the worst written Bond films along with carrying over the bad parts of the Moore era.

A View to a Kill (1985) 26. Never Say Never Again (1983) My approach, rather than rate each film with a score was to separate the films initially by Bond actor and rate the best of the actors output first, always adding weight to those most honouring the Fleming literary character legacy, combined with script robustness, entertainment value etc. That was the easy bit. A couple of surprises for me in finessing this list over the last few weeks and having watched each film in original release order parallel to the UK cinema re-release this year was where certain key films landed compared to where I might have placed them say 10 years ago (that's just 3 films ago!). Nobody did it better than Connery - except when Peter Hunt directed & everyone else involved was at the top of their game. O.H.M.S.S. remains the benchmark. Dr NO. - so much of what we take for granted in the Bond series was there from the get-go. Including the fantasy and lifestyle projection courtesy of the visions of Terence Young & Ken Adam. That combined with it being more consistent and with less plot dips and screenplay lulls than Goldfinger have it now rating higher than that (but still beneath the masterclass entertainment that is Thunderball - peak Terence Young & Sean Connery but script wise, not quite as consistent as FRWL). Dalton needed that 3rd & 4th film to cement his greatness in being the best portrayal of the literary character ever to grace the screen. TLD is still right up there for me, only losing a little momentum after the scene where he spares Pushkin's life and suffering from a lack of a strong villain/mastermind focus. While the 1st Brosnan film I rate is TND at 12, this is less a criticism of Pierce (who always gave it his best) and more as many have said of the quality & inconsistency of the scripts he was given. The TND David Arnold Soundtrack, still topical plot theme, less of a Bond by numbers script (compared to the "safely" played Goldeneye) and Brosnan's greater assurance in the role win me over on this one. QoS shows a pure, almost emotionless killer and revenge seeker (for Vesper's death) in Craig's second outing - very Fleming-esque & better than many seem to credit it (esp. compared with the crowd pleaser that is "Skyfall"). Fast pace from that opening scene get-go, the action never lets up. Just outside my Top Ten. I added Connery's non-Eon offering for it as we all know, put itself out there in 1983 as a legitimate alternative to the Broccoli product, assuming that with Connery back in the lead role, it had genuine legitimacy. Yet the final film remains IMHO the lesser compared with all of EON's often variable output and proved that it was the collective creative efforts that made the Bond films what they have always been, not any single element.
@Stephan Martini Great ranking bro! I really like your top 5. IMO From Russia With Love is the best from Connery era. @@bouya642 thanks for the thumbs up and equally good sir, your ranking garners my respect. To be honest I find there's a certain fluidity with the rankings dependent upon mood and mindset and how I'm measuring. E.g. I find TSWLM a more entertaining blockbuster Moore period Bond film but appreciate FYEO as a more grounded, Fleming-esque return to form so on any given day, I could swap places with these two. Until recently, I too would have ranked FRWL above all other Connery films and I still think of his movies it best captures the feel of Fleming and the source material. However my criteria is perspective dependent. Am I looking for best interpretation of Fleming's character, consistency of plot & storyline, escapism start to finish, blockbuster adventure filmmaking? etc. etc. So why do I now put Dr. No & Thunderball above FRWL for this listing? Because overall, they offer me more of the Bond cinema experience as interpreted by the EON production team. By that I mean Dr. No has the Ken Adam sets and fantastical nature of story & plot that the cinema version is renowned for even though the character is better fleshed out with more nuance by Connery in FRWL and it is also a more grounded Cold War espionage story (despite the inclusion of Spectre absent from the novel). Thunderball has some pacing issues but overall it combines all of the best elements of the previous 3 movies, builds on the original blockbuster nature of Goldfinger and with Terence Young back in the Directors chair serves up a smorgasbord of everything that defines Bond at the movies. Exotic EVERYTHING, beautiful women (all four key female characters), swinging 60's bachelor lifestyle aspirations, high stakes plot, gadgets, tongue in-cheek humour & innuendo, jet-set lifestyle, escapism... Looking at both our lists I'd say most of the first 15 we have are interchangeable so there's a commonality on what we look for in a Bond film.
Nearly dropped my martini on the floor and shot myself with a Walther PPK when you mentioned Goldeneye so low. Shaken not stirred would be an understatement 🤯

Excellent list, Joe! Thanks for your enthusiasm, dedication, effort, and craftsmanship with your videos and podcasts. You helped us Bond-heads get through the pandemic. A happy and healthy 2023 to you and your’s, Head of Section.
I really respect your boldness when it came to this list. (Like Goldeneye at 15 is BOLD, but I don't entirely disagree honestly) As for my opinion, I think the three best ones are License to Kill, Casino Royale, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Great video! We loves the rankings. It's fascinating to hear why a certain film occupies a certain place in someone's list. Your emphasis on the look of the films, the cinematography and the design really resonates. That figures strongly in my preferences as well. Also, what you say about the films that are more grounded in reality and aren't creating scenarios just to wow and impress makes a lot of sense to me. In my (admittedly diseased) brain there are always three lists in constant battle with each other: the best, my favorite, and my most likely to watch. I'll bore you only with the highest in each list: FRWL, TSWLM, DAF (yeah, I know). Again, very enjoyable video!

I feel like you and I, as Bond fans, would agree on very, very little based on how the list had gone by minute 10 of the video 😂 We would not see eye to eye on… anything 🤣
Hey Joe, thanks for that ranking. Very entertaining. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Christmas time. I’m looking forward to the 2023 content coming. Stay safe and take care. 🤜🏼🤛🏻
Interesting fact: 15 "EON Productions" James Bond films in 25 years(1962-1987). And then, only 10 films in 36 years(1987-2023)... What a huge slowdown...
They should make a film based on the story of Ian Fleming’s Moonraker. They’d have to come up with a new title but the book is mostly untouched by filmmakers, and it’s a great story.
Your Top Ten's great! Your channel is one of my favorite channels about Bond! My Top Five is: 1. Casino Royale 2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service 3. For Your Eyes Only 4. From Russia With Love 5. The Living Daylights Great rankings! 👍
Great video, Head of Section! I would love to hear more podcasts with you and Scott. You could ranks the Bond Girls, locations etc. either way it is extremely comforting hearing you both passionately debate Bond.
Finally some love for octopussy (big surprise but I take it) and justice to timothy dalton for his performance in the living daylights and fyeo. 2 big shockers......... goldeneye (15 ? really ? ) and goldfinger omg. I think we can all agree on number 25 and 24 lol Also the spy who loved me should be higher up the list.
Would love to see your top 10 fav villain rankings, Joe! We have like 5 years til the next Bond movie so it's as good of a time as any to make some more list videos!

Interesting how similar yet different our respective rankings are, but I can respect that.. the beautiful thing about Bond, is that it’s been around for so long in so many different styles, that there really is a flavor for everyone, and I don’t believe there are any 2 fans that have identical rankings 👍🏻

the one that jumps out to me is The Man with the Golden Gun. i regard it as the artistic bottom of the series and also budget. At least with Moonraker you can see the budget on the screen and there are some genuinely good sequences. I've watched TMWTGG fewer than any other....besides Specte and NTTD

My boy Joe. Seeing NTTD in the top 10 is crazy but i love the balls here. Its middle of the road. I must thank you though as many years ago you opened my eyes on Octopussy. Cheers🍸🍸🍸
Excellent video, I could watch this all day. We have very similar taste, but even when I disagree you make very valid and reasonable points. Huge fan of FYEO and TLD as well, underrated I feel.
I think Licence To Kill is far too low on this list but I also think it doesn't deserve the veneration it gets. The film basically feels like high-end, Cannon Films knock off of a Bond film. Even the title sounds like a pedestrian James Bond wannabe. Yet on other hand, I will say the scenes in Isthmus City are actually well done and the tanker chase sequence is still the best chase scene in the franchise's history.
Well that was an awesome 55 minutes of watching, great list (love that #number 3) I really feel like it's like seeing an old friend when the upload hits the UA-cam! Bravo 👏
I've been a Bond fan since the age of 4. My first film was on video disc it was For your eyes only, fell in love with the franchise at that point. It a subjective list probably no two alike. Here's my list. I base mine on story, villain, soundtrack, action, Bond himself. 26. Never say never again** lazy rehash of Thunderball. 25. Die another Day** Incredibly outlandish not to be taken serious. 24. The world is not enough** interesting concept, but bullet in head villain and Denise Richards as a Dr! 23. Spectre ** sum up in a word DULL, everything about it. Swann Bond lack chemistry. 22. No time to die**1/2 Bond checking off woke boxes, still not buying romance between Swann and Bond, hate the Eilish song. 21. Thunderball**1/2 Average outting somewhat over rated. 20. Great classy video. I saw Roger in Crans-Montana, when i was 10, on a trip with the entire family, he was in the shopping street enjoying a walk with his wife...great memory. Tom, Brussels.
Disagree with about 99% of this ranking but we all have our own tastes so respect regardless.
Disagree with 100% !
Good to see the living daylights so high one of the most underrated bond films there is so much to enjoy in this one
It's my number one. To me it's the perfect Bond movie. It has all the classic Bond elements, a great Cold War plot, and a fantastic performance from Dalton. It's a damn shame he only did two movies.
@@AaronStark1993 couldn’t agree more
Agreed. Loved this one.
Diamonds Are Forever is straight garbage
An edited video of you two watching DAF would be great. Joe hates it, you could discuss how much more he would hate it if Connery wasn't in it.
Joe, I could watch your content for hours. Your highly personal and witty take on James Bond always makes me feel as if I'm debating with a good friend. The editing and music track is also top notch.
Such a great and very brave list. Thanks so much Joe! And just as an aside, so glad FYEO gets the recognition it very much deserves.
Agree about FYEO. It was always a top 10 for me and arguably top 5.
Classy Film and the locations were great too with nothing occuring that was that unrealistic or over the top
Thanks for the response.

You have ranked Octopussy 3rd in your 007 ranking. Good on you! Seriously underrated. This is a good fun Bond movie!

Spectre over Skyfall??
@@MrWafflelova
😂Ah the most controversial point on the list!
(M sort of does double duty as the female lead in Skyfall but making Judi Dench a terrible shot in her swansong leaves a bad taste in my mouth - they should have given her a killer aim like Helen Mirren in RED in my opinion.)
On top of that, it doesn’t help that it would take until “Backfire” and “Snow Plane” till I get to action cues that I enjoy from Thomas Newman because most of his material is too underpowered.

This is a very original top 25. I really like your perspectives and explanations. Very pleased to see For Your Eyes Only so high up. I think it’s often overlooked. It’s such a fantastic movie, with Roger Moore on perfect form.
Well done, sir! Considering the countless rankings videos I've watched from everybody and their brother...yours list is closest to my own (excepting your placements of Goldeneye, Licence to Kill, and No Time to Die...but we can't have everything :). Also I noticed you don't have any Brosnan films in the top 10 unlike more "modern" reviewers, I have the same feeling about these films. Brosnan is great but he was saddled with some of the worst written Bond films along with carrying over the bad parts of the Moore era.
Wow!! This video is as entertaining as the 007 movies. Thanks for sharing your list.
Thanks for sharing this, Joe. I always enjoy hearing your perspective. The intelligence and enthusiasm you bring to this ranking are enough to send me back to tweak my own list.
May you and your family enjoy a healthy and happy Christmas! All the best in the coming New Year. Let's hope we don't have to wait too many more for Bond 26!
Great presentation, Joe! Thanks for not taking the negative approach that most ''ranking'' videos take.

My approach, rather than rate each film with a score was to separate the films initially by Bond actor and rate the best of the actors output first, always adding weight to those most honouring the Fleming literary character legacy, combined with script robustness, entertainment value etc.
My favourites James Bond films are From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Thunderball, Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only.

This was so much fun, Joe! Thanks for doing it!
Goldfinger, from Russia, Spy who loved me and Skyfall are the top 4 Bond-movies. In my book.
Nearly dropped my martini on the floor and shot myself with a Walther PPK when you mentioned Goldeneye so low. Shaken not stirred would be an understatement 🤯
I love hearing everyone's ranking. We have some similarities but some big differences. I've struggled to compile my list. Especially in the middle of the pack. Here is my current ranking:
1. Casino Royale
2. From Russia with Love
3. License to Kill
4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
5. For Your Eyes Only

23. Moonraker
24. Die Another Day
25. Diamonds are Forever
It's interesting how wildly different people's James Bond lists are.
The list was well thought out, and although there were differences to my personal list, I could understand your perspective…..and then you put Goldeneye at 15. Man Joe…you tested my faith in you lol. Great video as always, fantastic list, and always enjoy debating this with you and the community.
Like sex and pizza…when bad, it’s still pretty good. Can’t help but love the Bond franchise. Have a Merry Christmas! 🍸
@AirSoft123 IMO the best James Bond films are From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Goldfinger, Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, License To Kill, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall and No Time To Die. My favourites are From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Thunderball, Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me
Absolutely a great ranking video mr head of section!💪
I applaud you for being foolish enough to embark on such a risky task. My list doesn't match yours. How could you be so wrong? LOL Thanks for all the hard work putting this together!

4. No Time To Die
3. Casino Royale
2. Goldeneye
1. Skyfall
It's nice to see someone that *doesn't* heavily overrate The Spy who Loved Me, and thank you for placing Casino Royale exactly where it belongs!
What a wonderful video, Joseph! Sure my list would look different (no need to get started on QoS 😂 which easily makes my Top 10) you very well explained why a film ranks where within your list which is entertaining and interesting at the same time. Bravo 🎉! And your unbeatable excitement for films like OMSS or CR is inspiring to re-watch them again (both of course in my personal Top 5 as well).
Thanks and have a wonderful holiday season
Your appreciation for NTTD makes up for the GoldenEye ranking haha. Good ranking sir!
Yes, Octopussy is a great one, even though I would have put Spy who loved me and Goldfinger over it.
I feel like you and I, as Bond fans, would agree on very, very little based on how the list had gone by minute 10 of the video 😂 We would not see eye to eye on… anything 🤣
Joe, I know you talked plenty about No Time to Die, but can you do one more with Scott, I would love to hear his thoughts.
Yes! Joe and Scott never reconvened for a NTTD review. Thanks for pointing that out.
Love your content HoS, glad to see the long form. Hope you’re doing well!
Hey Joe, thanks for that ranking. Very entertaining. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Christmas time. I’m looking forward to the 2023 content coming. Stay safe and take care. 🤜🏼🤛🏻
You should have talked more about the ending of no time to die, it was out of this world
Interesting fact: 15 "EON Productions" James Bond films in 25 years(1962-1987). And then, only 10 films in 36 years(1987-2023)... What a huge slowdown...
You’ll appreciate this! At about 6:15, ua-cam.com/video/TnkDDn02Krg/v-deo.htmlsi=SPxlqH4UC9w7xE__
They should make a film based on the story of Ian Fleming’s Moonraker. They’d have to come up with a new title but the book is mostly untouched by filmmakers, and it’s a great story.
Your Top Ten's great! Your channel is one of my favorite channels about Bond!
My Top Five is:
1. Casino Royale
2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
3. For Your Eyes Only
4. From Russia With Love
5. The Living Daylights
Great rankings! 👍
Agree on Brosnans better films. Mid-tier and not top 5 material
Goldeneye, Goldfinger and The spy who loved me out of the top 10? C'mon man.
I think we can all agree on number 25 and 24 lol
Also the spy who loved me should be higher up the list.
Would love to see your top 10 fav villain rankings, Joe! We have like 5 years til the next Bond movie so it's as good of a time as any to make some more list videos!
This is my top five:
1.- Casino Royale
2.- Goldfinger
3.- On Her Majesty Secret Service
4.- GoldenEye
5.- Skyfall
My Top 10 James Bond Films :

3. Thunderball (1965)
2. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
1. From Russia with Love (1963)

My husband loves Man With The Golden Gun but I agree…it’s my very least favorite Bond film
Anyway here's my list
1. Casino Royale
2. The Living Daylights
3. From Russia with Love
4. The World Is Not Enough

@qwertymanor On Her Majesty Secret Service is so low bro. It's one of the best

This is a great video! Some really interesting points there in defence of the ranking. Some I disagree with but this was really good
love your perspective. Have a different list in some. Still.... you explained them very well. Love your channel
Beautiful list, well put together. Love it that OHMSS is so high!
Love the editing
Solid top 3. I would have put Spy Who Loved Me and Goldfinger way higher but I did like watching you go through your top 25.
Well done. I disagree on several - very much - but you explain your choices admirably.
I do agree Casino Royale is the best.
I like that you justify each one relative to its neighbor. My top 7 is almost identical to yours, but otherwise there's a lot of difference.
Good to see Octopussy get some love. One of my top 10 as well.
One of the classic whacky fun entries
