Hi Chad, I’m a retired HVAC contractor and watched this product video. Like you I had already installed the RV Airflow product and was amazed at the difference in air flow and a solution to not blocking more than 50% of the Coleman factory air filters. After watching this video I purchased two covers. While this Silencer product provides some noise reduction it has other shortcomings I am not impressed with. They provide only one foam filter instead of the two from the factory. While it’s not up against the intake louvers, I would argue it has less filter surface area that will require more servicing/cleaning. Such an important task for these units that is made much more difficult by having to unscrew this cover to inspect or clean the air filter. Don’t loose the screws. I look at this product and they could have built in a no tools solution for this task, but they didn’t. I also have a rather large gap between the cover and the ceiling with the cover at the end of the adjustment screw slot, so no more adjustment to put the cover closer.
I wouldn’t recommend using this product unless one has already installed RV Airflow because of its restricted air flow that your testing acknowledged.
Is it worth it to have a quieter system? Barely.
I would replace it in a heartbeat if there was a product that overcame its shortcomings.
You’ve had yours for a while. How is servicing the air filter?
    My product grades:
    RV Airflow - A+
    The RV A/C Silencer - C-

Between the A/C unit and the occasional Generator noise we thought the only solution was to purchase a soundbar to hear the TV. This will at least solve one of our problems. Great video.

Last August, we downsized to a 2015 Winnebago Via (25" motorhome on a Sprinter chassis) with a Coleman Mach AC. I installed the Silencer before we even left the RV dealer's lot and I was impressed with the results. We haven't been out too much this year (health issues) but we just returned from a 3 day trip and the weather was hot and humid. In addition to the reduced noise, I'm impressed with how cold the output air is compared to the output of ac units we had on the two travel trailers we've owned over the years. I do think that for the best results, it's important to really seal up all the gaps and leaks with the aluminum taper as part of the installation process. I also think the silencer reduces the frequency range of the AC noise as to my ears, there is a reduction in the higher frequencies. The Silencer is a little pricey, but well worth the investment . If my rig had multiple AC units, I'd install one on each AC unit!

I’ve had the Silencer for almost two years now. I didn’t do a DB test, but the lady and I aren’t having to repeat ourselves in conversation lol. It really works that well!! So much so, a fellow RVing friend was amazed at ours and bought one for their big 5th wheel. It’s awesome!

FYI Chad - I am a retired Submarine Sonarman and what is taught to us is that a 3dB increase is roughly twice as loud. I actually taught Submarine noise reduction in New London, CT for 3 years during a shore tour in the early '90s. (Log is correct, not a linear scale - Ambient noise (AIR/Steel) is 10Log where - Submerged (Water) is 20Log.)

A 100 to one power ratio is 20 dB, etc. Doubling/halving) the actual power is 3 dB (-3 dB). However, our hearing is more logarithmic and people will say that the sound “doubles” in loudness with 8-10 dB increase. Good job. Thank you for making this video, I've wondered about using one or the other, or both. One thing I'd have liked to have seen is if the RV Airflow on its own did anything to lower noise on its own from stock. Over the weekend I installed only the Silencer, and we noticed a dramatic airflow increase over our stock intake - Coleman Mach (not shallow) in a Rockwood Ultra Light. I did not use any measurements like you did, but we tested by hand before and after the install. Also, once I finished the install and turned on the A/C unit, a lot of debris that was in the ducts from the factory came blowing out, so this was a pretty clear indicator the airflow was increased. I did take a significant amount of time ensuring everything was sealed just as Wacko does in their install video, so this almost certainly had some effect on the airflow once completed. Now we can watch TV while the A/C is on, something that was very difficult to do before.

I installed the RV Airflow a 8 months ago. I installed in a 2007 Monaco Knight Class A. Just a note, they didn't have one for my rig but one close. When I ordered, they got a hold of me, and questioned my measurements, because they didn't line up with the one I ordered. I told them what I have, and they said good to know. We have to do a modification to the product, before we send it so it will fit correctly. I got it and it worked great. So note to others, if they don't have one exactly for your rig AND AC, get a hold of them first, they probably can modify one for you.

It would be cool to see the dB change of just the RvAirflow over the stock system and compare that to the silencer. Does it quiet just as much? Also maybe a future video idea is a comparison of the RvAirflow vs the DIY airflow hack. The DIYers claim its just as good but only $15 in materials. Imo the RvAirflow looks designed better. RVAirflow claims 3dB improvement. We didn't notice a big improvement in sound in our last RV wtih just RVAirFlow... The other thing about the DIY versions is regular styrofoam can hold and allow mold and bacteria to grow. RVAF uses a special kind of high density foam: "The RV Airflow System is manufactured from 3lb Expanded Polystrene (EPS), the highest density available. It is highly durable, temperature and water resistant and prevents bacteria and mold growth. It contains no CFC, HCFC or HFC blowing agents or formaldehyde, is chemically inert so it does not produce methane gas or any contaminating leachates and is 100% recyclable! "

I wonder if this emulates a blocked duct or can this reduction of air flow have long term effects on these small coleman machs. I think the silence would be golden but good air flow in warm climates like the results of the rv air flow works with the system not against it like the silencer in my opinion. You said it redirects the airflow and your silencer data showed that it is truly "choking" the system slightly. Maybe it is a small enough change there will be no additional strain put on the system to cause a shorter life span or other problems.

Can you do a video on getting maintenance done the most economically - for both Low Income (RV life to have low cost of living) and Disabled (so you can not physically do it yourself)?

Great video Chad. Kinda off the subject but just heard on the radio that catalytic converter theft is up 1200%. Would love to see a video on ways to prevent this theft on RVs and tow vehicles.

Tow vehicles don't have engines; therefore they wouldn't have a catalytic converter.

We bought RV Airflow after your last video on it for our 2020 380FL. Last fall we bought the RV AC Silencer for our main AC, and like you we found the decibel drop was measurable. We did not buy one for our bedroom AC, that one doesn't have the noise that bothers us as much as the one over our head for the TV. Great job gathering the data!! PS: Is it me, or is Chads audio a little choppy in this video?

Curious what the pressure difference would be with rv airflow and not the silencer. Does the silencer restrict airflow significantly with RV airflow installed?

I wonder how much of a noise reduction you would get by installing the thermotec Super Sonic Acoustical Mat to the inside of the white cover of the silencer?

The manufactures should install these because the noise from the ac is ridiculous! As pricey rv's are, it needs to be standard. I have to blast the tv volume just to hear the sound.

So if the silencer decreases flow, does it add strain to the motor/system?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  Рік тому

I think technically that must be true. But I'm sure the fam motors are designed with a large range as the inflow/outflow parameters can change dramatically just by opening the dump vents, closing AC vents, etc.

Chad and Tara, what do you think and how are you going to deal with the new “law” that requires UA-camrs and others to obtain a permit to film in national parks? I have heard the permit and other fees could reach 500 per park. You are not guaranteed a permit and the permit fee is non refundable. I personally think it’s a money grab by the government.

That could be said about every RV upgrade out there.. but, where' would one draw the line? Sure, every upgrade and improvement could be stock.. but, it would be reflected in the price and not everyone needs every upgrade.
